FINALLY! Thank you for making this excellent video. Your presentation is spot on & to the point with no extra bullshit. You've made it easy to follow along step by step & give excellent tips & thorough instructions. Thank you again your work has been a God sent for an old girl that has learned to do my own auto repairs instead of letting so called mechanics "help" results in disastrous consequences. Many blessings & keep making videos you've got a gift many others can benefit from.
This is, hands down, the absolute best video on tearing down one of these earlier GM steering columns! True step by step, with detailed explanations. The way a repair video would be made! I had to tear down the column on my 1986 GMC s-15 Jimmy in order to replace the shift lever return spring, which required.the same breakdown to the point of this repair. I was a little apprehensive, even after watching some other videos before this one. But after watching this several times, the whole process made complete and confidence boosting sense. Thanks, Hutch, for the great job you did on this!
FINALLY! the first steering column video I've found that shows the location of that little black spring located under the ignition cylinder for the chime switch. I have watched 10 videos trying to find where that came from and your video shows it at 17:19. Thank you!
You completely saved the day! The little clip that goes with the plastic chime insert under the lock had fallen out and I did not know where it came from. I had to stop my repair until I knew where it went. Your video is very detailed thank you very much!
This is hands down the best You tube repair video!! NO joke. Very thorough and very well explained!! No stupid background music. Can't wait to implement on my 88 Blazer. Your the GOAT!
Great video, took care of my loose steering column today. Had my iPad right next to me and just followed along pausing the video as I completed each step. Thanks for making it!
Y’all can say what you want… I had a long day in the shop with my ‘87 s15 sierra and this video made the thing that I dredded the most the easy part of this very long crappy day. I watched stop and the checkpoint like he said and it worked and everything just like he said…. So if u follow along with the video u WILL HAVE YOUR TILT BACK on your steering wheel 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thank you so much Sr. I was doing the disassembly of my colum on my C-10 and I stopped when I found out those pins that needs an special tool to be removed. Now I have the knowledge thank to you! I already subscribed to your channel. Very explicit! Thanks again❤
Awesome video my dude! 20 years plus since I rebuilt one. Nowadays everything is just not as 'easy' as it used to be. This video was a nice cheat code. My 1988 TA was identical, except for cruise, and delay wipers. Still a pain, but got it all lubed up, and a new turn, and wiper switch. Works great now! Thank you! 8-32 screws helped pull the pins. I did it in the car. I de-pinned the connectors and fed wires with a string.
Thanks to your video, I fixed my 87 s10 steering column, where two mechanics failed to do so. It wasn't loose, I just had the slide gear break and the first mechanic told me it wasn't made aftermarket so I didn't question it, got a second mechanic and agreed on a plan to put in a push start, there was a missing bearing I said I would replace, that bearing led to me finding and buying the slide gear and then your video. My truck is running again and I can't thank you enough.
Have an 86 fiero, and steering wheel was used to get in and out of the car by previous owner. This video was fantastic, and explained everything I needed to know to get the bolts tightened up. Couldn't believe all 4 bolts were falling out. Thank you so much for this, it worked like a charm. A+
I thank you immensely, after 100's of the same non informative videos, yours was the first one that explains what is happening if not put together correctly, finally i can finish my column. Thank you
Just wanted to drop a thank you for this video, tore into my 1989 Camaro with your video on a tablet and it walked me through the entire process - no issues other than the screws were not the problem, the tilt pins are worn out. Went ahead a threadlocked those bolts that were still tight. Excellent job, thanks again.
I have watched several of these videos and have learned something from each one. However your detailed, step by step instructions answered all questions I still had about this task. You make sure that the viewer can see what is being done where others left me guessing. And yes, I have to tear it down again to get the ignition actuator engaged!! Wish I had watched your video first!!
I'm currently working on a 1998 Chevy p30 food truck and this video is a lifesaver. My ignition actuator rod tip snapped and trying to figure out how to access it was a huge pain. Thank you for the video, much appreciated!!!
@hutchhiperf I just bought my first squarebody and with the amount of movement my tilt steering column had there was no WAY everything was looking good in there - to the point where I was already questioning wether I would be better off buying a new steering column, since I had never taken one of these on but since your video made it look so easy to understand I thought I would take it on myself...an indeterminate amount of time later, It is all put back together, and with maybe 1/4" of wiggle, where there used to be 6 inches... thank you for the time it took to make this video! I feel like I could not only do it again, but competent enough to teach someone else...there really is nothing to be scared of
Man I can't thank you enough this is the first video I found that goes over the ignition and alignment of the rod. Great video you saved me tons of time and helped me fix my ignition. Great video by far the best one I've seen.
I wanted to thank you for posting this. I did this fix on my dodge 88 b series van. Your video really helped me through it and appreciate you taking the time to point out the trickier items like the ignition engagement reassembly. Without it I would have been taking it apart again. All good now what a difference. Cheers.
This is definitely the best video on this task out there. It worked like a charm on my 79 Trans Am and I had the laptop in the car through the whole process watching step by step. I hope this guy continues to make more videos and creates a channel of his own because he knows what he's doing as a mechanic and also as an instructional video producer!! PS: take his advice and get the Lisle pin extractor. I got the stepped bolt version from my local auto parts store because that's all they had in stock and it broke on the first bolt exactly as he had said. Then I ordered the correct tool and it worked perfectly.
Just successfully went through this process on my '89 Firebird. Had this video playing next to me the whole time. Thank you so much for showing the reassembly process, and thanks for sharing this very helpful video- its the best one on RUclips for this topic.
Hands down the best video about this on youtube. I wish I'd watched it. I'd have bought a pin puller instead of breaking off a 8-32 bolt in the pin. That's gonna be fun to get out.
@@hutchhiperf It's been 9 months since I started the project, and today it's all but done- just have to button up the under dash panels. With your excellent guide, and an almost-bare steering column a friend gave me, I was able to get my truck up and running, and the awful wobble is gone! I had gotten so used to having to lift the column to get it out of park, even, that I tried doing it again. The pin that I broke the screw off in ended up getting destroyed with an angle grinder, along with the housing, so I could get to the internals to finish off the parts column. "fun" times. LOL.
Awesome video. Just went through and did it on my 86 grand National. Watched it through once, bought the tools, and did it in about an hour. Awesome step by step. Thank you sir!!!!!
By far the Best video on this Procedure.. seen them all. you specifically explained all the little tricks to the parts that can become a pain,, Thank you!
Love this breakdown of does, don't(s), cautions and recommendations. However (and I mean this in the kindest way), I was not expecting the bearings to fall out. I did manage to find them and get them back in (locking them in place with grease) and everything else went great. Thanks for sharing such an informative video
thank you so much for this, I'm working on a 1989 Sierra and I got stuck trying to put things back together. I've watched this video and I'm going to try again. Thanks!!!!
Awesome video. Even though there are other videos on this, this is the best I have found. Seriously helped me with my 1986 Fiero, Everything on mine was the same as this column. I appreciate the detailed description.
I just completed this. I watched other videos as well and after watching one of them I dove into the process. I was pretty much in the middle of it and found that the re-assembly process wasn't going as it should. I had 3 of the 4 screws that were completely loose, not a single thread attached. The 4th screw was only hanging on by a few threads. I'm amazed that I didn't have problems driving my truck (89 Silverado). Anyway, after watching this very detailed video I was able to complete the repair. Works great. Many thanks!!
I did this repair today. THANK GOD FOR THIS VIDEO. There are so many little details the other videos on the topic don't cover. Thanks a zillion. Your video kept my sanity.
Awesome! I was able to fix my 1991 GMC pickup truck with the help of this video. This is not an easy thing diving into a GM steering column and this made all the difference. My favorite tool in my garage is RUclips and videos like this are the reason why. Thanks!
Thank you!! When I worked at the dealer, my first column teardown was on a Cadillac DeVille. The foreman gave me a quick run down and a slap on the back. "Let me know if you have any issues". Trial by fire!

I have a floor shift column that i pulled from a parts car that had no key, I wanted to install in my column shift cutlass i swapped to a floor shifter but it turns out the ignition gear timing is off & I was unable to install new ignition cylinder. It only had run & start positions, no accessory & no off positions. This video perfectly explains everything I needed to know in order to rebuild the column myself & fix the ignition gear timing. Thank you so much!
I'm so glad it helped out. That's why I did it. I needed a refresher when I was getting ready, and couldn't find a clear vid that went in depth, sooo I made one.
probably the best vid on this subject. However, put the key sensor in before installing lock cylinder. much easier. gm tilt columns are easy prey for thieves. they break the housing between the tilt lever and the turn signal lever, pop out the gear, the locking rod falls down, pull the gear rack back and your car is gone. I've repaired over 1k columns from 79 to 89.
Best video yet!! I've watched three different videos, this has the best detail. Nobody else talked about the bright switch. I freaked out when it fell to the floor. But it fits back together nicely
Awesome video. Finally got around to getting my 86 Cutlass done. Video was very detailed and had extremely good information. Overall it took me about 3 hours from start to finish. All working perfect.
I just have to thank you for your video. The steering column on my '86 Vette is nearly identical to the one in your video and I was able to tear it all down and tighten those pesky loose four bolts that caused my column to wobble. Thanks so much man. Dan Petrowski.
Wow thank you so much, this is the only thing I've come across that actually explains how to take a column apart down as far as you have to fix the tilt wobble.
I have a 85 g20 chevy van I’m trying to get running and everything was dry as a bone. This is my first time fixing one up and I broke the pin tool in the pin and lost ball bearings since there was no grease. Thank god the junkyard provides and now I got her all fixed up
Wow thank you very much for the video been struggling with my 79 cutlass steering column and messed up now with this video I can fix it thank you again
DEFINITLEY agree. Your detail and video closeups and quality as well as the description is PERFECT! I have a 1993 GMC VanDura that I just spent hours doing the same as you did, and it's IDENTICAL! I also have a 93 s10 Blazer, which I think is as well!! I had watched at least 4 hours of other videos prior to digging in. Some are descent for sure, but still missing important aspects, and the lack of detail meant a lot was touch-and-go. I wonder if you may be limiting your views with your title. If you could include GM, or early 90's also in the tags, I have a feeling you'd be helping a LOT more of us!! : )) Thanks for the GREAT job on this!!
Thank you! I was about to give up on my 86 gmc jimmy's steering column and just buy a new one, but your video showed me what I need to do to get in there and replace that part that pulls the actuator arm from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch (mine broke in half). they're basically the exact same steering column. I gotta get the standard ignition us165l repair kit, and that lisle 19940, but once those get here I'll have it done pretty quick using this as a reference. Thank you!
@@angelojames8465 I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying the tilt is jammed in the upward position? You can screw in the tilt lever and straighten the column take it easier. Not sure if that's what you're asking.
@@hutchhiperf when I replaced the key cylinder for some strange reason that center shaft is now loose so now when I've put all the guts back to secure the guts with that plate that the pully pushes down as I attach the pully my center shaft comes up as I tighten pully
My lock rod didn’t come up completely in park not locked 89 1500 Silverado. Maybe it’s jammed and will pop out. Great job you did there especially part about that little time switch and black bracket that locks it in place.. mine just popped out found it on the carpet 😅
Thanks you for this video, I was about to get a new one for my 86 Blazer cause someone had glued the pivot pins in, and after I got them out I could not get the switch to line up. Thanks again! PS I like the bracelet, I make BTL monkey fist keychains if you want one I’ll be happy to send you one.
This is a wonderful video--thank you so much for producing this! My daughter has a 1988 Jeep Cherokee with the standard floppy steering column problem--and we have taken the steering column down (removed the pivot assembly) to the point where we can access the four bolts--and they are tight and in the plate--and the column is still loose-- do we need to remove the four torx bolts and allign the plate they screw into somehow? Appreciate any advise--can send pictures.
I see this video was put out, around 4 years ago. I have a 1988 Buick Electra Park Ave. with a loose column. Just got it tore down to the 4 bolts that need Loctite red or blue and retightening. I see your doing this at a bench with the blinker or any other wires that run down the side of the column unhooked. mine are still hooked, ( I think) as "I" did pull on them. I wonder if the first thing I should of done is find out where they or it hook's, and see if it's possible to get at them and unhook the connector. Of coarse, I'm almost at the reverse it all stage, but to even tighten the bolt's, I can't even see all 4 at one time with those wires prohibiting me from removing the housing completely out of the way. well back out to work on it
@@hutchhiperf I just finished putting in the pivot pins 1/2 way. That means that Ign.SW Actuator Rack or (funny lookin) aluminum piece must of stayed behind the notch. As to prove it ( and I don't know any other way), as I "can't see," the rod move when turning the ignition cylinder ( temporary put in place) other than "see if it will start"& It did. Means, don't have to take that back off! Well I was saying in my other reply or wondering if a guy can just pull those blinker wires (there might 1 other set) I 'm not sure, as I never unhooked the connectors. I pulled them the normal 3 or 4 inches. Only To tighten the bolts ( the ones needing Loctite) I finally got the housing for the tilt around the "threaded steering wheel shaft" by tilting the shaft all the way down . then "squeaked" by. Seems I "can't" get the socket on the bolts with out the nylon plastic u-joint getting in the overlapping way. I put the steering wheel nut back on and locked a vice grip on it and pulled towards the rear of the car this moved the U-joint back enough to easily get the socket on each of them.
Thanks a lot bro for the video!!! \,,/ 💀 \,,/ I couldn’t figure out that little spring for the steering wheel to lock. With your video I was able to fix my signal lights AND my signal light switch!! Thanks again the info !!!

lmao I freaked out too, I ended up misplacing it and I'm still looking for it lol for sure a bonus when he mentioned it.
Really helped with my 2001 WS6! Thanks so much!
You truly answered my prayer on this matter, thank you sir!
I'm glad to hear it!
Awesome video. Finally got around to getting my 86 Cutlass done. Video was very detailed and had extremely good information. Overall it took me about 3 hours from start to finish. All working perfect.
That's fantastic!! Thanks for sharing that. It's good to hear when it helps someone.
I need to do this to an 86 cutlass
Great explanation. I'm in deep and putting it back together now. Great step by step
I just have to thank you for your video. The steering column on my '86 Vette is nearly identical to the one in your video and I was able to tear it all down and tighten those pesky loose four bolts that caused my column to wobble. Thanks so much man. Dan Petrowski.
Thank you Dan!! I'm glad it helped you out.
Awesome video. I watched 4 other before this and was Absolutely blown away by this one. Thank you sir.
Thank you so much!!
Wow thank you so much, this is the only thing I've come across that actually explains how to take a column apart down as far as you have to fix the tilt wobble.
Thank you. Spread the word :-)
You covered up how the chime switch with the clip is connected before you pushed it in. Still figuring it out lol :|
@@DarkReaver13 Ha! You're right! Here it is on my website: www.hutchhiperf.com/g-body-how-to.html
Thanks you so much for the detailed video!
I have a 85 g20 chevy van I’m trying to get running and everything was dry as a bone. This is my first time fixing one up and I broke the pin tool in the pin and lost ball bearings since there was no grease. Thank god the junkyard provides and now I got her all fixed up
wow, I would love pics of your van. I just picked up a 91 G20. it was a mess.. and have been getting it back up to snuff... steering column is next.
Literally the best instructional video I've ever seen.
Thank you sir!!
Thank you! I wish I had found this before I took mine apart. Thankfully I did find it before I reassembled it.
Amazing best video out there of telescoping steering wheel tear down and tighten loose steering wheel. The four bolts at bottom!
Thank you!! I really appreciate that!
This was a great video! Could have never fixed mine without it!
Thanks!! I'm glad it helped.
Wow thank you very much for the video been struggling with my 79 cutlass steering column and messed up now with this video I can fix it thank you again
Thanks!! I'm glad it helped.
Thank you for a professional grade teaching video, great help!
Thank you so much!!
This is the best void. Thank you so much. Jeff Colorado
Thank you, sir!
Thank you!! I may have to go back and edit that title.
Great video, and I found your forum post.
Thank you!
Thank you for this very detailed video, I would have rolled my Grand National into a lake without it.
Thank you!
Thanks Matt! Good luck with the repair.
This is a perfect video for my problem I'm having on my 86 gmc
Glad to hear it!!
@@hutchhiperf I have a question as I use pully my center pin continues to pull up how do I prevent that so I can secure the lock ring
@@angelojames8465 I'm not sure I understand. Are you saying the tilt is jammed in the upward position? You can screw in the tilt lever and straighten the column take it easier. Not sure if that's what you're asking.
@@hutchhiperf ok you know the center shaft that you have to screw pully to how do I secure that shaft so it don't keep coming up as I tighten pully
@@hutchhiperf when I replaced the key cylinder for some strange reason that center shaft is now loose so now when I've put all the guts back to secure the guts with that plate that the pully pushes down as I attach the pully my center shaft comes up as I tighten pully
Excellent thorough video!!!
Thank you sir!
This video is comprehensive & instructive, step by step. Awesome Job! Thanks so much!
Thank you!! Thanks for watching!!
a 1/4" 6-point socket will work on those bolts. Great video!
This a really good video, thanks a lot. Really shows the little details and helpfull tricks to do the job right!
Thank you Paul.
Real informative. Have been putting off tearing into my tilt mechanism. Now I am ready.
Thank you
Get after it!! :-)
This video is great, doing my column now. Only problem I’m having is getting key to off position, everything else works wonderfully
Getting that into the proper position can be a bit tricky. Keep at it.
Best tutorial video on the Web about steering column .
Thanks GTA!! I appreciate it.
My lock rod didn’t come up completely in park not locked 89 1500 Silverado. Maybe it’s jammed and will pop out. Great job you did there especially part about that little time switch and black bracket that locks it in place.. mine just popped out found it on the carpet 😅
Thank you sir.
Appreciate your effort. You are good at this stuff. A well done video on a very important safety task.Hope that you do well.
Thank you. I need all the help I can get.
I appreciate it so much! Nothing but love man.
Outstanding video...thank you sir.
Most people saying there was only 2 torx screws to tighten but there is 4 I bought my pivot pin puller from O’Reillys auto parts it worked good
Best instruction video ever!
Thank you!
Finally some one with quality video💯👍🤠
Thank you! I really tried to be as concise as possible and to visually catch every aspect of the tear down and reassemble.
Nice work, we will be at CES Thank you for the content
Great info and video thank you.
Great information if you must do this job. without it you cant ... Thanks for posting.
Thank you for the kind words!!
Your wizard hat is in the mail sir...
Haha!! REPARO!! I wish it was that easy.
Excellent video...this may come in handy with my 1989 K1500 P.U.
Thanks. They're very similar, so I hope it helps.
Just got it tore down to the 4 bolts that need
Loctite red or blue and retightening.
Of coarse, I'm almost at the reverse it all stage, but to even tighten the bolt's, I can't even see all 4 at one time with those wires prohibiting me from removing the housing completely out of the way. well back out to work on it
Come back and let us know how it goes.
Thank you so much really appreciate this video
Thank you sir!!
great video !
Thanks!!
amazing video much appreciated
Thank you so much!
Thanks a lot bro for the video!!! \,,/ 💀 \,,/
I couldn’t figure out that little spring for the steering wheel to lock. With your video I was able to fix my signal lights AND my signal light switch!!
Thanks again the info !!!
Hey, thanks!! It's great to hear it helped someone! Have a good one.
