First time I saw this clip I was making a string. There was something about this man talking calmly. Second time I was making a string serving and locking up how to end the knot. The RUclips clip just went on. I was I bit stressed and I realise how calming it’s to leasing to this man making this string… There’s is something profoundly human about this clip. I just love it.
He makes it looks easy. I will have to watch it a few times until learning how to do it without a jig. The old man didn't grab any measuring device, only eye balling the bow itself, that is a ton of experience right in front of us, what a class. Thank you very much Sir!
I've been looking for this video for almost a video after seeing it like two years ago. I don't know how many times I scrolled past it because I knew the thumbnail was not the guy in the video. lol. So glad I finally found it. I think this is one of if not the best flemish video on youtube. Thanks.
I have watched many other videos about bowstrings. I don't get most of them as they babble too much about inches mm's etc. This is soo different. Love the man. I get everything clearly. I can make it now. It was soo simple when Gramps here explained it. Thank you ❤️❤️
Now this is what I call natural bow string making with common sense , jigs are fine at home but out bush and something goes wrong with your string and should you need to make one up what are you going to do with out your jig , most people wouldn’t know with out there jigs , thanks for sharing this video , old school hands on yeah buddy , loved the video . Great job. .👍
Besides learning A LOT how to make a Bowstring , i would just love to sit down and have a nice long chat with this old guy , just think it would be very interesting . LOVE THIS VID
So I just picked up an old Pearson specter 52” and decided to give this a try… Thank you , thank you!!! This is such an amazing method,, I cannot believe more people do not know this! This removed 95% of all the guess work with loop size, length etc I would absolutely love to hear his take on Aero tuning and how to pick the proper spine for your bow. I have a feeling he would completely demystify the entire industry
I love Mike! He’s always teaching me cool new tricks and life lessons at the range. He made me a beautiful bow string too! Such an amazing video! Thanks for sharing! 🏹
Troy thanks for your comments and questions. I am planning on more videos with Mike for sure. he has a wealth of knowledge, and I'd love to get that knowledge out to the archery community. Stay tuned there are a lot of exciting things happening in the near future.
Great video. I love hearing from people like Mike that are experts and demonstrate very clearly what they are doing and why. Thanks for capturing this for all of us.
Nice video! Really liked the mix of music and subject. Always seems special when old timers pass on their knowledge and experience. Looks like a great place to shoot as well.
Excellent video! -- In the 1970's, I made several bowstrings that used a single strand wrapped back-and-forth between two nails. And I wrapped servings at both loops and at the center of the string. But the loops had only half the number of strands as did the rest of the string. -- The Flemish twist bowstring should be twice as strong as the single-strand string. -- I'm so glad I came across this video!
Truly this man is blessed. The talent is amazing. I just switched over to the Traditional shooting from compound bow and videos like this amaze me at what I’ve been missing. Thank you and God bless you. Truly you are talented
i'm relatively new to both hunting and archery, i started both activities last year and i'm getting to be decent at shooting, but this year i've got a couple recurves with no strings, one is an old Ben Pearson Colt7070 that was in my attic for almost 20 years, it needs some severe love but i'm going to restore it, this video was the best thing i could have found to get started in string making! the other recurve that i have is an old Bandito, i forget the maker, but it's in really great condition, finish is scuffed up, but it's mostly well kept, thanks Mike and Brad!
Well done sir, you got me through my first bow string. I’m sure I’ll have to reference this video at least a few more times before I get it down pat, thanks for the lesson.
Watched a young guy make a jig and start tossing out all of these numbers and it was impressive how he had all of the math down but for me it was a bit much for this aged brain. I loved this video and the fact that Mike was willing to share his years of experience, knowledge and obvious love for archery. Thanks so much!
I'm right there with ya. The first time Mike ever showed me how to make a bow string this way I was blown away. He certainly makes it look easy too. Mike is the man. Thanks for your comment.
Absolutely great video Mike, truly enjoyed watching this man make this string. I'm a newbie to the stick and string. gonna get me some material and give this a try.
I made a cheap jig from a 2x10 and nails. I have never seen this before. I like it. I wonder if it will work the same for a longbow Wonderful work Thank you
It'll work exactly the same, you'll have to decide where the top nock loop will start. Play around with it... Look at longbows that are unbraced to get an idea where to start your loop.
Here in Spain it is almost impossible to make a rope manually and without a frame due to the poor quality of the Dacron. Can you recommend a good Dacron brand that ships to Spain? Thanks
Respectfully, you’ve got to consider changing your thumbnail for this video. Maybe even the title. I stumbled across it not as a search result but as a recommended video after another far inferior video. This isn’t the easiest to follow tutorial, or the easiest and clearest video, but it is an utterly charming 20 minutes of someone conveying knowledge from a lifetime of experience. It should have way more views.
Hi, there is one thing I don't understand, when you finish the first loop ... before going to the other side to start the second ... how do you block the windings already made to prevent them from unraveling by themselves?
Anything small that will clamp on the string where the flemish twist stops will work. Wife gave me a bunch of different types of little hair clips that work pretty good.
Honestly, the B50 Dacron that I have used in the past doesn't have that spec written on it, so I don't know which size it is, but Lancaster sells the BCY B55 in the #1/4 only, and it has decent reviews. I would bet that going with the #1/4 stuff will be just fine, just make sure you have the right strand count for your bow. When I'm building a bow string for my 35-45lb bows I usually put together a 14-16 strand string.
Made strings with all sort of materials and always broke from being to weak as I didn’t want to make it to thick, when I finally did the Flemish twist, It never snapped yet after a few weeks compared to the 10 minutes it used to last
Haha! Mike is the man! I've learned a lot from him over the years. Stay tuned. I will be working with him soon to film more traditional archery tutorials.
I could sit and listen to this Old Timer all day

Meeting Folks like Mike are a treasure in life. Thanks for sharing.
Amazing how seasoned archers can make things simple, efficient and easy to understand for newer archers to make their own.

I would love to see this gentleman do a video on how he does his wraps on the leading edge of his fletching,
I just think that looks so cool
Nothing like an old school experience.Amazing. no need for 90 dollar jig or fancy toys.
We need more videos with mike before he is gone we need his knowledge
Pure perfection, handmade string.
So easy to understand and to follow during process
Thanks

Thanks brother. I hope you're doing well.
Good work, this is really well done Brad!
You need a grandad to teach you right. He makes that seem so simple. I'm going to master this way, then anything else will be easier . Thanks.
Well done sir, you got me through my first bow string.
I’m sure I’ll have to reference this video at least a few more times before I get it down pat, thanks for the lesson.
Just started to make my own bow string and this video is a life saver!
Awesome! So happy to hear that. Happy string making!
i've been shooting a long time and that was quite enjoyable and knowledgeable. thank yew.
Mike showed me this technique live at the range recently. Fantastic technique, and a fantastic guy.
Awesome stuff 😎👍

Great explanation
Very detailed and informative
Nicely done! Thanks for posting.
I can tell he knows things just by looking at his knuckles.
Absolutely great video Mike, truly enjoyed watching this man make this string. I'm a newbie to the stick and string. gonna get me some material and give this a try.

Love the video, but for some reason mine seem to keep untwisting when I put them on the bow?
Awesome video.
Curious about B50 & B55 string....is there a video on various string components ?
If there is, I'd like to see that one too. Like a how it's made style vid.
Thank you for such a very simple procedure that I think even I can use. Will let you know how my string turned out
Informative!
I made a cheap jig from a 2x10 and nails. I have never seen this before. I like it.

Nice video. Good to know that you don't have to have a jig to make strings.
Great video Mike from Manchester ohio
Real Hunting🤠
right on, very cool!!
I enjoyed that
excelent job info
Why does it look like the string keeps changing color?

really Amazing !!
wow i can't get over how much that stretched
Tanke you big man
Thank you very much!
What am I doing wrong? The twists keep coming loose
When I look up b55 Dacron there are 2 sizes 1/4# and 1# which are you using for the bow string
Honestly, the B50 Dacron that I have used in the past doesn't have that spec written on it, so I don't know which size it is, but Lancaster sells the BCY B55 in the #1/4 only, and it has decent reviews. @@PointOnArchery I feel like a moron.... Finally got around to ordering and that number is the quantity. Comes in !/4 and 1# spools
Nice vid, Mike, Brad!
Seen and made strings many ways!
Beautiful Zebra wood handle, old Hoyt? Looks like a timeless shooter! Thanks for sharing!
Made strings with all sort of materials and always broke from being to weak as I didn’t want to make it to thick, when I finally did the Flemish twist, It never snapped yet after a few weeks compared to the 10 minutes it used to last

Great video but wow that’s a lot of info. I for see a lot of cussing in my future.
Haha yeah, for sure. Believe me, I shouted my fair share of expletives the first couple of times trying to make a bow string. Enjoy!
