    3:00 that sound has something to do with the V.S.V (Variable Stator Vanes). Because the engines are on its best above 80% of thrust. So those Vanes turns below the 80% thrust to make sure all incoming air will have the max performance as higher compression, less speed etc.
    My teacher could explane it better so sorry guys if you dont understand it ;)

      Just goes to show how advanced those engines are!

      @@SOUTHENDAVIATION indeed, but its manageable. For gasturbine engines (M15) is my last grade an 8. So i think for someone who didn't has the highest education at highschool tis wouldn't be that difficult.

      @@jouniairplanevideos Further on to this discussion, as this howl has always fascinated me, Variable Stator Vanes were new to me when you mentioned them so I assumed that these were unique to the GTF. I did some further research on VSV's to find out a good few engines have them, CFM56 for example which has no Vulcan howl like the GTF does. One conclusion I did have was maybe it's the gear ratio which helps the howling noises? The fan rotates at a third of the speed as the HP and LP compressors. So I wondered is the howl created by the sudden acceleration of air once it enters the compressor stages?

      @@SOUTHENDAVIATION good question, this is something I don't know exactly. I need to ask it my teacher myself.

    • @ivtec74
      @ivtec74 3 года назад +1

      I don’t think it’s due to the Variable Vanes. All digital engines has Variable Vanes.
      I worked on PW engines before and this howling sound is quite normal when the engine spools up to part power - 80%. It’s something got to do with newer engines, when the turbine blades are cutting into the outer seals.
      I might be wrong but this answer is best to be answered by OEM themselves.

    The E190 and the A220 with the PW GTF has the whale mating calls and I love it. The A320Neo with the similar engine doesn’t really make this noise.

    • @SOUTHENDAVIATION
      @SOUTHENDAVIATION  3 года назад +4

      Indeedy, the NEO with PW1000s sometimes does it but it's sort of hit n miss. I think it's to do with the Engine being larger means it's less common on the NEO?

      GE90 drinks fuel man….. compared to PW4000, PW is worse.
      But GTF is a whole different game play…lesser parts, lesser stages, lighter and most important, lower maintenance cost.
