Just wanted to say I found your videos while researching an UL setup to fish the jigs I've been making, ended up buying the TFO panfish/trout rod and I absolutely love it.
SO glad I found your channel man! I've had the TFO 5'6" you mentioned for a couple years now. I have important information about it, because you'll probably need to repair it soon. The Pros- I've caught A LOT of fish on it, particularly fishing 1/32oz jigs. I've felt and landed just about everything on it. Stocked rainbows, longear sunfish, my pb rock bass at 15", several 11" bluegill twitching a rapala on the surface, slab crappie, a few 5ish lb channel cats, bass up to 3lb, and one very disgruntled slider turtle. Small fish feel good, but it can handle the big boys. Cons- The guide inserts are AWFUL. After 2 or 3 years of heavy use with 4lb fluoro and mono (never braid) every single guide, even the first reduction guide, had multiple grooves on it from line wear. The rod became completely unfishable, gnawing any line to bits in minutes. I've had to carefully strip every guide off so I can rebuild it with guides that will last. Why they would use such quality everything but skimp on such an essential component is beyond me. One personal con, it' still not as fast action as I prefer (grew up on Falcon HD series, now discontinued), there's a bit of wobble after a cast in comparison to a true fast blank. However it's still faster than all the whippy crappie rods I don't have much use for, and that's 90+% of ultralights in the USA.
That is good information! I have actually liked the guides up until this point, but I haven't caught 3 years worth of fish on the rod. I will keep an eye out for this issue - sorry that is happening.
Thanks for your insights on different price point rods. Still in time for holiday gift ideas. Hope your family and you have a healthy and great holiday season!
Great video Ethan, love the step up price point presentation. I wouldn't recommend a rod that I haven't used and you have the same approach. You broke it down honest and straight forward for us. Many thanks and God bless
The primary reason I don't review reels is due to the engineering behind them. It is much harder to speak with confidence about how something is constructed when I don't fully understand the various parts/materials. For me, my rule of thumb is to go with time tested winning brands and spend as high as your budget will allow. I like Daiwa & Shimano because they put out high quality stuff. Other brands are fine too but I don't think they are put together with the same level of quality.
Thank you so much! Maybe someday I will have a variety kit. It is very labor-intensive at this time to try to do something like that so it isn't a current possibility. That being said, as Mule scales and I have additional resources, it is definitely a priority.
I’m obsessed with my sensilite, I grabbed the 6ft light. Paired it with the shimano sierra 1000 size and I have a hard time not using it over all my other rods when it comes to panfishing. Just picked up a daiwa aridx so we’ll see if it can keep up. I also got the Procyon for my dad for Xmas so, I can’t wait to get out there and put everything to the test!
Yeah man that Sensilite is a badass for the price. Definitely agree. You should try your dads Procyon after he catches a few on it too. You will enjoy it :) You are a dang good son for getting him that rod for Christmas.
My absolute favorite ultralight in my arsenal is my fenwick HMX 5'6 it's what I consider the perfect action ultralight enough back bone for a good hook set and enough flex for a fun fight
I was hoping the HMX would get a shout out, it would be my pick around $100. I have a 6' one, been throwing 1/32 jigs to clear bubbles with water for a few years on it.
@@user-er1vy2jt3j yeah it's a excellent rod I have a bunch of ultralights like 7 others besides the HMX including a St croix trout series and I always find myself reaching for the HMX
I have the TFO in the 6' and 6'6" and love them but 13 fishing Defy Silver is an amazing rod for the price. I like them so much I now have 6 spinner's. The 5'6", 6'6" and 7' UL and two 6'6" light. Great video .
@@FishAnything Thank's, love the video's man. I also purchased the 6'2" Dobyns that you recommended. Very sensitive. I just haven't been able to get it out on the water yet. The fast action looks like it's going to be fun to fish. That rod wasn't cheap but I see you out on the water kicking butt with it so I know it has to be good.
Daiwa Presso Travel is unbelievable. I can't stop enjoying it. I caught stuff from tiny pumpkinseed to serious smallmouth with it and it's always super fun. Great sensitivity, so easy to travel with (I last used it on a canoe trip), it just feels great. I paired it with Okuma Ceymar C-10 reel, 6lb braid line, and 4lb fluorcarbon leader. Thank you so much for your advice.
are you familiar with the Daiwa regal line? I'm trying to decide between a 1000 or a 2000 as they appear to be the same specs weight wise. The 2000 having more line capacity I suspect it's due to a larger spool than the 1000. Any thoughts?
Both reels would be just fine. I feel that the 1000 would have more than enough line capacity for UL fishing but if you plan to need a lot, go up the the 2000. Spool diameter is likely the same; the 2000 is probably just deeper.
you should have talked about whoch reel you think will go well with the rod.. because some rods are either tip heavy or butt heavy. other than that.. loved the video and can't wait to see more ul rods review in the future.
Thanks for the feedback! I have a video on ultralight reel selection. Typically I feel a size 1000 reel is best for ultralight techniques. A size 2000 can sometimes balance a longer rod better but most reels are so light these days that they have a hard time offsetting the balance of a tip-heavy rod.
I picked up the TFO trout and panfish rod based on your 2021 video's recommendation and I haven't been disappointed. It's a great little ultralight rod paired with a 1000 size Shimano Stradic
I have the okuma celilo in 6 ft and its my go to jig and bobber rod with 2 lb test. I use my 13 fishing defy silver 6 1/2 ft for casting jigs and small crank baits and have 4 lb mono on it. 👊👍
Eastport E series has a $39 bfs rod I paired with my Aldebaran and caught 10 pound chammel cats and big bass. It comes with a medium heavy and a medium rod tip. 7ft 2-piece rods.. not to mention Kastking makes fantastic telescopic rods for $54
Thanks for the reviews. It's good to see you again. It seems like it's been awhile (two weeks can seem like an eternity sometimes). I look forward to your review videos in the doldrum months here in MI and really hope you do some ice fishing videos when we finally get that safe ice.
Haha thanks Rob! Yeah, life has been pretty crazy lately but I can assure you there is more to come. Hope all is well :) Let's get out on the ice this winter if we get a chance.
In the market for an ultralight setup and your channel has been a goldmine of info. What should I be looking for if I plan to throw little spinners and spoons along with with some small jigs? Fast action?
It sounds like you will want a versatile stick. I would go for something Fast or Moderate Fast but not too stout. You want a bit of a softer blank to load up on those treble hooks. A few great options would be the Temple Fork, Fenwick Eagle, or Bass Pro Shops Panfish Elite.
Great video! Here lately I have to fish on a tight budget and had to replace a UL rod that broke and I picked up a 5ft B'n'M little lucy UL light power rod and after using it for a bit now, I am actually pretty impressed with it for the price point it's at! Thanks for the great info!
The major craft finetail area stage rod is a very great for the money, you should try the baitcast version I think it’s the B58UL-2 for panfishing all the way to trout is pretty nice and fun
Thanks for sharing your insight. I saw your review on the Fenwick Eagle and how great it has been for your trout setup. Is that still the case? Do any of the rods on your list sub-$80 standout as a better option for trout? We can only use single hooks locally so I’m thinking about fast action. Would you recommend a Defy Silver as a better option? Thanks again for helping the community.
Hey there! I love the Fenwick Eagle for trout fishing, but to your point, primarily for the trebled hooks because it is soft enough to provide some "cushion". If you are fishing primarily singles, I think you can get away with the Eagle, but as mentioned, a slightly faster option might work even better. I think I would look at the Bass Pro Shops Panfish Elite for $80 because it isn't quite AS FAST as the Defy. But if you want to go a bit lower in price, yeah, the Defy should work just fine. Maybe run mono on it to soften the blow a little. Pretty easy to rip hooks from Trout's mouths if you have to stout of a rod paired with low-stretch line.
Hey Ethan, as always great video. Is there anyway you could do a head to head with the TFO 6’ vs Sierra 6’? You really seemed to like the TFO and Dobyns best in your videos. Keep it up man! Love the jigs and plastics! Now you need a signature rod, lol. Really love where you are heading with Mule.
Thank you Jason! Yeah, I think I could do a head-to-head at some point this year. The Dobyns is my favorite rod, but it is definitely much faster action than the TFO. Someday, I would love to have my own rod series, but I would prefer to work with an existing company if possible :)
Hi Ethan, all your enthusiasm and logical approach have helped me as a beginner get into fishing. I'll be showing my friends and their children your videos. Thank you so much for all your hard work and making fishing and outdoors fun!
Hey great video!! Been binging lots of your videos as I am trying to make a good trout setup. Have you ever heard or used Lamiglas Panfish and Trout? Very curious about it. Thanks again for all these great vids!
Ethan, Great video! Nice breakdown of different ultralight rods. Also hope to see a review of Eurotackle’s new nano spinning rod rated at 1/64 ounce to 1/8. As always great reviews and ultralight fish tips. Keep up the great work!
What rod length do you recommend in the Dobyns Sierra Trout & Panfish? They vary from 7' 9" all the way down to 6' 2". In general, could you maybe explain the role that rod length can play for an ultra-light rod? Also is there any performance benefit to a single piece rod verses a multiple piece rod?
The longer the length the farther you can cast but they're also a little more whippy or noodle like. The shorter the rod, the more accurate you can cast and it's better in creeks and streams where they're bushes around you.
What he said ^^^ Personally, I have found that 6' range rods are my favorite for versatility with ultralight fishing. I have been insanely curious about the longer Dobyns though because I have a feeling they don't get whippy and they are likely great options. Maybe I will scoop one up at some point. As far as 1 or 2 piece goes, the only major watchout I have is that the multi-piece rods can sometimes come apart or twist a bit so the guides are off-center. Otherwise, I don't see much of a difference in sensitivity or weight (despite what some folks might say). For the Dobyns, I have had a one and a two piece and they have performed identically.
Apparently in 2022 TFO is no longer being made in Korea anymore. I tried the new made in China ones and I was pretty disappointed…. Just ordered a 2 piece 6’6 presso so we’ll see how that performs.
I was not aware they changed manufacturing facilities. I am honestly unsure where the rods I have were made but I assume Korea based on timing. Thanks for calling it out, maybe I should see if I can get my hands on a brand new one to compare.
Not what I wanted to read after just buying the TFO Trout-Panfish today (has the made in China sticker on the butt). Had both the Procyon and the TFO in my hand while watching this video in the aisle. 😂 Now I feel like I should have gone with the Procyon.
Thank you for your videos and great content I just ordered the Sierra dobins 6.2 and I'm going to pair it w the new Shimano Marivel 1000 this is for my own Christmas gift can wait to try them.
Great video! I usually do shore fishing so casting discance is very imporant. With that being said should i go with a 6'6" rod or 7" to maximize the casting distance? What else would you reccomend?
The line is going to help you just as much with casting as the rod length, so I’d say don’t skimp on the line you choose. As for the rod length, I would say either length will be fine. Try to find a rod that isn’t too whippy or noodly and you should be good to go. Lmk if you have a specific budget and I’ll do my best to help point you in the right direction.
@@FishAnything I believe it will! I am going to do a "Ultralight Fishing Series" on my channel in early spring and this has guided me in the right direction!
Love your channel I would see you test ultralight & light ice fishing rods and reels spinning and inline. I would also like to find out if anyone makes a decent ultralight and light bait casting rod & reel and see your test. Thanks
Thank you for the suggestion! I will definitely keep this in mind this season. I am by no means an ice fishing expert but I could probably go over my setups and talk about what I like/don't like.
Nice video dude! The Daiwa Presso is the best Ultra Light/Light powered rod on the market in my opinion. Lengths ranging from 4’ to 11’ and like you showcased it even comes in a 4-piece travel model with a real nice case. For the money, I don’t think you can beat the Presso series. I have 3, a 4’, 6’, and an 8’. All of them perform above their price point. I’m thinking about getting the 11’ foot next.
@@emidyl24 Yeah, the 11’ is definitely beefier than the other lengths. You’d probably need a size 2000/2500 reel to balance it out nicely. I work in an a outdoor store and have the privilege of handling a lot of product and I was actually considering the 11’ as an ultralight steelhead rod. I’m not too sure about that thought quite yet though.
@@okish02 They cast far enough for me. The longest casting line type for these rods is definitely mono though. A super braid type line works well if you put a little weight behind it but for extremely light offerings, mono has been best for me when casting distance is a concern.
I have a tfo fly rod but had no idea they had made an ultralight spinning rod until your video. I picked one up based on your recommendation, and it's the only rod I've used since I got it in August. Thanks for all the great info!
Great video I’m going to get the Temple fork but I’m curious as to why you aren’t using braid and leader on it does the mono cast better or just personal preference?
I have a video idea that will get a ton of views. An ultra light pocket fishing kit. Just a small box with whatever you'd take if limited to pockets and one rod/reel.
What's a good all arounder for trout, panfish, crappy, sandbass or white bass, like for creek and river fishing, I was thinking about like a 7ft light fast action.
Your videos have inspired me to get into ultralight fishing. I got a panfish magnet kit and some light inline spinners to start. Just got the shipping notification fromMule Fishing so I’m excited to try that stuff next week when our neighborhood pond gets stock with trout next week!
@@The_Next_Cast I’m going to use the lures and gonna put my 4 yo daughter on some powerbait for the stockers. She’ll probably outfish me but the worst day of fishing is better than the best day in the office.
Down here in the south not much beats a beetle spin, it’s another cheap lure to try, also if your in Walmart keep an eye out for a keystone jig by renowsky. All the information on ultra light fishing from RUclips channels like this have really helped the hobby.
I have been using both the sam heaton super sensitive and celilo 9 footer. You are right, the longer doesn't necessarily mean the further/better. But the fight, is so much funner. You can control the fish coming in a lot better. If I had to do it over, I would of gotten the 8 footer, buddy has the celilo 8', and it cast 10ft further,.
Hello from Chicago. I stumbled upon your channel a couple weeks ago through Burly’s page and I have definitely become a fan of your videos and reviews! Good stuff! I have since added a couple 13 Defy Silvers to my growing arsenal. I’m gearing up for a Canadian trip in June with family and needed a couple ultralights to bring in case I wanted to find some perch…I also hear the bluegill are giant up there! I also picked up a Lew’s laser 6’0” ultralight and it seems pretty good. Have you had a chance to check one out?
Just ordered some donkey tails for ice fishing super excited for that but I had a question regarding a new combo. I have a 5'9 lews mach lite speed stick Ive been using for the past year for trout fishing but wanted a slightly heavier set up for light tackle passing in the spring or to target larger trout. I want to get the Daiwa Revros LT 2500 and get a Light 13 Fishing Defy Silver rod. I just wanted your opinion on the 6'6 or 7ft version, and should I get it in a 1 or 2 piece? Im leaning more towards 6'6 because I feel like that's sufficient but maybe 7ft is better for fishing ponds/lakes and targeting better sized fish. I also travel by car to all spots and there's limited room so maybe a 2 piece is the way to go. Can you assist me at all? Love the vids btw, thank you!
Thank you so much! I agree with your gut feeling - I would go for the 6'6 2pc based on your style of fishing. I think that sounds like a great setup for what you're looking to do.
@@FishAnything Thank you I just ordered the 6'6 2 piece. Would you recommend pairing it with a 2500 Daiwa Revros LT or a 2000 Piscifun Carbon X? Sorry I'm just indecisive and appreciate your feedback? Love the vids man
@@calvintron3335 If you have the money you should find a 19' Vanquish C2000S or C2000SHG. Thant's what I have on mine. IMO, the best Ultralight reel out there!
Hi there Ethan, what an awesome video. I came across your channel just the other day and have been really enjoying your content. On this topic of Rods do you have any thoughts on the Ugly Stik Elite Series 5' ? I am based in South Africa and I am bit limited for choice of ultralight rods but the ugly stick is one of them. Apparently this is an upgrade from the GX2 series. I'll be mostly using it for small crankbaits, spoons, and plastic jigs. I am also trying to figure out what category that falls in... entry levels, mid-level, etc and if it is comparable to any of the rods you reviewed in this video? Appreciate any advice here and thanks again for the great content. .
Thanks so much for the support! Sorry for the delayed response. Ugly stiks are just fine, but I definitely would avoid their long models. The 5’ rod should do pretty well for you. They are definitely a low range rod but they will catch plenty of fish. Typically, my biggest complaint would be the feel of them is softer than a standard graphite rod which will be faster in action and likely more sensitive.
Great review! I own all of the rods you reviewed except the Kage. I like the TFO over the Dobyns but just slightly. And I agree the 13 Fishing Defy is a fantastic rod for the money!
Really enjoyed your video. I’m looking for a fast action rod as well that I can use for trout fishing. I like trout magnets and Berkley power worms and salmon eggs. Looking for something $100 or less. I like 5 1/2 length. I don’t like a real whippie rod. Is the 13 fishing too stout? Thanks
I think the 13 Fishing Defy Silver is the way to go. If you want something a little softer, the Temple Fork would be fine too. Personally though, I think you can get away with the slightly faster taper on the 13. Just be cognizant of how you set your drag and I would also recommend mono to help provide some "cushion" due to the stretch.
I appreciate the video, and I can't wait to see future reviews. Quick question, have you ever heard of Ray's Rods? They are customs (Ultra Light) Rods that can be purchased online.
I have an odd question. I fished a lot as a kid with family that didn't really teach me about rods and tackle (I don't think they really knew much, we had big and small stuff all over the place) and when I got back into fishing 1.5 years ago, I immediately went towards Ultralight and have been fishing that way since, 5"6' UL, 2000-size reel, 4lb. test. If I want to step one level up from my UL to throw heavier lures and use heavier line, what is the category? Light? Medium?
Good question! I think going with a Medium power will be what you are looking for. The light is very similar to an ultralight so it won't be a big enough change. A typical Medium rod is rated for much larger lures so you should have a lot of applications covered with that.
Any ultralight rod should have zero issue casting those baits. Check out this video for micro lure casting tips: ruclips.net/video/31saZRQHoBI/видео.html
Are you going to get the new Daiwa MQ spinning reel and do a review? By the way the Okuma guide select pro and the Phenix elixir are two rods you need to get your hands on for sure!
Ultralights can withstand plenty of big fish if you have your drag set properly on your reel and know how to fight a fish. I’ve caught carp, catfish, pike, etc etc and it’s all about playing them correctly and not horsing them.
What would you say is the fastest tipped rod you use for panfish? I prefer a fast tip that isn't whippy I've only found one I liked but that was like 9 yrs ago and I ended up leaving it on the bank while catching bait for catfis and I cant remember what it was tbh. I own a ton of dobyns bass rods but I noticed with those they seem to over rate the power of the rods. So I'm not to sure on the Sierra series panfish rod. Thanks.
Thank you for these reviews. I've been looking into Temple Fork Trout & Panfish. I already have 7 and 7'2 rods. I would be using the rod in rivers and big deep lakes. Would the 5'6 be enough? Or would you recommend going 6ft? Thanks again!
Everyone has a different definition of mid range prices, but I’d say a few to look at would be the Temple Fork, Daiwa Presso, BPS Panfish Elite, and Daiwa Procyon.
I had one back in the day and didn’t love it, but I think that’s because I had the 7’ model. I’ve used the 4pc travel Presso in a 5’6 length and loved it.
Hope you answer this but I'm running 1000 size reels looking for a ultralight rod that can throw all types of baits like micro crank baits to a 1/16 oz jig head with micro swim baits I have the okuma celilo but looking to upgrade to some thing a little better but only have around $35-$40 what are a couple I could look at
For the $35-40 price, I am not sure you will get much better than the Celilo. Or at least, I haven't personally tested anything for that range better. I think you would be better off trying to sell your Celilo and add the $40 to whatever you get and try to get a Bass Pro Panfish Elite. That rod is $80 but I bet if you timed things right, you could get it on a deal since BPS tends to run a lot of promotions. If not that, you could go for a 13 Fishing Defy Silver. It might be a bit fast for some of the micro trebled baits but I think it would still work pretty good!
They are both a little noodly. I’d recommend staying in their shorter models to avoid too much whippiness. The longer rods get more whippy for both of these options.
Thank you, Ethan. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Great video and some solid recommendations. I can see it in your eyes, though: You may be talking ultralight, but you just cannot wait to get out there for some ice fishing. Right? RIGHT? 🤣🤣🤣
What’s the difference from extra ultra light vs super ultra light and Ultra light rod ? Can you review favorite fishing Yampa river spinning rod plz!!!
Honestly it is mostly just titles. Technically it should be based on how much pressure causes the rod to flex. So an Extra UL should be even lower power than a standard Ultralight. But I think an Extra and Super are basically the same thing. I have never tried that one but I will look into it! I think I would dislike it though because they are Slow action so they would be super noodly.
Also, I have bought some rods online from waveinn which I think ships out of Netherlands. I got a Nomura branded UL that I'm enjoying, not that I have anywhere near the amount of experience as you.
No Ugly Stiks? I have 2, both 5'. Pretty limber, but work well. Bought one new for about $45. The other one at a swap meet for $2 (with a small spinning reel)
I’ve been looking at the BuCoo and I have an elite that I will be reviewing soon. So far, it’s a good rod but I’m not sure it’s quite the bend I’m looking for. Has a bit of a whippiness to it, I prefer them more “stout” feeling.
It is definitely a fast rod so it is best for single hooked baits, however you should still be fine with the trebles. I would go with monofilament to add a little "cushion" with the stretch.
Haven’t used a ton of JDM rods but the ones which I have used, I have loved. I feel like it’s more likely to get a great rod from the JDM market whereas you have to comb through a lot domestically.
I bought the Daiwa Presso rod and absolutely loved it. Then the tip broke........ Daiwa stated they could not replace the tip and that I would need to send them back the rod at my expense and then they would sell me a replacement at a "discounted price". Very disappointed as I now have a beautiful Daiwa Presso rod with a broken tip.
Thank you for these reviews and your replies trying to help people out. I used your Amazon link to pick up a couple of Daiwa Revros’s (2000,2500) the Celilo 6’ UL, and a Daiwa Excelor lt1000. From what I’ve read the 2000 is the same reel as the lt1000 but with a larger spool. It weighs nearly the same anyway. I’m putting a order together for some mule jigs and really like that Dakota sunrise color. I have most of my catches on a hot pink twister tail for crappie here in central New York.
Hi Ethan I watched your video budget ultra lights one that peaked my interest was the shimano senseilite so I ordered the 6’6” shimano senseilite which you mentioned you would have liked to try so I’ve tried it and for a budget ultra lite rod I love it it’s awesome my biggest fish I cought was a pound n a half to a pound n three quarters it was a sheeps head or drum here they are referred as sheeps head I diegress the shimano senseilite handled that fish so we’ll budget rod worth every penny
Some of these rods are literally being shipped to my house as we speak. Super pumped
Can't wait to hear your thoughts on them. I think you will love the two you are getting :)
Just wanted to say I found your videos while researching an UL setup to fish the jigs I've been making, ended up buying the TFO panfish/trout rod and I absolutely love it.
Thanks so much for watching :) Glad you found a rod you love. Can't go wrong with that TFO!
Thank you Ethan, great review and you brought it down to that basic level, so all watching will understand your perspective on each rod.
Thank you Dennis :)
Thanks so much, David! Same to you :) Hope you eat lots of tasty food and spend time with your favorite people.
Great video Ethan, love the step up price point presentation. I wouldn't recommend a rod that I haven't used and you have the same approach. You broke it down honest and straight forward for us. Many thanks and God bless
Thank you Brian :) Glad you appreciated the video. Hope you have a great Christmas :)
@@FishAnything And a very Merry Christmas to you and your family Ethan
Great video I always enjoy your Rod videos. I hope you do one on reels next.
I found that if your ultralight rod is too fast, use mono line. It will become a lot more forgiving. Specially for spinner, swim bait etc.
I definitely agree that mono is a great way to add a "cushion" for super fast ultralights. Great point!
I picked up some of your lures and heads can't wait to test them out I wish you had a variety pack that were like a sampler pack
Thank you so much! Maybe someday I will have a variety kit. It is very labor-intensive at this time to try to do something like that so it isn't a current possibility. That being said, as Mule scales and I have additional resources, it is definitely a priority.

That’s what I’m looking at but I want a 6 foot hmx
@@sidneyhunt926 the 6 foot would be a excellent option I'm probably gonna get a 9ft for steelhead fishing soon
That settles it! I need to test the HMX :)
I have the TFO in the 6' and 6'6" and love them but 13 fishing Defy Silver is an amazing rod for the price. I like them so much I now have 6 spinner's. The 5'6", 6'6" and 7' UL and two 6'6" light. Great video .
The 13 Fishing Defy Silver is such a steal for that price. And the TFO is super versatile. Tight lines Philip.
It’s such a sick little rod! Glad you like it.
@@FishAnything What length presso do you recommend to cast 1/64 oz with the farthest?
are you familiar with the Daiwa regal line?
Awesome! That is a great rod/reel combo right there. TFO makes a really nice product, and a Stradic is awfully hard to beat from a reel standpoint.
I have the okuma celilo in 6 ft and its my go to jig and bobber rod with 2 lb test. I use my 13 fishing defy silver 6 1/2 ft for casting jigs and small crank baits and have 4 lb mono on it. 👊👍
Sounds like you have two great setups!
Eastport E series has a $39 bfs rod I paired with my Aldebaran and caught 10 pound chammel cats and big bass. It comes with a medium heavy and a medium rod tip. 7ft 2-piece rods.. not to mention Kastking makes fantastic telescopic rods for $54
They're not ultralight though. This video is about the ultralight rods. Thanks for the input though I'll be looking into them.
Thanks for the heads up. I will keep those in mind for other types of fishing.
Hope all is well :)
Let's get out on the ice this winter if we get a chance.
I might have to check it out. Thank you Lanny!
The major craft finetail area stage rod is a very great for the money, you should try the baitcast version I think it’s the B58UL-2 for panfishing all the way to trout is pretty nice and fun
Maybe someday! Majorcraft makes cool stuff!!
Thank you! Happy to hear you enjoy the videos :) tight lines!
Hey great video!! Been binging lots of your videos as I am trying to make a good trout setup. Have you ever heard or used Lamiglas Panfish and Trout? Very curious about it. Thanks again for all these great vids!
Ooohhh I should try this! I’ve always wanted to use a lamiglas. Thanks for the suggestion.
Ethan,
Great video! Nice breakdown of different ultralight rods.
Also hope to see a review of Eurotackle’s new nano spinning rod rated at 1/64 ounce to 1/8. As always great reviews and ultralight fish tips. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Steve! I will have to give that one a look.
What he said ^^^
Personally, I have found that 6' range rods are my favorite for versatility with ultralight fishing.
That would be awesome! The one I got recently had a made in China sticker on it btw
Ohhhh baby! Sounds like you are going to have one nice setup for next year. Tight lines Benjamin :)
Great Ultralight Rod review! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you :) Hope it helps
Good point - I sometimes forget just how great the Presso is. I have a new 6' travel Presso in my room as we speak :)
I own the 7'6" and like you love the line up. However, I ordered the 11' and it is built like a heavy duty steelhead rod. Def was not expecting that
Does it cast far?
@@emidyl24
Yeah, the 11’ is definitely beefier than the other lengths. You’d probably need a size 2000/2500 reel to balance it out nicely. I work in an a outdoor store and have the privilege of handling a lot of product and I was actually considering the 11’ as an ultralight steelhead rod. I’m not too sure about that thought quite yet though.
@@okish02
They cast far enough for me. The longest casting line type for these rods is definitely mono though. A super braid type line works well if you put a little weight behind it but for extremely light offerings, mono has been best for me when casting distance is a concern.
I just found the piscifun ul. I will let you know when I fish it finally. Love winter. Tightlines
Hope it works well for you! Keep me posted :) Tight lines!
I have a tfo fly rod but had no idea they had made an ultralight spinning rod until your video. I picked one up based on your recommendation, and it's the only rod I've used since I got it in August. Thanks for all the great info!
Happy to hear you're enjoying it! Tight lines, Nathan.
Great info as always. Going to put this to work on some of those gift cards
Gotta go find me a rod tube! Thanks T :)
Congratulation Bud!

UL 4 LIFE! :)
Great video I’m going to get the Temple fork but I’m curious as to why you aren’t using braid and leader on it does the mono cast better or just personal preference?
I prefer braid to a leader on the TFO. I’m just constantly swapping stuff around.
@@FishAnything Thanks so much for the responses! Love the channel always loved fishing you definitely got me back into it!
I have a video idea that will get a ton of views. An ultra light pocket fishing kit. Just a small box with whatever you'd take if limited to pockets and one rod/reel.
I have thought about this idea as well. I will try to throw something together :) Thanks for the feedback!
What's a good all arounder for trout, panfish, crappy, sandbass or white bass, like for creek and river fishing, I was thinking about like a 7ft light fast action.
I would go with the Temple Fork for all around. If you want something a little higher end, I like the Dobyns Trout & Panfish
Your videos have inspired me to get into ultralight fishing. I got a panfish magnet kit and some light inline spinners to start. Just got the shipping notification fromMule Fishing so I’m excited to try that stuff next week when our neighborhood pond gets stock with trout next week!
Oh heck yeah! So happy you're getting into it. Thanks for the support. Keep me posted on how the gear works for you :)
That's awesome! Good luck and tight lines while fishing for those trout!
@@The_Next_Cast I’m going to use the lures and gonna put my 4 yo daughter on some powerbait for the stockers. She’ll probably outfish me but the worst day of fishing is better than the best day in the office.
@@JToona I absolutely agree and that memory your making with her will be priceless!
I just got a long rod to play with. I will eventually get a 8+ though. Sounds like a blast!
Thank you so much for the support, John! My apologies for the delayed response. I have not used that one yet but will have to check it out!
Love the vids man
also what size, i was thinking 1000 on the Revros as well.
@@calvintron3335 If you have the money you should find a 19' Vanquish C2000S or C2000SHG. Thant's what I have on mine. IMO, the best Ultralight reel out there!
Thanks for the rod reviews . Which Dobyns length/ model is your favorite?
I have only fished the 6'2 which is a great stick. I would like to try the longer models though. I have a feeling the 6'7 is a sick rod.
If you had to choose one size of rod what would you go with 5, 6, or 7ft range?
6’ has been my most versatile length!
Great review! I own all of the rods you reviewed except the Kage. I like the TFO over the Dobyns but just slightly. And I agree the 13 Fishing Defy is a fantastic rod for the money!
Sounds like you and I have the same style! Tight lines Jon :)
I have heard of them a few times and have contemplated purchasing but just never went through with it. Maybe will get one in the future though!
I'm looking for a rod to cast a ultralight 1/32oz zman micro trd and a 1/16 oz rooster tail but I'm having such a issue finding rods able to cast it
Any ultralight rod should have zero issue casting those baits.
I will definitely look into all of those! I don't typically do spinning reel reviews for a few reasons but maybe I will pick one up :)
@@FishAnything awesome love your videos can't wait for the next one 🍻🎣
I’ve got to say I am impressed by the high quality old 18 suppressor UL
I will definitely look into this :) did you say you have the 7' length?
@@FishAnything yes I don’t think they have a longer one
Have ya tried the st.croix pan fish rod?
I tried the old model and it felt a little tip heavy but otherwise solid. I need to try their newer model.
How much force can ultralight handle? Like can it handle a pike?
Ultralights can withstand plenty of big fish if you have your drag set properly on your reel and know how to fight a fish. I’ve caught carp, catfish, pike, etc etc and it’s all about playing them correctly and not horsing them.
So I’ve watched a lot of your reviews and I’m really curious is to what your favorite ultra light rod is?
Watch til the end 😜
Dobyns Sierra Trout & Panfish!
Which rod would you pick if you could only have one? I want one for trout fishing in the mountains.
If you are primarily trout fishing, I would probably go for the Temple Fork Trout & Panfish. Can't go wrong.
Thanks. I have an old model ( White Pearl Colored ) Stradic 1000 that needs a rod.
Thanks.
I like the Sierra. I think it’s great for panfish! It bends plenty once you hook a respectable fish.
Thank you for these reviews. I've been looking into Temple Fork Trout & Panfish. I already have 7 and 7'2 rods. I would be using the rod in rivers and big deep lakes. Would the 5'6 be enough? Or would you recommend going 6ft? Thanks again!
Kind of depends on how you’re fishing but I’d probably go for the added length with the 6’ model. The rod butt is much more comfortable too
i have a budget 60$ what do you recommend for trout and panfish
I would go with a 13 Fishing Defy Silver for that price
Kindly.kist the names of the rods in the mid range. Good morning.
Everyone has a different definition of mid range prices, but I’d say a few to look at would be the Temple Fork, Daiwa Presso, BPS Panfish Elite, and Daiwa Procyon.
Fenwick Eagle needs to be in there. I believe it's my favorite. Out of what I have and used anyway.
It’s a great rod but I tend to prefer fast action for the style of fishing I do.
@@FishAnythingI lost about 3" on mine , but it works well with micro crankbaits.
In europe if you are on shoestring budget you can get the Mitchell Epic R and RZ for the money(20-30€) they are very good.
Heck yeah, thank you for adding this information for other folks who might see this.
question: i'm trying to get into BFS. is there a type of BFS rod I have to get or just a ultralight rod will pair with a BFS reel?
Basically any casting rod that is a Light or Ultralight power will work!
Have you thought about 2 piece Diawa presso UL.
I had one back in the day and didn’t love it, but I think that’s because I had the 7’ model. I’ve used the 4pc travel Presso in a 5’6 length and loved it.
I want to buy a slow or moderate action UL rod, which one do you recommend?
Honestly I haven't used any slow and very few Moderate. I liked the Fenwick Eagle which was more of a moderate load.
I appreciate that I'm using the celilo I'll just get the 13 fishing if ya think that could do it
UR right about that them daiwa press pack rods they are awesome and the TFO rod is worth every penny
Both of those rods are high on my list. Love them!
Does the Celilo or Shakespeare micro lite have a faster action?
They are both a little noodly. I’d recommend staying in their shorter models to avoid too much whippiness. The longer rods get more whippy for both of these options.
Thank you, Ethan. Happy Holidays to you and your family. Great video and some solid recommendations. I can see it in your eyes, though: You may be talking ultralight, but you just cannot wait to get out there for some ice fishing. Right? RIGHT? 🤣🤣🤣
Haha something like that! Honestly I just want to be fishing in general. The weather is already driving me nuts! Thank you as always, Bob :)
Any experience with BnM Lelands TCB rod with was designed to cast and jig a 1/64 oz. Trout Magnet?
Haven't ever tried it but will keep my eyes out for one!
Thank you man. Really appreciate your reviews and insights.

@@FishAnything Cool thx - can you explain slow action -sorry for the questions- I am trying to find a good trout rod for the next trout season.
Have you used the Fenwick HMG.
I haven’t yet, but I’ll have to add it to the list!
Also, I have bought some rods online from waveinn which I think ships out of Netherlands. I got a Nomura branded UL that I'm enjoying, not that I have anywhere near the amount of experience as you.
So many good rods available internationally. The United States doesn't seem to have the same taste in UL rod specs as other countries though.
No Ugly Stiks? I have 2, both 5'. Pretty limber, but work well. Bought one new for about $45. The other one at a swap meet for $2 (with a small spinning reel)
Swap meet for $2 is hard to beat!
@@FishAnything Yes. Bought a tiny Pflueger President to use with it last week. I think it will be perfect for Bluegill, etc.
Have you ever fished with a Falcon BuCoo ultralight rod or a Fenwick elite finesse rod? If so, what are your thoughts on them?
I’ve been looking at the BuCoo and I have an elite that I will be reviewing soon. So far, it’s a good rod but I’m not sure it’s quite the bend I’m looking for. Has a bit of a whippiness to it, I prefer them more “stout” feeling.
Is the Dobyns stp suitable for small treble hooks like roostertails and small crankbaits?
It is definitely a fast rod so it is best for single hooked baits, however you should still be fine with the trebles. I would go with monofilament to add a little "cushion" with the stretch.
I have the Dobyns 6'2" and it's a great rod for jigs but the TFO 6' or 6'6" UL would be a better option for moving baits.
Thank you for all the great views! Imma have to go get me myself a bobyns sierra rod now.
I think you will love it! Thanks :)
Penn pursuit or fierce combo light , medium light and change the reel to daiwa legalis or shimano nasci.
Those rods are becoming legends
I’ll have to look into them! Thanks
I would to see your ultralight rod review from Japan; on how it compares to the domestic market.
Haven’t used a ton of JDM rods but the ones which I have used, I have loved. I feel like it’s more likely to get a great rod from the JDM market whereas you have to comb through a lot domestically.
What was the length of the dobyan
I fish the 6'2 model but have been meaning to try a longer model too.
What is best rod tor casting ultra light lures far?
I can't say there is a "best" necessarily. I find that low diameter line is the most important piece to the puzzle.
Sorry to hear that - I currently have a broken Dobyns I am trying to decide what to do with!
Just curious - Have you fished the Santiam Ultralight 5'-6" 3-piece?
No I have not but I’ll try it if I ever get a chance!
Do you have the Daiwa Infeet range in the US? They have I think a 7 and 7'6 model both with .5-5g casting.
Never heard of it! I will have to keep my eyes out.
I bought the Defy silver 6.6 ultralight and seems like more like a lite rod.
Yeah they are definitely fast action so they almost seem heavier power. But once you hook fish, I think you’ll find the ratings are accurate.
Wow, Michael, I really really appreciate your support! Thanks my friend. Reach out anytime if I can help further.
Almost bkught a defy silver i found on clearence, never heard of it so i didnt but it felt good. Guess i should've
Great little rod!
What is your thoughts on the fenwick Eagle now?
Still a great option! I would personally use this for more of a trout stick because of the moderate taper. Fenwick makes awesome stuff.
I think I'm going to get the 6ft celilo with the plfuegger president 25
That will be a good setup!!
No uglistiks? Can you maybe do a video on some of these?
I’ve been meaning to for a long time! Thanks for the feedback.
Thank you Ethan one I was looking for appropriate your content
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you Joseph!
Hi Ethan, I'm in the UK and I'm after a cheap but good ultra lightweight combo set up so I can get my grandson into fishing. Can you help please. Paul
Since you’re in the UK, I can’t say for sure what is available in your area. I believe Mitchell may have some options?
Just wondered if you have tried the Artemis X ultra light rod? I think it’s a foreign rod I keep seeing on eBay and looks so nice. Around 50$
Never heard of it but I will check it out!
Awesome! I am so happy to hear you are enjoying the setup :) Get out there and keep catching fish my friend :)
What about a baitcasting rod?
What about them? I use them for bass primarily while this was more of a ultralight spinning rod focused video.
thanks for this .... would any of these be more appropriate for ned rig ? thinking of zman micro ,,on 1/15 oz and 1/10 oz schroom head. ...many thanks
Id consider stepping up to a Light model. That gear is a bit on the heavier side for a true ultralight blank so it may feel better on a stronger rod.
