You have such a soothing soft spoken voice that not only is it a pleasure to watch you work, but to listen as you instruct as well. It's like you're the Bob Ross of bowyery. I look forward to putting your instruction to use! I may not have to make a Flemish Twist string jig after all, now that I've found your video!
Hello! Yes, perfectly possible to make a good string without a jig. Of course a jig makes the taper from the loop very neat and even and if you want a double-looped string a jig definitely makes that task more straightforward. But if you are happy with a single loop, then making a string entirely in your hands is a good skill to have. Thanks for watching. Mick

You sir are a great teacher...I made a 40lb bow and Flemish twist string folowing your instruction....I lived and hunted in England for five years in Cambridgeshire...miss you guys!
My bow is 5 foot from notch to notch so 5 foot is 60 inches and you’re supposed to add 20 inches so do I set my nails I’m going to use make my strands at 80 inches?
159 French knights disliked this video. But seriously...I am finishing up a Meare Heath-style bow of hickory, and I have some Irish linen thread that I'll be using for a string. It will be my first attempt at making my own string, and I think the waxed linen will work well in the dry Wyoming climate. Love this video, Mick, and I'll definitely be checking out your others. Thank you!
I know this is an ’old’ video, but I think it needs to be said that your explanation of a quite complicated process is clear and lucid, and very easy to follow. Thank you. And I hope your back is showing some improvement! Les
i will say this for you, your video production quality, on screen mannerisms, and articulation of information is at the very top standard for a you tube vid. Key information delivered without ums and ahs or stutters, and short and sweet sentences explaining what needs to be explained without deviating, slow demos, but fast enough to not get bored and slow enough to take in what your teaching, good positioning and lighting on all angles and some well placed transitions, that personal touch at the start of the video about documenting your fumbles as a novice was humbling, and of course, the finished product comes together perfectly at the end with a clear demo of the results, awesome.
Blimey Aaron, that comment will go to my head if I'm not careful! Glad you liked this video. I guess I'm learning bow making and film making simultaneously and it's great to get feedback on the latter. As I'm sure you realise, good editing, camera work, lighting, narration etc should almost go unnoticed leaving space for the story - but it's useful for me to get feedback on that side of things. Thank you very much!
Let it go to your head my friend, its rare for me to feel compelled to write praise on not only the content, but the production quality too. I genuinely enjoyed watching and learning from you, plus you have a very kind voice which, as strange as it sounds, is very relaxing and easy to listen too. Again, you are very open and honest about your level of skill and knowledge, and its really humbling, you are clearly a good man with a good soul and its people like yourself that make me proud to be a brit. Let the head swell a bit, you deserve it ;)
Oh, I've gone all shy now Aaron :-) RUclips is a crazy place to spend some of our time. Humbling to be valued for stuff I make in the shed. Thanks again.
Mick.... You're made for T.V. I see a 12 part series on the Discovery end of the t.v. schedule where Mick explores the history of war bows around the world. Episode 1, the English war bow, the making of and using of. Next 11 episodes , Mick takes his longbows around the world, visiting bowyers who make and shoot traditional war bows from their cultures, every episode ending with them trying to shoot your war bows. It's a winner, can't fail. You get a free world tour and a wad of cash ( don't forget me lol ) and we get something decent to watch on t.v. 👍👍👍
Watched this video 4 years ago how to make bow string for my home made bows for myself and my kid. Now 4 years later it shoved up as watched when i searched how to make bowstring for my next kids first bow. Great video. ps The bowstring made 4 years ago still works ;)
Thanks Mick I really enjoy your videos , I myself am a raw beginner so watching Your explanations are so helpful and entertaining , Mick Collins novice bowman !
Thank you so much Mick, I have just been watching a few of your videos, i speak as someone who is about to take up traditional archery for 1st time ever, not to compete, but purely for enjoyment and fun, as i now have the time ( i work 4 on 4 off shift pattern) You have inspired me to go for it. It seems to me that you have a genuine "feel" for what you do, and i really like your style. Thanks for your inspiration.
Hello Allan, well I'm delighted that you are going to have a try at traditional archery! I hope that you find it rewarding. Your shift pattern may help you get some time in with a bow, especially as we see the evenings getting lighter and the weather kinder. I started just 13 months ago and am entirely self-taught - I heat learned a lot without it consuming all my time. I am delighted that I have given you some inspiration to have a try and I appreciate you telling me that you enjoy my videos. Good luck with your new interest! Atb, Mick
just had to say that was as clear and well presented a demonstration as I have ever seen. Thanks to you I now own a few self made bowstrings which shoot well and I had great fun and satisfaction in making. Keep up the good work.
Hi David - thank you for that excellent comment! I'm delighted that you feel my video is clear to understand - and it seems you've had a try and succeeded. Well done. Thanks again for commenting and of course watching. Atb, Mick
Your expertise is exceptional! We must all value the time proven art of doing things ourselves for goodness sakes. Teachers like yourself can help us less skilled bow enthusiasts and I urge beginners to pay attention to what these teachers of the old arts tell you. Thank you for your willingness to teach with no "strings" attached.
Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ruclips.net/user/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.
Mick, you are the best presenter on youtube. It was indeed a pleasure to watch this video. I hope to make my first Flemish Twist in a day or so for the prod of the crossbow I have just finished making.
Thanks Mick. I just finished my first flemish twist loop. Now that I can make one, I can teach others to as well. My shagbark hickory flat bow will have a proper string within the next couple hours. I'm not using dacron B-50. I'm using 20 lb. hemp twine. It's strong, cheap and readily available at Walmart. Cheers!
@@MickGrewcock Thanks, brother. Now that it's strung up with a proper brace height, I can see that it needs a little tillering. One step at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day.
@@williammanning3174 Go steady William. Getting the tiller right when at brace height is key to success as you bend it further. Getting to brace is a significant milestone on the way to full draw. A braced bow that looks right has every chance of being successful; continuing to bend the bow after brace height but with problems visible is asking for trouble. So, as you say, Rome wasn't built in a day.
@@MickGrewcock Steady as she goes, Captain. I'm gently scraping away with my razor sharp knife. The 20 lb. hemp twine string worked great til my razor sharp knife touched it. Then it went "BOING" and the end with the flemish loop flew halfway across the garage! As such...I'm performing the tillering with some paracord. It will get there eventually. I cut that nice shagbark hickory tree down and I want it to have a new purpose. It was just standing there, stripping the carbon atoms from CO2 molecules....exhaling O2 molecules....it would be absolutely criminal to not make something beautiful from the wood it provided.

Thanks for the video Mick, very informative. I have been a traditional bow hunter on and off up till about 10 years ago, where I strictly started traditional only. I am 50 now and wanted to take hunting to a new level. I just cut my first trees to let dry to try to make my first long bow. I have been researching everything I could to try to get the proper knowledge to take on this task. The string was my biggest concern. Your video has put my nerves at ease. Thanks again and will use all your videos for guidance.

Well.. .I did it and it works. :) Your camera work showing the process is quite good. Easy to follow. Not sure what the heck I've made it from. Got it at a craft store. It's brown and waxed. My first one was for a 30# PVC short recurve I've made. Two bundles of 4.
Hello Michael: I watch many of your presentations and I find them truly professional and easy to follow. Your presentation on making a bowstring I found to be particularly useful and I am no longer afraid to giving it a try -- so thank you and please keep up the good work. I hope that you do a follow-up on the serving. Melvyn Griffiths.
Great informative presentation! I just learned how to do something new! I will definitely use the technique! Thanks very much, Mr. Grewcock! Well done video!

Thank you
Well.. .I did it and it works. :) Your camera work showing the process is quite good. Easy to follow. Not sure what the heck I've made it from. Got it at a craft store. It's brown and waxed. My first one was for a 30# PVC short recurve I've made. Two bundles of 4.
I knew you could do it!
Thank you. I'm not able to count how often I watch this video but Yes show me how to serve the bow string.
James Nevels Thanks James! Already done - just check my channel. Thanks for watching. Mick
I'm new to longbows and I see how cool they are but I couldn't find a bow string, but like always I Will learn. Thanks for teaching.
THANKS SO MUCH FINALLY SOMEONE CAN TELL ME HOW TO TIE THE BOWYER"S KNOT PROPERLY
A great demonstration Mick. Thank you.
Your voice reminds me of the narrators on those Nat Geo nature documentaries. Soo soothing.
Thank you 🙏
Great informative presentation! I just learned how to do something new! I will definitely use the technique! Thanks very much, Mr. Grewcock! Well done video!
After accidentally cutting my string in half the night before a Field shoot this was very useful.😁
Very well explained. Thank you for sharing
very clear...you made it look so easy I may just try it...thanks
Go for it Mike, it's a doddle really. You don't need a jig, just fingers that do as they're told! Thanks for watching, Mick
Wonderful knowledge! Thank you! The bowstring on my father's awesome wooden bow has just snapped so this is most excellent because I feel rather confident this tutorial will help immensely!
Good luck!
Thought I would try doing this with a cordless drill to speed up twisting and it worked.😉👍
Great demonstration and thank you for sharing. Will definitively try that.
Thank you Francois! Good luck. MIck
