Lyrics: I've got a pocket full of pennies the heart full of gold Though my troubles are many I have treasures untold And the shack that I live in is a palace to me For the treasure of love the treasure of love you gave to me In this world there are riches that money can't buy Like the treasure of true love a love that won't die So why should I worry what tomorrow will bring For the treasure of love the treasure of love makes me a king Though my clothes are all tattered and I've seen better days Know it really don't matter for I'm rich another way Yes my pockets are empty but still wealthy I'll be With the treasure of love the treasure of love you gave to me
You guys notice how his string broke right before singing “though my troubles are many...” amazingness captured on film George Jones one of the realest ones that ever did it
Check out the steel guitar player when they pan over to him. OMG! It is Billy Mize who was so influential in the Bakersfield sound in California in the 50's and 60's. He went on to host Gene Autry's Melody Ranch t.v. show and later to play in Merle Haggard's band. Billy had a fantastic voice himself but did not get nearly the recognition he deserved because he did not want to go out on the road and tour. He chose to be at home with his family. What a great video. Thanks for posting it!
Dunno if anyone realized it, but this video is a "Splice" of two separate takes of this song, put together! I imagine this was done before the programs original airing. If my hunch is correct, there was likely to have been a splice to insert a second take of the 1st verse, & the 1st break by the Fiddler's, (as they came into their break incorrectly, & finished their break "off kilter" as well. Instead, they inserted a new take of the song from the beginning of the 2nd verse, which caused the 2nd verse to be sung twice; and if you'll also notice George finishes the song, with a different guitar than the D-28 Martin, which he started it with!! 🙂 Irregardless though, it is great to see this great vintage footage of George, Gordon Terry, and all the others!!
Despite the bad sound and the quickly-rehearsed-TV-show sloppiness with George and his fiddle/guitar man, Gordon Terry, fighting the Town Hall Party house band; George's vocal turn from 01:01 to 01:10 makes up for it all. And at the end of those magical seconds, George's transporting "tomorrow" certainly gets Terry's attention at 01:09. What does he say to George?
In the beginning the house fiddle player seems to be having trouble getting started and George turns away from the camera and comes back smiling. Then just before 1:00 gordon looks like he is about to say something then realizes the camera is on him and his whole demeanor changes. George's vocal turn may be just his way of saying I can sing through anything and it makes Gordon smile. You will also note in other videos Gordon works hard to mirror George's vocals with the fiddle, something that isnt happening here.
Lyrics:
I've got a pocket full of pennies the heart full of gold
Though my troubles are many I have treasures untold
And the shack that I live in is a palace to me
For the treasure of love the treasure of love you gave to me
In this world there are riches that money can't buy
Like the treasure of true love a love that won't die
So why should I worry what tomorrow will bring
For the treasure of love the treasure of love makes me a king
Though my clothes are all tattered and I've seen better days
Know it really don't matter for I'm rich another way
Yes my pockets are empty but still wealthy I'll be
With the treasure of love the treasure of love you gave to me
I love George Jones, there will never be another like him. Friday April 26, 2024 eleven years gone, you’re not forgotten. ♥️

I don't know if anybody knew that big bopper wrote this song
Yep. Both the Big Bopper and George Jones wrote it together
This one and White Lightning. He died just before White Lighting became a big hit.
Terry Gordon in Fiddle, fine as they come
Gordon Terry on fiddle.
