Go to any country in the world and you can easily find people who speak English. Mandarin has more total native speakers, but you'll have a harder time finding fluent Mandarin speakers across the world compared to English speakers.

Everything we do, everything we are is built upon the single foundation that we have a place to calll home - the place where we recharge our batteries, where we can be at peace, where we can feel secure, where our soul can rest. Without a place we can call home we can build nothing, we cannot take care of our bodies sufficiently to feel the well-being we need to feel in order to function, we cannot have a peaceful mind in order to think straight and make rational decisions. A home is our number one need. This is why so much mental illness is found amongst the homeless people on the streets. The mind deteriorates because it cannot function right without having basic peace of m ind first. And without a home no human being can feel the peace of mind they need that allows them to do everything else.

They are not sewers, they are service areas for the hot water piping to all the flats, it is warm in there! I was a professional photographer commissioned to do two weeks photojournalism there, I got some great shots but the poverty is incredible, the holes they live in are not sewers.
I was working along-side the CINCI LEI project during this era, and I have the photography book they put out. I dont know if any of your photography is in the book but my god. As an ex-heroin addict i just felt a kinship with Bruce and all these people. Such amazing photography done in that project though.

I was one of Romania's 'lost children', forced into an orphanage in 1989. I was adopted by a loving family. But it was clearly lucky circumstances. Look at these beautiful Romanian people, forced to live this way, taking drugs to cope with it all. I was no more deserving of my adoption than they were. We are all the same.

I visited Bucharest two years after Romania was admitted to the EU.... the level of poverty and destitution shocked me. I have made friends over there, people are very nice. I hope things have improved since then. No one deserves to live like that. The kids broke my heart.

The problem is that these orphanage buildings do not use security personnel to enforce the presence of the children brought to them. A difference from the juvenile detention or the orphanages from America, where the security personnel force the "guests" to stay where they were brought in.

It was like this 19 years ago when my mum went to work with the sewer children and in the orphanages. She was told by people in the sewers (the ones who spoke English) that if they came out or hung around the nicer areas they’d be shot at. That is how much their government’s police force is trying to “help them” they called them the “gutter rats”. The situation is exactly the same 2 decades later...the government isn’t doing ANYTHING this is not a new thing.

That's very unfortunate that children and grown people have to live that way. As someone who was homeless from 13-16, the streets and surrounded by drugs, freaking sucks.
My father is a policeman and he tells me he takes them to the shelter and that he gets along perfectly with them, he has been working for 20 years, my mother is a nurse caring for people in the streets and they tell me to eat and then they want to be helped, they want money and food, they make 100-200 lei a day for around 40 Euros and my parents don't do that much a day.
He is handsome. My son stopped in Romania on his way to Afghanistan, he said Romanian women are the most beautiful he has ever laid eyes on. He said his fellow soldiers were tripping also on the women also. They are Latin, akin to French, language is even similar.
I am from Romania and to be honest, what you see there is just exactly what I saw even in America and England. Don't be so quick to judge. There's a proverb: "In much corn is some cockle" just like countries. Each country has some not-so-beautiful parts. :)

I was a professional photographer commissioned to do two weeks photojournalism there, I got some great shots but the poverty is incredible, the holes they live in are not sewers.
I've not seen that before, it seems very inefficient. Don't the flats have their own boilers or water heaters?

I was working along-side the CINCI LEI project during this era, and I have the photography book they put out. I dont know if any of your photography is in the book but my god. As an ex-heroin addict i just felt a kinship with Bruce and all these people. Such amazing photography done in that project though.

I visited Bucharest two years after Romania was admitted to the EU.... the level of poverty and destitution shocked me. I have made friends over there, people are very nice. I hope things have improved since then. No one deserves to live like that. The kids broke my heart.

It was like this 19 years ago when my mum went to work with the sewer children and in the orphanages. She was told by people in the sewers (the ones who spoke English) that if they came out or hung around the nicer areas they’d be shot at. That is how much their government’s police force is trying to “help them” they called them the “gutter rats”. The situation is exactly the same 2 decades later...the government isn’t doing ANYTHING this is not a new thing.

That's very unfortunate that children and grown people have to live that way. As someone who was homeless from 13-16, the streets and surrounded by drugs, freaking sucks.
I lived in this city for 16 years and never had I seen a man come out of the sewer. (But yes their leader is called Bruce Lee I confirm that).
My father is a policeman and he tells me he takes them to the shelter and that he gets along perfectly with them, he has been working for 20 years, my mother is a nurse caring for people in the streets and they tell me to eat and then they want to be helped, they want money and food, they make 100-200 lei a day for around 40 Euros and my parents don't do that much a day.

I am from Romania and to be honest, what you see there is just exactly what I saw even in America and England. Don't be so quick to judge. There's a proverb: "In much corn is some cockle" just like countries. Each country has some not-so-beautiful parts. :)

@Rizzla s as a person living in bucharest i would say they should all be arrested and most of them have at this point. They are a danger to normal people and they give our city a bad image.
Because they want their people in their country to be thankful because they dont experience this kind of hardships. Yet i can see and feel the sense of belongingness with each other in that underground world. Im sure they dont feel loneliness there unlike in some rich countries in the west where loneliness among the elderly is now a social problem.
