One minor rules note: Character get all the service skills at 0 in their first term (after school) automatically as "Basic Training". See page 16. "For your first career only, you get all the skills listed in the Service Skills table at Level 0 as your basic training. For any subsequent careers (i.e. changing from Agent to Rogue), you may pick any one skill listed in the Service Skills table at Level 0 as your basic training. Citizens and Drifters are an exception to this. They both use their appropriate assignment skill table for basic training." Looking forward to ep.2!
If I recall correctly, everyone in their first term of their first profession gets 0 in every skill on the Service Skill table. It's the one way to guarantee that you get, say, Pilot skill if you want.
The life path character creation is so great. It provides that 6 page back story that nobody ever reads but with this everyone gets it and is invested.
I rolled a Classic Traveller PC hot streak once, forgot about the age limit and wound up with a very rich and high social 90 something year old Admiral whose physical and mental stats were still fairly OK.
I'm feeling strong nostalgia for army grunts dying in droves before mustering out, High Guard admirals with insane piloting skills and designing starship deck plans I'll never use!
You forgot background skills, everyone should have gotten their education modifier+3 number of skills from the table on page 8 too. And everyone should have gotten all their service skills at level 0 for their first career.
@@kittykabootsin833 It is not that easy as Traveller does not use skill points as such. You have to do character creation in proper order because of certain rules in Traveller.
Man this was entertaining! I know that at some point they have to play the actual game but I could probably listen to a 2nd full episode of character creation. It's not overly crunchy, just fun to listen to.
I am amazed how quickly the team are able to adjust and create a back story for their rolls. Alicia seems to be especially quick! Thanks for the fun vid!😀
Okay, so, for some reason I woke up and this is what the Algorithm offered me. I took it, and I do not regret anything. God damn it, I cannot wait for more!this has very quickly taken over my mind. How have I not heard of this game before?! 🤔
I’ve been gaming since 84 and always heard about Traveller but never by anyone with direct knowledge. Really looks amazing. I consumed Seth’s channel as well.
I don’t know if this was an intentional nod to Star Trek, but I got a chuckle when Sydney sent her character Titania off to study astrogation and engineering at a university that was the space equivalent of the University of Edinburgh.
I totally love Traveller - A perfect system and lots of fun 🥰 The character creation tables alone are a blast 🥰 OMG I love how the forgotten Life Event roll only CONFIRMED the original university story - LOL 🤣
Character creation and figuring out how they know each other are almost the best part of the game. But, I wonder: Will Titania have Skid's lawyer file a restraining order against her ex, or will she have One-Eyed Lucille just mess him up?
I've been trying to learn as much about playing Traveller as possible lately, but I keep watching videos like this and it seems everyone gets stuff wrong. I think when people get promoted in their career, they get another skill roll. I didn't see that here at all. Also some other people mentioned issues below with the "basic training". I really like the idea of Traveller as a game system, especially the lack of levels and HP's...the skill based system and the idea that you get worse and worse in combat as you take damage, just makes so much sense to me, but you might need to fix those characters...
I want to play that 1977 version again! I wanna roll some 6-sided die and get a multinomial character profile and possibly muster out with a scout ship!
Levi Blaze is the lead guitarist and backup vocals for the band Swuladillo. Pug of course is the bass player and lead singer. They are on tour using Kate's Gambit as a tour bus.
Love the energy Alicia brings, has great chemistry with the regulars hope to keep seeing her do stuff for the GCN. This game sounds AWESOME. Really want to play it.
Very underskilled group considering not only missing the basic training rule but also the extra skill roll you get for each successful advancement check.
A lot of this is down to Mongoose's attrocious layout issues in all of their publications. Even the flowchart provided for Character creation is deeply flawed; missing several important steps.
Listened to the pod first, later popped over here just because. Gotta say, Grant (I assume) adds a lot with the visuals. Nice to see the tables from which you're rolling. And the misc graphic here and there. Good job!
The last movie I saw before the Pandemic was "1917". And I have to wonder if it was a sign of things to come. I have played Traveller since 1979 and still have all the rule, supplement, and adventures books. Even got Marc Millers autograph on Book 1. Regarding the address of US Navy ships, it is not simply the name of the ship, but you also have to include the FPO: all mail to service personnel serving aboard ships are collected at the regional Fleet Post Offices (FPO) located in all military bases around the world. Mail addressed to a specific ship not in port are sent to that ship via resupply ships (sometimes by helicopter or planes).
The connections should be done Last, for reasons of Time. IF it's both character's first term and they say "X is our connection", but the one starts Adventuring after that, meanwhile the other one continues in careers to age 40+, how do you reconcile the time shift? You really can't.
OK ... Alicia is amazing. I love her more and more, and her detailed backstory, as I am watching this. Really, I am loving every one of the players and the Referee. Really looking forward to following this campaign.
For college, you should roll a life event prior to graduation roll. Some times the life event helps come up with a back story if you fail to graduate. OK, you caught it. Good deal!
I haven't seen many ngwd or other shows on the network, no patreon, but Matthews gotten really good at making the opening banter environment (obviously everyone else did their part but the GM facilitates)
Spoiler- now that I know Alicia didn’t come back for episodes 2 and 3, I hope it wasn’t because she took it personally how much bad stuff happened to her character. Hopefully it was just something came up and she couldn’t make it, because she was so entertaining in this and to think what her character would have contributed to the adventure!
Skid's joy is so catching :) and Traveller is one hell of a game, I'm glad y'all are digging into it. Alicia is the star of the show though, way to roll with those terrible rolls!
Skid - I knew I had met a kindred gaming spirit when I got a chance to chat with you after the recent Philly show and learned we had started gaming about the time (in the late 70s). Now that I know you're also a Traveller fan, I'm all the more impressed at how you've achieve what my buddies and I dreamed of: how to become a professional roleplayer! :D
If you make a successful advancement roll, then you move to the next rank and gain an extra roll on any of the Skills and Training Tables for this career.
They should have done Traveller 2300 AD - although a heavier juggle but it would have tied to the Twilight 2000 game. 2300 is based on the same Twilight events, uses the main Traveller rules but the tech and everything is closer to today.
Awesome!! We hope you enjoy Traveller as much as we have! If you didn't know, this initial run inspired us to start a whole new Traveller series that ran this year called Voyagers of the Jump: ruclips.net/video/_5ESEkFoOdE/видео.html
PSA.. Skip the first 13 minutes. It's necessary to a group gaining over the internet but it's just rapport building between the players. May be more like skipping 19 minutes before they start on Lore.
Growing up, the split was between those that were partisan to Dungeons and Dragons and Traveller. The smart kids went for Traveller. This is the greatest RPG ever. I love how realistic is is. I have always thought that Psionics was a 'sop' to fantasy/Star Wars and it felt to me like a cheapening. What did you all think about psionics in the game?

When Alicia says "law enforcement" it sounds like "lore enforcement" to me and all I can think is: that sounds like a career for Skid.
She was really channeling Fran drescher in this episode
@@tomkelly00 Yes, with 'law' and with 'officer' she weirdly has a NYC accent.
If I recall correctly, everyone in their first term of their first profession gets 0 in every skill on the Service Skill table. It's the one way to guarantee that you get, say, Pilot skill if you want.
Well Skill Packages also.
You can tell Alica is from the U.S. She was excited by the prospect of having 50% of her medical costs covered...
The life path character creation is so great. It provides that 6 page back story that nobody ever reads but with this everyone gets it and is invested.
I like it for Twilight 2000 and Dark Conspiracy, too.

Matty Caps, I'm proud of you. The once timid newbie Gormlaith to the silky smooth knowledgeable game host. Well done, Keep it up
Is there a link to Vicki’s presentation? Somewhere?
Well damn, that was some fun character creation!
Should be fun! I've been running 2e Mongoose Traveller for about 6 months now.
Mongoose Traveller sounds like a completely different, and awesome, game! :D

Alicia appears to have a cloaking device on her chair but it's on the fritz which is a very Traveller thing. Alien tech that doesn't work properly.
Ancient tech works just fine…if you’re a Droyne, :)

This is the best Alicia has been on the network
Haven't had this much fun with a Mattie Caps drop since The City, in the City, in the City, in the City, in the City. Give a take a few cities.
