My sweet summer children, I expected more detective work than this. What does someone do in Brenner's situation? Kill Henry and all other possible psychic children? Does he leave them in the general public to kill and cause chaos until they killed enough innocent people to be found and "Maybe" taken down? I know you both know better than that but let your own biases dictate your hate. Don't get me wrong, he's definitely done some terrible things. However, he's the reason those kids weren't hunted down by the Government years ago and taught them to use their powers for good. He even figured out a way to prevent them from using their abilities safely. He is right, Jane/El is to blame for freeing Henry. She's to blame for banishing him to the Upside down. She's the reason but she didn't know or understand her actions. Had Brenner not trained El, she might not have been powerful enough to fight against Henry before he killed her. Remember, he started with animals and his own family. Imagine letting him live in society killing people with his mind. No one would be able to stop him or know what he's doing. It's Kira all over again but instead of "criminals" it's anyone he wants. Also, El has killed and I believe that's the plot thread for season 5, they set up here and last season. El will have to become a monster to defeat the monster and die herself. Her powers and others like her out there will eventually spawn more Henry. 8 was supposed to show you that. She was willing to kill and if she had El powers, she wouldn't need a gun to do so. Hope you realize where this story is going, "better to die a hero than live long enough to see yourself become the villain."

I hadn't realized this before, but Matthew Modine (who plays 'Papa') was in the movie Full Metal Jacket as Private Joker. Dude is an icon and played his role as Dr. Brenner very well. Very conflicted feelings towards him.
Journey has so many hits and the song played in this episode is called Separate Ways. As for Billy, Dacre Montgomery did a good job. If y’all like to see more of him, check out the feature film Power Rangers (2017).
“Billy haters” Spartan is reading the room wrong. For me, I don’t hate Billy, I just won’t fawn over him for 1 good deed. S&P kinda set themselves up for the negative responses by spending 2 seasons talking about a Barb comeback, and once they finally accepted she was gone, they moved on to Billy. Here we are 8 episodes into S4 and they still talk about Billy. He’s long gone. The only influence he’s had this season is how Max is dealing with his loss and they’ve totally missed how good her performances have been because they are fixated on Billy.
51:22 *Billy definitely DID NOT get his redemption arc.* I understand why people think so, as I've fallen for that trick with other fictional characters. However, after watching a video essay on the redemption arcs of antagonist characters, I've realized that sacrificing themselves alone, does not redeem them. It makes us empathize for them, for sure. But to me, redemption begins with seeing the antagonist to the long work to get better. Not just sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Imagine you had an abuse parent, who never corrected their wrongs, but they decide to sacrifice themselves to save your life. Would that be enough to repair your relationship? Probably not. It would be a start, but not enough for you to think they are a completely changed person.
One bullet killed that one in the hospital bed maybe because it was a direct hit in the mouth, but it was also a demodog, not a demogorgon. Just like how Dart was a demodog and much weaker/travelled in packs compared to the large demogorgons who are more tanky.
The interesting thing about this remix of "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" is that the original writer from Journey came forward and said this was their ORIGINAL vision for the song but at the time of the original recording the lacked the technology to make this kind of sound. I read that in an article about it and found it fascinating, and yes it has always been a banger but this version will always be on my vibes playlist for sure. It speaks to the depths of my soul on the desperation and darkness of unreciprocated love.
@@td811because will being gay and in love with mike has and will have a huge impact on the story and on will and mikes characters. that’s why. he’s not just gay because they need a gay character. will has always been and outcast and bullied due to being “sensitive” (which we know is another way of saying gay), and being closeted in the 80s was extremely hard due to aids stigma and homophobic society. so yes it does matter.

The actors reportedly developed a very close father-daughter sort of bond on set in the first season and have remained close ever since. Not, one hopes, as toxic a variant as their characters, but I'm sure that relationship helped them a lot with their scenes together.
Spartan and Pudgey are young'uns. LOL! There's likely a lot of 1980s classics they haven't heard before. That's another thing that's great about this show, it exposes new generations to some of the music of that era, etc.
I'm Gen X (right smack in the middle) and teach 16-18 year olds and I'm always floored at some of the cultural material (films, actors, songs, bands, history) that I think they should know due to their icon status, but then I think about some of the actors and singers/rappers, influencers of their culture and I'm always like, "who the hell is that?"
@@ahappyshowI mean I'm 19 and I've heard of journey and listen to a ton of rock/music from not just my generation but also 80s and 90s music. But apart from my own experience with music I feel like this song and many others are very famous that everyone has heard it at least once😅, I think they just have a lot of catching up to do for music and pop culture haha
People like Brenner actually believe they are doing the right thing. They believe that they know better than anyone else what’s at stake and what decisions have to be made. And because they are so sure they are right, any evil can be justified as done in service to the greater good. He isn’t dangerous because he’s almost got some good in him. He’s dangerous because he’s willing to do anything in pursuit of his goals and he’s sure to his core those goals aren’t selfish, biased, or wrong. Of course, his goals are all selfish, biased, and wrong but he can’t see it because of his poor character.
@hephner78 Yeah i know, it's just frustrating to have them simp for a "toxic alpha male" when Bob, Unknown Hero Agent Man and others are barely a footnote in their reactions.
It’s because Argyle is really annoying I hated him in the show he felt so out of place and just existed to give Jonathon a side kick that could give him more lines
Not sure if you have picked up on it.. but Will is gay. He has feelings for Mike, and is Jealous of Elle. Two things were mentioned in season one. it's said his father left because his son was a fairy, and when he supposedly died the boys that used to tease him said he finally earned his fairy wings.. thats why he drew the picture of the party with Mike being the heart of the group.
@@rwfqel We the correct word is envious which everyone uses jealous when they mean envious. And yes can could be envious That doesn't mean he hates El or has anything against her. I can be happy my friend won the lottery but still be envious of them for doing it
@@harryballsak1123 exactly. i mean of course he's sad and all about all of this but i think he's happier for el and mike than envious, you know what i mean?
I loved this episode. Gives me chills every time eleven takes down that chopper and the next one is literally a movie. But the music when they’re going towards the house really makes it seem like they’re going to war and it made the trailer so so good. Literally a perfect soundtrack
The thing that makes Brenner a really realistic villain is that he absolutely believes he’s in the right. He’s manipulative and uses people like pawns but it’s in service of something he holds to be more important than anything else. He has a few redeeming qualities but he’s so awful in so many crucial ways.
Journey never cracked the top 40 in Europe or Australia. So with that and the fact that S&P are several generation removed from when the songs were released it’s not shocking that they aren’t familiar. I’m sure there’s tons of things that are popular and well known to them that people in N.A. have never heard of.
Don't discount the. generational thing for sure. I've been in US all my life and I definitely recognize and could probably attempt to sing a good chunk of that song, but I didn't actually know it was Journey - it's not like I own the album or was around when it first hit the airwaves. And I'm a fair bit older than these two.
In the Season 3 finale Hop says to El that he was going to go to the machine, because the monster is after El, so she must be safe. "You need to understand." These are his last words to El. And El nods. Brenner's last words were also "Please tell me you understand." And although El had tears on her cheek, she didn't nod, and didn't say she understood. She said "Good-bye, Papa."
Brenner is just a terrible person, there is no sentiment to be found in whether he loved the kids. Justice for Benny. No main characters were killed off in the last 3 seasons. Barb was a minor character. Bob was a side character introduced just for one season. Billy was a bit part character in season 2 and only became "main" as an antagonist for season 3, but was never considered part of the group of main characters. They teased Hopper dying but with him coming back this season, he doesn't count as a death obviously. As good as this show is, it tricks you into thinking main characters have died, when all of the main protagonists are alive up to this point - I won't spoil what happens next obviously! Can't wait for the next episode.
You can really tell what kind of people Spartan and Pudgey are with their hate for Argyle and love for Billy. Enjoy their reactions, but doubt id enjoy them in person 😂
@@victorvillanueva205they’re implying because they hate a kind character and love one behaving badly because he’s an abused teenage boy, they’re bad people, but it’s a flawed logic and assumption…
the characters that spice up a story and make it interesting doesn't reflect the characters we'd necessarily hang out with 🤣 thought that would be common sense
Brenner saying "what have you done" is not him thinking she killed everyone. He's asking if she realizes what she has done by her freeing Vecna. That's what he meant.
Henry is what El would have been if she had gone wrong - in fact, if she had not escaped in season 1 and met the gang, I think in the end, Papa would have created a second Henry. It isn't what he wanted, but it is what he would have gotten. Remember, we have been told that the idea was to create a remote assassin - that is what El was supposed to be. An assassin and a spy, someone who could gather information remotely and then kill anyone she was told to. That's why the one military guy was trying to find and kill her, because he believed she was what the project had been trying to create but she was not under the control of the government. He was wrong, but it was understandable.
To everybody shocked that they did not know about KGB or Journey.. it is possible when you’re from a completely different country. I’m an immigrant in the US and every time somebody acts like this towards me I ask if they know my country’s history or culture 😂 just because it’s supposed to be a worldwide thing (talking about the worlds superpowers) doesn’t mean I’ve seen that movie or heard about that band (or even the Manhattan Project). KGB, Chernobyl? I’m Polish and I know too much about it, but Journey? Nope 😅
Funny that you guys have never heard of Journey. I wouldn't say that Mike is becoming like Ted. In fact even though they are father and son, I don't think Mike and Ted like each other that much (hell I even question on whether or not Mike is actually Ted's son as we saw Karen almost cheat, but that's a whole other topic). I think it is because his parent had a pretty loveless marriage (I say that due to a conversation between Nancy and Jonathan in season 1 with her saying that her mother married Ted more for financial stability and not for love, and the fact that we see Karen almost cheat on Ted), and therefore Mike has trouble picking up emotional cues or "reading the room". He has been called out on it quite a few times. Season 1 Dustin told him commented on his "complete obliviousness", season 3 Lucas called him "Hopeless" when Mike was trying to reconcile with El. Will crying signifies that Will seeing that he has to give up on his infatuation with Mike. That Mike is never going to see Will the way that Will wants him to see him. I don't know why they made Mike Will's crush, but I hope in season 5 that Will has a boyfriend and it is not Mike ( it doesn't have to be a major character). Be prepared for another wild ride for the season finale.Soon you will be in agony waiting like the rest of us.
or he could be in love with him, and he can’t even tell him right now let alone confess his feelings for him, and he doesn’t need one, just like how robin doesn’t need a gf, not everyone has to have a partner, being happy single is even more important and all should be before getting into a relationship otherwise it won’t end up well
Ya guys that song was called “separate ways” by JOURNEY! CLASSIC 80s AMAZING MUSIC! They have several great songs. “Don’t stop believing “, Any way you want it” “open arms” ….. you can’t go wrong! Definitely playlist material!
Pudgey (about Brenner): "He's so hard to like and trust." Um, yeah... he's a villain. It's great you guys look for the good in even the most reprehensible characters, and even outright villains can be shown too be more dimensional, but sometimes a villain is truly a villain.
Song is the trailerized version of Separate Ways by Journey, produced by Bryce Miller of Alloy Tracks. That version (as well as the original of course) is available on streaming services etc
Billy has always been one of my favorite characters in this show because of his development. The thing is, I never thought Billy would have the same redemption as Steve, nor did I want him to because they’re not the same people. Sorry, but I just think y’all give him credit in some places where he doesn’t deserve it. I agree that he had changed in some good ways, but not enough to paint him as the heroic superhero that would’ve become part of the friend group with Max and the crew. That feels like delusion.
It all comes down to the next episode. I was so thrilled the last 3 episodes are as long as they are. 3 of the more thrilling and legendary episodes in the history of show, imo. The season finale is spectacular and I look forward to re-living the episode with you two!
Seperate Ways was one of my all time fave songs by Journey, and what a JOURNEY we're goin on. Gear up for the finale guys. It's the definition of an emotional white knuckle ride!
Woah! Ok, this is definitely one of those “because I was high” types of observations (cause I was….high lol), so it may or may not be a reach lol. But around 37:27, take a look at the pink octagonal shaped lights that are connected together on the wall behind S&P and the overall design they’re making. It kind of resembles (if you flip it vertically ↕️) the layout of Dr. Brenners body no? (almost like a chalk outline of a body). Sooo yeah, just wanted to share that…Bumblebeetuna!!!
Do you guys not know the band Journey?!!! This was an epic, Stranger Things version of this song that was very popular in the 80’s. A vast majority of the music from Stranger Things is from the 80’s
I can SO relate to the way Spartan reacted to the Journey song/scene at the end of this episode. It’s perfect!!! It encapsulates all of the emotion going into the finale… I already had the regular version of that song in my playlist, but I had to go grab it off the season 4 soundtrack as well so I could have this remixed “more epic” version. Haha 🤘🏻So so so good!
Sooooo excited to get into this one… El’s scream playing over the helicopter blades will never not give me chills. Sad to say I cried a little for El when Brenner was saying goodbye, but I don’t cry on rewatches. So so so stoked for the next upload too! Just sucks that you both will now join the club of “Waiting 5 years for a new ST season” LOL. thank you for sharing, much much love!❤️
Death in movies and TV: Seeing the bullet strike Papa followed by a 5 minute death scene that ends with a slow crane shot spiraling away from the body is met with "I think that's an official death"
I think we're going to see him in S5, along with Owens, being tortured for information. Military medics can save Papa, and Sullivan is going to want to speak with him. Just a theory.
Millie’s acting (well, all of it) when she shows her disbelief at Mike being actually there, and her elation, you can so clearly see it on her face, she clearly communicates these emotions to the audience. No, Brenner isn’t conflicting, he still…still tried to exert his control over her with his literal final breaths..and her response is so perfect, showing her maturity, not vindictive, just..goodbye. She realized he was lost, and could never change. (Just Brenner..and 200 soldiers, and 100 scientists..) Why, why do ppl say dumb stuff like “for the show to be great, we have to lose a main character.” Nothing is farther from the truth. You need a great story with great acting for a great show, not gratuitously killing off characters.

As for Billy, Dacre Montgomery did a good job. If y’all like to see more of him, check out the feature film Power Rangers (2017).
Only if he played Billy :P
“Billy haters” Spartan is reading the room wrong. For me, I don’t hate Billy, I just won’t fawn over him for 1 good deed.
S&P kinda set themselves up for the negative responses by spending 2 seasons talking about a Barb comeback, and once they finally accepted she was gone, they moved on to Billy. Here we are 8 episodes into S4 and they still talk about Billy. He’s long gone. The only influence he’s had this season is how Max is dealing with his loss and they’ve totally missed how good her performances have been because they are fixated on Billy.
Honestly the fixation on Billy almost made me quit these reaction videos.
Brenner did one "almost" kind thing. Now Spartan and Pudgey will hail him as the hero, just like Billy LOL
They remade the song for this episode. The original is amazing but I love this version too, it’s epic.
"We are SOO ready for the finale!!"

Sooooo... Guessing we didn't pick up on the Will somewhat coming out to Mike part...???
Neither did Mike to be fair. Only Jonathan got it.
Why does it matter?

@@td811because will being gay and in love with mike has and will have a huge impact on the story and on will and mikes characters. that’s why. he’s not just gay because they need a gay character. will has always been and outcast and bullied due to being “sensitive” (which we know is another way of saying gay), and being closeted in the 80s was extremely hard due to aids stigma and homophobic society. so yes it does matter.

I'm proud of El not forgiving him. He stole her life and abused her mentally and physically her entire childhood. He doesn't deserve forgiveness.
The scene with Eleven confronting Dr. Brenner is some of the best acting in the show. MBB and Modine went all out.
The actors reportedly developed a very close father-daughter sort of bond on set in the first season and have remained close ever since. Not, one hopes, as toxic a variant as their characters, but I'm sure that relationship helped them a lot with their scenes together.
Next episode could have been in theaters bruh it’s the best episode of the series
Have you seriously never heard _Separate Ways_ before? It's one of Journey's most iconic jams.
@@ahappyshow I'm only a few years older than they are. It's been a favorite jam of mine since I was 8 or 9.
Spartan is still in denial... but if Billy was in 300, he'd be Ephialtes ;)
The song at end is Journey "separate Ways" it was popular in the 80's. But they did a remix of the song!
Yeah, this season has more billy talk than Eddie which i think is a way more better character.
„At least he did one good thing“, yeah, well, same as Billy. Who also did only one good thing, right? Just saying 😅
exactly like sure he was a victim of the mind flayer but it doesn’t make him an s tier hero 😭

@@DwaynesWorld007 might redeem him or some of him, but does not make him a hero
Brenner was a grown man. Just saying.
@@vilmavanninen6950 absolutely. But at least Billy was not a child either. He was 18.
37:23 and that's where the ''bro think he Heisenberg'' meme started.
Dr. Brenner isn't lying, Teri (El's Mom) did shoot a security guard in her attempt to rescue her daughter.
So what, Brunner et al were imprisoning her. And they killed Benny no problem, so they were a threat.
@KeenAesthetic1 All I'm saying is that the statement is factual.
The Eighties really had great music!
How do they still not know the difference between a demogorgon and a demodog? Like they’re a different colour, size and body shape
well they couldn't recognize young eleven either so i guess the australian sun is exhausting ^^
They can be pretty thick. You’d have to be to keep carrying a torch for Billy.
I think it was pretty established that demogorgons are like the ultimate stage of a demodog?
@hephner78 Yeah i know, it's just frustrating to have them simp for a "toxic alpha male" when Bob, Unknown Hero Agent Man and others are barely a footnote in their reactions.
@@Eniril1 Billy is hot. This is how the world has worked, works and will work and thats okay
Argyle is a comedic character, yet whenever he's providing some comedy, Spartan looks disgusted.
It’s because Argyle is really annoying I hated him in the show he felt so out of place and just existed to give Jonathon a side kick that could give him more lines
Stranger Things never misses with the music
That was "Seperate Ways" at the end. Used to listen to it all the time
Not sure if you have picked up on it.. but Will is gay.

You're telling me you've never heard of Journey?! One of the most well known 80's rock bands?! Oh boy, you're in for a treat.
My favorite scene is when Mike says "We Will.." then Will says "No I'm Will, You Mike.." 😂😂😂😂😂
That song is called Separate Ways by the band Journey
6:46 - IMHO THIS MOMENT RIVALS EDDIE'S GUITAR SCENE! "THIS! IS! MUSIC!!!" 😅😂😂😂
I’m so happy yall enjoyed the song in the end like I did… I need to hear that remix in my car on blast… so good!
"Whatever helps you sleep at night!" Hilarious!
Eleven: “no you 😠😢”
Good to know i wasn't the only one who fell in love with the song its been playing on repeat ever since this episode released 😅
You can really tell what kind of people Spartan and Pudgey are with their hate for Argyle and love for Billy. Enjoy their reactions, but doubt id enjoy them in person 😂
umm what are you insinuating? weird take. They find a character unlikable, boohoo
@@victorvillanueva205they’re implying because they hate a kind character and love one behaving badly because he’s an abused teenage boy, they’re bad people, but it’s a flawed logic and assumption…

This is such an insane take lol

Brenner saying "what have you done" is not him thinking she killed everyone. He's asking if she realizes what she has done by her freeing Vecna. That's what he meant.
Journey is one of my all time favorite bands. Steve Perry's voice is iconic! Definitely check them out. They have loads of bangers lol
Nope 😅
And Journey were the worst kind of mainstream crappy corporate 70s/80s rock anyway
I bet they know CIA and FBI. Russia now calls KGB, FSB.
i feel so bad for the people that lost their RV lol
Spartan discovers the awesomeness of "Separate Ways" forty years after it was a hit. 😀
Be prepared for another wild ride for the season finale.Soon you will be in agony waiting like the rest of us.
or he could be in love with him, and he can’t even tell him right now let alone confess his feelings for him, and he doesn’t need one, just like how robin doesn’t need a gf, not everyone has to have a partner, being happy single is even more important and all should be before getting into a relationship otherwise it won’t end up well
When I was 16 I was driving around jamming to Journey’s greatest hits cassette tape 🤘
Spartan jamming to the 80's hits. You definitely seem like you would have enjoyed growing up in that era as Gen X.
Will never get tired of watching reactions to the helicopter scene, El is so iconic 🔥
They used that song for marketing and the trailer. You guys should watch the trailer since you are finished with the show.

Just sucks that you both will now join the club of “Waiting 5 years for a new ST season” LOL. thank you for sharing, much much love!❤️
The song is Journey "Separate Ways". For the series it's a different mix than the original version.
There's a very similar version of the closing song by Daughtry; (Seperate Ways (World's Apart), Daughtry)
From Journey's album "Worlds Apart," the song is, "Separate Ways."
The band calls JOURNEY, and the song calls SEPARATE WAYS ;)
Love the themes of light and darkness. Also El is so iconic in that helicopter scene
Fun Fact that song in the final scene was actually used in the trailer for season 4
