When the ship was created, the OS was Jelly Bean. And it ran fine. Unfortunately they were forced to update the OS without option to refuse… and now everything happens super slowly with a cosmic ‘beach ball’ for decades, which is why they’ve been gone 74 years and think it’s only 3 months.

I like to think due to bureaucracy, the painfully slow process of militaries adopting new technology standards, and backwards compatibility with lower-tech worlds; all spaceships are required to have a paper tape reader. Something akin to punched tape or magnetic tape readers of early computers. Colloquially referred to as "fruit roll-ups"; though the meaning of the word is lost to time.
and the Admiral Adama-Battlestar Galactica 2.0 protocol - insisting on staying closer to analog so we're less prey and have backup systems ready to go.
I've just recently come across Traveller as a game system, and I really enjoy it in concept, and it was thanks to Seth I even came across it. So, to be here and watching/listening to the actual gameplay is fantastic, especially with Seth in it. I'm really enjoying the story Matthew is putting together, and I stayed up well past my usual bedtime because I was so wrapped up in the story. I also really like the Characters and the people playing them. if I don't finish this series over the next couple nights, I'll definitely finish it on my next day off.
I can understand the kate's computers getting affected by the timey-wimey stuff going on (it likely cross-referenced against the ghost ship and priotises that thing's data as its a naval vessel), but I don't understand how the physically printed media (speaker's books, the j-drive manufacturing date) could be affected? I suspect there's something else in addition to timey-wimey stuff going on; possibly psionics? (they are on the fringes of imperial space in the spinward marches, the zhodani are practically next door) edit = spelling
The "ship specs r way better now" is a good argument. I had a pc with less than a gig of ram back in a day. Now ive got 16G. I can run giant games demanding lots of resources my old pc couldn't. And it takes up the same space. Its literally future tech

I love Gigi's idea of using Steward skills to glean info! That skillset involves both attending to and managing multiple races and personality types in a limited space and making everyone as comfortable as reasonally possible. A good Steward could arguably be used like Streetwise but shipboard...

Skid I wonder if we knew the same people at USC. I went to college there in the 90’s. Right when Matthew mentioned the guy painting his wall I was like my buddy Chris did that with poster board and then you told the story. I think he did Arizona though. I kept telling you should change the address because it was an apartment. I kept wondering if everyone with fake ID’s went to the same bar in Pueblo how it go down. On a Traveller note this stream solidified my need to purchase the updated rules. Great series so far.

Fake ID stories too - love it :D Though I is old - and growing up I had a full beard - a rarity in late 80s/early 90s and a serious demeanor -- and i was bloody good at looking over-worked & underpaid -- used to grab 12 pks on weekends and was never once carded - go figure. Now-a-days while 50 is a fast fading memory - getting carded tickles me to no end!
Really enjoyable. This and "Time for Chaos" go to the top of the queue when they appear. Does Traveller have anything like a Psychology or Insight role to get a read on an NPC? Some of that's ship's crew are setting off warning bells for me.
That would probably be the Recon skill, probably rolled with Social Standing or Education. The skills are pretty broad in application depending on which characteristic you use with it, despite how many skills there are (like Gun Combat can be used for both firing guns and repairing them, with just a change in characteristic).

I never had a fake ID. But when I graduated high school back in 01. I moved from a small town to a big city to goto school. And the college didn't have dorms but they went through another company to rent out apartments, and they would cram 4 people I. A 2 bedroom 2 bathroom. And one of my roommates made fake IDs. And one of the other roommates bought one off of him. And he would scan your current ID and just change the birthday. We'll the one roommate who had one went to get gas and had to use a check(I was with him when this happened). And he forgot his real ID but had that one went to use it. And they were buying it until he said "it's a fake ID but only difference was the birthday." And next thing you know he is explaining it to the cops

I picture Puffer as more of a Warrant Officer. I know they don't exist mechanics-wise in Traveller but it just seems to suit his character.

I expected the unassuming intelligence woman in last episode to have some abilities like that.
My guess is the Navy switched all the dates and the book knowing that the crew would jump back in time.
My guess is they jumped into a section of space that is temporal quicksand. A natural phenomenon or a side effect of the Ellisons ‘new’ jump drives.

And the college didn't have dorms but they went through another company to rent out apartments, and they would cram 4 people I. A 2 bedroom 2 bathroom. And one of my roommates made fake IDs. And one of the other roommates bought one off of him. And he would scan your current ID and just change the birthday. We'll the one roommate who had one went to get gas and had to use a check(I was with him when this happened). And he forgot his real ID but had that one went to use it. And they were buying it until he said "it's a fake ID but only difference was the birthday." And next thing you know he is explaining it to the cops
