i bought into the hype and got a 650b, and yeah i like it. but after a year of riding each, i prefer the 700c

Damnit. I’m having buyers regret. There is so little tire and wheel options

How long is a string? How tall is the rider? What is the diameter of the wheel? Fenders or ass savers. Ride what you have!

Rene Herse Juniper Ridge. 650b x 47/48 semi-aggressive tread, designed to roll the tread evenly on tarmac to minimise resistance. Good compromise for single track and tarmac mixed terrain riding, wet or dry.

Me personally. I like big 700cs. Going to be running 700x50c.

You guys must be tall. I remember having 700cx40 on a small size bike and toe overlap got me looking at 650b. I would have loved to run wider tires.

I keep coming back to this video when I start to think that I need to switch to 700c. Than all these great points and my style of riding reminds me to stick with 650b. Thanks guys!

Haha. I hear your frustration Eric I'm 5'11 and a half. I'm riding a 56 Diverge. I love it. I think anything bigger we wouldn't work as well.

Slow tires are slow. It's not about the size of the rim. You should make your decision of rim diameter based on the inertia you want and how the wheels will fit into your frame.

Older video but never bad to share experiences: Barzo 2.35" is definitely slow. I mean, it's a straight up trail tire. That's why it's on the front of the AWOL I ride on fire roads, jeep roads + pretty gnarly singletrack. It's a confidence inspiring tire and I think you'd need to scrape a barbed wire fence to kill the sidewall. Perfect for Arizona chonk. Mezcal 2.1" works great as a rear on this bike.
    650b for life. Fight me.

After rebuilding my old mountain bike to touring set up, I was thinking of replacing those “vintage” 26” wheels to 650b or 700. However, after few touring I noticed that if a person gets older, things from the once upon of time Fixie rider mind doesn’t seem to go hand in hand anymore. Lifting those tired legs up n down from the saddle don’t seem that replacing those 26” wheels a good ideal. So, maybe past wheel sizes make sense for riders of different height rather than the terrain handling?

Russ your volume was pretty high, Michael yes you should come to the 29er, ht, darkside as well as put a 2.35/2.4 on the front of whatever bike it is that you have 2.2s on. More stability and it will make the bike feel more lively. On the subject 700/29er is the better overall choice while 650/27.5 is better suited for trail.

$90 jorts is insane. You're going to be beating the hell out of them. Go to a thrift store and buy a pair of jeans and cut them up. So easy and then you get to spend money on bike parts. 😁

650B looks so stupid when you are tall. I'm 6'4" and I switched back to 700C. A not slopped almost level toptube makes it even worse. You should see a guy on a 64cm Midnight Special. Just hilarious. Plus on tarmac 650B feels like sneakers after walking through a river. 700Cx40 is king when you roll >40% tarmac.

I just switched to a Liv Thrive after struggling with fit issues on small men's frames (5'5", all legs with short arms). Ride quality is so much better! I hate shrink and pink (yay matte black), but the names are still awful. I would recommend it for a short but long legged man as well. I wish more marketing was aimed at fitting geometry not gender.

    A 650b with e-assist should eliminate the on-road issues?

I've been experimenting with 650x47 and I hate it on the road. 700x35 I've found to be great for the 70% road - 30% gravel ride which I'm all about as I ride to the trail and back.
The only time I've enjoyed 650b wheels is when I'm only doing gravel/single track rides.

I think it depends on where you are coming from. I am mostly a mountain biker so compared to my Minion DHF/Rekon combo big gravel tires feel super fast.

@@Zzzzzzzzzzzzjjjj nah, 650 is a lil smaller. But bulkie and sluggish. You will find some riders sayin that theres no difference and some say 700C is faster. But you wont find anybody sayin 650B is faster on the road. Offroad is the other way around.

How would tread choice factor in? e.g. How would a 650bx2.1 slicker tread fair on road/trail vs. a more aggressive tread?
I'm getting a Diverge Elite E5 (47/2.1 max size on stock fork). Already swapping the stock road tires for some 700cx45 more gravel-oriented tires (WTB).
I'm debating buying a second 650b wheel set with Panaracer Gravelkings for longer rides but not sure if I will notice the difference.
Planning to ride 70/30 road/trail with some light (1-2 night) bikepacking. All this is new to me.
