I feel like people have really looked at two characters who, when you recall the texts, were quite blatantly depicted as anti-muggle fascists, but then they decided to just brush that off like it’s nothing 😢 Like how can you love muggleborn characters like Lily Evans but then glorify two characters who joined the same fascist army that set out to murder them?

i think the sirius characterisation changed a little more than u said -- i feel like in the older fandom he was usually headcannoned as bi, flirty, and dating a lot of people (mostly girls) at school while remus was more reserved and usually gay, but in the atyd and post-atyd era it's almost reversed and sirius is headcannoned as gay and very effeminate with remus being bi and more desirable in the new era. loving this deep dive :)
this video was so entertaining! only thing i disagree with is peter’s characterization, i like when he is given a personality and is shown to be close to the other marauders. it makes the betrayal hit so much harder when you consider lily and james trusted him with their lives. but obviously peter afterwards sucks and we all hate him

I've been writing Marauders fanfiction since 2012...and I'm SO happy to see that we've become more inclusive as a fandom, despite the hatred and bigotry of its creator. Sure, I feel proud that I've been in this fandom for so long, but I don't begrudge new people so long as they don't begrudge me my outdated terminology (our All the Young Dudes was a series called Shoebox!) and I love seeing the amount of fics increase because for a few years they did start to dwindle... I've even started to come around to this James x Regulus hype that I keep seeing online lol! Any other 'oldies' can take it up with me if they have a problem with new fans wanting to spread positivity and kindness by making the characters more diverse and representative of real life. Diverse is how they SHOULD have been, and not just through a token character with racist markers (Cho Chang, anyone?) or stereotypes tacked onto them (*cough*werewolvesasametaphorforhomosexuality*cough)

I remember being 13 and on Tumblr in 2018 and reading ATYD because one of my mutuals had recommended it to me. I read it in a weekend and then somehow managed to forget about it until it got popular again in 2020/2021. Wild times. I really love how much subcreation exists within the fandom, its truly fascinating to me. At this point most of it has gone beyond anything resembling canon (not a bad thing) but there is a sort of communally agreed upon fanmade canon that exists and changes over the years. You don't see that to this degree in a lot of fandom spaces.
this was a great video, but as someone who did lots of hp rp on tumblr back in 2015-2018 the lack of acknowledgement of frank longbottom and alice is making me break into pieces (i didn't really read too much marauder fanfic, i was more into the next gen fanon lol). they were always included in like RP lists along with dorcus, regulus, marlene, etc as side characters that you could just do whatever you wanted with bc there was literally no canon restraints.
i've mentioned Alice Longbottom\Fortescue a bit in my other video essays cause she pops up more in the fandom :)) so don't worry I didn't forget them. I've never been into roleplay and I didn't even think of looking into that side of the fandom for this research oops so it's interesting to hear that perspective !

Marlene McKinnon I know died (is she the one who was killed by Voldemort personally or was that Dorcas Meadows?) I know one was thought to be killed by him personally

Ive been in and out of the harry potter fandom for quite a long time now and somehow never managed to get into the marauders, just read ‘all the young dudes’ thanks to this video and i cant lie its one of the best decisions ive made. Its incredible how it really brings me back to reading harry potter for the first time!
i love how unbiased this video is bc every time i watch one of these its always someone who seems like so ehhh towards the newer fandom (theres nothing wrong with the old fandom and enjoying, there's always just a connotation in these things of like "the old days when jily was the main thing and now its all queers and sirius was super macho man masc") or like ignoring all nuance of characters who were villians and cinnamonrolling them and just a very fetishy outlook on both mlm ships and womens relations to that and it is so refreshing hearing someone speak about it so eloquently. 💗
Don't know if anybody said that already, but anyway... Roxanne actually is a character from a very famous russian fanfic (actually the author is Ukrainian, but the fanfic is written in Russian language). The name is "Дни мародеров", or "Marauder's days". it was really popular in the Russian side of the fandom and I was a fan myself lol. I came back to the fanfic in 2018 or 2019 and was hugely disappointed by the amount of misoginy and terrible plot choices in the fic. A few examples: James gets mad at LIly when he finds out that she is not a virgin, Sirius is a massive f*ck boy, who believes that he can sleep with everyone, but gets extremely jealous towards Roxanne, Remus falls in love with his teacher 🤡she is a woman in her 30s Not to mention, that obviously, all the characters are straight, except for two briefly mentioned death eaters. I guess, the author of this fic was really following JK footsteps. Yes I was a fan of this too, but I was so young and stupid. Can't express how happy I am that I've discovered ATYD and the modern fandom 💗 Also Viria and the author of the fic were kinda friends? I guess... that's why Viria was drawing Sirius and Roxanne so much. I even remember watching their joined stream.

As a marauders fan since the end of 2020, I loved the video so much!🥰 Your Lily cosplay is 🤌 I'm a huge slytherin skittles enthusiast so I'm gonna yap sum about the characters. Barty's fancanon is a bad boy, loud, prankster/joker, menace to society, tattooed, smoker, drug user, with soft side(bbg) + he's good at school and gets good grades(why he was such a good teacher). Barty is sometimes fancanoned as Ravenclaw because of his intelligence. Barty is often shipped with either Evan(Rosekiller) or Regulus. Yes, he killed and tortured people in canonically but he's often fancanoned to do such things in revenge of someone killing Evan Rosier. People usually like the version of Barty that didn't kill/torture anyone(I AM THE PEOPLE). Bartys other fancasts I have seen are young Skeet Ulrich. Evan is often seen to having similar personality type as Barty but more as calmer and quieter version. Evan is often fancanoned as black person with blonde hair and as Pandoras' sister. Evans fancast changes a lot but I have also seen Hugh Laughton-Scott or Dominic Fike(poc) as his fancasts. Pandora is usually fancanoned as Regulus best friend and having a similar personality as Luna: sweet, kind, reserved, etc. Pandora as I mentioned is mostly fancanoned to be Evans brother. Pandoras other fancasts change too but I have seen her the most as Amandla Stenberg(LOVE HER). Pandora is often shipped with Dorcas or Lily. I don't know much about Dorcas so I can't say anything😭 That was a lot of text but thank you so much for the video!! Keep it up and I love your cosplays😭💕

I've been in the fandom for a month or so now mostly through tiktok (though I'm old enough to remember seeing mutuals on tumblr in early 2010s having their fun) and I was just asking on reddit subs about what the fandom was like back in the day and what's shifted etc. this was such a nice overview esp with the characterization changes a la ATYD and things like Blackinnon vs Wolfstar popularity, with some of the older big fics name dropped. I haven't seen anyone talk about the fanart either - what great finds! I'm not at the end of the video yet but I just HAD to comment at the dorian regulus mention because ME TOOOOOOO me too!!!!!! and even rafa as james is so so spot on as well. (I haven't seen many people talk about cosplayers, maybe bc older fans aren't in the same spaces like tiktok etc, but that's such a fun side of this fandom to explore) thanks for what's already been a great video and I'm headed back to finish ❤
YOU TALKED ABOUT COSPLAY OOOOOOOO not me having just finished the entire dandy lyon club catalogue last night and not knowing what to even do with myself anymore......and the mischief productions oh my GODDD I absolutely agree about level of production, I feel like in all the fandoms I've ever been in through all the cosplayers that have graced us with their depictions and friend groups I Really Really truly have not seen it done like them. cannot believe we get to exist in the same timeline as A Night's Tale and The Ascendent and everything else they touch. I have a fun little goal where I save up some weekly coffees to donate every time they upload something new to get them on their way :") really seriously the cosplay in this fandom is what ultimately drew me in and the fact it's so prolific makes sense when there's no canon to depict them off of! maybe the best fancasts are the ones where the fans themselves are cast!!!!!

When I talk about early fandom I talk about before 2010... I started 2002/2003, I think. There weren't any girls but sometimes Lilly or OCs because we didn't even have NAMES. I hated JKR paired up Tonks with Remus not only because of Wolfstar but also because Tonks was one of the very few WORKING, independent women in the HP-Universe. She totally changed with the Remus-lovestory-plot. It's strange to read my own early Moonstar fanfics. A lot of "facts" today are from the films (Remus' scars) or just were published later (therefore my Sirius is not smaller than Remus, they are almost the same size in my head). Tbh, I stopped caring about JKs opinion whe she started to put things on pottermore contradicting her own canon. I really was dissappointed when we all learned about her extreme hateful views on trans people, but I didn't care for her opinion for YEARS, so... I had a longer pause with fanfictions and was really pleased with the fandom's development in the 2010s. Enjoy a lot of new content but I will never be a special friend of Jegulus, sorry (although I read a few good fics with it) 🥴

Ive been in and out of the harry potter fandom for quite a long time now and somehow never managed to get into the marauders, just read ‘all the young dudes’ thanks to this video and i cant lie its one of the best decisions ive made. Its incredible how it really brings me back to reading harry potter for the first time!
i love how unbiased this video is bc every time i watch one of these its always someone who seems like so ehhh towards the newer fandom (theres nothing wrong with the old fandom and enjoying, there's always just a connotation in these things of like "the old days when jily was the main thing and now its all queers and sirius was super macho man masc") or like ignoring all nuance of characters who were villians and cinnamonrolling them and just a very fetishy outlook on both mlm ships and womens relations to that and it is so refreshing hearing someone speak about it so eloquently. 💗

Don't know if anybody said that already, but anyway... Roxanne actually is a character from a very famous russian fanfic (actually the author is Ukrainian, but the fanfic is written in Russian language). The name is "Дни мародеров", or "Marauder's days". it was really popular in the Russian side of the fandom and I was a fan myself lol.
I came back to the fanfic in 2018 or 2019 and was hugely disappointed by the amount of misoginy and terrible plot choices in the fic. A few examples: James gets mad at LIly when he finds out that she is not a virgin, Sirius is a massive f*ck boy, who believes that he can sleep with everyone, but gets extremely jealous towards Roxanne, Remus falls in love with his teacher 🤡she is a woman in her 30s
Not to mention, that obviously, all the characters are straight, except for two briefly mentioned death eaters. I guess, the author of this fic was really following JK footsteps. Yes I was a fan of this too, but I was so young and stupid. Can't express how happy I am that I've discovered ATYD and the modern fandom 💗
Also Viria and the author of the fic were kinda friends? I guess... that's why Viria was drawing Sirius and Roxanne so much. I even remember watching their joined stream.

Barty's fancanon is a bad boy, loud, prankster/joker, menace to society, tattooed, smoker, drug user, with soft side(bbg) + he's good at school and gets good grades(why he was such a good teacher). Barty is sometimes fancanoned as Ravenclaw because of his intelligence. Barty is often shipped with either Evan(Rosekiller) or Regulus. Yes, he killed and tortured people in canonically but he's often fancanoned to do such things in revenge of someone killing Evan Rosier. People usually like the version of Barty that didn't kill/torture anyone(I AM THE PEOPLE). Bartys other fancasts I have seen are young Skeet Ulrich.
Evan is often seen to having similar personality type as Barty but more as calmer and quieter version. Evan is often fancanoned as black person with blonde hair and as Pandoras' sister. Evans fancast changes a lot but I have also seen Hugh Laughton-Scott or Dominic Fike(poc) as his fancasts.
Pandora is usually fancanoned as Regulus best friend and having a similar personality as Luna: sweet, kind, reserved, etc. Pandora as I mentioned is mostly fancanoned to be Evans brother. Pandoras other fancasts change too but I have seen her the most as Amandla Stenberg(LOVE HER). Pandora is often shipped with Dorcas or Lily.
I don't know much about Dorcas so I can't say anything😭

aaaa so happy to find this video when I did! I've been in the fandom for a month or so now mostly through tiktok (though I'm old enough to remember seeing mutuals on tumblr in early 2010s having their fun) and I was just asking on reddit subs about what the fandom was like back in the day and what's shifted etc. this was such a nice overview esp with the characterization changes a la ATYD and things like Blackinnon vs Wolfstar popularity, with some of the older big fics name dropped. I haven't seen anyone talk about the fanart either - what great finds!
I'm not at the end of the video yet but I just HAD to comment at the dorian regulus mention because ME TOOOOOOO me too!!!!!! and even rafa as james is so so spot on as well. (I haven't seen many people talk about cosplayers, maybe bc older fans aren't in the same spaces like tiktok etc, but that's such a fun side of this fandom to explore)

YOU TALKED ABOUT COSPLAY OOOOOOOO not me having just finished the entire dandy lyon club catalogue last night and not knowing what to even do with myself anymore......and the mischief productions oh my GODDD I absolutely agree about level of production, I feel like in all the fandoms I've ever been in through all the cosplayers that have graced us with their depictions and friend groups I Really Really truly have not seen it done like them. cannot believe we get to exist in the same timeline as A Night's Tale and The Ascendent and everything else they touch. I have a fun little goal where I save up some weekly coffees to donate every time they upload something new to get them on their way :")
really seriously the cosplay in this fandom is what ultimately drew me in and the fact it's so prolific makes sense when there's no canon to depict them off of! maybe the best fancasts are the ones where the fans themselves are cast!!!!!

When I talk about early fandom I talk about before 2010... I started 2002/2003, I think. There weren't any girls but sometimes Lilly or OCs because we didn't even have NAMES. I hated JKR paired up Tonks with Remus not only because of Wolfstar but also because Tonks was one of the very few WORKING, independent women in the HP-Universe. She totally changed with the Remus-lovestory-plot. It's strange to read my own early Moonstar fanfics. A lot of "facts" today are from the films (Remus' scars) or just were published later (therefore my Sirius is not smaller than Remus, they are almost the same size in my head). Tbh, I stopped caring about JKs opinion whe she started to put things on pottermore contradicting her own canon. I really was dissappointed when we all learned about her extreme hateful views on trans people, but I didn't care for her opinion for YEARS, so...
I had a longer pause with fanfictions and was really pleased with the fandom's development in the 2010s. Enjoy a lot of new content but I will never be a special friend of Jegulus, sorry (although I read a few good fics with it) 🥴
