- In this video our technician shows how take apart a broken steering column and then put it back together with new parts.
This steering column design is present in many Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and other GM's cars and trucks and it is pretty much the same method to fix them.
This video was published with the purpose to demonstrate the capacity that our technicians have. This is just one of the many steering columns that we are able to fix. Хобби
Hands down the best video for working on a GM column.
By far the best and most informative video on this subject out there. From tear down to re-assembly. Too many of these videos show how to tear em down. Putting them back together is NOT just the same thing in reverse. Thank you sir !
I agree with Rabbithash Riverrat comments that this is the most complete video on the common Saginaw tilt steering column I have seen on RUclips period!
I am retired now but working on vehicles since age 12, motorcycles before that and include lawnmowers to start with as once, you had to push it to get the blades to spin & cut for a $1. But mostly dealers when asked to take tests and earn 5 cent extra on flat rate pay, I jumped on it. I become an ASE Master Tech in 1978 when the sign out front said Datsun. Yep, many moons ago, as Elizabeth Warren would say from native Americans.
The explanations, use of grease, tools just great for this youngster in March 2020. I got the tilt pin pulled off the SnapOn truck in about 1976 and cost about $8.00, about two hours of pay after taxes. Customer pay was $24.00 per flat rate hour, new cars where less than $10K, but gas doubled to $1.20+ due to the OPEC oil embargo.
This young man did you a complete favor, way beyond a loose tilt bowl. He hit it out of the park with showing the masses the innards of one of the most popular steering columns ever made. I like it because he “Got-R-Done”. Yes, Larry the cable guy lives about 85 miles South of me.
You did a very good job and many will learn from it even if words or terminology was not exactly right or loss of terms. It all good! Nice!
Man you are really good, this is the best tutorial I've seen yet and I have seen a lot of tutorials on steering columns. Just want to thank you very much for your professionalism and expertise. Thank you for being very thorough, keep up the great work.
I have been trying to fix the steering column on my jeep all weekend. Hands down this is the best video on fixing these columns I have found. Thank you.
Best video on rebuilding a Chevy steering column. Thanks to this video I was able to rebuild mine for a 1990 Chevy K5 Blazer
Great video. Hell if i was going to buy the pivot pin remover. You can simply make one yourself. This is one of the better instructional videos. I do recommend this video. Thank you!
I was searching for the upper bearings for a 2000 Astro Van, the next generation of column that replaced this VERY popular GM and Heavy Truck column design, when I encountered this video. Damn shame we can not go into a DeLorean and bring you today's GO-Pro camera ! Your camera man did a very good job being on the correct item being worked on. So, despite issues of focus and lighting, and a few terminology quirks, I learned a few things, even though I used to see these columns all the time. You are an excellent teacher, as anyone mechanically inclined would get each item you were referring , each step of the way.
This helped me so much install the steering column repair kit i have for my 1992 S10. worked great and helped me through installing my new key as well as getting everything done. Hands down the best video for anything revolving steering column repair
I like your approach to getting the snap ring off the shaft with the pressure plate pressed down.
I didn't hear you say your name, but thank you so much for the excellent video! My column was moving up and down excessively. After I inspected the four bolts on the hub, I was surprised that only one was loose. It didn't move enough to cause the amount of movement I was experiencing. I retightened them using a 1/4 inch socket (be careful not to strip them, it is better to use the proper Torx socket) and replaced the turn signal ring. I reinstalled the bearing sleeve and cap as you demonstrated at 1:09:30+ and tapped them down into place. The movement was gone! They were not tapped down and that was causing the excessive movement. I hope this helps someone else.
great video, I watched it 4 times while doing my Steering Column rebuild. Everything went great. thanks again
This video has got to be the BEST, very simply explained and to the point with time saving tricks to know. BUT YOU HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE DETAILS.
Grate Video
You failed to mention about spelling errors as well. 🙃
this is what makes the Internet great. you saved my ass and I thank you
Great video, used some parts from another steering column and still had problems with mine. Replaced upper bearings twice and had problems lining up the ignition key and switch. Finally found your video and it helped another. Thanks
Thumbs up!!! The best instructional video ever!!!
You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you soo much this video helped my husband so much!
thanks for this video. had to replace my ignition switch actuator and had no idea how to go about it. this was a big help
Nice video! I really appreciate the way you disassembled it all the way it helped me realize that I do not have to, with the issue I have. I think the snap ring removal tip made this one worth watching all by itself. Peace bro.
you sir are a saint. thank you from the bottom of my heart
Great video. Finally someone actually does an expert job of a complete column tear down. I have been searching for this so I can rebuild my jeep column.
thank you so much test driving my van after 2yrs..great video. .
This is an old one but a very good one. I disagree with a couple things but extremely good.
Thanks man, saved my ass. Took the column apart and forgot how to put it together. Thanks again.

I have a 94 Chevrolet Silverado manual transmission. The 4 torx screws are tight but it's really loose. Do the clips break off the shaft?
Totally cool.
My steering wheel lock stopped popping up, any advise? ‘91 Chevy like the one in your video! Thanks in advance
Thanks primo
Hey my shifting linkage was loose on my 73 c-10 pick up automatic. I fixed that it had a lot of play but after I stiffen all that up my column shifter got all loose and doesn’t want to shift no more it’s like it’s not griping the long rod it goes around. What should I do try to fix that or just replace the whole steering assembly ?
I’m no mechanic I just know my truck
I’m learning by people like u helping us out on RUclips thank u very much
Good job amigo che che
I have a 1985 Dodge Ram charger and I am trying to put the rod that goes along the steering wheel that starts the car I put a new steering column and this rod came off and I don't know how to connect it. Please help.
You can get the tool for the pin remover for cheap at NAPA and Autovalue. I paid ten bucks for mine. GREAT video!~ I have a question...I put in the new lock, but I still do not get any power or start on my car. The lock does not 'spring back' either after you put it forward to engage ignition. Any clues for me as to what to fix next...the ignition rack perhaps? Thank you!!!:) I did get a new ignition switch to put on the lower part of the steering column. I guess I need to get that installed?
Thanks this helping me a lot. Mine is a standard trans so its different.. If you could do a video for 92 chevy with standard transmission? Thanks a lot..
I can’t find a video for a 1990 GMC 1500 manual steering column replacement. I have a lot of play in it and it looks different than the gear shifter column. Would it be best to replace the whole column instead of rebuilding it? The internal parts pass the ignition switch are all plastic and broken.
Is there any substitute for the tilt pin puller?
Is there a reason why the ring wedge under the bearing slips out and the shaft get loose? I put pressure on the shaft on the engine fire wall but the ring wedge keeps slipping out from the bearing. Any ideas? Thanks
When i removed the first outer cover. A small flat metal clip fell out. Now i can not locate a place for it. I have several pix of it. Have an early GM tilt with key barrel and column shift. No cruise .
awesome work man great job on, but I still didn't find out where the non tilt actuator tension spring goes, the parts was already broke when I took apart
DID THESE GUYS EVER ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?
Great video! I have one question though. During the tear down you mentioned that the spring for the wheel position lock pin was broken. How did you repair that? I didn't catch that in case you mentioned it in your video.
HE SKIPPED THE IMPORTANT STUFF LIKE THE PIECES THAT FALL OUT DURING DISSASEMBLY.
I like your vise. I'm going to have to upgrade mine.
You DiD The DaMn ThinG SoN!!! Your The BesT In The BiZ!
great video.come to florida.youll be busy
Esta muy bueno el video brother fuera sido en Español seria mucho mejor !
You can get the Pivot Pin Puller from NAPA for $8.00. I just got one yesterday.
Did I just hear you say that AutoZone has the top and bottom bearings that you said are prone to break? If so I'd love to know the part number? I've typed in everything I know to pull those bearings up on AutoZone sight but doesn't show them.
OEM AC-DELCO parts, if still available. Also may be sold under DORMAN ( HELP! ) packaging.
The gear lever, what's wrong when my lever has no spring to it, it just flop back and forth ?????
May not be using technical terms but he sure is using common language. Good job man. 😂
Tell me what did i do wrong. After working on the column (tilt) when i use the turn signal switch for high beams, the highs only work when the wheel is in the up position. If i tilt the wheel towards my lap and try to turn on the high beams, they don't work. Also at 1:08:54 i did not see you installing another part or it might be just for my year column. After the Beep Beep thing to let you know the keys are still in, well as thin as the metal is on that i have something that is about an inch and a half long, copper, and bent over itself. it is thin and has a tab on one end. I just don't know where it goes. Any ideas. This is for a 1979 Vette. Thanks
THIS VIDEO IS A TEASER TO GET YOU DOWN TO THEIR PLACE TO FINISH WHAT YOU F'ED UP THAT THEY CONVIENIENTLY LEFT OUT.
It is a year later, but the black spring steel clip hooks around the plastic portion of the key-minder switch ( that is sometimes what such a part is called, GM may have their own coined term ) The plastic switch assembly and metal clip are inserted AFTER the lock cylinder is in place. When REMOVING a lock cylinder, you have to REMOVE this switch and clip first, lest ye break the switch and distort the clip.
I have a 1993 GMC 4x4 that was in an accident and the steering column got pushed in about 2 inches. How do i restore it to it"s original length? The bracket is about 2" from where it bolts to the bottom of the dash.
Lyle, the column has a collapsing feature, so your chest did not get pressed in through your spine. It saved your life. The steel mesh is not replaceable. Find a used column somewhere that has not had the same fate. Be glad columns got this feature. GM was the first to market in 1967 with this historic safety feature. americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/nmah_1416468
agreed !!!!!!!
👍
Man my cousin did that shit 2day for my 92 Yukon!
This isn't the best instructional video I've ever seen. Great job. Do you have a channel?
my 1980 olds key won't shut off all the way switch removed no lock cylinder, real irritating.
You are fatastic muy entretenido yuo vidio thanks
Next time zoom in on those small parts. But good video.
Same question that Michael Thomas asked.
9:00 “peep peep peep”
TORX not star screws
Good video but, poor angles on the video. Very confusing and some points
A true car thief would use cordless power tools to make the job faster gettin that 1 thing to get that other thing off !!! Lol..😂
Why is lense covered in vaseline ?
You sure you dont have vaseline on you screen. Hmm ..
Sorry but the lighting is terrible .There should have been a shop light right above the work or at least using the light on the cellphone to see the parts better .The autofocus wasn't working right either .Also the repair manual does tell you what measurements for what etc if you get the GM shop manual and not the regular Chiltons or Haines manual which are pretty much garbage in comparison .
Royal, it has been 8 months.... where is your video ?
Ok..apologize.. I found the complete video.
i cant get rid of this crappy video on my u tube app
👍
