Amazing, simply amazing. Dropped $100 on a GE Service call and wasn't gonna pay $900 for a new door. Ordered the "syringe and tubing" kit and it worked. We got water pouring out!
Thanks DoItYourselfDad! Worked like a charm
Awsome! Thank you!
Thanks for showing the best way to clear a frozen water line. We have had that problem many times. I believe it is very common in GE side by sides due to where the route the water line. They probably do not insulate the water line enough from the freezer either. I think the reason we have a chronic problem is that we do not use the water every day which allows small chunks of ice to form until the line is completely blocked. I had unsuccessfully and cautiously used the hair dryer method until I fastened something similar to what you are using. You are definitely giving your subscribers the best advice!
This worked like a charm! We rent, and the maintenance staff only had temporary fixes for us. With this, I can fix it on my time. Took a few applications, but I had a pretty heavy buildup of ice
This really saved me a lot of headaches by giving me a quick direction to pursue, thank you! I did just this and restored water..
Awesome! Glad you got it working again!
Worked great for me. Over the years I've mainly used a hair dryer which caused some melting of the black lever arm which gave me another project. Anyhow, thanks again for posting this video. Oh and I made my own kit from items at Walmart.
Method worked beautifully.
All I can say is a BIG THANK YOU, worked wonderful for us probably under 15 minutes, and water was flowing - Thanks again, be well and stay safe......... Greetings from Chicago, IL
Awsome!!!!!!!!
Thank you for this quick fix as we were constantly opening the freezer door for a while to defrost the water line.
For six years, we had a plastic string in our GE refrigerator water dispenser. However, when we had to replace the freezer thermostat two days ago because of a defrost problem, the water started dispensing like new again. It has been two days since the replacement, and the water is still flowing well. I wanted to share this experience so that others can also consider this option for their refrigerator.
Oh wow! By far the easiest fix on youtube!! Thank you!!
Thanks for the idea! Made my own tool in 5 minutes and had it cleared in less time than that.
Awsome! DIY!!!
Worked perfectly! Thanks for the tip!
Wow! It really works! This probably saved us $125-130. Sweet, sweet relief for sure.
Amazing! Worked for me and was super easy. FYI: Took me probably 10 refills of the syringe to clear the blockage, and the water needed to be pretty close to boiling. Thanks for sharing this cheap/easy fix!
Glad it worked!
Worked perfectly!!! Thank you!!!
This works like gold!!!!
Thanks for this vid. I had an appliance repair tech tell me to let the freezer thaw which probably would have resulted in food loss. Got it done in less than 5 minutes and no food loss with the syringe method.
Awsome!!!
Thank you soooo much DIY Dad! I had watched numerous other videos and checked everything and even used the hair dryer without success. I used a 10 ml syringe which fitted perfectly. It took about 6 times but it is flowing again
Awsome!!!!!! Glad we could help!
Did the problem come back?
@@justme9723 No it hasn't. It just took about 6 squirts of hot water before the water line started flowing again, but thank you for asking .
Hi DoItYourselfDad. Thx for the video. I tried injecting with the recommended tool but gave up after about 5 or 6 injections. Could there be a bigger problem or should I continue injecting? Thx!
It would be something different, or the blockage may be really big. You're not going to hurt anything by injecting more.
Thank you! Wonderful!!! Ordering one right away! My problem is the reverse: water but no ice. My refrigerator is so jammed into a corner, it would be a major problem to pull it out to get to the line behind it even with a hairdryer. I've been using the hairdryer on the exposed part of the line going into the icemaker, but that is not enough. It froze up after a storm knocked our power out for 5 hours. When the power came back on, the line to the icemaker froze up. I did not know these things existed!!
Thank you! Thank you so much!!
I made my own with a food injector that came with some Cajun seasoning I bought. Used a tube from the sprayer on a bottle I had. I also used a hair dryer on the back of the door where I suspected the tubing was. Worked perfectly! 😍😍
Using the tube from a spray bottle is a fantastic idea! I had the syringe, just couldn't find the right-size tube. I even went to Home Depot and their smallest tube was still too thick. Thank you for your comment.
Thanks for this tutorial - worked for me perfectly !
Thanks bro. Best way period...
Mine freezes when we get Arctic temps for more than 3 days (my fridge is up against an outside wall), this works as described, was quick and easy!
the problem is that the water dispenser line freezes. GE side by side model (GSH25JSTCSS) Appliance parts pros said try the heater first, It did not work wire #2 & #6 did not have continous 12 volts DC.Then I could replace the freezer door! price around $700.00. & $60 something dollars for the heater. the heater.
On Amazon I picked up the heater & a 12 volt 5 amp power supply all for around $ 20.00 see attached photos. I attached the power supply to th upper left side of the refrigerator w/ 2 sided magic tape so I can see the little blue led photo #5 added a little silver tape to protect the the 2 small white wires. It's been a couple of months now and NO more freeze ups. It used to freeze up weekly.
Thanks for the recommendation and showing us how to do this. I have to tell you that before this, I was doing the hair dryer hack as it worked the other few times. :) I used my marinate syringe injector (without the needle), microwaved a cup of water for 30 seconds, injected it for a couple times, the actual water pressure already build in the line pushed the little ice plug. :) uuff and now we have water.
Thank you so much! This did the trick! Last time I called the handyman to fix this problem I paid $285. So this fix was well worth the time to watch your video and buy the tool.
Yeup! it worked like a charm. Thank you!
"Refrigerator enema" 🤣😂 btw I loved the intro of the setup and also when the water started flowing at the end. I got the symbolism btw, in case anyone missed it. Very witty, Sir. Very clever indeed. You have a subscriber. Also yeah, this procedure is the most effective. I have tried using a heat gun and it does melt plastic very quickly and it is not as effective when you are trying to get at the inside tubing that's frozen.
Wow, that's awesome. Will it work on the ice maker too?
It should
I just tried it and it works!!!!
Thank you for this video! I would like to know if there is a simple fix without calling a Plummer for low water pressure? We have well water and after a storm in July our water pressure has not been as strong as before. We change the filter under the house which was full of sand. Could we have sand in our pipes that can be flushed out?
Sorry, I’m not too familiar with well systems.
It's usually frozen down in the door, not near the water outlet. A heater near the water outlet won't do anything. Packing the freezer too much (so the cold food is right next to the door) is what causes the issue... along with a bad design by GE. I've had two of the same GE models made about 4 years apart and they both freeze up.

Thanks!!! McGuyver'd one with a dental irregation syringe and some 1/8 in. vacuum tubing. Works like a champ. 10x faster than thawing with a hairdryer.
Good stuff!
Thank you for your video! Its worked great.
There is a heater kit for that model WR49x10173
Thanks for tips, this was really helpful! Is this a one time fix? Or will I have to do this method every few months?
Depending on the fridge you may have to do it again every now and then. It's a design flaw with some refrigerators.
Try turning your freezer setting down also.
Also use the water dispenser everyday even if you don’t want to drink water
As a handyman I recommend you leave the night light on, turn your freezer up, ie warmer, and use the dispenser on a regular basis to help avoid having to do this, and yes this trick in this video is the way to go, if it's frozen in the door and not in the coil inside the fridge or in the internal filter, you can check by pulling the grate off the bottom of the fridge, disconnecting the water line going into the door, close the door and try the dispenser, if the water comes out of the line than it's frozen inside the door for sure ;)
Great video. Do u have any videos on how to get ice makers to work again in the freezer? Thanks Gos bless
I don’t have a video on it, but we’ve had that problem on a fridge at work. It turned out that the filter had frozen solid. We removed the filter to let it thaw and reinstalled it and it worked.
Appreciate that info thanks so much !
I bought one of these and it worked wonderfully!! The first time I called a repairman and he took my freezer door off and took it outside on my patio and let it sit in the sun and also used a hairdryer on it!! Finally it thawed and I was charged $150.00!!!
Can you use this clear the water line for the ice maker.?
Thanks worked great
Bought the tool and it worked like an charm! Thank-you!
Awesome! Glad you got it working!
@@DoItYourselfDad 9-2-21 Have a whirlpool Frig with only ice maker. I’m going to try this trick on the ice maker water delivery tube
behind the ice maker in the freezer. Hope it lets he ice maker start dispensing ice cubes again. I’ll let you know if it helps.
merci beaucoup !!
How do you fix the issue.
How to work this item for this water dispenser
What temp should the freezer be set at so this water line does not freeze?
0 F , but with some of these there are issues even at that temp. You can try bumping it up a few degrees if needed.
Thanks, this did the trick.
Awesome!
Do you think this is the same type of problem if it won’t give me water in the morning but in the evening when I get home from work I have water? I haven’t lived a winter yet in this house. It was really cold last week too and no issues but today and yesterday I couldn’t get water to come out. No other sinks are frozen.
It could be that the fridge is just barely getting cold enough at night to freeze the wine, and worms have just enough to fight during the day. If the temperature of the freezer could be raised a little bit that might help.
I did this with tubing like in the video, it only went up a little ways and ran into an obstruction (frozen water) so then I squirted hot water up the line and it moved in a little more until I ran into more frozen water. I repeeted this and the line kept going further in a few tries and then it cleared out completely. Furthermore, I wonder if the reason you get water in the evening is that your kitchen warms up during the day, or possibly the sun shines on the outside of the fridge door and thaws it.
Mine has stopped makin fresh ice to and will only dispense the ice that was already in the ice maker. Hoping this helps
Genius idea! Used a medicine syringe and aquarium air tubing! Worked like a charm!
DIY for the win!
Will it keep freezing up?
It may, check your freezer temp and make sure it’s not too low.
This works perfectly!
I've had the same refrigerator for 17 years. And for all of those 17 years, it was without issue until today. After watching several videos, I swapped my water filter and still nothing. I am now defrosting the water reservoir behind the crisper (can't tell if it is frozen or not). I also checked the lines behind the refrigerator and they do not seem to be frozen. However, I did read elsewhere that a homeowner found having too many ice packs in the door was the culprit. Oddly enough, I had 11 medium sized ice packs on the door for months without issue. But, I added one more a few days ago and then this issue. So, time will tell if ice packs on the door and near the dispender caused my freezing line issue.
I wanted to say that if you disconnect the line at the bottom of the door, it is easy to tell when it clears as water starts flowing down there.
I just used my water pik loaded with very warm water. It cleared in 15 seconds!
What was the cause of the freezing water outlet? Is there any preventative maintenance to avoid this? Thanks
The water line routes through the door of the freezer. I’ve seen people that have disassembled the freezer door and added some insulation between the line and the freezer which would probably help.
Thank you! These videos are extremely helpful
Worked for me!
This product is a real godsend. Before I was using a meat basting syringe and a random piece of tubing. It worked but was always falling apart and spraying water everywhere but where you needed it. Good find.
Yes this was great! We just did this , just used a syringe we had from baby medicine and tried to use my breast pump tubing but wasn’t quite small enough haha. But we just squirted water up the line a bunch, hot water. And finally worked !!! Thank you 🙏🏼
Awsome! Glad that DIY worked!
how thick is the hose?
Can we get it at home depot?
I haven’t seen them there, but it’s worth checking.
We have LG LRMDC2306S. During first month we’ve had 4 service visits for craft ice maker not working. Each service call reveals the water feed line to the ice maker is frozen solid although the freezer temp is set at +4F. We added two thermometers into the freezer that log temp and they both show 4F so temp sensor is good. Does the craft ice maker line have a heater/defrost? Latest tech wants to switch out water feed line but by this point we have zero confidence LG know how to build a fridge.
It’s a design problem for sure. I don’t believe any of these have a defroster on the water line.
I don’t see the link for this tool
Here it is: amzn.to/37YOU5l
@@DoItYourselfDad thank you
What about when your GE fridge (different model) line is in the back? Back part of the fridge, I mean?
The line is entering the fridge from the back, but it still routed through the fridge to the door, correct? Do you know where the blockage is?
@@DoItYourselfDad so the last time the maintenance man fixed it, he showed me a long thin piece of ice that was stopping the water flow into the mold itself. I’m an idiot when it comes to this stuff but I’d like the ice maker to work. It’s an old fridge, apartment type fridge. The top freezer and lower fridge open from the same side. I hope that answered your question. ✌🏼
@@DoItYourselfDad this model doesn’t dispense the water or ice from the door.
If it’s the feed coming out of the icemaker, it’s going to be a different line. It sounds like you may need to thaw the line on your icemaker for a little bit to get it to work.
@@DoItYourselfDad I think I might do that, like take everything out, turn it off probably, use a hairdryer on it, be careful even though I wouldn’t come in contact with any water. So in the line is gonna be some nasty old water, would that be correct to assume? Uhhh
Nasty water, reminds me of 2020 and a bad property manger omg anyway, I might try to thaw it out. The last time the maintenance guy fixed, literally a few minutes after he left it started freezing up again. I had like one mold of ice cubes and that was it.
Anything else this could possibly be? I have emptied about 2 full mugs of warm water into it. Could it just need more or is there another possibility here? Thanks.
it could also be a valve or supply line issue.... but if the entire line is frozen it will take a lot of water to get it free.
I just ordered one. I had no idea what was wrong with my water dispenser. I called a tech out, he replaced the valve bank, then told me I needed a new filter. I got a new filter and still nothing. I called the outfit that sent the tech, and spoke to the lead tech. He helped me diagnose over the phone, frozen water line it is.
How many cups of boiling water do you have to use? My i e maker is not getting water to it either it is not making ice. I trieddefroating it for a day and a half . It did have a little water come out after I turned the refrigerator back on. Do you have any other suggestions?
You shouldn’t eat a lot, two or three syringes for should be plenty.
I’ve been doing this for months, but the water line keeps freezing. Is there any way more permanent to fix the frozen water line?
Throw a thermometer in your freezer and see if it’s getting colder than it’s supposed to be. That’s what was going on with my refrigerator.
@@DoItYourselfDad thank you, I'll try that! If that's the case, do I just change the temperature settings and it would work? Thanks for the quick reply!
Would this also help descaling a water line with vinegar?
Yes, absolutely
@@DoItYourselfDad - thanks! Appreciate the response!
Appreciate it!
HI - I tried this several times and it didnt work. Any other ideas? Thanks!
Thank you. Subscribed.
Within the warranty period, GE sent me a water line heater that spliced into the light wires. Not even a year later... either the heater died or I don’t know. It’s back to freezing. I’m not comfortable leaving it at 6°, that’s another suggestion they had was to adjust the freezer temp. How about stop being so gd cheap and sell a durable, quality product!! 😡
Thx for the vid I’ll give this one a go
I think the only way that would work you have to leave the dispenser light ON all the time.
Wow thank you so much!
how do you prevent the line from getting frozen? What causes the line to freeze> ?
okay this is a great idea. but my issue is when I try to put water in the line it doesn't accept the water and I get water shooting out at me. any ideas?
If it’s doing that, it’s getting blocked by ice. Put a towel down and keep applying the warm water until all the ice melts
I actually used an extra new syringe from my kids cough syrup. It fits air tight in the hose but I can't even get one full 5ml of hot water in there. The pressure forces some back into syringe. When I press dispenser only the water I put in comes back out. I tried this a few times to no avail.
We have had the side by side for 14 years with no issue. The filter is due to be changed next month.
Do you have anything you can try to get up inside the the tube to figure out how far back the blockage is?
Me too
I use weed eater line, fits right in the tube
Ooops. Too late. I fixed my frozen water line with a hair dryer. Hope I didn't damage anything. I will follow your recommendation next time.
A lot of people accidentally melt things with the hair dryer.
I wonder is there is a way to change the water dispenser tip, I tried the blow dryer and melt the tip.
Did you ever find a resolution? I did the same. I damaged the water dispenser tip and the ice door. Yikes!
@@christophernarcisco6550 the ice door can be replace, for the tip I use a nose plier to open the tip as much as I could then I just put a larger diameter water hose over the old tip, is funky but it worked and it has work for over two years.
@@zakarathedragonqueen7254 Thank you! I am ordering the replacement ice door flapper and spring online. Thanks again for your reply.
It's good video but it's temp fix, the source of the problem is either something about your damper valve or airflow issue between your freezer and fridge ;)
It’s a common problem with the particular model in the video, a definite design flaw.
Thanks for the Video, $13.95 is not "a couple of bucks" thought; Again, thanks for the video. Why does the tube keep freezing? I have my freezer set on the lowest setting, which is 1 where 5 is normal.
Its a couple of bucks compared to the $150 and up service call to squirt warm water up a tube.... The design on some of these models is terrible, there isn't enough insulation inside the door to prevent the line from freezing.
Happened to me again, can't unfreeze this time. Any suggestions?
What's the temp in your freezer?
@@DoItYourselfDad I was finally able to thaw it. Temp was set to 0, but an analog thermometer actually read -5. Not sure how accurate that is though. I raised the temp to 5 degrees. Analog thermometer didn’t change much.
Plastic syringe 💉 and couple straws worked perfectly. Thanks$$$$
I ordered the kit from Ebay. Didn't work on my Whirlpool, the hose is too big to fit into the water outlet. :(
Tried this to no avail. Had to unpack the freezer into coolers and thaw it out, heating the backside of the dispenser area with a hair dryer. Second time now in three or four years. After the first time I taped some eps foam to this area for extra insulation. Thought it helped, but maybe not. I do think we had too much frozen mass in the door or close to it, which per other comments can cause this problem. Good luck all
the problem is that the water dispenser line freezes. GE side by side model (GSH25JSTCSS) Appliance parts pros said try the heater first, It did not work wire #2 & #6 did not have continous 12 volts DC.Then I could replace the freezer door! price around $700.00. & $60 something dollars for the heater. the heater.

WOW! Excellent! : )
got water but ice tray in door unit is not filing up. ?
That was exactly what was going on with the fridge in the video.
hi, at 2:05 in your video after you are done dispensing water, i hear a bang noise...is that normal, like maybe the interior water lines hitting something. My ge profile is doing this and wanted to be confirm it not an issue...only does it after getting water or after the ice maker gets water.
Yes it’s normal. It’s normal, it’s the clunk if the water valve shutting. You’ll hear it louder if it’s feeding the ice machine as well.
What about a frozen ice maker water line? Mine’s has two separate lines for water and ice maker.
Thanks for the tip. I have a 10ml 💉. I will get the drain line at Home Depot and try.☺️
The first couple of times I had to do this I did just that. Works great!
Any luck with finding a small hose from home depot?
My problem my ice maker water inlet is frozen & I'm not getting water out of the dispenser either
it is our Ice line that is frozen. We get water out the door. But 2x we have called out repairman and that line keeps freezing...any ideas there>
figured it out? i have the same problem.
The water line can be defrosted by leaving the night light on the door overnight every night to prevent future water lines freeze up. Just remember to turn off the night light in the morning to save energy.
Great idea!
Also, raise the factory freezer temperature from 5 to 4 until we find the right freezer temperature to keep lines from refreezing and the night light can be shut off when not needed to defrost. Other RUclipsrs made this suggestion. :-))

What about the line that fills the ice tray? That's what is frozen for me.
This probably wont work, if the line is exposed inside the fridge try wrapping your hand around the frozen section or a heating pad to melt the blockage.
Yes on mines the line that fills the tray is frozen 6 months old Whirlpool French doors
I tried the hair dryer it kept cutting off.Sooooo it's still frozen
It works of course. But my line keeps icing. I even set the freezer to 1.
Did you get it resolved? You may have to use the water dispenser everyday to prevent water droplets freezing up.
It works, but only for a short time then refreezes. Any ideas?
Your freezer may be set too cold, or you may be missing some insulation inside the door.
Ordered my ice surrender the other day and received Saturday, 4/18. Followed the instructions and within after about 4 tries of putting water into the line, out came the water. I'm glad I got this. It really works.
Glad it worked!!!
I'll tell you an easier way than that. Take an electric heating pad, place it in a plastic trash bag and tie it up so water can't get in easily. Then place it where you place a water glass then turn on high. Come back in 20-30 mins and check. If still no water leave longer. No mess.
Solid idea!
I made my own enema kit, and it worked perfectly in a couple of minutes. What I liked about this method is that I could only push my tubing in a few inches, then hit the frozen water. After the first syringe squirt it moved up a little but after each squirt I could FEEL the frozen water thaw and moved it further in. It only took about 4 syringes full of water until I could push the tubing on up, and KNOW that the obstruction was clear. Done deal, pick up the towels wipe down the door, and now I have water flowing perfectly. Someone in my family had turned the freezer temp to max cold. So I turned it back down, and we're all good again. If I continue having problems I'll try your idea to thaw the whole door and not just the tubing.
My ice and water won't dispense. My ice maker is okay. My problem might be the switch? Also there was a piece of black plastic that came out.
Is it not feeding water into the ice maker? Sounds like the valve may be shot.
I di somethings but is frozen again
