“He’s headcannoned as queer, sometimes trans, sometimes Japanese” and “he smokes, he loves David Bowie, he’s dyslexic” respectively took me out in fact
I will never recover from the fact that the fandom took a total of about 3 sentences of jks work and created an entire new fandom where everyone is gay
@@FreyaEinde exactly! The fandom already created their own spinoff prequel that rivals the original books. While they decided to make a movie based off a text book then tried to shoe horn it into a 5 movie saga about the wizarding war 🤯 isn't of taking advantage of the readymade fandom from stuff that was barely covered in the books & especially the movies. The FB saga was such a mess it ended at 3 😂 and was mostly to try back up her claims about Dumbledore (& Grindelwald) which was only barely touched in the last one. *After this I accidentally had a late night ramble about how I thought/would have liked the "Wizarding world" rebrand prequels to be had they thought it through and what could do after this reboot back to HP. Basically develop different places and times throughout history that are important world building elements. And that by the time they work their way up from the founders, show Dumbledore and Voldemort's journey to what we know them to be during HP; then it would be time to reboot the HP series again... Without the trash can, possibly when we're all older than it is now* 😂 (But imagine if it rebooted in 2090s, it set 100 years in the past 🤯) Newt was alright but much better left to the one movie instead of forcing into the war drama (just let him focus on his book! It was the inspiration of the movie and could of continued to develop the Wizarding world -which they changed their name to move trying to go beyond HP 😆 could been a series with a different creature each episode) instead shoe-horning him, his friends & weird references. Such as Dumbledore teaching DADA with no explanation, Miss McGonagall teaching at all during newts hogwarts years which can't be the one we know. They could have focused on her post war era in a series/saga following Voldemort (like a dark version of HP, which would have complimented Harry's arc of their similarities, taking us back to the original format in a different way) who went to school with her and Hagrid. Then the Marauders Saga (possibly forcing on Lilly -continuing the theme of the discovery of magic- but also James -breaking it to show contrast- highlighting their differences but bound together as the future parents of the chosen, and seeing the influential friendships etc; then the second wizarding. Both sagas ideally pre film flashback scenes for the eventual HP reboot, making them nice Easter eggs. Ideally actors reprising their parts when possible, but they do have a history of losing actors after only 2 movies, for one reason or another. But the Crown changed actors each era and this is a few eras (1st Wizarding war, post war/Vol, Marauders, 2nd Wizarding war, post war/HP/3rd Wizarding war, post war/potential next gen; each 3-7 movies, like a decade per war 🤯) if you to do this you might as well go all out: show Dumbledore in his youth being led astray, the founders, before & after the statue of secrecy. I would like to see the huge moments in history that played a pivotal role. Maybe in the next reboot; which is planned for about 2026-2036 and may be followed by a next gen as they wanted to do a cursed child, with the historical prequels possibly covering 3/4 decades. So following this the next reboot could be in 50 years, with completely fresh people... if we're still interested & capable/haven't destroyed everything by then 😅 hopefully not (imagine if it rebooted in 2090s, it set 100 years in the past 🤯)
When i read the first hp book when i was eight years old i could have never predicted that one day I would hear the phrase “the babygirlification of death eaters” but here we are
sirius black sending severus snape to the shrieking shack while remus is transforming is just like rachel berry sending sunshine corazon to a crack house for her glee club audition
The fact that the Harry Potter fandom created an entire new fandom based on extremely minor characters is god tier. The writer of All The Young Dudes probably feels like a king right now. I would deadass love an entire recap video on All The Young Dudes lmao
as a marauders fan, who deeply uses them as a way of escapism, this video is hilarious i can’t. the struggle of explaining it all to people is CRAZYY. like how am i supposed to explain that characters mentioned in a single sentence were then put into a fanfiction with the setting of the hunger games AND IT HAS MORE WORDS THAN THE BIBLE?? fucking help.
I'm mildly ashamed that I noticed, but quick fact correction - when you went over canon at the start, you mentioned lily doing dark magic to protect harry. That's fanon - Rowling really went the 'true love' route. In canon, it's the strength of her love when she sacrifices herself. Widely in fanon, people called bs and went the 'given we know she was 'the smartest witch of her age' she probably laid some ritual magic to make sure her son survived' route. Just a small thing.
The dark magic thing is definitely my preference, because the "true love" explanation inadvertently implies that anyone who was successfully killing-cursed was not truly loved, which is gross.
@@a.morphous66 Don't forget that in She Who Shall Not Be Named's opinion, being a mother is the greatest thing that a woman can aspire to so therefore a mother's love is thus the most powerful and important kind of love. And that it wasn't just that Harry was loved, but also that Lily died protecting him specifically.
@@a.morphous66 Eh, if someone wasn't given the choice to step aside to do the whole sacrifice thing anyway, then the person they are protecting will be killing-cursed successfully. So I wouldn't call it gross, especially if it was the sacrifical love thing.
@@a.morphous66 "true love" is just wording i guesss... i think it is somehow explained by Dumbledore that her sacrifice saved Harry specifically because she didn't NEED to die. Voldemort told her to move aside because Snape asked him not to kill her. AND it also worked because she didn't know it WILL so she could have done it on purpose. Like Harry created the protection in DH because died for all the fighters, but not intentionally.... if that makes sense? I'm pretty sure it's canon, but it could be Super Carlin Brothers spin on things :P go watch them they explain it better :)
it feels so unhinged to me now that back then when i first got into the marauders fandom i wrote an essay in french on my fav book and chose atyd 😭😭 to this day i want to know so bad how my teacher must’ve felt reading that text being like “my fav book is all the young dudes, a sequel of harry potter written by mskingbean89, following the story of harry potter’s dad and his friends. there’s romance between remus lupin and sirius black…” like how did i pull that off and was able to look my teacher in the eyes afterwards 💀💀
'ever heard of a little twink named Dumbledore?' has been replaying in my brain non-stop for the past 24 hours. the funniest thing i've ever heard, permanently altered me on a molecular level, thank you.
So interesting to hear that the stereotype for Remus is that he is the least academic. I was never deep in the Marauders fandom, but I read the occasional Wolfstar and I remember (in my tumblr prehistory of 2011-2012) the dynamic being that Remus was the academic of the group and that although James and Sirius were very smart, they didn't care as much about grades. How times change. Or my brain rot is further gone than I thought and I am misremembering.
I think Remus would have been the smart kid that worked hard for their grades. Sirius and James would have been smart kids who just get the material quickly without trying hard. And Peter was just an average kid with really smart friends, so he was able to skate by easier than others in classes. I don't know if there is much to back me up in my thoughts, but the one scene where the boys are talking about their exams, and joking about the answers, Peter is genuinely panicking over his test, whereas the rest are more nonchalant.
i genuinely think it was ATYD that changed this. why is that fanfic more influential for the marauders fandom than all the Official Media combined it’s crazy
i love how old wolfstar is as a ship like i still regularly scroll by fics originally published in 2004. i hope it never stops being canon in the fandom
honestly i didn’t really understand jegulus as a ship when it started popping up everywhere, but hearing you describe regulus as “draco malfoy, basically” and about regulus being a stand in for sirius since wolfstar is the bible but ppl want angsty traumatized emo x lovable himbo jock genuinely made it click for me and now i understand
I mean I preferred the Marauders "fandom" before it was a whole ass separate fandom from the regular Harry Potter fandom but I liked James/Sirius and back then while it wasn't as popular as Wolfstar it wasn't like, the bible or anything.....and kind of lost interest when there became 0 marauders content with anything else. And also I just moved on from being /that/ involved with the fandom once the series was over where as many people did not........ So I kind of see why people wanted a stand in for Sirius but at the same time.....y'all do realize you're allowed to have different ships coexist you don't have to force one character to stand in for another.....maybe not.
when you touched on the fact that the women in the fandom aren’t really as talked about, it was completely true. as someone who writes fanfiction for this fandom…i absolutely love writing wlw fics but i’ve noticed that when i post them, they get absolutely no reads compared to my fics about mlm ships, when if i’ve put 70% more effort into it than i do with the mlm fics. sexism in this fandom is definitely NOT spoken about enough.
I’m 23, so I was mostly into fandom culture like 12-7 years ago. I don’t know if I was just in a different portion of these fandoms or if things have changed since then in significant ways, but I remember everyone being way more invested in the female characters than they seem to be now. The main marauder fanfiction that I was into was called “The Life and Times” and it included all those side characters and everything but it was primarily about James and Lily still. And I feel like het, wlw, and mlm fanfics we’re getting at least closer to equal attention? I don’t know if fandom culture has just changed a lot over the last decade, or if I’ve just grown up more and therefore noticed this more, but I’ve been increasingly weirded out by the extent to which straight/bi women are obsessed with gay men and their sexuality, especially in fiction. When straight men fantasize about and over sexualize lesbians, we rightly acknowledge that that dehumanizes them and is just generally kind of gross energy. But then when straight women are obsessed with reading about gay men having sex, I feel like we act like it’s this progressive slay moment when it seems like the same to me? Idk if this is a recent cultural phenomenon or not, but it’s something I’ve been noticing often and it’s been kind of disturbing to me how it dehumanizes gay men and reduces them to sex objects, and sidelines women or entirely paints them out of the picture. Like if you’re equally into everything that’s one thing, but it feels sad to me how so many women are honestly kind of antagonistic toward women having any prominent roles in the stories that the fandoms create. It seems like a new form of “not like other girls” in a way, like “oh of course I’m not interested in any straight stories” but it’s just a way to ignore women and objectify queer people in a way this you wouldn’t do to straight people. Idk if any of this made sense, wnd maybe it’s just me but I’m kind of getting bad vibes
@@maybesopgia yeah, it’s so frustrating. It’s almost like queer men are puppets or dolls that straight women can play with to entertain themselves. Idk like maybe more queer men than I realize are fine with it because of the added representation, and it’s just my queer male friends who aren’t feeling great about it. At least that’s what people argue makes it okay, like “we’re adding representation so us sexualizing these men nonstop is great actually.” But I know that as a woman, I’m not feeling grateful when a woman is added to a story just to be objectified and treated as a sex object
this issue is constantly brought up by sapphics (especially lately with the release of the dungeon meshi anime, at least from what ive personally seen) but arguments are constantly shut down by stuff like 'well why dont you write/draw more f/f then?' (the ratios are like 1 to 100 its impossible to compete and people dont care), 'female characters are less fleshed out' (people will create pairings between guys who barely ever talk in canon so clearly they dont have this issue with men) or 'i only read m/m because i dont like to be reminded that sexism exists' (???). its crazy people refuse to admit that misogyny can be internalized and can affect something like fandom, and that fetishization of m/m is rampant. we live in an androcentric society and yes, even fandom falls victim to it. like, hell, for exemple, theres an among us tag on ao3 and 50% of the fics are m/m, for a game with genderless dialogueless blobs 😭 nobody wants to think about their relationship to female characters in media because its simply too awkward.
I'm fully agreeing and loving this comment train, but i was just wondering what the og commentors fanfic alias is and where they write so i can find some wonderfull wlw fics.
As a Jily lover this is where the good stuff is for me!! And sadly I’ve also seen a fair share of lily hate/slander on jegulus fics so this assures me that there won’t be any of that bs 😅
snape slander and shipping death eaters together with a cutesy name being a part of the same fandom is crazy lol. finally learned what the plot of ATYD with this video, thanks carley
@Joenotsoexotic69but you could literally say that snape was looked down on for being in Slytherin and a half-blood, wanted to be accepted so he started to insult muggleborns so they'd lay off him. I mean its not an excuse but having racist fascist parents also isn't. I feel like its fictional so its whatever babygirlificy whoever you want but at least don't be a hypocrite
@Joenotsoexotic69 I’ve been thinking about this comment and, maybe it’s partly that but I think it’s mostly misogyny. Lily, for example, didn’t just get murdered by wizard Hitler. She also had to deal with a toxic friend and fell out with her sister, that’s something that people CAN relate to and is really interesting but it’s only been recently that people have really started exploring her character and dimension. Plus, characters like Evan rosier and barty crouch jr get a lot more attention and love than the girls, even tho they have just as little (or less) to sympathize with than the girls.
Guys let's be so fr rn. It's because Snape is canonically uggo and the marauders fans wants cutesy hot people getting together. They almost word for word take Snape's arc and years as a spy and throw it onto Reggie for a reason.
This is giving me flashbacks to my children's literature paper, where I got marked down for my Prisoner of Azkaban essay for writing about Remus Lupin the gay HIV allegory...
to add to ur analysis of jegulus may I propose that "my older brother who I thought would always protect me abandoned me in an abusive household and then replaced me with you" is sooooo juicy like it truly adds a layer to the himbo jock will save me that you do not get with james/sirius
I think Jegulus is also so popular, because it often ties into a "happy ending alternate universe" for the marauders, rather than the tragic canon ending!
or this could be even more devastating for the angst girlies when Regulus becomes a death eater because he feels he has to in order to protect sirius and also live (he would get abused and possibly killed if he refused) so is forced to break up with James as they are on opposite sides of the war but later tries to leave since he realises he has to do something to kill voldy since james and sirius and everyone else on the other side of the war that he still loves will die since the death eaters are being lead by someone that is currently immortal and no one knows so then hunts horcruxes and dies in the cave when he was trying to get out and back to James, leaving James behind... (thats the basic story for 'canon-complaint' jegulus fics)
@@prongs_little_king ohh that is such a good point! I like a bit of that angsty narrative too, but (after having read more than enough sad canon) i now just need them all to be okay haha, at least in the end!
But I feel like Tragic Canon Ending is what makes the Maurders such an interesting group. They grow up in the middle of a war and then get torn asunder at the age of 21.
I also think the fact that J.K. Rowling said that being a werewolf is a metaphor for hiv (which is WILD when you have Fenrir Greyback as a werewolf targeting children, when people looove to say that the gays are targeting children) plays a big part in Lupin being seen as gay/bi
I don't know that that's a major reason why people usually HC'ed Remus as queer. He's introduced in 1993, a general outcast in the wizarding world, with a secret that may get him fired and/or put in danger. As soon as the world finds out, he is instantly canned bc he expects parents to demand he not teach their children. And IIRC, that tidbit came out long after the marauders fandom settled on key characteristics. I think queer fans just saw a character they could relate to in many ways.
it's so homophobic. but him being hc as queer is also bc that's what cuaron decided for POA and told thewlis to play remus as gay, so thewlis went with remus being in love with sirius. not sure if the sirius actor was told anything.
this is so fascinating, the experience of watching this video as someone who was in the 2012 marauders fandom on tumblr but hasn’t touched anything Harry Potter since like 2016… it’s like hearing how your elementary school friends are doing now as adults, absolutely fantastic video 🙏🏻
I'm sorry but where tf did those Bellatrix x Rita and Alice x Narcissa originate from?! 😭I'm literally bisexual so I love me some gay representation but some of these fans are reaching! Also I lowkey kinda hate aroace Peter because why did people look at the fat, stupid, traitorous character and decide "yeah lets make him our aroace representation"??? Idk that's just me...
@@helenbrennan2344 No thanks for mentioning them because I had no idea a couple existed lol. Now I won't be surprised when i come across fanart or something.
from someone who's incredibly active in the marauders fandom: James: sun, jock, rich, often pansexual, often desi, pureblood, sometimes depicted as having ADHD or anxiety, typically shipped with regulus or lily. Sirius: star, arrogant but secretly insecure of many things, pureblood, often french or asian, affected by his traumatic childhood and The Regulus Situation, usually gay, bi, or trans, ALWAYS shipped with remus. Remus: moon, nerd, usually gay or bi, sometimes dyslexic, halfblood, either flirty and violent or shy and quiet there is no in between, shipped with sirius almost exclusively. Peter: trying his best is most of his personality, often asexual, often plus sized, pureblood, in AU (alternate universe) fics he is usually a good friend and isn't always a rat. Lily: girl, radiates spring energy, usually either lesbian or bi, headcanoned as plus-sized, muggleborn, most commonly shipped with james or mary but occasionally with marlene, sassy and smart. Marlene: punk-badass icon, usually lesbian, shipped with dorcas or sometimes lily, usually pureblood but it changes depending on fic, jock. Mary: bi, straight, or lesbian it changes, black in fanon, muggleborn, flirty, sassy, sometimes has a previous relationship with sirius. Dorcas: usually lesbian, often has a rivals/enemies to lovers arc with marlene, black in fanon with being seen as more dark-skinned than zoe kravitz, pureblood but it varies, smart, usually incredibly sarcastic and snarky. Regulus: star, shipped with james for sunshine x grumpy arc/enemies to lovers not only as a sirius substitute, traumatized, gay or trans, usually french or asian, has problems with sirius, usually dormmates with even rosier and bart crouch jr, smart, posh and "stuck up", sarcastic, has anxiety. Evan: headcanoned as a POC, sometimes said to be pandora's brother (known as the rosier twins), usually gay or bi, pureblood, shipped with barty crouch jr (rosekiller). Barty: canon ravenclaw but often depicted as slytherin, shipped with even rosier (rosekiller), pureblood, daddy issues, usually rich and stuck up, usually gay, canon incredibly intelligent but fanon chaotic dumbass. Pandora: sometimes headcanoned as a POC, sometimes evan's sister (rosier twins), usually ravenclaw, but sometimes slytherin, blood status unknown, hippie-chick vibes, usually either sells or smokes weed, "weird girl", often aeroace, or lesbian, or bi, doesn't have many ships but sometimes is shipped with lily evans (pandalily) or sybil trelawney, close with regulus. there are other more minor characters such as emmeline vance, bejy fenwick, frank longbottom, alice prewett/fortescue/longbottom, etc.. that are mentioned sparsely in the books or have been fabricated by fanfic writers and other fans. characters that are apart of the slytherin skittles/emeralds have very little canon information so the majority of their fanon info is debated on and have many headcanons so it's hard to explain their situations. often, especially in older fics, the valkyries (usually mary, lily, and marlene but sometimes includes dorcas, pandora, and emmeline) are undermined and not given much attention/have no personality other than "pretty girl with attitude" which also makes these explanations difficult. ALSO- there is currently a fan-made series being made called The Rise of the Order (TROTO) about the marauder's lives at hogwarts during the 70s, I'm pretty sure it will be released on youtube when it's complete but I highly recommend checking it out if you're looking for more marauders content. I spent way too much time trying to put this into less than a 56-page essay and I would love to see more marauders content in the future
@@bixiella7830if you liked the hunger games and want to experience that nostalgia mixed with the marauders (no magic involved though) I definitely recommend Crimson Rivers. Give yourself some time to get into it and suddenly you won’t be able to stop :) And also better women representation imo whilst still keeping the main ships like wolfstar and jegulus :))) The choke hold it has on me rn is insane, hope that helps, otherwise check out some of the other fics by the same author of Crimson Rivers (all on ao3 and i think you need to create an account to read it)
@@bixiella7830 "Only the Brave" I loved. It's a retelling of the final year in hogwarts plus the first few years of wizarding war, basically Regulus secretly saving the wizarding world by being a morally grey hero etc. If you can ignore the fact that the narrator's voice sounds a little too modern, I can highly recommend this one! it's just unhinged fun.
every since carley said on the podcast that people tell her she gives off mean girl energy it's driving me insane. how?? how?? this girl melted all her makeup to feed tumblr and ao3 girls for an HOUR. she is SACRIFICING herself and carley i love you
as an avid marauders fan, i think you hit on all the good points however, you are truly right that you have barely scratched the surface this is the deepest dive i have seen in one video, and i applaud you for that. the dedication is Insane it is truly amazing (and appaling) to see what a fandom can do with eight characters that were only mentioned a few times in the original canon
pls don’t let this video make me start reading marauders fanfic again pls don’t let this video make me start reading marauders fanfic again pls don’t let this video make me start reading marauders fanfic again pls don’t let this video make me start reading marauders fanfic again
lmao I still remember the old fandom days where there were actual arguments between people who shipped wolfstar and people who shipped sirius with marlene
Okay I'm glad somebody said it because I've been scrolling through the comments far too long & nobody has mentioned this! A lot of the fics I read way back when had Blackinnon
Dude same! I'm apart of the Marauders fandom and I'm bisexual so I'm obviously all for queer rights HOWEVER I've come across SO MANY toxic Wolfstar and Dorlene shippers absolutely slandering other fans for not shipping those ships but Blackinnon and Dorcas with Remus or Peter instead. These ships are completely fanon so it's WILD to me when people who ship Blackinnon are called homophobic. Like what? That is not how homophobia works lol. I like Wolfstar and Dorlene BUT I also like Blackinnon and if I'm reading a Marauders fic and they're one of the pairings I'm not gonna stamp my foot like a toddler and leave in anger lol. Some Marauders fans need to get of their high horses and remember that the Marauder Era is 99.9% fan made so it's not canon and they can't mad at anyone who doesn't agree with their head canon.
I just want to say, I wrote a marauders fanfic at 13 that got so unbelievably popular that I still see a character that I created being referenced in other marauders fanfics. 13 was a rough year for me (and all of us, lets be real) and this fandom was basically new when I started participating in it...I'm shocked to see how much its grown.
as someone who has been in the Marauders and Wolfstar fandom since 2007 (in fact, I was part of the spanish Marauders fandom and it was already big, so the english fandom had to be up and running way before), so 10 years before All The Young Dudes was published, I'm surprised about people treating ATYD as Marauders "canon", since it's pretty OOC and NOT actual canon compliant, and I know a lot of older Wolfstar fans that truly don't like these characterizations. I enjoyed it, because it is well-written and well-researched (at least the 70s muggle culture part). and speaking of thatm ATYD definitely didn't introduced the idea of having the Marauders being into 70s muggle popculture, for example Sirius and Andromeda, the two rebelious Black kids, being into muggle music has been part of their headcanon forever. I discovered A LOT of music just by being in the fandom.
Isn't Sirius liking muggle culture like a thing in the actual books? Like I swear it's said in maybe Order of the Phoenix(?) that he has posters of muggle things like motorcycles and girls, so liking muggle music might not be too far off right?
are there any pre-ATYD fics you would recommend? I've only recently been introduced to Marauders through it. I did really like it, but as you said, not very canon-compliant, so are there any you recommend from 'before' that were influential to the fandom?
@@Sky-bu1jj sadly, i don't think i remember any. back then i was exclusively part of the spanish part of the fandom, since i didn't become fluent enough in english until i was in college, and by that point i wasn't as invested anymore. i didn't save any and probably most of them have been deleted. i do remember the fic that was the ATYD for spanish speakers back in the day, it was called Marauder!Crack, published on Livejournal by a woman called irati. it was supposed to be just a bunch of drabbles but it got incredibly popular so she kept going and it became our unoficial marauder canon. since it was published 20 years ago, it had plenty of inaccuracies, given that the last two books hadn't even been published yet. unfortunately, i tried to re-read it again a few years ago and couldn't find it, but i have very fond memories of it.
my favorite thing about the marauders fandom is how they’ve transformed jks characters that were mentioned for like two seconds in the books into full blown stories about said characters with aspects ab themselves she would actually hate.
It never made me comfortable that a predominately straight/straight leaning female fanbase will write these gay ships like they’re gospel and completely leave the female characters (that they’re actually paired with in the text no less) in the dust. It says so much about a) the way they view queer relationships and b) the way they view themselves. Why do they hate Lily so much, she is so important to the actual story of Harry Potter that i can’t imagine telling a story about her time at hogwarts without centering some of the narrative on her. I know it’s just fanfiction, I just think there’s a bigger issue going on here than just fandom.
I somewhat agree that there are problems but I also understand leaving jks female characters in the dust, especially the more mentioned ones, because they are written like the writer hates women. Their point is to support the men, they are meant to be bad women or masculine and therefore more important, stepping stones for the plot and the male characters. We know so little about Lily, it makes so little sense that she would fall in love with such a huge bully of her childhood friend and we have no idea what happened to cause that, her point is to die for her son and all we see in harry of her is eyes, the rest of harry is ’so much like his father’
This is the best RUclips video on this app I swear. I was low key giggling kicking my feet lmaooo but also as a HUGE Rosekiller and “Slytherin skittles” fan I’d also like to say that mulciber isnt apart of that group and also Rosekiller and these death eater characters are often written as, yes insane, but also very fleshed out and complex with all their personal issues. Anyways this is so awesome I was so happy watching this you’re so funny!!
I've seen so many Marauders edits on tiktok that I kinda forget the fancast actors didn't play in actual movies. And whenever I see photos of Ben Barnes in "Dorian Gray", my mind immediately goes " Sirius" not "Dorian" ahah
It might sound weird, but sometimes i do think imagination is the purpose of humanity and people using their imagination together to create a fandom like this is so beautiful to me.
ngl hearing all the marauder's lore explained out loud made me realize how absolutely criminally insane me and everybody else in that fandom are, that being said, do I still religiously listen to David Bowie and eat a bunch of chocolate... well yes of course (also I feel like another draw to the fandom is the fact that Remus is usually depicted as disabled/chronically ill which is another minority that barely has ANY REPRESENTATION at all ANYWHERE. So for people like me its just so incredible to read fic where Remus' health issues are at the forefront and you see how it impacts his life and relationships, etc.)
@@sjdessorrrrr people can take inspiration from a story that stuck with them & flip it on its head to create something beautiful despite the author of the source material being a piece of shit
omg I was writing Marauders fanfics with my friends in high school in 2005/2006 (!!!!!), I feel like a grandma 👵🏻 I wasn't familiar with today's fandom, girl, this video made me nostalgic. but speaking from an jurassic fan perspective, Lily was really an important part of that universe, and I still love her as a character.
I thought teenagers were symbols of hope for our future, but now that I know they're fucking up my historical marauders head canon I'm rethinking everything
I used to be in the fandom a while ago but stopped and THIS is my reintroduction to it after years- I am absolutely baffled by the slytherin skittles and jegulus which wasn't as popular before but now is just the main thing?? i dont like the tiktok-ification im sorry 😭
thoughts from someone who was IN the trenches 2015-2020: - remus was actually a mix of soft boy / david bowie in most of those fics. he smoked and listened to alt music but was also academically strong due to not wanting to be held back by circumstances (this was also the time where TRC was big on tumblr so there were many parallels between remus lupin and adam parrish) - remus and lilys friendship was often the linchpin. remus and lily were friends before she and james were dating, they gave each other advice, she was his main go to during the fall out of the Prank - sirius was the punk rock misunderstand Baddie with niche interests and adhd energy but was more the doberman to james’ golden retriever. - lily indeed was “girl” witty, kind, intelligent, academic but also intrinsically worked within the marauders group. bi, obviously. her friends were usually marlene, alice and frank, dorcus and mary, with marlene being her “best friend” and portrayed similarly to how she is in modern marauders fic - james has been HCed as desi since about 2016 from my memory and the loyal, steadfast happy go lucky vibe from those times seems to have persisted because he’s honestly just a lover boy who’s very hard to get wrong - regulus mostly existed as an angst point for wolf star or conflict within sirius’ internal life and did not usually have a major impact - peter was usually portrayed as the Other One, always there, occasionally funny and existed on the fringes, which kinda led into the portrayal. tl; dr: major character differences from early 2010s marauders, sincerely written by an early marauders Expert (i read and wrote these fics up until last year)
This video was a wakeup call that so much of my nostalgia for Harry Potter isn't from the books or movies themselves, but from being so heavily engrossed in the fandom during my ~formative years~ Preteen/teen me: "omg these books are so good, even the minor characters have so much depth, so much deep lore!!!" Adult me: "No, girl. 99.9% of what you knew about these characters was exclusively through FANFIC"
ok so i'm like pushing 30 and the last time i was around this fandom was in 2012-2013. here are things i consider canon: Sirius is gay, Remus is bi. they dated in Hogwarts and got back together once Sirius escaped prison. imo it's kinda implied in the books: they live together, they send Harry gifts/letters together. after Sirius dies, Remus is understandably depressed and grieving. he finds some comfort in Tonks, prob also bi, but pushes her away throughout HBP cause he's not ready to move on. like that is canon in my mind, not even fanon lmao
26 here and this is the only way I can accept Wolfstar as a possibility and still like it. I’m a canon purist so I hate how so many fanfics kind of erase or diminish the canon relationships (like Remus/Tonks and James/Lily).
26 here and you're so right. it's so obvious that in deathly hallows remus has a mental breakdown when he learns that tonks is pregnant because she's his essentially-husband's cousin and it's all a bit too much
There's sooo much tragic potential in their relationship and how they would absolutely both make each other better and be capable of destroying one another. Also the symbolism - they became Animagi for Remus and Sirius' form is a dog, so close to a wolf? 😭
I am 20 and decade younger and this has been my theory since I read HP at the age of 11 lmfaooo. I also think Remus actually never liked Tonks properly and initially thought so because she potentially has a personality similar to younger/carefree Sirius. But also I have always disliked Remadora.
I appreciate your analysis of Snape literally so much. As someone who loves BOTH the Mauraders and Snape, it's so important to strike a balance between Snape's canonical actions (that he spent the rest of his life atoning for) and James's relentless bullying, and your unbiased analysis is one of the first Mauraders fans I've seen actually acknowledge the circumstances! (Also I ship Snily which is one of the most unpopular ships but I think fans also tend to forget that James was really creepy to Lily LOL)
43:29 dude the way i started listening to all the young dudes (the song) bc of all the young dudes (the fanfic) and one time i was playing it while i was cleaning my room and my dad RAN in to ask how i knew it and i simply didn’t have the heart to tell him the truth…
This is super interesting as someone who was very into Marauders fics a decade ago or so. It's super interesting to see how the collective imagination has expanded and changed. Some things are similar but it seems that this fic 'all the young dudes' has truly been a seismic shock that shifted things around a lot. Remus's character seems to have done a straight 180 especially, from this shy studious and somewhat serious person who is just going along because he's loyal into almost an exact opposite.
Very fitting that this video was sponsored by Babbel, since I need to learn a whole new language to understand whatever any of this fandom is. Great video!
That "you just gotta know" part killed me lol, in the fanfics they just name drop random characters and expect you to KNOW EXACTLY WHO THAT IS, and everybody in the story know who it is, so you just feel ashamed to say that you don't know, shut up and pretend. At this point I feel like every beginner in this fandom just "fake it till you make it" the f*ck out of it lol
SAME! I absolutely LOATH how some Marauders fans have made Sirius out to be this 4'0 tall girly girl who bows to the will of 7'0 tall "i'm gonna fight you" muscular alpha minded Remus...like what?! What happened to tall, muscular Sirius who has tattoos and smokes and lowkey has an alcohol addiction and rides a freaking motorcycle?! Just because he has long hair and is frequently paired with Remus doesn't mean he's suddenly weak or whatever. And why in Gods gren Earth would people start headcanoning Remus as violent when he was literally terrified of hurting people because of his lycanthropy??? I love sweater wearing, chocolate eating, quiet, nerdy Remus who also smokes and gets crazy sometimes but doesn't beat everyone to a pulp for breathing lol.
truly i believe remus would be more nerdy and quiet but that doesn't make him weak - in the ootp he states that dumbledore made him prefect in the hope he would restrain james and sirius, he can be cool and confident whilst not being the cassanova of gryffindor tower - that is definitely james and sirius
This showed up at my yt recommendations and I thought "why not listen to 1h of random hp lore while playing freecell" and what a great video! I am a HP fan, but in my most active years in the fandom (2010-15) marauders era never really got to me. I remember seeing a lot of stuff on tumblr about it, but the fact that I knew how they would end never gave me must interest. I was more of a Next gen era girl lol (which could also be a topic I would speak hours nonstop about). It always fascinated me how creative people can be when expanding the fandom lore, nextge is the same, you got a few lines of dialogue and a list of names and they ran with it. there's also cursed child but that whole thing is cursed and makes no sense so I just pretend it doesn't exist. I used to have a list of over 40 characters (canon and fanon) to populate my headcanons of it.
I've been in the Marauders fandom since the beginning, I literally met one of my best friends by dressing up as Remus and quoting the Shoebox Project... I do not need to watch this video and I will absolutely be devouring this video anyway.
Still currently watching but little correction for about minute 20:00 - in the books (which is canon), Snape never finds James and Lily dead, it's Sirius who finds them (which is all the more tragic). The movies changed it for no apparent reason, it makes no sense to me tbh.
watching this after being out of my phase for a year now is so nostalgic, i used them so much as an escape for almost three years and it’s such an interesting thing to look back on. a part of me will always love them so much
the marauders fandom is genuinely my roman empire… i remember watching a grant edit with august by taylor swift in 2021 and crying uncontrollably. those were the days :)
whats also a shitty thing done by JKR is you find a lot of 'villainous' characters who aren't seen as 'truly evil' like voldemort or Lucius will be fat, like Peter pettigrew or Like the Dursleys, for example, and their fatness is seen as inherently bad and is written as such. The only good characters that can also be fat have to be 'motherly characters,' like molly weasley. Molly's fatness is seen as nurturing and this is contrasted with Petunia dursley who is the only person who isnot fat in the family and we recognize this as it being a 'fault' in her motherhood because she is not nurturing enough.
The fact that I discovered ATYD because I saw it while randomly looking through Carley’s read books on Storygraph one day, thought that Remus’s POV and queer tags were enough to convince me to read 1800 pages worth of heartbreak and devastation and now finally watch her deep dive into the Marauders lore is a perfect full circle
all the young dudes is basically the marauders fandom bible (also side note 43:15 ..i feel called out because i was introduced to t. rex through atyd when i was 13)
38:09 its been so long since ive seen this movie but rita skeeter going 😱 after he says barty crouch is so iconic i also love how long he waited to give the "jr" reveal like he 100% did that for the drama
Honestly, the biggest appeal of Jegulus for me is the star-crossed lover aspect that is mainly their own doing. It's usually shrouded in this "we must keep this hidden from everyone" whether that be because of the Slytherin-Gryffindor rivalry, plain homophobia, Regulus' abusive parents, Sirius' disapprovement, that in the end boils down to massive amounts of trauma and conditioning to the point that Regulus is unable to see their relationship as anything more than a temporary escape from the future that was decided for him which he won't (read cannot) fight. It's very much a "right person, wrong time" but the right time will never arrive because of circumstances the characters find themselves in and the knowledge that one of them is doomed yet remains unwilling to change in order to save himself. The angst potential is just too good to ignore. Also isn't it written Dorcas and not Dorcus or am I crazy?
I'm just an average guy who was a big HP fan growing up,but I was never really into fandom or stuff like that. This video got recommended to me by the algorithm and I must admit I'm beyond confused now. Like what do you mean most carachters I know have now a different backstory and carachters I don't even remember from the books have their own backstories? It's honestly crazy how creative a fandom can get and how much this is so far away from the original literary works. I was legit expecting an Harry Potter type thing but this is entirely it's own thing. This thing got me speechless. Guess I'm too old to understand fandom.

Proof the kids who read these books were always more creative and wonderful than said OG trash can creator
Without the trash can, possibly when we're all older than it is now* 😂
(But imagine if it rebooted in 2090s, it set 100 years in the past 🤯)
Newt was alright but much better left to the one movie instead of forcing into the war drama (just let him focus on his book!

I think it might have been meant as a joke

Or my brain rot is further gone than I thought and I am misremembering.
love this essay you're so right babe
I think Remus would have been the smart kid that worked hard for their grades. Sirius and James would have been smart kids who just get the material quickly without trying hard.
And Peter was just an average kid with really smart friends, so he was able to skate by easier than others in classes.
I don't know if there is much to back me up in my thoughts, but the one scene where the boys are talking about their exams, and joking about the answers, Peter is genuinely panicking over his test, whereas the rest are more nonchalant.
I absolutely remember reading on the good ol' Tumblr that Remus was the academic of the group 🫠
in general remus is def still the academic. the only thing i’ve ever seen where he was portrayed as being unacafemic was all the young dudes

i love how old wolfstar is as a ship like i still regularly scroll by fics originally published in 2004. i hope it never stops being canon in the fandom
honestly i didn’t really understand jegulus as a ship when it started popping up everywhere, but hearing you describe regulus as “draco malfoy, basically” and about regulus being a stand in for sirius since wolfstar is the bible but ppl want angsty traumatized emo x lovable himbo jock genuinely made it click for me and now i understand
So I kind of see why people wanted a stand in for Sirius but at the same time.....y'all do realize you're allowed to have different ships coexist you don't have to force one character to stand in for another.....maybe not.
jegulus is the same vibes as drarry
jegulus feels very nico di angelo/will solace to me
when you touched on the fact that the women in the fandom aren’t really as talked about, it was completely true. as someone who writes fanfiction for this fandom…i absolutely love writing wlw fics but i’ve noticed that when i post them, they get absolutely no reads compared to my fics about mlm ships, when if i’ve put 70% more effort into it than i do with the mlm fics. sexism in this fandom is definitely NOT spoken about enough.
@@katie-allen it’s totally a whole *straight woman looking for gay best friend* type thing

Plus, characters like Evan rosier and barty crouch jr get a lot more attention and love than the girls, even tho they have just as little (or less) to sympathize with than the girls.

or this could be even more devastating for the angst girlies when Regulus becomes a death eater because he feels he has to in order to protect sirius and also live (he would get abused and possibly killed if he refused) so is forced to break up with James as they are on opposite sides of the war but later tries to leave since he realises he has to do something to kill voldy since james and sirius and everyone else on the other side of the war that he still loves will die since the death eaters are being lead by someone that is currently immortal and no one knows so then hunts horcruxes and dies in the cave when he was trying to get out and back to James, leaving James behind...
Read only the brave it's the best jegulus fic I know of and it has a happy ending plus you get BAMF regulus i love himmm
@@sanvikalloli7775 literally so good
I also think the fact that J.K.

Headcanons/things I would like to add:
-Bartylus (bartyxregulus) pre rosekiller
-Pandora was in ravenclaw
-trans regulus
I'm sorry but where tf did those Bellatrix x Rita and Alice x Narcissa originate from?! 😭I'm literally bisexual so I love me some gay representation but some of these fans are reaching! Also I lowkey kinda hate aroace Peter because why did people look at the fat, stupid, traitorous character and decide "yeah lets make him our aroace representation"??? Idk that's just me...
@@helenbrennan2344 No thanks for mentioning them because I had no idea a couple existed lol. Now I won't be surprised when i come across fanart or something.
Who are those people who headcanon Peter as aroace? Why not any other character? Its kinda disappointing tbh
also barty was in ravenclaw along with pandora!! it’s kinda crazy tho cuz barty is characterised as the MOST slytherin of all the slytherins😭

from someone who's incredibly active in the marauders fandom:
James: sun, jock, rich, often pansexual, often desi, pureblood, sometimes depicted as having ADHD or anxiety, typically shipped with regulus or lily.
I spent way too much time trying to put this into less than a 56-page essay and I would love to see more marauders content in the future
hey!! so i read atyd, are there any fanfics you'd recommend or that are popular? i don't usually read ff but damn this video moved smth in me

@@bixiella7830 "Only the Brave" I loved. Okay I'm glad somebody said it because I've been scrolling through the comments far too long & nobody has mentioned this! A lot of the fics I read way back when had Blackinnon
omg this😭💀
I just want to say, I wrote a marauders fanfic at 13 that got so unbelievably popular that I still see a character that I created being referenced in other marauders fanfics. 13 was a rough year for me (and all of us, lets be real) and this fandom was basically new when I started participating in it...I'm shocked to see how much its grown.
well now you have to tell us which one it is :D
Yes, please. Tell us. I wanna read it :) Great job writing so well at 13!
ooooh can you tell us the title?
as someone who has been in the Marauders and Wolfstar fandom since 2007 (in fact, I was part of the spanish Marauders fandom and it was already big, so the english fandom had to be up and running way before), so 10 years before All The Young Dudes was published, I'm surprised about people treating ATYD as Marauders "canon", since it's pretty OOC and NOT actual canon compliant, and I know a lot of older Wolfstar fans that truly don't like these characterizations.
I discovered A LOT of music just by being in the fandom.
yes its interesting how not canon atyd is!!
Isn't Sirius liking muggle culture like a thing in the actual books? Like I swear it's said in maybe Order of the Phoenix(?) that he has posters of muggle things like motorcycles and girls, so liking muggle music might not be too far off right?
@@moni-w9oyou’re spot on!! It’s seen as a “rebellious” act because his parents were so anti-muggle.
are there any pre-ATYD fics you would recommend?
The melting makeup adds drama and cinematic value
its symbolism
my favorite thing about the marauders fandom is how they’ve transformed jks characters that were mentioned for like two seconds in the books into full blown stories about said characters with aspects ab themselves she would actually hate.
I read the entirety of All The Young Dudes just so I could watch this video. Definitely a roller coaster. Absolutely need another video 😭

NO BECAUSE I SAW A DORIAN EDIT YESTERDAY AND COMPLETELY FORGOT THAT THAT WASN'T ACTUALLY SIRIUS
It might sound weird, but sometimes i do think imagination is the purpose of humanity and people using their imagination together to create a fandom like this is so beautiful to me.
ngl hearing all the marauder's lore explained out loud made me realize how absolutely criminally insane me and everybody else in that fandom are, that being said, do I still religiously listen to David Bowie and eat a bunch of chocolate... well yes of course
(also I feel like another draw to the fandom is the fact that Remus is usually depicted as disabled/chronically ill which is another minority that barely has ANY REPRESENTATION at all ANYWHERE. So for people like me its just so incredible to read fic where Remus' health issues are at the forefront and you see how it impacts his life and relationships, etc.)
Did you ever read Text Talk by merlywhirls? I remember that was my formative Wolfstar fic, it's a non-magical AU where Remus has a chronic illness.

thoughts from someone who was IN the trenches 2015-2020:
- remus was actually a mix of soft boy / david bowie in most of those fics. he smoked and listened to alt music but was also academically strong due to not wanting to be held back by circumstances (this was also the time where TRC was big on tumblr so there were many parallels between remus lupin and adam parrish)
- remus and lilys friendship was often the linchpin. remus and lily were friends before she and james were dating, they gave each other advice, she was his main go to during the fall out of the Prank
- sirius was the punk rock misunderstand Baddie with niche interests and adhd energy but was more the doberman to james’ golden retriever.
- lily indeed was “girl” witty, kind, intelligent, academic but also intrinsically worked within the marauders group. bi, obviously. her friends were usually marlene, alice and frank, dorcus and mary, with marlene being her “best friend” and portrayed similarly to how she is in modern marauders fic
- james has been HCed as desi since about 2016 from my memory and the loyal, steadfast happy go lucky vibe from those times seems to have persisted because he’s honestly just a lover boy who’s very hard to get wrong
- regulus mostly existed as an angst point for wolf star or conflict within sirius’ internal life and did not usually have a major impact
- peter was usually portrayed as the Other One, always there, occasionally funny and existed on the fringes, which kinda led into the portrayal.
tl; dr: major character differences from early 2010s marauders,
sincerely written by an early marauders Expert (i read and wrote these fics up until last year)
This video was a wakeup call that so much of my nostalgia for Harry Potter isn't from the books or movies themselves, but from being so heavily engrossed in the fandom during my ~formative years~
Preteen/teen me: "omg these books are so good, even the minor characters have so much depth, so much deep lore!!!"
Adult me: "No, girl.
Literally im 30 and this is also canon for me
26 here and this is the only way I can accept Wolfstar as a possibility and still like it.
“you kiss your mother with those anti- wolfstar lips?” 😭

‘The babygirlification of deatheaters’ ❤
the sirius and remus personality and aesthetic swap will be my roman empire i HATE it😭

I love sweater wearing, chocolate eating, quiet, nerdy Remus who also smokes and gets crazy sometimes but doesn't beat everyone to a pulp for breathing lol.
i like remus just being some geezer atyd remus is peak remus cos he isnt all wishy washy or a wet biscuit i reckon he would have been a mod
truly i believe remus would be more nerdy and quiet but that doesn't make him weak - in the ootp he states that dumbledore made him prefect in the hope he would restrain james and sirius, he can be cool and confident whilst not being the cassanova of gryffindor tower - that is definitely james and sirius

The movies changed it for no apparent reason, it makes no sense to me tbh.
watching this after being out of my phase for a year now is so nostalgic, i used them so much as an escape for almost three years and it’s such an interesting thing to look back on. a part of me will always love them so much
Ahhhh! Thank you for this video! I’ve been looking for a comprehensive intro to the marauders. This is so perfect.
the marauders fandom is genuinely my roman empire… i remember watching a grant edit with august by taylor swift in 2021 and crying uncontrollably. those were the days :)
whats also a shitty thing done by JKR is you find a lot of 'villainous' characters who aren't seen as 'truly evil' like voldemort or Lucius will be fat, like Peter pettigrew or Like the Dursleys, for example, and their fatness is seen as inherently bad and is written as such.
I have a feeling this will turn into one of those comfort videos I revisit at least twice a year

Thank you uncarley for continuously sacrificing your own brain to provide us with this juicy content

Also isn't it written Dorcas and not Dorcus or am I crazy?
yep it’s dorcas meadows imo
as a wolfstar shipper since pre-2010, why has it never occurred to me that we know NOTHING about them from canon but we all agree on so many things 😭😭
