    Best video about flemish string I have ever seen!! Short, to the point and you've mentioned all important parts. Thank you! Greetings from Germany.

    Best Flemish twist instructions on RUclips. None of the others tells you to put in the back twist, I had problems with that.

    I guesstimated the dimensions of that rig, whipped out a couple of screws and followed along. Proud owner of a brand new 59" 10 bundle hemp bow string that I am very pleased with. Since it's so long, it would probably serve well as a tiller string for the board bow I'll build following your series.
    I feel great, thanks for all this.
    Also can you believe that the hardware store in my city (it's HUGE) doesn't have any other wood than pine and spruce? Crazy.

    I learned to do this with the Traditional Bowyers bibles back in 2011 or so. Much easier to see from video! I never knew how to properly do the final twisting part so my strings always came out a bit funky.

    What string material do you use for your Osage bows? Can you use the high performance materials or do you want to stick with B-50?

  • @neotoxo54

    I believe I’ve noticed one important point that needs to be made...Your jig is setup to compensate (i.e. add in) for the tag ends you need to form your loops. I also use a jig like your’s BUT mine measures the actual string bundle lengths SO for long bows I will add 17” (actual finished string length PLUS 8 1/2” on each end for the loops). Either way, we get the same results. I just prefer to work with true bundle lengths rather than having a jig that does the math for me because I build for both long bows & recurves. Great vid. 👍🏻👍🏻

    When you blend the loop together do the ends have to be paired to opposite string evertime or doesn't it matter

      I was really surprised he didn't make the colors match at that step. I feel like I have a decent understanding of what's going on here, and can't imagine a reason it makes a difference, other than aesthetically. But I've never done it.

    Nicely done on sharing this with us sir. While hunting public land this past two weeks, I ran into a couple of guys hunting with long bows. ( I as hunting with my recurve) we got to talking about making my own, I told them I was planning on starting one after the deer season is over here in Oklahoma. They were telling me about OJAM, I think you have been there a couple or few years back I found it online and am planning on going this year in March should be fun they were telling me about a couple fo big 3D shoots here as well. I have done one in the past with a compound but never have with the trad equipment. I am looking forward to those as well. I know this is a long comment so sorry, But I just got done making a work bench this past weekend. Getting prepped for bow making at the house. I will start buying the rasp and some other tools soon as well, so I will be geared up hopefully in Jan if extra jobs and what not go well for me this year. Anyhow, as you know I will need a string etc, thinking about going ahead and getting started making some strings for the bows I already have and keep on planning this bow build, your book is in my cart and I will order it friday when I get paid. Thank for taking the time to share all this stuff with us. We truly appreciate you and your family and all you do to keep this tradition alive sir. Thank you so much. I hope you all have a blessed and happy thanksgiving sir.

    Would you still have to serve the string if you stirred the whole length and not just the ends?

    • @clayhayeshunter

      Serving helps protect the string from fraying.

    • @danielremel3417
      @danielremel3417 Год назад

      I had this exact thing happen to me, but I hooked both ends to a nail on each side to make it taut, then applied stringmaker's wax all the way up and down the main part of the string and worked it in with my hands. It's still holding together after a couple days.

    I wax the whole length of the string, but I also reverse twist the whole string and my strings seem to last twice as many shots as everyone else I know strings last. My cousin has a natural fiber string I made him that has way over 10,000 shots on it and it is made from yukka fiber.

    Maybe include on description to use dacron b-50 for traditional rather than dyna flight string for first time traditional shooter's? Just an idea before someone destroys their bow 😕

    what string do you recommend for using in the twist for the final bow string?

    • @Underbottom.Sandydown
      @Underbottom.Sandydown 5 лет назад +1

      Personally I use B55 to make the bow string, and any nylon thread to serve it. But there's a bunch of specific bow serving strings for that.
      P.S. If you find yourself serving all of your usb chords, you've gone too far.

      I was wondering the same thing and just asked for myself. Then I went through and slow framed the entire video until I could get a read on the logo at the bottom. It says 'Oklahoma Selfbow Society'...which probably means it's a one off for these guys and not for sale.
      I really liked the option to use bow length or to use actual string length to setup the jig. I'll have to look into incorporating that into the ones I make for people.

    Clay - does he then serve the string after he twists it to 55"?
    Why not serve it before all those twists?
    Thanks so much for this.

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 лет назад

      You'd serve the string after twisting it together. Twisting the string together makes it more round and allows you to make minor adjustments in length.

    • @aaronwright2238
      @aaronwright2238 7 лет назад

      HonestDoubter what dose serve the string mean?

    • @HonestDoubter
      @HonestDoubter 7 лет назад +1

      Aaron Wright - in the middle of the string there is a wound section that is called "serving".

    • @clayhayeshunter
      @clayhayeshunter  7 лет назад

      +HonestDoubter yes, serve the string after twisting. If you serve before twisting it's not critical but the string is going to stay twisted so you may as well serve over the already twisted string.
