They did the same in Grey's. In the episode when Mer fall into the water there were a lot of chest compressions. They had to to that as well so they don't break her ribs or stop her heart
Yeah it can be difficult to do realistic chest compressions, since you don't want to hurt the performer, but so many of them are just so bad. Like I can forgive them clearly not pushing too hard so as not to hurt the person, but sometimes they're barely moving at all, their hands are in totally the wrong place, or they're not even (or barely) touching the person. But I think part of the reason Dr. Mike points it out each time is I think the average by-stander probably is going to be a bit worried about hurting the person, so it's one of those things where you do kind of want to frequently emphasize the proper way to do it in case you ever are in that situation.
My dad was in the military (around 1970s) where he befriended a medic in his squad and they still occasionally hang out and tell some "war stories". He once told me that they actually trained to do this kind of "direct" blood transfusions in emergency situations. Every soldier wore their identification, blood type, chronic illnesses, allergies, etc. on dog tags around their neck and in a situation where someone's life depended on a blood transfusion (which I'd imagine would be fairly common when there's bombs and bullets flying around) and they could not do an immediate evac or didn't have blood supply on hand, they would find someone with a compatible blood type and use a special kind of tube that allowed a direct blood transfusion from a donor's vein to the recipient. As he told me he hasn't actually needed to do it himself, since they always had sufficient medical supplies at hand or some kind of medical vehicle close-by which was fully kitted out, but he does know of a different medic who trained with him and had to use this method in a hostile environment on someone who lost a leg to a landmine going off in close proximity and it saved the guy's life. It bought them enough time to move him to a safe evacuation point and allow them to transport the soldier to hospital by helicopter, almost like a action movie. Maybe this would be an interesting guest to get for a video one day. An actual army medic to tell us of some of the stuff they have to do in combat situations to save patients from explosion or gunshot wounds.
Dr Mike: "~Call out for him because he's gonna be able to rescue everybody~" It's one of Jack's character traits/flaws that he tries to save literally everyone around him all of the time, no matter how hopeless or dire the situation
Doctor Mike never really understands that these shows are not medical training videos and that they have more important things to do than to spend 15 minutes showing every test being done just so a proper assessment of a tumor can be made.
@@claytoncourtney1309 I don't think you understand what this video is about, he's not there to evaluate the show on its entertainment he's there to evaluate them on their medical accuracy and that's exactly what he's doing
@@johnhostetler2167 however the shows are not trying to be medically accurate. As a watcher of a TV show I know they're not going to be accurate medically so Dr. Mike's efforts here are wasted. Lol yes I agree, what they were doing to him and his friends THAT was unethical. I loved Jack's character but in the later seasons he became kinda annoying. Sawyer was always amazing though 😂
@@Jehty_ Im saying there is a recuring trope with Jack... him saying "I can fix it". There is even one or two episode focusing on this. Jack had serious problem with letting go, constantly trying fix everything and everyone around him. So when he says 'Everything will be allright' - there is more to this in his case than usual. Because he is convinced that he can do everything to actually fix the situation and be sure that 'everything be all right'. Even when he shouldn't say that in some situations.
It is such a character trait that they dedicated an entire flashback story to its origin. "Her spine is crushed! I tell her everything is going to be okay, that's false hope, dad!" "Maybe. Do you actually think every doctor is a surgeon somehow? Also, even if he was, seeing an open wound and seeing someone being grounded by an engine are two very different situations.
To be fair Lost first aired in 2004. I was a freshman in high school and I'm pretty sure we were taught CPR with the mouth to mouth resuscitation back then. I do believe face guard/shields were available then too.
The thing we have to remember with LOST is that it doesn't really matter how good of a doctor Jack is. *SPOILERS* The island is magic, and it decides if someone's able to survive a terrible injury or if someone's going to die from something otherwise non-serious. :P
I never really thought the island was supposed to fix injuries so make as ailments. Like how Rose’s cancer stops and Locke is no longer paralyzed. But if you get hurt in the island ... you are going to suffer through that
@@TheJadedJames But many of them heal almost instantly and others have very long dragged out recoveries (like Ben after his surgery...they literally call out it is taking too long for him to recover)
@@TheJadedJames Generally, no one was instantly cured (except Richard, I guess), but they allude to the island having a mysterious effect over injuries many times, and events themselves would back that up. When Naomi's lungs get punctured by a tree branch, Mikhail says that injuries heal differently on the island and that she'd be better in a day or two (after being impaled by a branch through her lungs). Locke is shot by Ben and survives with no medical intervention, just Walt telling him he's got things to do. Those are just a couple examples.
Thats the case for most shows and movies. But Lost sucked when they blew the tension and told everyone that only 2 will survive and make it off the island...
Jack is clearly superman. He can see through skin with x-ray vision. He can hear someone call him during a plane crash. He has every specialty of medicine memorized.
it's also a supernatural island that literally manipulates time, space, and reality... The island legitimately de-crippled someone the second they crashed there, so honestly I think its pretty fair that jack is able to do some abnormal things as well (seeing as the island is what is allowing him to do it anyway)
@@TnT_F0X no, they're alive, but the island does what it wants, and the island wanted jack to be a hero at the start, so he could grow as a person and become the new keeper of the island later.
@@Elle... then explain the ending... Jack's dead dad was there at the ending. I havent watched the show in years, but I liked the island before it started getting supernaturally absurd. The weird anomalies that made plane engines fail and government tests was cool enough imo, didn't need a sentient island.
@@TnT_F0X because the last scenes weren’t entirely real, they had died at the end and what we saw as the “flash sideways” was them reuniting to move forward after death.

I was actually thinking the same, mostly because I'm reading the books right now after having watched the 4 first seasons (still waiting for season 5 to be available where I live)
one interesting thing I'd like to point out is that trying to save everyone and fix everything to a detriment is a pretty integral part of his character. He end up almost losing his mind at one point because he tries to control everything
I lost one of my loved ones today evening. I just wanted to say a thank you to Doctor Mike for helping me to cope up. My Parents are depressed, and I'm trying my best to calm them down.
The spinal surgery scene is basically about plot in the show. The guy with the tumor is a bad guy basically and the main guy doing the surgery, he's a good guy and basically is given the opportunity just to kill the bad guy during the spine surgery but makes the threat to the guy he punches who is on the side of the bad guy. Its complicated lol
I watched LOST as a kid, and wow... my parents were obsessed with the show. Zero noise while the show was on or we got in deep trouble. They would spend all week theorizing what was going on in preparation for the next episode.
I feel like you should maybe watch the whole show in some of these cases. Like, Jack cutting Ben's kidney probably looks pretty messed up out of context.
To be fair, I had CPR training in 2019 and we did that, but they gave us these plastic things (like a sheet with a little mouthpiece to breathe through) that we were supposed to put between our mouth and the CPR mannequin thing's mouth, and the one I had didn't even work right, so it kept saying I wasn't doing it right, but my instructor saw that we were actually doing what we were supposed to and the thing just wasn't working correctly, so she passed us anyway.
@@notjustafangirl7313 oh yeah we were shown those things when I learned in 2003, but the school didn't have the money to get enough for everyone, so we just saw the teacher use the plastic separator
@@notjustafangirl7313 I got mine in 2015. They showed us plastic thing, showed us how to use it, and then said you'll only be able to use these in situations where you'll likely have access to better tools anyways, so don't worry about that too much.
Yes. They couldn't correctly do chest compressions because they would injure the actor. Unless there is a mannequin or something over the actor. All chest compressions would be inaccurate.
To be fair Jack could have lied about Ben having an aggressive tumor for the opportunity to operate, pretend he didn't want to and then be able to use the operation as leverage, not really caring about Ben, to free Kate and Sawyer. I actually have seen the entire series of Lost. It's still on Hulu if anyone's interested in watching the show.
I remember watching LOST, it was a favorite of mine :) From what I can remember, I think older shows did the shallow chest compressions to avoid breaking the ribs by accident. Which I know isn't the primary concern when you need to do it in real life. Sure it could happen, but if it happened while saving the persob it's a "ends justify the means" type of thing. Also, glad I'm not the only one with a wheezing laugh xD Thanks Sam!!
Relevant contexts for these scenes: - Charlie (the guy with the head wound that they put gunpowder in) was in a very big hurry, doing something much more important, and they had to avoid an infection. They aren’t worried about his face, nor the “proper” way to do things - Jack is a spinal surgeon - Jack could know if his appendix had ruptured, because he is a doctor and might be able to make an educated guess based on pain levels or something else (idk what, I’m not a doctor.) She obviously wouldn’t have asked anyone else that.. - She’s telling him to lay still not because she expects him to, but because he INSISTED he would be able to.. (Not because he thought it was smart, but because he has a need for control.) They end up drugging him though, because he can’t lay still. - The scene you called “a joke” and unethical practice is not set in a normal hospital situation…. Jack has literally been kidnapped and is being forced to operate on the man who kidnapped him along with several others including children.. He is not that concerned about this man’s life. - In the scene where you think the towels aren’t gonna do much good, I’m honestly curious, what would you do? You just said yourself that they can’t do anything to stop internal bleeding on the island, so do you think he should just give up and not even try to treat the wounds he can, without even knowing for sure yet that there is any internal bleeding? - Jack continues to give blood until someone else forces him to stop because he is getting dizzy etc. - In the birth scene, the person helping the mother is not a doctor in any way.
Critiquing Lost's 'medical' scenes without having watched the show and the scenes in context isn't really productive. Just like you want to know everything surrounding an injury(that hurt ankle), everything surrounding why Jack, Kate, Sayid, etc. do what they do should also be known and taken into consideration. Also, mouth-to-mouth was still accepted practice when this show was made, Jack wasn't a general practice doctor; his specialty was spinal surgery, and actual chest compressions can't be done on actors in a television show without risk of injury. It's enough to show they are being done.
In Kate's defense to the childbirth scene, she legitimately in show states she doesn't know what she's doing but Jack is too busy dealing with Boone to do it.
You have to react to more scenes from Lost. My recommendations: *The whole situation where Jack calls out his father for operating while drunk and the legal procedures *The time jack has to choose between saving Sarah and Shannon's father *When Jack promises Sarah will dance at her wedding and Christian calls him out for making that promise *Claire's amnesia *Claire's night terrors to the point she digs her nails into her palms *Anything to do with Hurley in the mental hospital *Anything from Libby being shot Just anything. I love this show so much.
For the record, part of imprisoned Jack talking to Ben about the spinal tumors, including their "aggression" is because he knows he is the only one capable of operating on the tumor and is just trying to make it seem as urgent as possible so he can get out of the cage. Same with him intentially injuring the patient, he was leveraging the situation to ensure his friends get free.
I was also thinking that when he told Juliet that the X-Ray was of a “40-year-old’s” spine, Jack could have been making a guess to see Juliet’s reaction so he could confirm whether or not it was Ben’s.
I'm always so impressed how much information you retain, and how awesome you are at relaying all the same information to us. It's so helpful! I feel prepared for an emergency situation where Chest Compressions may be needed. Thank you so much Dr. Mike

The best chest compressions in Breaking Bad, because they actually made a cast for an actress so the don’t break her ribs.
Yesss
Dr. Mike should review it.
Yes, you simply can't do realistic-looking chest compressions on a living actor.
Dr Mike: "~Call out for him because he's gonna be able to rescue everybody~"
It's one of Jack's character traits/flaws that he tries to save literally everyone around him all of the time, no matter how hopeless or dire the situation

From what I can remember, I think older shows did the shallow chest compressions to avoid breaking the ribs by accident. Which I know isn't the primary concern when you need to do it in real life. Sure it could happen, but if it happened while saving the persob it's a "ends justify the means" type of thing.

Dr. Mike saying “my guy” is the best thing I’ve heard today I love the way he says it
"You're going to be fine." Wouldn't that just be trying to calm the patient so they don't go into shock and cause more issues? Genuinely asking.
Relevant contexts for these scenes:
- Charlie (the guy with the head wound that they put gunpowder in) was in a very big hurry, doing something much more important, and they had to avoid an infection. They aren’t worried about his face, nor the “proper” way to do things
- Jack is a spinal surgeon
- Jack could know if his appendix had ruptured, because he is a doctor and might be able to make an educated guess based on pain levels or something else (idk what, I’m not a doctor.) She obviously wouldn’t have asked anyone else that..

I love Dr. Mike’s sarcastic frustration! I can empathize as a scientist, some shows/movies drive you round the bend. You can’t unlearn some things. 😂
You have to react to more scenes from Lost. My recommendations:
*The whole situation where Jack calls out his father for operating while drunk and the legal procedures
*The time jack has to choose between saving Sarah and Shannon's father
*When Jack promises Sarah will dance at her wedding and Christian calls him out for making that promise
*Claire's amnesia
*Claire's night terrors to the point she digs her nails into her palms
*Anything to do with Hurley in the mental hospital
*Anything from Libby being shot
Just anything. I love this show so much.
I need to know what was up with Hurley and "Dave"
For the record, part of imprisoned Jack talking to Ben about the spinal tumors, including their "aggression" is because he knows he is the only one capable of operating on the tumor and is just trying to make it seem as urgent as possible so he can get out of the cage. Same with him intentially injuring the patient, he was leveraging the situation to ensure his friends get free.
Yes this! It’s just part of the story.
I was also thinking that when he told Juliet that the X-Ray was of a “40-year-old’s” spine, Jack could have been making a guess to see Juliet’s reaction so he could confirm whether or not it was Ben’s.
I love how Doctor Mike refers to the doctor/person performing medical care as “my guy” whenever they’re doing something horribly wrong
So I've got to ask- how are you going to do a real chest compression on a real person for a television show without cracking every rib?
I wonder if this is the reason why they avoid it completely.
you put a cast on their chest like breaking bad did
Gosh, Dr. Mike why so savage today, huh???
😂😂
He’s very passionate about medical inaccuracy!
I'm always so impressed how much information you retain, and how awesome you are at relaying all the same information to us. It's so helpful! I feel prepared for an emergency situation where Chest Compressions may be needed. Thank you so much Dr. Mike
I love when mike gets frustrated and starts calling him “my guy” 😂
Thank you so much, Dr. Mike for reacting to LOST! I've been waiting for this one a long time! LOST is my favorite TV show of all time and I think I cried a little when you weren't buying the medical scenes. Don't be trashing my Dr. Jack! Just kidding. I get it. Medical stuff aside, I hope you get a chance to watch the entire show and enjoy the crazy, emotional ride that was LOST!
"That's not...good teamwork." That line killed me lmao
Dr. Mike getting angry over inaccurate scenes (gun powder/How does he know his lung collapsed?!?) is a whole mood 🤣🤣
Doctor Mike talks as if he’s never smacked in the face a colleague while he performed surgery on his patient
You skipped some important ones, the ones I was actually hoping for :D (Jack punching Charlie's chest, Jack thinking if amputating Boone's leg can help, Jack's story about his life-defining surgery)
Jack literally just pounded Charlie back to life. IF Charlie ever wanted heroin more in his life, it would for the residual chest pain from Jack's incessant chest pummeling!
Sam wheezing in the background is my favorite part 😂
