@@speakingtruths4215 blah blah everyone says something is easier said than done, but it is not. She has a CHOICE one that I and everyone else can see will not end great for her and another choice that will eliminate the guaranteed future headache and she can get back out there and choose a better future spouse. What you don't seem to get is in life we will all make mistakes but the point is to learn from them. He didn't learn he just shirked the responsibilities to his mom, instead of him sitting down getting real with the bills and situation and get himself out of what he got himself into by doing the exact same thing he is now, not holding himself accountable or being the responsible adult he should be. Additionally, maybe you didn't know that the leading cause of divorce is money, and it may very well be the reason why his previous marriage ended. From your response you are likely in this same situation, and guess what I have the same advice I have for you as I have for her, RUN.

I insisted we have a joint account, he only agreed if I compromised and had it at his bank, He brought me the documents to sign. I later learned I was never owner on the account with my husband even though my name was on the checks. HIS mother was his joint account holder. Once I figured that out, I opened my own account elsewhere. BTW, they gave us an allowance as if we were children, from our own money! Co-dependency is the new form of relationship these days and this need to change as it has completely damaged our society. Everyone needs to be single independent on their own for awhile before entering a healthy relationship. There needs to be an equal amount of give and take in all relationships including work, love and family or it will always be imbalanced. Takers attracts givers and givers attract takers. I really wish the school system would teach this stuff to kids early on but the system itself is broken internally.

Not necessarily a school's responsibility! Home life examples from parents are more appropriate teachers. Sadly many come from broken or dysfunctional homes that did not convey what a healthy relationship should be. Fortunately, Tiffany has good instincts to recognize a problem that clearly exists BEFORE the marriage. The risk is a soon to be "wedding dream" she has already invested in would overshadow her common sense of the longer-term marriage struggles that are ahead with MIL.

@@carlaritchie331 I agree it's totally not all the schools responsibility, it should taught first at home. Yet the schools need to warn the kids of co-dependency and toxic relationships to recognize the patterns and the RED FLAGS. The dysfunctional parent won't bring it up since they think it is normal, since they have the emotional intelligence of a broken child raising broken children. Humanities most toxic humans are in their own home, and not just roaming the streets and sitting in a cargo van after school looking for their lost dog Spot. Knowledge is Power..

I care about my boyfriend and try to stay out of it as much as possible because it is sort of not my business, but at the same time, if he were to ever ask me to marry him, a lot of things would have to change first as it relates to finances. I think this is evidence of a much deeper issue. Mockery is probably not the best approach. The fact that she has already agreed to marry him knowing this is very telling about her. I would get them both to a good counselor to work through obvious character flaws both together and separately. To say that it's because his mom loves him has nothing to do with it. There is something much deeper here. I wish everyone in this situation the best.

@Marka L I think there is a time and a place to laugh at the failure to launch 37y/o, but this show isn't solely for entertainment. John prides himself on his counseling background. It's important to realize these are the lives or real people who need guidance.

@@YPEFFLE agreed, but there's the obvious question as to why she wanted to marry him in the first place. She needs to work thru this in order to avoid terrible choices in the future.

i disagree with most people here saying just automatically leave him, at least give the dude an ultimatum and let him see it from your perspective, be understanding and let him know that, you know what he went through but he needs to outgrow the past.
If he still doesnt want to divorce his mother, then you RUN lol.

She can explain, but shouldn't have a hope that he will understand. People don't learn wisdom from explanations at age 37. They might learn grammar or algebra from explanations but not the wisdom and courage this dude lacks.

I hope she considers extending her engagement because this needs to be resolved before they get married. They may lose money by postponing the wedding but a divorce will be far more costly. He needs to show he is capable of managing his own money and setting boundaries with mommy.

I honestly think this might be something that can be fixed. I had a friend recently marry a guy whose mother was too involved and she simply had a sit down with her and the mom started to back off. They are happily married now.

Many moons ago my mom's house got damaged in a storm, the insurance company would pay for a hotel while repairs were made. My mom was up in age ,I didn't want her in a hotel so I told her to come stay with me as I have plenty of room. A woman I took out a few times called my house, yup that long ago! My Mom answered, later that day gf and I spoke, she was convinced I lived with my mom and she dumped me!

The fact that she is considering marrying him = she's crazy as fawk! Either Tiffany must be very unattractive or has some learning disability. 37 yrs old? I would have dropped him like a bad habit as soon as he mentioned his attachment to his mother. I'd leave him to the Tiffany's of the world.
