I love just sitting down for five minutes, doesn't matter where I am, and just letting life flow past me as I listen to this. I think of people I've met, some no longer with me, some happy in their own lives, and some I lost contact with, and can only hope they're doing okay. I always take time to consider other people around me in a wider context and the life path they are on, and it gives me a massive 'yeah life can suck, but overall right now it's all right' kind of feeling. Love and light to everyone reading this
I am 76 and have lived with music all my life and have over 1,000 LP's/CD's starting in the 1950's. Each decade has produced its own stars and Bruce was certainly one of those of the 80's. However I felt that after the 80's the standard started to decline and I have bought virtually nothing since 2000. I feel privileged to have lived in what has been probably the best period in history for popular music.
For a long long time I have thought much the same thing.. But at the age of 55, I no longer play CDs or Vinyl much, yet I am enjoying more music than I ever have….because RUclips has it all there, all the great stuff from the beginning of recorded music basically… but what it also has is a lot of music I would never have found before YT came along. It might be great new covers of old classics, or else it might be brand new music being played by the kinds of artists you’ll have never heard of, but they know how to write and play real melodies, not that worthless crap that we hate, churned out by the famous but talentless twerking hacks of today. The piano in this song is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. This song was being played on the radio when I was driving home tonight, it's been years since I heard it ... and damn I forgot how stunning it is. There's something about 80s music that is so special and timeless.
One of my many regrets is that I never learned to play music. I tried to learn piano at the age of 9 but the teacher, a ghastly woman who lived above a bar called the Rising Sun (no, really), would beat me for not knowing something or other, so I decided I must be no good and gave it up. If she had not abused me I could probably sit at a piano today and play the intro to this song, just like we see in the first twenty seconds here, and that would make me happier than if I won the Lottery. But she did, and I can't, and that's another reason why paedophilia is wrong.
You are right, man! It´s so comforting to listen to such well arranged music! But at the same time, it is sad to confirm present days high quality music is so poor and scarce....
I DO know why ... because the Holy Spirit helped Bruce come up with this immaculate and tremendous piece of art. We can't even say if it is happy, sad, melancholy or ecstatic, for it is all at the same time. It's love and truth (and genius) - precisely what the Holy Spirit is...
@@sidpheasant7585 Sid there is a RUclips clip where he explains all. He seen poverty, injustice and racism on the streets in his home town. A great vid to watch
@@tommac5924 Yes have seen it, and do like it. I am fairly clear about his motivation, as is he. But I am interested in the mechanism allowing him to give sublime effect to what he felt. That is the miraculous part. We know Bruce is talented, but this piece transcends all the others, and transcends simplistic concepts like happy or sad. That happens when the Holy Spirit swings into action behind us, to give us wisdom, insight, strength and capacity to act... If we do not realise what has happened to us it might be seen as a lost opportunity, though the effect is there anyway. But I did realise when I stopped being "blind", and I'm very grateful for that, so I try to pass on and give back, as with this correspondence to you.
I'd be honored if some Bruce Hornsby fans would take a listen to my acoustic piano & vocal performances of AGAINST ALL ODDS by Phil Collins and WALKING IN MEMPHIS by Marc Cohn on my YT channel in tribute to a couple of great piano pop standards from the 80s/90s. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital editing. Thanks and Happy '020s.
It also breaks all the audio rules of mid-1980s hit singles - it uses real piano instead of synclavier, there's no big reverb pop on the snare, the bass isn't a fake funk slap-bass synth. It's not "urban dance", it's not "metal ballad", and it's not Hi-NRG. I don't know the story behind the song, but I bet the record company said "oh this will never be a hit single" but put it out anyway just to shut someone up, and then were surprised when it took off.
Ahhh, como eu amo essa música, em pleno 2024 ainda me emociono e muito com essa belíssima obra de arte,não tiro ela da minha playlist e ainda uso como toque do meu aparelho celular, amo❤
No not magic - BLESSED. The Holy Spirit was and is here. And the age can as much be the new age we are going to build, as some past age of our nostalgic dreams. We can change this, we must. With Father, Son and Paraclete.
I bought this Album when it came out in the '80's and have loved it since then. I love the the whole Album, in fact. It's August 21st 2022, and I will never get tired of watching and listening to Bruce Hornsby. Excellent Pianist! Thank you for posting this song.
the strange thing is, in these years and it's not just Bruce...they've created music that's forever. The music is good today, but it won't be in 10 years. Trends, hits are constantly changing. But this music is forever.
I saw this guy in Manchester many years ago / the support band failed to show up - guess what Bruce strolled onto to the stage and played for 3+ hours absolute legend that is the man
In my modest opinion, this is an exceptionally good song. Engaging rhythm, thoughtful lyrics and a really memorable melody. Also, the singing voice sounds just perfect for this song.
It is of superior quality. I didn't think he could excel it, and then I heard Mandolin Rain, which I still believe is one of the best songs ever written.
Esta canção é maravilhosa! Que década foi essa de 80, hein? A qualidade vocal, instrumental, arranjos é algo surreal!! Amo demais!!
One of the most moving pieces of piano playing in human history. It is signature for Bruce Hornsby. It moves my spirit. It is unforgettable and it is simply beautiful. The words carry their own message but for me, I am separated entirely by the music which is so deep in its composition that all I can think about is the hope of reunification with my beloved mother and father in heaven one day with my precious son and brother, both healed from their disabilities - no more tears, no more hurting, just utter joy and happiness forever thanks to the indescribable love, amazing grace and finished work of our Lord and Saviour. Thank You Jesus. I am eternally grateful.
So it seems that I may not be the only one to think that the Holy Spirit/Paraclete is somehow in this music, inspiring, residing, spreading love and truth and understanding through it. This is to take NOTHING away from Bruce himself, a genius. But it takes something extra special to raise our earthly genius into transcendant understanding and connectivity.
I am in my early 20s - I had just passed my driving test - I am driving home in the summer in a beautiful countryside setting with the window down listening to this song - now, 36 yrs on, I still love this song and that memory is still so strong - this is my all time favorite piece. Thank you 80s for being so great :-)
Thank you, Holy Spirit, for taking human genius and raising it higher, filling it with more meaning that we can fully take. But we try, and as we do it's as great as it is humbling. It just takes the breath away... And when that happens, whose breath fills that void? You know...
Have been playing this ever since it came out, consequently my girls were reared on it. My 24 year old told me the other day she had this on her 'Homesick' playlist while at Uni. None of her house mates had ever heard of it and were completely converted. I feel I have helped moved civilisation forward a millimetre or two!😢
These musicians were perfecting their craft not chasing money and popularity .It came anyway .They were contented to just share their love and wisdom through the music .I feel so much pain living in this present version that the world has taken on and thats because the 70s ,80s and early 90s gave me such a happy and peaceful time that I just cant adapt to whats going on now in music . Thank you Bruce !
I grew up to the song in the 90s. Remember my dad use to have a cassette of Bruce Hornsby and this was one of my favourite song on it. Remembered him playing it when it was raining and i cant do anything accept to stay inside and watch the droplets bouncing off the concreted footpath. Even though I had a very rough relationship with my dad. One of things im greatful for was him introducing me to Bruce Hornsby, particularly this song.
You may get this future "classic"...STRONG by JASMINE LAMPORT....mellow but deep. He said, "Son Well, that's just the way it is Some things'll never change That's just the way it is Ah, but don't you believe them" Mm, yeah well, they passed a law in '64 To give those who ain't got a little more But it only goes so far Because the law don't change another's mind When all it sees at the hiring time Is the line on the color bar, no, no That's just the way it is And some things'll never change But that's just the way it is That's just the way it is, it is, it is, it is

Some of us had a beautiful Bubble we lived in with no connection to the outside world Bar 4 TV stations and the newspapers. We look back at the times we rode on the back of a truck... Didn't wear seat belts and drank and drove. We were the lucky ones who never crashed nor saw people badly hurt. No controls on job sites and protective equipment? What's that. We survived we were bullet proof. Our bubble was such an illusion for the harm statistics and road deaths were enormous and the conditions on job sites appalling. We are the same people just connected to the www.. Anxious by the news and goings on....we want to unplug.. Go back to our comfortable bubble full of denial

This song never gets old and dated or overplayed, it's a true classic.
mostly because it's about racial justice and we still don't have it.

Propably one of the best Piano tracks in pop music ever made
Indeed!
i heard it at work today on the radio.. was dying to come home and play it on the piano!!! so good.
I am sure...got goosebums
that's just the way it is
True !!!
The piano in this song is one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. This song was being played on the radio when I was driving home tonight, it's been years since I heard it ... and damn I forgot how stunning it is. There's something about 80s music that is so special and timeless.
Yeah, no piano on the shit music of today
tout pareil en 88 en descendant de Paris vers le sud (Me too, on the road to Paris as the Sud of the France)
He's like the road runner of pop piano here, totally in a rush.
ABSOLUMENT MAGNIFIQUE!!!
I grew up in the 80's. This song takes me back to great times. Pulls out the inner feelings of then. It's magical!
My first year of high school.

I really don't know why but I get all chocked every time I hear this. What a beautiful, timeless classic. Up there with the best of them Bruce.

Very lovely piano song.
Tupac Shakur did a great job with this song as well.
C'est juste magique, un grand artiste !
Ahhh, como eu amo essa música, em pleno 2024 ainda me emociono e muito com essa belíssima obra de arte,não tiro ela da minha playlist e ainda uso como toque do meu aparelho celular, amo❤
Love this song. Not only musically speaking but the lyrics. The sound of the piano takes you to another age, its really magic.

Musica tempo salão baile 1986 tinha 20anos trabalhava metalúrgica glorimar saudade
@@sidpheasant7585 I very much agree. Have a blessed day.

True, but I would say blessed spirit more than emotion ... inspiring Holy Spirit in fact. Love and truth transcend happy and sad, as we see here.
The 80s were such a great time....That’s the way it was.

Thank you, Holy Spirit, for taking human genius and raising it higher, filling it with more meaning that we can fully take.

Standing in line, marking time
Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says, "get a job"
That's just the way it is
Some things'll never change
That's just the way it is
Ah, but don't you believe them
Said, "Hey little boy, you can't go where the others go
'Cause you don't look like they do"
Said, "Hey old man, how can you stand
To think that way?
Did you really think about it
Before you made the rules?"
He said, "Son
Well, that's just the way it is
Some things'll never change
That's just the way it is
Ah, but don't you believe them"
Mm, yeah
well, they passed a law in '64
To give those who ain't got a little more
But it only goes so far
Because the law don't change another's mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar, no, no
That's just the way it is
And some things'll never change
But that's just the way it is
That's just the way it is, it is, it is, it is

Thats the way it is!
