I don't know, every time my wife and I watch that season, it always comes across like Pam isn't supportive of Jim taking that job, even though she knows he doesn't want Dunder Mifflin to be his life, and even after he supported her in going to art school, and quitting with Michael, and I'm pretty sure I'm missing something else. Even this scene about the dance recital came across like she didn't record it out of spite, a mom doesn't know how to record her kid on her phone? Realistically how do you record the intro and outro, but completely miss the the whole performance in between? Then act like it's no big deal?
I know it's blasphemous to say, but I always thought Jim and Karen were a better fit. Especially after this whole storyline.

If your child is performing something that means a lot to you, you'd have your full attention watching/supporting and wouldn't notice if your phone or cam isn't actually recording the performance. It's just how excited they are to watch their child perform. It probably doesn't help that older people aren't as tech savvy.

That's how you get just the intro and outro. I'd put it down to lack of attention, she was managing the house+kid+work all by herself and probably very excited but overworked for this recital, its a very easy mistake to make, plus most of her focus would be on her kid up on stage. There's no big scheme, Pam may not have liked Jim taking that job but she never would've done that to Jim on purpose, you've grossly misjudged her character.

What is a terrible idea is having romantic competition with JIm in the form of a character with no personality or development.
Brian being this flawless J-crew model type guy swooping in only to be perfectly supportive and heroic is such a kick in the face to actual story telling and character building within Jim and Pam's relationship. But that is life exactly man. You make a tough choice, you leave your spouse alone, the time/distance cuts into your relationship in usually the worst ways. Sometimes, that's a person literally "behind the scenes" finally feeling like they can make their move. I also think that this Jim has a ton of personality, more than we've ever seen I'd venture. He's a tired man, his true (finally imperfect) colours are showing, and while he won't acknowledge that some part of him enjoys his job just for the heck of it, he is somewhat torn because he knows that part of the choice to do it is because he's sitting on a winning lottery ticket and he didn't want to let life pass him (or his family by). You sympathise for Jim AND Pam. You're a little angry at Jim AND Pam. Brian to me, is the symbol of the fact that life happens to a marriage. Jim choosing Pam and his kids over Philly to me, is a symbol of sacrifice that is unimaginable but needed for all marriages, and Pam finally selling the house and moving her family to Philly is a symbol of accepting that sacrifice runs both ways. Life happened to them, and love won in a couple of different ways.
I didn't mean to type something super long, but this is one my all-time favourite arcs and depictions of marriage in a sitcom. Love won, but it wasn't pretty. Everyone made mistakes, and everyone made sacrifices. And by grace, love won. And that, is actually life.

People and things like that do exist though. I've been around people who were explicit homewreckers; they didn't even know the person well or cared they were in monogamous relationships, they blatantly stated their goal was to lay them and not care about the consequences. And you'd be naive to think that a "strong" couple isn't vulnerable; every relationship and person has weak moments (esp when you commit to full monogamy and everything is about "devotion", "faithfulness" etc).
The Brian plotline was designed to show that. Yes obviously they love each other but, at a moment of vulnerability in the relationship (stress from disrupted family life, tension building, partner goes through something traumatic without the other there to support them) it's easy to have doubts and feel attraction toward someone who does provide support. I can speak from personal experience having been away from my partner for a long time due to work that it happens (though the difference is we are in full agreement that we are "open" in our relationship and are fully transparent and honest about what we do while we're apart).
The Cathy plotline was different because there were no stakes; at that point Jim and Pam's relationship was fine and there was no reason for Jim to want to cheat, so it was easy for him to reject it. The plot point was nothing more than Cathy being a homewrecker which, as I said above, is something that is very plausible.

Looking at this fight scene on the phone after seeing it three times...it feels fake. Obviously, it is fake, but for a show with two very well-established, well-performed, and well-loved characters, I didn't feel like there was any real conflict here. Throwing another home wreaker into the mix was also very forced; Brian was one of the worst inclusions in the show. I felt that their failed dinner in Philadelphia when Jim just assumed that Pam wanted to move there was a much more convincing reason to cause their marriage to become rocky. Acting, character, everything about that scene was so much more convincing; the subtlety of their reactions is spot-on.

I dont know which is the more idiotic? The writers thinking it would be smart to have Pam or Jim cheat or people who watch the show thinking Pam and Brian had any kind of connection other than he was in love with her. Did she lead him on ? NO! Did she have a break down in front of him and he felt bad for her . YES! I have watched TV for 50 years and Pam must be the most maligned and unfairly judged character in TV history as the attempts to vilify her are so pathetic. Yes she flirted with Jim at work like others do and it was more playful than anything until Jim took it to another level. That whole arc is very realistic. The Cathy/Brian red herrings were lazy and stupid putting at risk a relationship that was carefully crafted and truly believable. To destroy this couple for a final season attempt at ratings and drama was truly ludicrous and thank goodness John was so aware of the importance of consistency in the characters and this couples importance in the show's success!

It’s not a credible argument to make given the totality of evidence that points the other way, but these types are nevertheless always attempting to advance this warped viewpoint about Pam, as well as Jim. It’s a major reason why I’ve never even slightly delved into the shows fan community, ‘cause it’s a position that’s just a bit too prevalent among the shows watchers.

I would agree with you if it wasn't for Pam's pattern of feeling unhappy for a bit and crying on the attractive guy's shoulder. What doesn't sit right with me about Pam is that Jim is always so patient with her, but she doesn't seem to return the favor. Jim is in Philly trying to make a better life for him and his family for all of what, a month before she starts crying on Brian's shoulder? While Jim waited for Pam for a year for her to quit art school? Meanwhile, he was supportive of her and wanted her to experience the entirety of art school. Idk. I feel like people unfairly vilify Jim more than Pam. Pam's vilification is somewhat justified.

@@ItsMeEllenB Oh, I totally agree that they're normal humans who make mistakes. I guess "villain" is a strong word when describing either one of them. And I think the reason Jim didn't say anything to Pam about Philly was because he knew she wouldn't be supportive, but Jim is nothing but supportive of Pam throughout the entire show. Idk. And she was timidly supportive after he proved the company's legitimacy until she couldn't take it anymore, which is completely understandable. I just think she went about it the wrong way with crying on Brian's shoulder and inviting him to their dinner date they had setup. It sort of felt like it was finally Jim's turn to do something he was passionate about that could also be a much better job than selling paper, but he never really got to see it through. Instead, he hightails it back to Scranton because, as he has always stated throughout the show, Pam is the most important thing in his life.
