The way you do this is so much more simple and practical than a lot of other methods I've seen here on RUclips. A lot of them have a bunch of measuring and counting twists and just a bunch of extra stuff that made the process seem complicated to me. This video made it clear to me. Thanks for the great content!

It’s great to be versatile because you might be in a situation where you can’t get your hands on a jig , ie if your out hunting on a trip somewhere , how ever at home a jig can make things just a bit easier to make what ever size string you want as well , I have one and I love it but Clays method is just as good and does the same thing at the end of the day. Jigs definitely have there place when needed. 👍

I've been working on a self-bow for myself, and I'm gonna be building some board-bows for my 5 and 3 yr old daughter, and not having commercially available strings for a 3 yr old with a 15" draw length has me wanting to pull my hair out, and then I figured, well, sh*t, I bet I could MAKE a string. Hi Clay. I'm about to take some Rowan to make a stave with my son to make a simple selfbow and I had been thinking forward to stringmaking so this is really timely, thanks. Obviously there's craft and learning here but at least I understand all the steps involved in terms of weaving lines for integrity under extreme tension. I had wondered how this feat was achieved and I love the simple but effective tying innovations that have evolved to solve these problems. Thanks for sharing!

So it looks like the reason for the 3 different length strands at the loop ends is to create a tapered effect while twisting back in to the main body of the string. Reminds we of working with dyneema. The taper adds strength as well as helps hold the splice

The little holes at 16:00 and following make me go insane one day... I open them, they close because of the twist. I try to keep them open with my fingers, I can't put the loose ends through. Maybe it's easier with fastflight material because it'ts stiffer than mine. I don't know. I manage to get through the process very quick and than I have to put at least twice the time for splicing the second loop. And sometimes it doesn't even end in having a functional bowstring at all... I did manage to make a string like this several times, but for every new string I start from scratch when it comes to this last part it seems. Simply frustrating. Best video about stringmaking though. I have to watch it every time because i make strings not very often. Helps with erverything and sometimes even with the splicing of the second loop. ;) Thank you very much! :)

  • @keithbaker3405
    @keithbaker3405 5 лет назад +1

Watching this reminded me of one of those previous string making vids that you done, must be over a year ago now. In that instance you, like here, laid in the top loop and spliced in the lower one..except you applied the flemish twist over the entire length. Initially copied that example but adapted it to suit me. Although applying the flemish twist through the whole length uses more material and results in a heavier string, it offers a good robust string (I have one on one of my 55# bows made with B50 for a year now). The thing I do differently to you is that I use the conventional "rope splice" loops for both ends as I found it neater and easier to get the exact length..I then serve over the spliced area, just for belt and braces approach and it's tidy. When I made that string I used to use a wire clothes hanger bent around my door handle leading across the room to a small hobby vice on my desk!

  • @Kadranos

This was a very straightforward and simple yet detailed tutorial. Thanks for posting!
BTW, that knot you showed to begin the timber hitch isn't a square knot, but an overhand knot twisted into a half hitch. Two overhand knots would make a square knot (or granny knot, depending on how you lay the second knot).
Also, what you make on the bottom end appears to be an eye splice, but I'm not 100% sure. I've made a few eye splices for sailboat lines, but that's done with three strand rope, not two, so there may be another term for what you show here.
Neither of those points of terminology detract at all from how good your demonstration is, though. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the great video. I’ve made my own strings , both Flemish twist and with a adjustable jig that I. made.
Your method surpasses mine. When stringing a bow like you did be very careful with a recurved tip that your hand does not slip
Off limb it can whip back and hit you in your eye . I’ve smacked myself before , so I’ve got in the habit of turning my head
Away and feeling the string go into your limb grooves. 👀😅

Hey Mate! Finally made my first string...can’t tell you how many times I had to go over the maths 😂 not my strong point! But, string came out spot on!! I finally realised why you only reinforce one end...cause that’s the sliding one!! Haha...I’m gettin there 😉

Excellent video sir. Very nicely done. When you finish off the serving, you can actually do the same thing you did with the serving tool still attached in lue of cutting it off, I don't think it would matter, since you will be cutting the extra off one way or another, but I do it and when you pull it tight, it is a little less waste possibly? Thanks again sir for helping us with this. Thank you
    Dale

I'm not going to question the cost of bow strings after watching this. Very good vid CH.

I am watching this because someone sent me a tik tok of someone making a micro bow out of two dental flossers, and it bothered me they used a rubber band, so now I have to do it with a proper bow string...
