If time would have just stood still in those magical times. I am 60 now, but I look back on the 80's as the time I really grew up. I graduated high school in '79, but I had the best years of my life in the 80's! I think back on those years with such a variety of emotions. Sometimes this music brings me back to that time in my life and I feel so sad that those times are gone. Some of the people are gone forever, some are still around, but we've all moved on and hopefully look back fondly on these memories. I miss those days...best years of my life!

Back in the day, Curt Smith seemed to get a bit more publicity as the "lead" in Tears For Fears, but I have always thought that Roland Orzabal is both the more talented musician and the better singer. This is not to take anything away from Smith, but in modern performances the mild deterioration of Orzabal's voice - which is obviously understandable - noticeably reduces the richness of the band's vocals. I think it is amazing that they still perform with the quality that they do, but Orzabal's voice had an unmistakable resonance that simply can't be replaced.
And without Duran Duran, Simple Minds, Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode, The Cure, Siouxsie Sioux, The Smiths, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Hall and Oates etc. there would be no 80s.
Roland Orzabal's voicebox is like a gift from the gods. It actually sounds like several human voices combined simultaneously, so resonant and rich is it.
Innocence? What about hardcore punk, metal that turned into sex crazed hair bands? The grinding depression of goth, nuclear war protest (and that's all just the music). Get grounded friend. Nothing innocent about the 80s.
This was filmed at my university's library, Emmanuel College. The number of hours I spent studying, writing, and pondering there while listening to Tears For Fears and The Smiths, how meta. It was my oasis pre-pandemic.
Can we talk about Roland's intensity when he sings? He gives it everything he's got and has such a big voice. I just love when he sings "this is my 4 leaf clover" and holds up 4 fingers. So good.
The last sentence: "funny how time flies" is definitely spot on! This song brings me back to (junior) high during probably the nicest era to grow up: the '80's!!!
I don't mean to be a spoilsport or anything but I don't think it is helpful for anyone to fetishize one generation or another as being superior to the others. I personally love 80s pop culture, movies, and music, but the 80s had its fair share of struggles and strife. A lot of the wars were still fighting today were born from conflicts that began in the 80s and earlier. During the 80s everyone thought that the world was going to be imminently ending in nuclear fire from the conflict with the US and Soviets. They used to have kids do nuke drills in school. Definitely not like it wasn't just as terrible in the 80s as it is now, you were just a child then so you don't remember the bad, you remember being a child.
This video is such a great way to tell the story about the lyrics of this song- how embarrassing and how vulnerable you can be when you admit to someone you’re falling for them and not knowing how they’ll react to it. Music videos from this time were really something amazing
I've always enjoyed this video because I like Tears For Fears and Ghostbusters. With the flying library cards, there's a similar scene at the beginning of the1984 movie Ghostbusters. Songs from the Big Chair, I have on Record and CD.
In my opinion Tears For Fears greatest song. And one of my favorite songs. I love all kinds of music and I’m a big metal/thrash metal and punk guy but this has always been one of my favorites. It’s so well written. Not overly complicated at all but artistically put together so perfectly. Such nostalgic feelings every time I listen to it.
Funny enough, I would have never considered anything relating to 80s synth pop would be something I enjoy, but I love this song and pretty much any song by TFF. Thank God someone was making good music around that time.
45 here and same, I honestly can’t explain how I feel when I hear this. It’s like all of the hope, love, passion, and everything that was my teenage years is rolled up in the song. I wasn’t even a teenager when this was big but I think it just represents another time in life when the world was easy and my whole life spread in front of me. Love it so so much.
Well relevance, one of their songs “Everybody wants to rule the world” has been used in recent movies like Ready Player One and To all the boys I love before
@@tenrgn You stole the words out of my mouth. The 80's: you cannot explain it to anyone who never had the experience. This song is also one of my all time favourites.
Same here. Context imprint is so strong. I remember where I was and when I was, when this song was all over the airwaves. I bought the album "Songs From The Big Chair" and it became a fast favorite. So many years later... I'm teleported back when I hear these songs. The whole album was terrific. Sgt. Pepper level completeness. "Head Over Heels" is one of the best, up there with Broken and Mother's Talk.
Thomas Shepherd I agree with you! It’s one of those rare songs that get inside you-great arrangement, great melody, good lyrics and he sings it superbly ❤️
Thomas Shepherd: I don't think people truly understand how amazing Tears for Fears is in regards to a genre that speaks from the heart! Listen to the words "Everybody want to rule the world"............................Awesome! Love these guys!
this is possibly some of the first music I ever heard. My parents went to a tears for fears concert when my mom was pregnant with me, and according to her, this was the first song they played and she could feel me kicking to the rhythm. Fan from day 0!
Born in 1997 so I missed the 80s but, thanks to my parents who always listened to older music, this stuff got me through my middle and high school years. Thank you Mom for your awesome taste in music!!
Yeah 70's-80's was peak artistic talent in many genres for sure! These songs take me back to specific days, times and places. Almost as they make those memories come right back to me so many years later. I'm 46 and I wonder where in the hell 20+ plus years has gone?!
For real. My daddy would agree and love this comment. I’m a 1998 baby and I have always loved the 80s since I was little. This is one of my most favorite bands💜💜💜
I was in my early 20's when this song hit the charts. At the time, watching this video on what was then a novelty - "MTV," and seeing that last scene of the married couple in their old age, I thought - "How sweet. Someday, far, far away, that will be me and my wife." Now, near 61 years old, I realize that it's really not "funny how time flies." To all of you young people: enjoy your precious youth, my friends. Hold it more precious than gold, because "it slips away - like dust in the wind."
I'm about the same age. I still remember what I was doing the afternoon of LiveAid, in my 1976 Olds Delta 88 cranking Queen at Wembley. I always thought it interesting that Roland Orzabal, Matthew Brodderick and Jon Cryer had really similar looks, and could have been brothers.
I just hit 25 this week and revisiting a playlist I have made a couple years back, and funny enough I get that nostalgic feeling listening to this song. Its funny how your brain associates certain memories with a song. This one is definitely one of them and you're absolutely right. The last 7 years have gone by so fast. I'll never forget to live my life to the fullest and I encourage everyone to do the same

Fun fact, keyboardist name is Ian Stanley and was the unofficial third member of the group, appearing in several videos. I'm lead to believe he was sacked by TFF.
Lol it absolutely can, it's just gated reverb which was accidentally discovered when I believe the drummer for the Eagles played drums during advertisements of a radio show they were on, and the vocal mic which was outfitted with a gated reverb picked it up and someone listening liked the sound. it went on to define the 80s, and is still commonly used today just not as exaggeratedly.

One of the most beautiful songs ever. A lot of people associate 80s music with big hair bands and pompous pop stars, but it's artists like Tears For Fears that helped to define the crystalline, echoing, celestial brilliance of the music of that era.
I know. And I knew back then what the song was about. I still shed a tear, listening to the wistfulness in Roland's voice as he sings those last words. Gawd, I loved this band! 😏
This is honestly one of the most uplifting and nostalgic songs and videos ever. I feel so lucky to have this as part of my childhood soundtrack and now as a musician In adulthood, I am re appreciating the song from actually playing it
The 80s was the best era of my life, the memories I have are incredible, and very rare, so innocent- so alive.. you had to be there, was the phrase to live by. Everything was so extraordinary, and new, trendsetting, ppl trying so many new avenues of everything.. the food was delicious, the scenery was beautiful, and the people were so joyous.. so full of individuality, but still you had your clicks/groups.. I’m telling you, the 80s were something special.. the greatest era to be alive, I mean that.
Roland's vocals are unique and epitomize the 80's! This band was my soundtrack as a child growing up through that entire decade! Magical time never forgotten! 🎹
Ditto here. But instead of just my childhood, Tears for Fears has brought me through my life. It is so ironic that each song performed by this band has always carried me into my life at just the right time when each song was released.
As a person who did not live in the 80's (I was born in 1993) and grew up with more contemporary music, there is something special, something magical, a label, a brand, a perfume, a touch, an essence and a history with the music of the 80's. This type of music is an authentic journey of time, nostalgia and delicacy towards your ears. It will probably never happen again, but it will stay with you in your heart forever. I thank my parents for teaching me to listen to such masterpieces since I was a child.
Bro I got chills reading this I was born in ‘92 and I feel this exact same way. I get so much nostalgia as if I was really there. When I listen to it it’s like my mind starts to form memories that don’t even exist but they all form this “80s life” that i apparently can see & feel I definitely thank My parents & grandparents for exposing me to so many classics a child. I was actually exposed to this good 80s era from those old “informercials” that would play at night. The 80s songs would grab me instantly.
@@MichelleNorman-r1q You're right most songs I see in the comments sound substandard but then not everything has to be perfect either as we're all imperfect.
So much of the music from the 80s gives me this truly wonderful feeling, euphoric, that music from other decades since just don't. Bands like Tears for Fears and their music just sound so passionate and earnest, no pretensions, not trying to sound cool and edgy, just making sweet honest music that delivers maximum satisfaction.
Instantly unique and recognizable 80's music. No profanity or vulgarity like in everything today. No talentless rap garbage with "lyrics" about hoes, bitches booties, and killing cops.
I was listening to a podcast where the pop artist Lorde 5alked about how there's these unwritten rules about writing pop songs, about how there's rules about cadence and how words bounce and sing off one another that you kinda have to obey, and I think that opening line is a great example.
I was born in 1993 and my mom is a big fan, as am I, so when I found out they're touring I had to get us tickets for their show in Kansas City! They were awesome, and it was the first time either of us had seen them live :)

Roland and Curt have such unique voices. No one ever mistakes them for another band.

@Baris Coskun [Student] Not even close. The 80s were much better.

Exactly. I was 13 when this video came out. I tell every young person the same. Enjoy your youth , it will be gone before you realize it.

Bro I got chills reading this I was born in ‘92 and I feel this exact same way. I get so much nostalgia as if I was really there. When I listen to it it’s like my mind starts to form memories that don’t even exist but they all form this “80s life” that i apparently can see & feel
I definitely thank
My parents & grandparents for exposing me to so many classics a child. I was actually exposed to this good 80s era from those old “informercials” that would play at night. The 80s songs would grab me instantly.
Tears For Fears are one of the best bands ever!!! In any decade! I'll still be here listening to this jam in 2084! ❤
Hi I recommend a song And video called 'Life Changes' By Robert Nix
@@redskies4530 why?
9/10 when I go to a song recommended in the comments, and I do check them out, I don’t like it 🤷♀️
@@MichelleNorman-r1q You're right most songs I see in the comments sound substandard but then not everything has to be perfect either as we're all imperfect.
@@daveydudely9954 I disagree . I like a lot of the cheesy music from the 80s . I like how earnest it all was, it’s cheesy good
But there is also good music in the 2000s
Instantly unique and recognizable 80's music. No profanity or vulgarity like in everything today. No talentless rap garbage with "lyrics" about hoes, bitches booties, and killing cops.
"Funny how time flies"
One of the best lines in Music History
@@BigReptileCrew That scene in Dark Darko was epic! Oh man!
@@MJScoutArchMar So good with that little sped-up sequence with D.BMore so good
How absolutely true it is
Sadly, so true! One minute I was sitting my GCSE’s and loving 80’s music and life and then I blinked and I am now 52! Funny how time flies……
Same here! 57! I'm here during this Putin crisis, wishing I were back in these 80s good old days!!
Tears for Fears were so far ahead of their time... What an absolutely insanely creative, talented band. Mind blowing.
Just one great song after another! ❤
They have great songs, and they translate well into their live performances.
"I wanted to be with you alone, and talk about the weather" - I don't know why but this part is very catchy for me.
Yeah...same to me man
I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE... i put it on repeat just to hear that part
The beautiful simplicity of companionship expressed. I’ve always loved that opening line.
I was listening to a podcast where the pop artist Lorde 5alked about how there's these unwritten rules about writing pop songs, about how there's rules about cadence and how words bounce and sing off one another that you kinda have to obey, and I think that opening line is a great example.
Yesss
Tears For Fears are melodic geniuses.
Agreed
Yeah Roland ,Ian and Chris Hughes were a great team.
Yup

I was born in 1985 and my mom was a huge Tears for fears fan, so I actually grew up hearing these classics
So this what Danny MacBride did before meeting Seth Rogen
Damn my mom was born in 85 but my dad was born in early 70s I'm only 13😅
I was born in 1993 and my mom is a big fan, as am I, so when I found out they're touring I had to get us tickets for their show in Kansas City! They were awesome, and it was the first time either of us had seen them live :)
I'm 17 and same. But with my dad
You've got an awesome mom.! 😊❤❤
Funny how.. time flies
Man those piano chords during the verses never get old. This song has the most amazing VIBES.
The bridge was awesome to ….
The outro just kicks it up another level, stunning.
They give me tingles like a good asmr session. 😉
