As a bank fisherman I always start off with a small jig 1/64 or 1/32 oz under a float with either a gulp minnow or donkey tail jr. That usually always prevents the skunk then spend the rest of my time using and experimenting with other techniques. Thank you Ethan for your videos you are the one that has gotten me addicted to ultra light fishing!!!!
@@travisnorton7194 I use the 2-1/2" gulp minnow and if needed I'll cut a 1/2" or 3/4" off if they keep striking the tail and are not eating the hook. I like using the 2-1/2" instead of the 1" because it will usually prevent the really small ones from hitting it and bass will hit the 2-1/2" size. The 1" will catch a ton of fish but you'll get a lot of dinky ones. 1" is good to use for kids so they keep catching something
I hate gulp baits they are so nasty, the whole point I use a jig is so I don't have to touch nasty nightcrawlers 🤢. You should try the Bobby Garland jigs, I love the Black licorice color, monkey milk, Blue Thunder, Twilight and so on.
A great video explaining everything! I’m just an old guy…70, getting back into fishing … thanks big time Plus it seems you have lots of great followers… best to everyone, let’s catch some fish and have a great time on the water 👍😎😄
You definitely need to try it! And yeah, it always drives me nuts when I watch someone that just pushes their stuff the entire time. I fish my stuff because I believe in it but I will never say that there aren't other good companies out there too. Good to have a variety :)
Thank you for your video. You speak with high intelligence backed by obvious experience. I've watched countless other videos with hosts who explain nothing about how they're fishing or what techniques they use. I'll continue to watch your videos so I can become better. Thank you!

Please continue to find the time and energy to put out this type of content 🙏 I also made an order for your products, so good on you Sir!
Glad to see you back on with some great tips . I went down to the river today and looked it over lots of ice on it but running hard . But it was a nice day in the 30’s got my blood pumping for spring and the day I can get out the mule jigs and pop the the small mouth 😎🎣🇺🇸
I love this channel. I got into ultralight fishing big around a year ago. I learned so much from these videos and everything dude has suggested works. It's been a blast. Every catch is so much fun. Thanks for the material and tips. You're a hoot buddy.
I love these videos because I felt guilty and stupid for using them on the water’s edge. Most fishermen here use a single jig or a dropshot while I try to find what makes a better selection so I’ve combined a jig as a weight for my dropshot and a foot or so higher a single hook for a soft bait( creature or a small ribbed gummy worm). Sometimes I just decide to use the jig leaving the small hook free as I’ve thought it’s invisible. My surprise was that there were times I’ve got more fish on the free hook than on the jig itself. The fish have an insane visual perception under the water.
I'd like to see you do a video on your yellow kayak. It looks fun and not a lot of trouble. Love all your videos on ultra light fishing, keep them coming!
I just got back into fishing after a 25-year break. I am now a disabled veteran. I learned quickly to go out with a small box of pre-made jig rigs to attach to a swivel. It works for me. I'll look up your products.
@@FishAnything With my injuries, I have to be able to change lures/rigs easily. Nerve damage sometimes makes it difficult to tie knots. Tighlines and full strings friend.
I got one of those tfo ultralight rods because of you and I love it, I use it all the time for bream and trout, great rod, thanks for the recommendation!!!!
Must apologize right off the bat as I have not been hitting the like button or subscribed yet but that has to change as I am addicted to watching you catch such beautiful albeit small fish but the enthusiasm and fun you have going about it is awesome!
All of my favorites for ultralight fishing spare 1, the tiny inline spinners. Another great video Ethan. I love using a variation of the drop shot and some old crappie double rigs. Although for live bait it gave me the double jig idea before I saw it years ago. I try to start my newbie with slip floats, ice jigs and wax worms to get familiar with it. And buddy if I've got 1 then it's probably 50 varied ultralight crankbaits..Rebel, Rapala, Yozuri, Matzuo, tiny lipless rattling baits. You hit a home run with me on this one. What a blast!!!
I am so glad I found your channel through John Dalton. You have an amazing speaking voice, which makes your videos so much more fun to watch. The way you explain everything in a way we can all understand is so refreshing. And i love your lures as well. Keep up the great work Ethan!!
Just discovered this channel, can’t remember who referred me it may have been DEBO. I’m loving the info you put in ur vids, very informative and are already helping me!
That Rebel “Crickhopper” is crazy good. It is the best fishing, ugly, hard bait out there. If the float rig gets you fly fishing I am all for it 😂 “Spring is Coming”
Haha love it! That little bait is definitely a bit ugly but it sure is a fun bait to fish. I look forward to tossing it around in the evening this summer.
Awesome technique tips video. My order from mule arrived yesterday with a beautiful array of jigs and plastic my new 13 fishing ultralight arrived aswell so I'm ready to go. Time to scratch that itch. Tight lines Ethan.
Thank you for the great tips, Ethan. The micro drop shot has been very good for me; I also use 1/8 weight. Was surprised the micro Ned rig was not more prominently mentioned in this video; that's another one I have been playing with. I grew up fishing double (sometimes triple) jigs on the saltwater grass flats; fun days indeed. Just wait till a largemouth and a pike each grab one of those jigs. Game on. Hoping that you and yours have a happy, safe and prosperous 2022.
My go to bfs UL technique is a size 4 or 2 EWG hook and soft plastic in the 3-4” range. Plastic could be a finesse or drop shot worm, a TRD or a micro creature bait. Weight of the hook and soft plastic creates a very slow/natural fall to the bottom and usually get inhaled on the initial fall. Produces in heavily pressured fisheries. Great vid Ethan!!
My favorite by far are micro crank baits! It amazes me how small a fish will take it. Also in my opinion more fun than throwing a cast net for live bait for nighttime cat fishing at the camp site. Great video, looking forward to trying the vertical technique... Eat, sleep, fish!
Love the ultra light drop shot, had great success with it last season. Found out about switching out the weight with a need rig right when ice showed up, dying for spring to get here to try it out.
I have thought about that but I typically avoid it because I feel it is more natural to just use one bait when fishing a slow presentation. I might have to experiment a bit this year with that!
great info. TY. you are correct, brother... catching Alt..croakers in the lagoon is pro angler fun even if it's a tiny fish....ultras are just plain fun.
Loved this video. As I have gotten more into fishing after retirement, I'm always looking for new ideas and techniques. I'm adding a double jig to this year's fishing. With Santa's help, I now find myself skewed towards ultralight rigs which I had lots of fun with especially last summer. Fishing a new pond with an ul rig and expecting panfish or maybe a small bass, I unexpectedly landed (seemed to take forever) a 24 inch channel catfish. It was a blast.
Oh boy a 24" catfish must have been a riot on an UL! And I am so happy to hear you are enjoying the videos and the style of fishing. Lots of fun UL content planned for this season :)
I always have an ultralight rig with me on my kayak but have tended to use it as a backup in case my other rigs aren't producing. I'm gonna concentrate more this year on the ultralight stuff, and I appreciate these tips :). We're facing a week of at or below zero temps up here in Minnesota this week...can't wait for spring!
Always smart to have one ready when the larger species aren't cooperating. But yeah, I would love if you gave it more time this year. I have done so and man, I love it so much! Cheers to a lot of donkeys this spring :)
The double jig makes so much sense and I have flirted with doing it but have felt it's a "naughty' technique. Also you can increase your casting distance but still get the benefit of a lighter presentation.
Just got my order of jigs and plastics from you! So stoked! You've help me decide on my ultralight setup, TFO 6"6 UL paired with a Daiwa regal LT 1000D, Sunline super mono 4lb, been having a blast with it so far, eventually will try 2lb line
Great video! 1/32 mule jig with DT jrs have caught me a lot of creek and lake fish this last season. Good advise with the rapala floating above weeds. I tried that once last season with good results.
That is awesome! Thanks again for supporting Mule - that really means a lot to me. What means even more, however, is the fact that the gear is working well for you!
I pulled a 22 pound catfish across a lake on 5 ft pole with 6lb line with no leader, took me about an hour to very slowly bring the fish in but after that I was completely ultralight fishing from then on out.
One additional method for floats....use a small clear bubble float, fill it halfway with water, put a small swivel on thebterminal side of the float and 5-6' (or 1.5x the depth of the water)of leader to a fly, streamer, or even small spinner. I've used this in creeks, rivers, and lakes with great success. The best is a pistol pete fly with a small spinner on the front. Its a trout slayer, and ive caught plenty of sunfish and bass too. Its one setup for multiple bait choices and scenarios. Add a top and bottom bobber stop, and you can get really creative with fishing depths, obstacle avoidance, and ecen use the current in a stream to pull your lures and keep them out of the rocks.
On a Canadian fishing trip last year I used a 6 ft medium light rod with 4 lb test mono, a 3/16 oz jig with 2 in gulp minnow and out fished all 3 of my buddies for both smallmouth and walleyes. largest walleye was 28 in.! They all wanted my “magic minnows”.
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New happy Year's as well. When I do my trout fishing I always use ultralight gear, I think it's the best way ever. During the fall and cooler water and temperatures, I like to use the most lightest jigs that I can find. Like a 1/32 oz vmc crayfish pro series, 1/64 oz trout magnet or I'll use a Berkley powerbait 3 inch orange peel floating worm, using a 1/64 oz trout magnet jig head. It does work wonders. I'm so glad you did a video I was wondering if you were going to do one sometime soon. Great information, great video and I enjoyed watching too. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
In salt water we use something similar to the double jig rig, its called a sabiki rig. Might be worth looking into to mimic those little schools of baitfish.
Great video as always. I am so ready for spring so I can get out and do some fishing and try some of these techniques. Great job explaining and demonstrating the knots. thanks buddy
It's interesting that most of this methods would be illegal or borderline illegal in my country (mostly due to lawmakers being somehow out of touch and real problem with poachers). Great chanell anyway, I'm going back to fishing after 20 years and I build my self some nice light (but not ultralight) rig. Your videos are really helpfull.
I usually remove the split-ring and replace it with a Berkley Cros-Lok snap. With light line there's always a chance of getting your line nicked on the sharp ends of the split-ring and breaking a fish off.
Absolutely love this video. This guy is awesome. Love all them techniques. I’ve only been doing the style of Fishing for the last couple of years and I’ve got a lot to learn. it is the only method I now use. One thing is for sure though I will be putting some of these tips that you have shared into action in the next couple of weeks when I managed to get out fishing. Thanks so much for sharing and all the best to you and your family 😀👍🏽🎣
I really like your jig heads. I use them for most everything. Try tossing the treble hooks on your Rapala's and replace them with inline single hooks, especially with trout. One last, the wal-mart soft six pack cooler fits your packaging like they were made for your products.
Thank you so much Michael! And I have been meaning to try those little inline single hooks so I will try that. Lastly, I will have to look out for that cooler because that sounds like a good idea.
If you fish with a flurocarbon trace leader, these have a clip and spinning connection which makes changeover really easy, means you don't need to always re-tie if you are tight on time. I rarely tie the lures to the line anymore. No drop in catch rate either !
My favourite finesse jerkbait by far is the OSP Asura Durga. Comes with a magnetic weight transfer so at 4grams it flies like a bullet. Swims beautifully with a nice slalom whether you retrieve it fast or slow. You can jerk it aggressively, but whatI like to do is retrieve it extremely slowly, with a few quick jerks every 5 seconds. Any fish that sees it will follow and that sudden jerk makes it attack instinctively.
The Old Town Sportsman PDL 120 is a solid rig. To be honest, I chose it because I got it for free. But it is a dynamite rig for serious fishing trips. At this point, I would like to potentially exchange it for something about 30 lbs lighter but still featuring pedals. Not many options out there, but I would be willing to sacrifice stability/storage for speed and convenience of transport.
Love the tips! Any idea when the kahki hat will be in stock again? Biding my time in regards to ordering a bunch until I can snag thay sweet swag as well.
Been bugging my hat supplier about this but they keep pushing it back. Supply chain is a pain in the rear right now haha. I will keep trying to get it back in stock!
@@FishAnything oh I get that. I work in the environmental remediation field and have fought my share of supply issues for things like gloves. Thanks for all you do! Your channel has made me excited to go chasing things other than bass. Missouri Dept. of Conservation does a great job stocking rainbows all over the St. Louis area. Loving your videos for tips.
I am just trying to do some ultralight fishing I am looking at the lew's mr crappie 100 size spinning reel and I am just asking if it worth buying for ultralight fishing I am going to get some you baits after I get my check great information
Hmm I can't say I have used that specific reel but I would probably avoid it and go for a Shimano Sienna 1000 instead. Similar price range and I think it will do better for you.
Loved this content Ethan! I am learning a lot from you these days and have already had some success with the Horse Fly and Donkey Tail Jr. I am going to try the double jig rig next time out and I will let you know how it turns out!
This is a weird question; a lot of us transferred to or started with Ultralight fishing setups because of your content. Would you ever consider making a video or two about what setups to step up to with larger rods and tackle?
Yeah, definitely. That is a good suggestion! I have a lot of bass gear and ultralight gear but not a lot in the middle. I can talk about this at some point.
I use a variety of lines anywhere between 2-6lb. I would say 4lb mono is probably the most versatile but I often prefer 2lb to increase casting distance.
I have caught several bluegills over 9 inches on the DT Jr., so I can recommend it as a bait to target big 'gills.
I love it! Sounds like a good way to enjoy every trip :) Thanks as always for the support my friend.
What size gulp minnow ?
@@travisnorton7194 I use the 2-1/2" gulp minnow and if needed I'll cut a 1/2" or 3/4" off if they keep striking the tail and are not eating the hook. In salt water we use something similar to the double jig rig, its called a sabiki rig. Might be worth looking into to mimic those little schools of baitfish.
I’ll have to check it out thank you!
i just started UL fishing because i used a light setup and seen how fun it is
It is the best!
Great video as always. I am so ready for spring so I can get out and do some fishing and try some of these techniques. Great job explaining and demonstrating the knots. thanks buddy
Thanks T! I think you'll enjoy them. The double jig rig is such a fun one to fish. Hope you can double up on some fish this year :)
I would add ultralight underspins and beetle spins, especially for winter and early spring.
Good suggestion! Can't go wrong with those either :)
Love your content Brother 🤠. Thanks 🙏
Thank you Miguel :)
Great video! : )
Thank you Martin!
I usually remove the split-ring and replace it with a Berkley Cros-Lok snap. With light line there's always a chance of getting your line nicked on the sharp ends of the split-ring and breaking a fish off.
Interesting! I will have to try that out :)
Thanks for the best tips Budy🤙
Happy to help! Tight lines
Happy New Year Ethan!!! I can't wait to see the adventures you'll go on in 2022!!!
Thank you Michael :)
Love your videos dude!
Thank you Joel!!
John I really appreciate the kind words. Glad you are enjoying the content - tight lines out there :)
Good video
Thank you Michael!
So useful, thanks for the tips 👍
Hope you put them to use on some donkeys :)
I’m going to use the drop shot more this year. Great video Ethan. Thanks for sharing.
Go get them! Thank you :)
I've caught a fish on 4 out of 5 of these techniques. Still working on the UL jerkbait, but I'm confident I'll get it done!
Kan ay have a fishing rod spinning ultralight
Awesome! You will get it done this spring I bet :)
Plssss
Kan ay have a fishing rod spinning
Ive been addicted to ultralight fishing for a couple of years now. no matter where I go I usually have my ultralight with me
It is so much dang fun :)
Great content as always
Thank you very much Barry!
Great video as always Ethan. Working on a little something with the Donkey Tail(Jr) just to see if it works. Will send you a pic later.
Please do! Always like to hear how folks use the gear. Thanks for the kind words and support as always :)
This was SO informative! Subbed 👍
Thank you so much!
I definitely need to do #4 more often, can be so fun
Twitch twitch pause, pick the slack up and BAM
Great stuff, 😊
Thank you Vernon!
Thanks for the vid man, I don’t ice fish so…..this was needed lol.
Haha glad you enjoyed it! Hope you can get out there and find some open water soon :)
Great video thanks!
Thank you Alex :)
If you fish with a flurocarbon trace leader, these have a clip and spinning connection which makes changeover really easy, means you don't need to always re-tie if you are tight on time. I rarely tie the lures to the line anymore. No drop in catch rate either !
You need to look up the Zulu rig, it’s great for ultralight with two small minnows or tiny flukes. I use it a lot down here in Alabama
I will check this out, thank you!
thanks for the tips sir
Thanks for watching! Tight lines :)
Have you tried the t-knot for your double jig rigs? You’d probably be able to switch between jigs a lot easier with that knot.
Interesting! I will check it out. Thank you Carlos
Thoughts on other ultralight hardware? I found that small spoons and spinners seem to be great for covering water from the bank
I love spinners for covering water and spoons for winter fishing! Good callouts :)
Been using #1 for 25 years 👍🏻
Tried and true!
im in the uk and i've caught all my perch on the micro dropshot, it's been a blast but i still wish we had panfish here :(
I would love to catch some of those big European perch someday.
Good feedback - thank you for sharing. I will check that out!
Rebel Teeny Wake-R and Pop-R are amazing on ultralight gear.
Oh for sure!
This year I plan on fishing both the drop shot and ultralight drop shot with a jig & plastic on the bottom instead of the drop shot weight!
Nice! I have thought about doing that but I just have a bit more confidence in a single plastic approach for a slow technique.
as soon as you said "rahpallah" I knew you weren't from Minnesota like most other fishing channels 😂 (and myself)
😂😂
I'd like to learn more about your kayak and why you chose it.
The rebel crickhopper has always been a confidence bait for me.
You simply can't go wrong! Tried and true :)
That was awesome!
Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed it!
You should do a video on what baits you use with the dropshot.
I plan to do some drop shot focused videos soon. Thank you for the recommendation!
Loved this content Ethan! I am learning a lot from you these days and have already had some success with the Horse Fly and Donkey Tail Jr. I am going to try the double jig rig next time out and I will let you know how it turns out!
Thanks so much Tony!! Hope the double jig rig leads to lots of doubles for you 🤠🕺🏼
This is a weird question; a lot of us transferred to or started with Ultralight fishing setups because of your content. Would you ever consider making a video or two about what setups to step up to with larger rods and tackle?
Yeah, definitely. That is a good suggestion! I have a lot of bass gear and ultralight gear but not a lot in the middle. I can talk about this at some point.
Great stuff as usual. What's the line weight best for these techniques?
I use a variety of lines anywhere between 2-6lb. I would say 4lb mono is probably the most versatile but I often prefer 2lb to increase casting distance.
