CHEVROLET STEERING COLUMN REPAIR | Ignition, Dimmer and Wiper Switch Replacement!

- Welcome Back! I had an electrical problem with my 1984 Chevy K30 truck. I was at the store and when I went to leave, the truck wouldn't start. Days leading up to that, I felt like the ignition switch was going out. I got the truck started and brought it home. In this video, I'll show you how to remove the steering column from the truck. While I have the steering column out, I will of course replace the faulty ignition switch, but I also replace the dimmer switch as well as the wiper switch. If your vehicle is equipped with cruise control, you could also replace that switch at this time. Although I did not do it in this video, now is also a good time to replace the reverse/backup lights switch at the base of the steering column. Thank you for watching!
Why can’t everybody do videos like this? Show the process, (very well done) and save all the unnecessary narrative that so many people add. Good video. Thanks.
Or the poorly focused shots of their feet or the ceiling of the car lol
Exactly, even though it’s sped up he gets the camera right up in there where you can see exactly what goes where.
This here is a prime example of why if you don't 100% know what your doing you should prob not try this a home. I'll be bring mine to a professional like this guy thank you very much. Hats off to you Sir
Earned my sub. Took my steering wheel apart last week. Other important things came up, and I forgot how to put it back together. Watched your video and just did the opposite. Thank you sir.
I haven't seen this RUclips channel in years
This video is one of the best I’ve seen for a process like this.
Thank you sir.
My former square body pickup was a 1981. Loved the dimmer switch on the floor. Old school. Now my 84's dimmer switch quit and after seeing how insane it is to change I'm going retro. Wire a switch on the floor.
Hope this works well...
Those wires are always a pain fishing back in the columns. Done that job more than once over the years. Great video. Sounds like it may need some high idle choke work before winter though.
This video was awesome really appreciate recording this entire process I need to do this to my Chevy 78 C10 pickup truck steering column. Wish I had you as a neighbor I would pay for you to do mines
Excelente trabajo!!!! saludos desde Santa Rosa Apodaca Nuevo Leon Mexico..

celso guajardo villarreal Saids That: Excellent work!!!! greetings from Santa Rosa Apodaca Nuevo Leon (New Lion) Mexico..
Looks like tons of work sheeesh
Thanks for the video. I am in the process of doing the exact same fix to my column. Never replaced one of these wiper switches before. Found your vid trying to figure it out. This helps a ton
Beat detailed breakdown I need to remember a few things thank you
Very informative
Good video
Why would my steering column be protruding out of the dash slightly towards the door? And not centered in the hole?
Thanks for the great video.. i got a problem on my steering column for your video i think i know what i did wrong..
So this is my problem.. the shift changer doesnt go completely into park position.. so therefore i can’t take out the ignition key.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Can you put it back together without the specific tool to compress the spring? If so how?
Awesome video!! pretty much the only one that truly shows how to disassemble. Most don't show the ignition rod coming through the cone housing the ignition and wiper switch👍🏼
Small price of advice, tidy up all of your under dash wiring while you have that bad boy out. It will make the reinstall way easier.
Love the video, the truck, and the music! 🤘
Hey milk crate you should restore the inside of that truck you your the one that's got to drive it. I would make it like a Cheyenne. Fully loaded version.
I’m missing a piece that holds the wiper switch assembly in place. Does that install thru the bottom of the pivot? Does it look like a pin with a flat piece on the end?
Your videos are always great!! Keep those square body’s coming.
Any chance you know what the 2 wire harness plugs are fore that come off top of fuse box? There only 4” long..
Learned a lot about harness but stumped on the last 2 wiring plugs
Good for another 35 years or so !
Have been forced to do this several times in Chevy trucks and in a couple G- body GM cars not really hard just tedious!
That is a ridiculous situation, did you take the column out for demonstration purposes or necessity. Luckily I unplugged and plugged back in the wiper switch plug and they started working again. Just a matter of time before I have to take the column apart.😕
More for demonstration but I have a real hatred for laying on my back and working under dashboards.
I changed it on truck not easy
Awesome video, thank you!
Thabk you, my high beam actuator rod appears to be broken. Mine won't touch the dimmer switch and is off centered towards the passenger switch. Do I need a new rod? How easy is it to replace?
Good work
Extremely well made video !! A+++++
What does the button below the ignition switch do mine just has a hole in it
Glad I found your channel. I subbed you, Do you have any videos on how to reconnect the high beam rod on a 1986 Chevy C10? I was installing the new ignition switch and the rod fell out that holds tension on the turn signal high beam switch. Thanks for any help
Have you wired a remote start on a square body. I ordered the compustar 4900 and hope to install it on my 76 Silverado with a 6.0 ls swap soon
Got a question
What’s the name of the switch at the bottom of the column?
Nice garage !
I have an 89 i partially took down to change the lower ignitioni. When i went to put it back together the rod was /is turned the wrong way so it wont go into the lower switch. As im watching this, it appears that it cant happen. Am I mIssing something? I Guess i need to tear it down further but though i would ask just in case im missing something. Thanks any comment appreciated
Got one for ya, what's the deal with my wipers coming on when I turn the ignition key to start my 86 K10. They come on for a few cycles and then stop, I already have replaced my steering column due to the bearing in the tilt mechanism falling apart and I figured my problem was in the column but after changing the whole column out it's still a problem. If you got an idea that'd be great if not no big deal I'll figure it out.
sounds like your circuit board in your wiper motor needs soldering .
I have same issue with my 87 and sometimes my wipers will stick midway
I did my wiper switch but it hits the bottom of the column. Plastic so switch won’t go down
At 4:34. What is that piece called. I need one and I'm not sure if it comes with the switch
Hey milkcrate did your column have the plastic pocket on the side? If so does it hold the ignition rod or the wires for blinker switch?
So how do you remove the wiper handle from the switch?
You still have your 2wd red stepsister?
Do you live in Dallas
I would have replaced the whole steering column with a Tilt rebuilt Column.
Well it really depends on who is driving it. I find my stock steering position pretty comfortable.
everyone- Ratchets are not hammers.
mechanics and myself- RETURN TO MONKE *ratchet goes THWACK*
Ratchets are not breaker bars.
Me: slides a pipe *ratchet goes UGGA DUGGA*
What is the name of the part at 12:32? Plz help!
Neutral Safety Switch

Luis Cuartas Giraldo Saids That "Hello, I want to know if I get spare parts with you"
Unfortunately the video was way too fast to be much help..
Hell naw don't have that much time
Should i bend my rod or replace a certain spring if my key rotates to 'off' while driving. I replaced the ignition switch but that wasnt faulty, its mechanical not electrical issue
