It's 1986, I'm 19yo, and it's the last song of the night at Park Ave in Milwaukee, on one of the Thursday night alt nights. I'm in a long black narrow skirt with a high slit and a cream colored vintage silk blouse and combat boots. I have a crush on the friend of a boy I had been dating, but we were more friends than anything. This song comes on and I would think it was kind of cheesy when couples at a punk/alt/goth type club would dance a slow dance, but when he asked me dance I didn't hesitate. We went out a few times after that. I don't really remember a whole lot about what we did or how long it lasted (not long, lol) I'm 56 now. But I can remember this little slice of my life as if I am there. I can picture him, I can even remember how to spell his last name, which is no small feat, Bajczyk. Such a beautiful, innocent, and pleasant memory. Thanks Howard, and thanks Jerry B.

The waves crashing on the beach….. The moonlight in her hair caressing her soft, warm, silky skin. We spent an entire week running, laughing, playing in the ocean and just really enjoying a life that was so simple and pure. Times then we’re just so much different than now. Our summer came to a close and we parted ways with sadness in our eyes. We stayed in touch but eventually lost contact. To this day I still think of her and that glorious summer and wonder if she does the same….

160 acres is quite the garden! Quite the amount of weeding! “… occasionally watch TV”: this is a phrase that is seldom heard today. Watching TV in the 80s was connectivity as well as relaxation at its peak, especially when the channels were few, as in the U.K.. When the phone in the hall rang, everybody in the family encouraged everybody else to “see who that is.” I suppose I miss the way we all related to each other when we would watch films, shows or dramas, or music performances more to the liking of somebody else in the family. We only had had one television. Wondering “what’s on the other side” was a gentle admonishment to tell your brother, sister, mother or father to “turn over” and “see if anything else is on.” A sign of a real dearth of entertainment back in the day? Certainly not! More than I ever knew at the time it was a way to (occasionally) chat among ourselves, if there was at least something on that was still worth watching. “Look and you’ll see” was my mum’s way of explaining a favourite drama of hers that probably only came on weekly and of which I wanted a quick summary (in order to understand what my mum understood, I guess). Colour terrestrial broadcasting and the live broadcast of the very first Space Shuttle launch in the summer of 1981, I recall watching, seemed to represent to my young mind all that the world would ever need. But I really think the world needs to slow down. Not the world maybe, but people. All this technology now and so little genuine entertainment that lifts the spirits. Our former household names and icons of entertainment and art now reduced in stature in the palm of one’s hand, literally: Elvis in miniature, if ever somebody today should “tap” on Elvis. Watching TV again I say would set the world right. If only a mobile phone could be rooted to the hall!
Here I am at age 52, and I remember this song came out when I was a teenager. This was a great song and brought me back to some good memories. What a great song!! It was great listening to such a melody song which will never get old to listening to.
The overproduced 80's sound didn't help. It would be great to hear without all the textured easy-listening keyboards all over the place. I would love a more rock sound to it. That said, I am still moved by it.
@@marcmarc1967 listen to the original album version, which is the version I prefer. I really didn't like that Phil Collins put his fingers all over an already great song. The "click" track is annoying.
I totally get why alot of people were not moved by this song. Thanks for asking.... "His words subtly wreaked of the injustices upon many generations of disenfranchisment, imposed systemic racism, and color line hate placed upon millions of Black men, women, and children of this Nation". Still not satisfactory addressed in this Country to this very day. 🎯👨🏽✈️✈🌍🏆
*This song hits me with so much nostalgia it hurts. We didn't know at the time how great we had it. I guess we all thought it would last forever or even get better, but that was sadly not the case. I love the bass line so much and would give anything to go back to the 8Os. People actually talked in person, nowadays everyone's heads in their phones missing all the best parts of life. Nothing will be like or even compare to the 8Os.Thank you so much Howard Jones.❤❤*
Came out my senior year of high school. A deep and touching song. It has a whole new meaning now that I'm 56 but it still hits hard. We were so lucky to have grown up in the 80s. We had the best music and musicians back then. Cheers from America! Edit: The lines we understand the most now that we've grown up... "You can see the summit, but You can't reach it. Last piece of the puzzle but you can't make it fit. Doctor says "You're cured" but you still feel the pain. Aspirations in the clouds, but Your hopes go down the drain." Pure genius. ✌
We didn't know then how much we would miss it many years later. I was already 31 when this came out but still loving the music that was hitting our radio airwaves back then.
Came out in my sophomore year. It's crazy how a song like this seemed "normal" for Top 40 radio back then, when now it seems like a brilliant classic with timeless lyrics. None of us back then know how good we had it with music. Miss those days.

I think of my best friend in the 80’s when I hear this song. He loved it. He learned to play it on the piano, and he would sing it a lot. My friend tragically died in his early 20’s. He’ll always be a part of my heart and soul. It’s amazing what music does to and for us.
I’m sorry for your loss! Sounds like she was around my age. In her honor, I’ll hereby appreciate being alive today, despite whatever problems bother me about aging. What I want to know is did she and her brother each buy their own copy of the album, or did they go in on it together? I would have ended up in a fight with my sis trying to share an album.
The 80's were incredible with songs like this on MTV and the radio, no other decade has produced so many unique songs that touch the soul and pull on your heart strings, for those who grew up with songs like this, we were damn lucky!
We were indeed lucky & spoiled too. These songs were not only incredibly catchy with great melodies & hooks... they pretty much came out every week or two as well. Definitely can’t say that about today’s music.
I grew up in this era and can't believe we were living through the best music and best times. We didnt realize it. Always thought great music would always be around! Awesome time to be alive.
I still pretty much only listen to 80's music, and I don't mean Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and all the other "pop music" stuff. Love all the alt bands.
Split Enz were melodramatic in 'I hope I never' but quietly petulant and ironic at the same time. .. so amusing! They were and remain geniuses as well.
Forever in my heart. This song reminds of a time when I was happy, young, and living with all my siblings and parents. I wish there was a time machine. I'd go back to the 80's in a heartbeat.
When this song hit the radio in '86 I was 20, living at Myrtle Beach, and somehow met this beautiful, smart redheaded Canadian girl from Peterboro who was down on vacation. We hit it off like mad; an exciting, magic connection that even now, some 36 years later, I remember with a hitch in my breath. But, back then - there were complications - none the least that we lived so far apart, and were so young. In time, of necessity, we moved on. No one was to blame. Still though, and until the day I die, when I hear this song I'll briefly be 20 again, holding her, feeling that magic... Thanks, Howard.
My friend, we live in a parallel universe. I also met a girl (on a cruise) in the summer of 86. I was 16, she was 14. Immediate attraction and fell in love. I was from California, and she was from Georgia. When I got home from the cruise, this song would bring me to tears because I missed her. We met one more time, and then drifted apart. When I hear this song, that meeting comes to life in vivid color.
This made me smile. I had a similar experience with a girl from Charlotte I met at Myrtle Beach got my Dl and went up to take her to her prom. It was so sweet!
As a child of the 80s I loved this song, I heard it in the 90s while living a rough life as a working mom. It had a whole new meaning. Its just good. ❤
Give me just one day of life in the 1980s, and I would willingly give up 100 days of life in these times. Those were better days. If I knew then what I know now I would have cherished it all the more .
"the insecurity is the thing that won't get lost" so true. If you have a heart, this song will hit you. Great song and a true and meaningful, no talking about how much money a gangster has, or calling women bad names, no cussing, this is real music.
I love reading all of these impact testimonials from my favorite songs. As music and everything else sells out more and more I feel more connected to something tangible reading these. They are so real and display how much music matters. Thanks everyone.
So did I. I grew up listening to songs like this on the radio. Cyndi Lauper, Richard Marx, Billy Joel and many others that were in their prime during the 80's. Their music is timeless and we were blessed to grow up with such rich, soul churning music.

I was 14 years young when this came out. Let me tell you about the 80's... The only decade that the old, young and in-between will say was the best decade.
So true! It seems like the music in the '80s was much more cross-generational. Popular music on the radio back then was typically written by slightly older, more mature people, with a more uplifting and appealing message than today's teeniebopper crap.
Luv this song it reminds me of the years spent at my grandparents house in Randolph Kansas. I looked up to my cousins. They’re beautiful. All I ever wanted is to be like them there but we lived here cuz my dad died. It stopped our lives and I hate him for it.

Such a beautiful song... about the "what if's" in life and true longing. I remember when this came out in the 80s... I've grown to appreciate it more over the years. Truly timeless
I actually heard this on the radio a few months ago for the first time ever and I’ve been listening to radio regularly since the 90s. I had a glorious trip to work when that song came on.

I have people that have died, old regrets. Many years of repressed emotions and anger. Then I hear this song and can't stop crying. The hate is gone, but the pain still lingers at an emotional level. I have no choice but to cry daily after holding all all these emotions for many years my body just can't hold them in any longer
I'm not here to tell my sad story but this song helped me through the hardest time in my life. Thanks for writing amazing music, it helps people make it through.

I'm 56, time passes so quickly, kids nowadays from what I see seem much more isolated than in the 1970s when I was a kid, they use to ride bikes, climb trees, maybe even fall over God forbid, sadly most kids nowadays seem lost to the Gods of the tiny screen in their hand what a world this has become

I was 28, married for 5 years. The 80's were phenomenal, Everything was possible. The music, the style, the hair. Women were just the most beautiful and sensual beings. If you missed it, well, it's a shame if you missed it. Nothing compares today and probably never will again. Pitty.

Born in 63. Growing up in the 70s and 80s was the best. Would not sell a single memory. Sorry for those that missed it.
I was born on Valentine's Day of 1963...my mom was in labor for 27 hours with me. I'm so glad to experience the 80's.
Born in ‘63 also! The 80’s were pure awesomeness.

EIGHTIES BEST ERA EVER❤
Came out my senior year of high school. A deep and touching song. It has a whole new meaning now that I'm 56 but it still hits hard. We were so lucky to have grown up in the 80s. We had the best music and musicians back then. Cheers from America!
Edit: The lines we understand the most now that we've grown up...
"You can see the summit, but You can't reach it. Last piece of the puzzle but you can't make it fit. Doctor says "You're cured" but you still feel the pain. Aspirations in the clouds, but Your hopes go down the drain."
Pure genius.

Interesting song because the music sounds inspirational -- but the lyrics are a downer LOL
I was a U.S. Marine when Howard Jones had a string of hits, this song being one. I literally wore out 2 cassettes of his music while stationed at Camp Lejeune! A complicated & stressful time, really. Had my only child during those years - he’s 36 today!

What a song. Phil Collins' drums and backing vocals are such a fantastic compliment to the mix!

Not exactly. The original version was on the Dream into Action album, which was released in the United States. This version was re-recorded with Phil Collins performing the drums, released on the US EP Action Replay, but the I'm sure this exact single was released worldwide, including in the UK. As far as I can tell, the album version was never released as a single.

Howard Jones is an overlooked genius. Great melody, hooks, chorus and lyrics. Deep without being melodramatic or maudlin.
His Songs are like that he had a few his cover of Everlasting Love is a gem despite that Songs been covered so many times
8 Million records sold not counting streaming RUclips, 16 Million and counting = his grossed income. Not really overlooked..
But melancholic

Forever in my heart. This song reminds of a time when I was happy, young, and living with all my siblings and parents. I wish there was a time machine. I'd go back to the 80's in a heartbeat.
Brilliant lyrics. Brilliant melody. Brilliant song.
Hi I Recommend a song Called 'The Bond villain' By Robert Nix
Well said!!
Love your fairy tale...
Sad
My friend, we live in a parallel universe. I also met a girl (on a cruise) in the summer of 86. I was 16, she was 14. Immediate attraction and fell in love. I was from California, and she was from Georgia. When I got home from the cruise, this song would bring me to tears because I missed her. We met one more time, and then drifted apart. When I hear this song, that meeting comes to life in vivid color.
She must've showed you to spell Peterboro that way. Usually, only people from there spell it that way.
😀
This made me smile. I had a similar experience with a girl from Charlotte I met at Myrtle Beach got my Dl and went up to take her to her prom.
It was so sweet!
As a child of the 80s I loved this song, I heard it in the 90s while living a rough life as a working mom. It had a whole new meaning. Its just good. ❤
Don't worry my child 🌹🥂🌌
Give me just one day of life in the 1980s, and I would willingly give up 100 days of life in these times. Those were better days. If I knew then what I know now I would have cherished it all the more .

The 80's were just a special time for anyone who was a kid back then --- seemed like a more carefree time where people loved to laugh

So true! It seems like the music in the '80s was much more cross-generational. Popular music on the radio back then was typically written by slightly older, more mature people, with a more uplifting and appealing message than today's teeniebopper crap.
