    I’m really excited about the Campagnolo groupset mainly because I’ve always been a fan but it’s good to see somebody else other than just Shimano and SRAM

    Currently have the Campy tool kit in its OG wood case at the shop I work in. I open it to marvel at the tools more often than I actually use them, but that’s only because I don’t want to lose my job if I break one of the tools. XD It’s. Beautiful. The shop owner is also getting the new Basso Palta that’s spec’d with Ekar as soon as they ship over to the US. Stoked to build it up!

    As a recent convert to a 1x drive train I have to say that those Campagnolo Ekar cassettes hit the exact sweet spot of what I have been missing with my setup.
    Riding Eagle GX in the back I have found myself wishing for some extra cogs in the 10 to 18 range specifically and I love, love, love what they have done with Ekar there.
    The Ekar 10-44 cassette is exactly what I am looking for and it's putting the extra cogs exactly where they're most useful. Too bad that we have got yet another freehub body standard to deal with.
    If I am not moving to that groupset it's going to be because I am not going to put any money into a new wheelset.

    Why are you guys hating on Campy? What I like the most about you guys is that you're not pretentious and encourage people to focus on what they like. I have been influenced by each of you. I bought and restored a vintage touring bike because of Russ's videos. I ride it all the time. I wound up getting into road cycling and I just bought a used Wiler with a Campy groupset. It's all carbon. I was really excited to get it. I was really excited when I saw the title of the video, but you kind of sucked the joy out of having my own campy groupset.

      I don't think we hated on Campy, so much as gently prodded them. Everything we said was true. They're slow to innovate. Gearing range isn't that wide. Notoriously proprietary. New crankset BCD is going to be a PITA. And they charge a premium. We also said we love them as a brand and would be sad if they went out of business.

      @@alternativecyclingnetwork5221 9-42 is not good enough? I ride 11-42 with an 40 upfront and honestly the 42 is too low of a gear for me and I am in the process of becoming a middle age short fat man. But sure, the premium prices and their proprietary solutions are a pain in the rear end that is for sure. For me as an old mtb xc rider turned to a softie shimano is the choice and preferably the cheap last gen groupset at that for best price/perf ratio. Wish their cassettes were starting at 9 and was more closely geared the first 6-7 gears at least.

    Born in Shrewsbury here! I recently swapped my 3x11 Campag Athena to a 1x (42) with a 11-40 cassette. Seems I was bang on trend. I really like how the rear shifts but was not enjoying the super high tension on the front mech. Problem solved.

    The thing with the cassettes in EKAR is that they have 1T gaps over five-ish cogs, so the 91011 changes over 40T ring feel like 11-12-13 over 53. I also think that they didn't do the 9-44 cassette because of problems with RD capacity.

    • @caesar2164
      @caesar2164 4 года назад +1

      My guess is they did 10-44 to keep the % change in tooth count as similar as possible (that's how you make sure gear changes are as smooth as possible)

    Tiagra 4700 cable pull is the same as the new generation Shimano stuff but only 10 speeds. So you can use a 105 or Ultegra or DA or GRX RD with the Tiagra shifters. You CANNOT use a 105 10 speed RD with Tiagra 4700...the indexing will not work properly.

    Can somebody fill me in why 9-42 is seen as it has lack of range? I mean I ride 11-42 and(11 xt) and I wish the higher gears were tighter more like the road cassettes and 9-42 is probably the best solution for those that want to go fast with a gravel bike as well.

    • @MrWartser
      @MrWartser 4 года назад

      when russ mentions "range" i think what he really means is lower gear ratios. 56:08 he specifically mentions carrying stuff and wanting more "range." then later laments the lack of hackability for lower end.

    • @Pillokun
      @Pillokun 4 года назад

      @@MrWartser Yeah I understood that, but even for me 42 rear and 40 upfront is too low/easy even when I climb up the steepest hills where I live and I am pretty much a short middle age weak dude. I prefer tighter steps between the higher gears instead especially on gravel surface instead of a big 50 tooth cog at back. But I do understand him having the ability or option to run such big cog even if I would not be able to use it as walking would be faster then. :P

      @@Pillokun right. it sounds like this group would work for you. Russ, not so much.
      I was just answering your prompt for explanation of "why 9-42 is seen as it has lack of range?" Russ said range when he really meant lower end gear ratios.

    • @Chungleas
      @Chungleas 4 года назад +1

      By "Range" he means low end ratios significantly below 1:1 (40-42 is only 0.95:1) so really it comes down to using a different crank to allow a smaller ring to be fitted. I agree with Eric, there's no good reason an alternative crank and Chainring from another manufacturer wouldn't work with this group, but then if you've just bought a shiny new Campag group, you probably don't want to have to swap something as major as a crankset straight way. Campag could have headed the issue off with either a smaller BCD or spline fitting "spiderless" chainrings but they didn't...

    The funny thing with "Modern" cranks and proprietary BCDs is you don't have to buy into them: My Gravel bike is using 'Ancient LX square taper cranks with a 104, 4bolt BCD spider. I'm Currently using a 38t N/W but I could easily go down to a 32 and a 30t is an option, my MTB is using 'Hone' (remember that group?) HT2 cranks also 104BCD...
    104 BCD was the default MTB BCD for a good few years only abandoned when SRAM/Shimano really started wanting to try and make deviating from their products harder through a lack of compatibility...
    I would still love to see Campag remain as a manufacturer and European based alternative to the two big S's, but it can't be easy these days given the pace of the markets they're in, and honestly they'd not be my first, second or probably even third thought when choosing a drivetrain for my own bike...

      True. I'm happily running 110 BCD dx cranksets from the pre microdrive era on a bunch of my bikes.
