    Good video. This is a common problem with all GM tilt wheel columns from that era. I had an '82 Caprice that had a loose column and I just bought an entire replacement column at a auto salvage yard and installed it. Always wondered what the process was for digging into the column to fix the issue. Now I know. Too bad youtube didn't exist in the early 1990's.

    Great video. I am in the middle of doing this for my 1983 CJ7 Jeep. It has the same GM column. I learned a lot from your video. I also made a homemade tool for the steering lock...worked great. The pins on the side were really hard to get out but like you, they finally did. The two ball bearings are cheep to replace and they come with the ignition gear and spring as well. They are now a sealed bearing rather than open in the race. Also, as was the case with my tilt, the bolts were tight but the plastic knuckle was worn out. You stop short of removing the plastic knuckles but easy to do. Just rotate the short shaft 90 degrees and it comes right out. The plastic knuckles are readily available from GM as well. Again, great video! Thank you very much.

    You sure helped me out! I've got the same problem with a 1990 Suburban column.
    One thing that might help is to use a 1" 8x32 grade 8 bolt and nut to get the pivot pins out. That wouldn't strip as easy, plus using a grade 8 nut, washers and the steering wheel nut will work great.
    Thanks!

    Thank you sir!
    I'm dealing with the first year of the locking/tilting column (1969) and while they started changing the damned thing the very next year, this was immensely helpfull... (For some idiotic reason they used a big old 1-3/16" nut and no crown to hold down the first bearing just for 1969, but had an easy, spring-loaded flat 'push-pin' to release the lock-cylinder instead of that skinny philips screw...)

  • @MiscDotGeek
    @MiscDotGeek 3 года назад +1

    This was really helpful man. I need to do this job. I have all the tools except the slide hammer for the pins, but knowing that it's 8-32 is golden, I can even make a little slide hammer if I need to now. But I won't. I'll use vice grips just like you did. My Burb has the fancy turn signal/wiper/cruise switch, and a few years ago the wiring shorted out and smoked a bit. Now the wipers only work on full blast and don't auto-return. Hopepfully I can pull that switch at the same time and fix the wiring that burned up. I think it just got old and brittle, and at the time the tilt got used a lot. Definitely subscribed.

    • @MiscDotGeek
      @MiscDotGeek 2 года назад

      I just finished putting my rig back together (well... almost) after doing this, and I have to say: PLEASE DO NOT USE 8-32 SCREWS! Buy the proper pin remover! It's just $10. Doing so would have saved me countless hours of work. I had to get a parts column and combine my two columns to get one good one after the screw broke off in the pin rendering a puller useless.
      This was was more complicated than it needed to be. This video is a bit more explanatory too:
      ruclips.net/video/o_pPkQz5YXc/видео.html
      Your video got me started, but I am sorry to say that using 8-32 screws to remove the pins is bad advice, brutha.

      Won't be able to mix and match parts, you can change the whole column out.

    The purpose of watching these vids is to get a close up look at whats going on and “how to”. Filming from about 10’ away is useless.. the subject matter in this case is the steering column. Why film from so far away .?

    Hey Sir,
    Can I get your e-mail? I have a few small parts that I would like to ask you where they go back in. I can't send photos on this menu, only GIFS.
    Thanks,
    Greg

      Does the turn signal switch usually go bad??? My left turn signal switches fine just with the turn signal arm, but the right signal arm won't snap into position without me assisting it at the white plastic switch bracket.

    Well your camera angle is way bad and it's too far away for me to see what you're doing need to improve your camera angle thank you cuz I need to do that also with my 71 C10 but it does not have a tilt steering wheel so basically I guess it's the same process only it's not a tilt!!!

      This video will not help you anyway. The 71 column it a totally different unit.

      I know, I wish I could do some of my older videos over and cut out a lot of my babbling. I've gotten better about it with experience in my later videos.
