- We drop directly into our story with the crew of the Far Trader The Kate's Gambit in the midst of a job on the world of Garda-Vilis in the Spinward Marches. When they attract some unwanted attention, however, they'll have to improvise a new plan to finish the job and get away.

Voyagers of the Jump is an original adventure using the 2022 2E Update to the Traveller RPG rules set by Mongoose Publishing.
First published in 1977, Traveller is a science fiction RPG in the vein of The Expanse or Battlestar Galactica. Most who played the original game back in the day remember the robust character creation system where if you push too far and get unlucky with the dice, you can die before you even start playing.

Came for the Seth staying for the crew
Philo: "I'm hurt real bad."
Artemis: "Oh no! You know what that means?!"
Philo (and Me here at home): "What?"
Artemis: "IT MEANS YOU STILL HAVE TO FLY THE SHIP SO GET IN THE SHIP LET'S GO."
Me: 😆🤣👏😆👏
When Artemis said that, Sydney became my favorite player!
"Kate's Gambit" where nobody knows who "Kate" is 🤣. Classic, classic Traveller!
Its Cait's.
Forbidden Planet! This is why we need Skid Maher. Noiiice.
Gauss (rhymes with house) weapons use magnetic acceleration to propel solid ammunition. Think Skid maybe thinking of Tesla with the lightning?
Yeah, Gauss is like a miniature railgun, right? Using magnets to propel ammunition at stupid high speeds?
@@Avankiriit’s related to railguns but uses a different arrangement of magnets, technically. Though in fiction the terms get a bit loose, of course.
I presume Skid got it mixed up with degaussing, which is a different thing but involves electricity afaik.
Great beginning! A bunch of galactic nomads, down on their luck, pull together to get a spaceship. Alicia as chaotic commune commander, Skid as unfairly discharged naval officer, Seth as a one term ensign turned thief and fixer and Sidney a spy who after being injured turned rogue.
"I did not die, otherwise I would have."
-Skid
Great start. I'm loving the humor on this one. Seth is an excellent add to the GCN.
He's such a good get.
Let's remember that before Police Squad, Leslie Neilson WAS a serious actor. That's what made him great in that role was that he was like the last person you'd expect to be funny. Bolstered by the fact that he didn't find the humour funny, which helped his straight man delivery.
I'm so glad that the stars aligned and Nielsen found a career in the comedy scene.
Nooooo! I was LOVING the codes! 🤣🤣🤣 “The badger is in the playpen” pure gold! Hahaha
If anyone needs it: game starts at 19:45
👍 👍 👍
Thanks, I hate all the mumbo jumbo
Somebody remembers Space: Above & Beyond! I was so mad when it was cancelled. It left the story unresolved. Each episode was a reenactment of Pacific theater WWII battles.
So excited for this series. Seth brought me here and I'm definitely going to sample some other series.
Same here, I first found them when he did the 2-shot Strange Encounters a few months back and i've really loved nearly all of their content i've tried. They have a good amount of varied free stuff on youtube, New Game Who Dis is a great series. Their patreon has a ton of podcast content too if you decide to join.
The Seth army! 💪
Yes, great fun...I played a little Traveller back in the 80s and think I will have another go taking a break from D&D/Pathfinder...
@@andreasmorin2633 My 5e group is taking a break from Storm Kings Thunder. I have convinced them to try out Traveller. The thing that grabbed there attention was the fact that you can die during character creation.
I'm convinced Skid's character was reading Kierkegaard in the original Danish, a long-dead language in this setting. Because he's cool like that.
Danish may not be dead, the Sword Worlds are a thing.
@@Alric66 Good point!
@@Alric66 Yup. They call it Sagamal.
I've owned Traveler rules since they were originally published but I've never actually played an adventure... the character generation is always so interesting that by the time I'm done my characters are either dead or 90 years old. Glad to see you all made it past that hurdle, enjoying the adventure so far. Keep 'em coming!
I owned the LBB set in '78 but my fellow gamers just couldn't wrap their heads around a game with no "Experience Points." It was three decades before I got a chance to play or even GM. (It's an excellent system for PBEM games too!) I've been hooked ever since.
I had everyone of those little pamphlets! I'd make characters all the time but we only played maybe 3 times.
One of the features that I love about Traveller is emergent story telling. This show really demonstrates how it works and how it is an incredibly fun way to play.
😆 🤣 😂 someone typed "emergent storytelling" without being sarcastic
I love how me and Seth have the same curse. We love our roleplay, rules, and characters.. But the dice always fail us.
Thank you Seth for mentioning the Expanse. Best sci-fi in a long, long time. I also grew up with Tom (through High School) so he was the reason I gave the Expanse a try. Worf smashing the lute is an homage to "Animal House."
Skids character reading Kierkegaard for fun is tickling some weird connective tissue between my various forms of nerd. Ahh! Ugh loving this. Thank you, Matthew!!!
So, so true. I loved when he started talking about Basque on Get in the Trunk, too.
Oh you've been bit, you know what that means...you still DRIVE the ship! I lost it on that line great job sydney.
loving this series cant wait to see how it goes!
Same!
Yo, I have JUST realized that Seth's tshirt is the awesome cover art of Lord Weird Slough Feg's amazing album called "Traveller". It's one of the best records of the entire USPM genre and would highly recommend it for traditional heavy metal fans
Good catch!
I've been looking forward to this all week. 😁
Skid's reaction to GG being hit by a bus...buahahhahaa, *chef's kiss*
A positive comment for the RUclips algorithm!
A positive reply for the same reason.
That’s awesome
I'm thinking of bringing the Pushed Skill Roll mechanic from Call of Cthulhu into Traveller 'cuz it always makes our incessant die failures so darned interesting.
Yes Roy Scheider was the dad in Thomas Jane’s Punisher movie. Who can forget his classic line- Your’e going to need a bigger gun!
Everyone had something to do and a chance to shine. The adventure was really well run.
Seth's char - I had one similar. He rolled a bad event and went to prison. Did 5 terms before he got paroled. His best skill was Persuasion 4.
I love the scene in Leviathan Wakes where Miller is waking through Eros reloading loose cartridges into his magazine. That for whatever reason has stuck with me. I love Miller in the Expanse especially later events no spoil.
They even had the "how do we pronounce 'gauss'" discussion that is more standard to wide ranging sci-fi games than the tropes discussed in the preamble. Glad I found time to catch up with this.
Philo is great on a bug hunt, but 'Oh my Gawd! Worst criminal ever!'
I don't think I'd thought about Space Above and Beyond in 20 years.
Fun fact: Michael Dorn starred in the early aught RTS game Emperor: Battle for Dune, which was basically C&C with a Dune skin. Classic game, made by Westwood Studios.
That game takes me back!
The Miller arc in The Expanse is my all time favourite sci fi story. In both the book and the series the ending is really powerful. You gave me goosebumps just talking about it.
Blade Runner (original theater cut) was so amazing. It influence my gaming so much! Dune (1984) was also very important to me. Lastly Star Trek (TOS) S1E3 “Where no man has gone before”
A lot of people hate on Dune 1984. It's odd and flawed, but it does things for me as well I'll always love it.
Dune (1984) is great. 20 times better than the po-faced half-baked 2022 version.
Love the cast. Love the crew. Love the story. Love the game. Matthew has taken on the cliffhanger style of another famous GM, but has more allowances for player improv. MORE! Will be following this story!
So the story Skid told about Forbidden Planet made me remember, and get thankful, for what that movie did for analog synthesis in music. Threw the rulebook out so hard that there's a whole technique for making generative ambience called a Krell patch, off the aliens from the movie. We're not even sure we're doing it the way the original crew did, either.
So glad to see a new sci-fi series by GCP. A stand out sci-fi episode for me was the one with the transporter sniper rifle on DS9. It was so intense and jarring compared to other episodes. It added gravitas to the story telling and hooked me on the series.
this team should do a spin off podcast where they talk sci-fi 🏆
Have you listened to Skid’s podcast, Franchise Fan Guys? It’s not limited to sci-fi, but it might scratch that itch for you. It’s good stuff.
Space Above and Beyond was awesome. As a Marine it holds up. The A C Crispins' Han Solo trilogy was an all time favorite!
Have you ever read Robert Heinleins' Starship Troopers. It's quite amazing.
Yes, I loved it! Read it a few times over the years. @@timd4524
I play Traveller in a weekly game and its interesting to see how other people play.
When I was younger the tv station A&E had a stand up comedy show called evening at the improv. And I remember watching it and Michael Dorn did a stand up set. And it was hilarious. It was after during his time on Next Gen. And it was gold
Jefferson Starship is definitely future classical. 😅
The Han Solo books were written by Brian Daley. He also wrote The Adventures of Hobart Floyt and Alacrity Fitzhugh which could pretty easily take place in a Traveller setting.
41:00 mins in and I'm laughing so hard as we lose the pilot(1) skill. So familiarly chaotic, just what one of my groups would do...
Space Above and Beyond, YES!, great choice Matthew.
The Return to the Forbidden Planet is a great musical, at least when performed by professionals.
It’s the story of the film, but with explicit Shakespeare misquotes and rock and roll songs.
I'm really enjoying this.
Fart Raider is also a great name for a ship!
*We built this city...We built this city on bad dice rolls*
Love this crew!
That episode on Space Above and Beyond was great! There were some memorable episodes on Babylon 5 too, but I can’t remember which ones.
That opening track though. Beautiful. 🎶
Loving the show folks! Can't wait for the next one. 👍❤️
Great start with a fun crew.....
Love love love Seth! didnt know him before the network presented him to me AND IM DIGGIN IT
My fav memory of Space above and Beyond is the 1v1 fighter duel when the lone officer goes hunting the elite/advanced alien fighter that had killed some pilots in his squad. - epic space warfare drama. Fav scifi series in general though is Babylon 5.
Space: Above and Beyond was a hidden gem, so many great moments.
All I remember of Space Above and Beyond is that there was something else in the same time slot I preferred. And driving me nuts that I can't remember what.
There's a stage play 'Return to the Forbidden Planet'. All the speech is Shakespearian and full of classic rock songs.
"Everybody roll recon"
"Why?"
"No reason"
😂🤣😂
Great stuff ! Looking forward to the shenanigans
Yoooo ep 2. Pumped
Well-paced story with good character role-playing. Plus a cliff-hanger ending! 👏👍✌
The Shriekers of 567-908 (Spinward Marches 1031) are a sentient species whose rationality was hard to discover since they communicated in high frequency shrieks (hence the name) and gestures. Their eggs were actually sold for jewels, so something like Alicia Marie's cancelling situation has happened canonically in the Traveller universe. The Ael Yael of Jaeyelya (Gushemege 0437) had a similar experience, which left them as a race totally opposed to megacorporations.
Third Imperium sucks, though.
One darned thing after another. I'm guessing they need to be captured by the Navy to get into their adventure. Unless of course there's a miraculous escape and they stumble into it.
Thank you Matthew and All !
I really enjoyed, lots of fun, entertaining and hilarious.
I love Thomas Jane, such an excellent actor. Detective Miller was my top favorite character on the Expanse. Other's shared 2nd place. Skid i love Forbidden Planet, one of my top favorite sci-fi movies. I do enjoy Space Above and Beyond to.
Skid should read the Legend of the Galactic Heroes books
For those who are curious, Michael Dorn has made 283 appearances as Worf since 1987
Good to know.
Really loving this campaign 👏
Man Space Above and Beyond was great!
Enjoying this thank you
To Serve Man is based on a great little story by Damon Knight, the story has the same title. Well worth looking up.
OMG - Love the Star Wars quotes 🤣 Excellent show all - Super fun - Ty ty 🥰
Wow great show, loving it so far.
Glad you enjoy it!
I could be wrong but I think colm meany, miles O'Brien, appears in the most episodes of star trek. He was in tng from the beginning and then he joined ds9 before worf I believe.
After looking it up I am incorrect dorn is in 60 episodes more than meaney. But upon looking it up majel Barrett-rodenberry has a line or appearance in almost every episode from TOS through 08 when she died including voicing all the lines of the computer in TNG and TOS also 2 episodes of Enterprise, and played trois mother and multiple on screen roles in TNG, including the first officer in the TOS pilot. In total she is credited for 309 episodes of star trek
Stars. They were full of stars.
I heard about Alicia Marie from episode 1 of this, wanted to see what else she does.
Well, I think it's astounding she is professionally gorgeous (fitness model) and still gets into nerdy shit. What a lass.
GCN is my new fave channel, sorry seth, you brought me here with intimate encounters (lol) but this is my new home.
Welcome home!
Space Above & Beyond was such an underrated show for its time. Still salty about the way they ended it after getting cancelled.
absolutely!
the ambience is still unmatched, doing much with little. maybe I give it a re-watch to see if it still gets me.
Space: Above and Beyond was awesome and you should finish the abruptly ended series with a RPG… like Traveller
im so mad at myself!! i set an alarm to watch the stream and everything! ok, NEXT week!
God damn this is so good,
Hell yeah Forbidden Planet!
GDW should be proud of this episode. awesome vibes from L.A.
At least they have one space cadet on a space themed show.
1) Really enjoy you guys. 2) There is a company, ArcFlash Labs, that is producing a commercially available Gauss pistol and rifle. The future is now!
Gang have secret handshakes. Canon.
Fans of Forbidden Planet (and Alien), try Planet of the Vampires (Italy 1965). It’s creepy cheesy and fun, with fashionable black leather space suits. If the plot seems similar to Alien, that’s because a little over a decade later Dan O’Bannon cribbed some elements of the plot for his screenplay. One of my favorite oldies.
Love this one
Thanks!
I agree the expanded universe was amazing. Read every book from heir to the empire on. Same with the star trek crossover books. I read a lot well still do. I love the aliens franchise books. In fact Aliens verse predator rift war came out last week on audio book. Its really good.
If your on a Ship, you would use Electronics(sensors) skill, on land to spot Recon (INT).
Peter F. Hamilton's novel, Fallen Dragon was my favorite scifi story. It's got a growing up story, romance, betrayal, an alien, a heckuva twist, just really superbly written and the only downside is that is begins a tad slow. Second place for me John Steakley's novel, Armor, which I really really love conceptually, but action isn't his strong suit.
AC Crispin's trilogy of Han Solo books are so great!
I would be happy with a GCP podcast just about Worf.
I honestly thought I was the only one who read the Solo trilogy.
Long live the classic Expanded Universe! ❤
Don't forget about Michael in undiscovered country as the lawyer what whatever in the Klingon trial.
Space Above and Beyond holds up. The latter episodes sort of dispel the jingoism.
To an 'Old Traveller Grognard' when someone mentions Garda-Vilis I remember BROADSWORD calling 'Danny Boy'
“Where Eagles Dare,” right? 😀
Classic Adventure 7 BROADSWORD took place on Garda Vilis so we named our Traveller Team call sign 'Danny Boy' in homage to that film
@@howardkingston7901 Love it. I can still hear Richard Burton saying that into the radio. What a great voice he had. One of my favorite films too.
Seth has the same LWSF T-shirt as me! :P
To Serve Man is absolutely Twilight Zone, jeez, let the lady talk.
Space Above and Beyond: Sugar Dirt is the episode. And yes I watched it when I was about 16 years old.
Seths got some splanin to do, its time for nerdige! 1:44:44
So are they playing the 4th edition, the 2022 core update edition? I have a hard time navigating the different traveller versions....
Fave scifi, Book called "A deepness in the sky" by Vernor Vinge. Ive read and watched A LOT of sience fiction. This blew my mind and i love it with all my heart. HIGHLY recomended.
Right there with you, Harry! I love that book.
nope, Worf was the second most, O`Brian was in more.
