This ultralight rig is a fantastic option to catch numerous species of fish throughout the year. I especially like using it in a little deeper water when the fish are bottom-oriented. Yo Ethan. You'll appreciate this: So I believe our kids are a few months apart. For the first time, I just gave my son a half of an old ugly stick rod with an old reel on it to get used to it and man he's been goin for an hour straight pretending to catch fish and practice reeling and stuff. About 40 minutes in, I showed him your "Teaching beginners how to fish the ned rig" vid from back in the day and he's copying all your movements now from when you were wearing the go-pro. It's pretty awesome seeing an almost 3 year old so stoked on fishing already haha.

Try his slip float rig from a previous video in shallow creeks, as seeing and feeling a float get pulled underwater on a bite should be exciting to anyone. Plus, the rig gets frequent bites, which helps prevent boredom
I'm pretty blessed, my wife IS my fishing buddy. We have the best times out on the water or fishing the shores around Northern MI.

Ive had a ton of success with that! 2lb test with a size 12 hook and small 1.5" plastic worm and a 1.77 gram dropshot for panfish! I end up getting a bunch of bass too!

Definitely a good tactic to have in the fishing arsenal. I've also used a split shot as another commented but have purchased some tungsten weights now. Time for the old goalie to embrace another game changer like the wacky rig. Tons of potential with ultralight drop shot

Owner makes #4 and #2 in their "Mosquito Light" model. So you can get the larger hook but the wire is thin enough that it still allows all but the 1.2 minnows to still float. A standard #4 Owner hook will sink a 2.2 minnow but the light version floats. I also commonly use abberdeens.
Good to know! Honestly I think the Mosquito Light is the version of hooks I broke. Not sure what it is all about, but it has happened a few times.
@@FishAnything From a metallurgical standpoint, I think the thing I like most about the mosquito hooks as a whole is how well they hold a point. I'm pretty sure they do this by selecting hardness over ductility so they do seem to break before they bend out. I've noticed that tendency across all of their hooks relative to competing hooks of the same type and size.

I also like it when bank fishing in cold weather, you can get your line out deeper w heavier weight.

Yesterday, I threw around the slip float rig you showed us on 4lb line. I hooked into some decent bass and some CHUNKY bluegill. My new PB gill! Great stuff man, I'll have to give this one a go soon!

I have been using an ultralight dropshot with nearly the same setup you described. In a pond with a mossy bottom it keeps me out of the moss.
I use the Owner mosquito hooks. They are very sharp and are available at Academy. I haven't had any trouble with the hooks breaking.
I smash down the hook barb so I can get the fish off easier and get my bait in the water for the next fish faster.
I often use split shot for the weight. I tie a figure 8 knot at the end of the line to keep the weight from sliding off the end of the line.
This rig also works well with live bait or frozen shrimp.
Thanks for the added notes. I think I may have actually broken the "mosquito light" option. It is a little bit lighter wire.
I too have used the split shot as the weight, tie a double or triple over hand knot and put on a split shot of your choice, and it works great, I have taken large split shot and manipulated them to an elongated shape and then squeezed them on, especially when fishing in aquatic vegetation

Appreciate all you've taught me dude. I'm glad that my own micro dropshot concept was basically exactly what your setup is - I caught some good eating trout on them last fall! Now I don't know what I'm doing in the spring but need to throw a few more dropshots to see what I can catch.

I’ve got a PE .03 #5lb braid line with a Trilene Sensation 4lb leader. I didn’t know if that would be too much for the rod to handle or not.
Drop shot rig or not I agree, I never use larger than a #2 hook. Typically #4

I was throwing 1" minnows on drop shot about an hour ago. It's been working like crazy this past week. Found some really great 1/16 tungsten weights (Nako). They also make them in 1/32.

Recently got a ultralight setup and have used a inline spinner so far. Only caught a dink bass but it has been fun.
It is a blast - definitely try some other techniques. Small jigs/plastics are the best all-purpose ultralight technique.
Ethan, I've been seeing ultra-light sized chatter baits and itty bitty lipless cranks (I've used the Strike King Bitsy Minnow), but I am curious of these hard baits in micro size! Would love to see your approach to using them on some fired up fish.
I will have to play around with more UL hardbaits this year. Good feedback!

Got my delivery of Mule Fishing gear. Promptly took it to the pond after work and caught 4 bass on 6 casts on an ul drop-shot with a nose-hooked donkey tail junior in dakota sunrise, all in about 30 min. They were baby bass but fun nonetheless!

Grrst tips mate, especially the one about getting the hook to face the roght way up. I really need to try some other techniques apart from just a jighead or ned rig and i will definitely try this.

Genuinely curious regarding the liquid/paste scents, I had an idea that sounds good in theory, don’t know if it would apply well.
This is specifically for the scents I’ve seen and seen you use that have a bit more of a nozzle to them. Rig up your soft plastic, remove it, and just pipe some scent into the plastic and put it back on. The idea is it creates a slightly longer lasting slow release of scent.
I’ve seen similar things before done in bass fishing like shoving alkaseltzers into plastics and flicking that around. Just a thought, thanks for the amazing content as always!
I definitely think you can try stuff like that. I usually put scent on the inside of tubes or hollow baits for that same reason. That being said, with micro plastics, I think a simple application on the outside is the best option just due to the thinner material.

Love this video! Even tho ive drop shotted for panfish it was nice to watch. I would explore different types and sizes of line, braid is nice but you may not need such heavy line, especially on an ultra light that may only be rated for 6 lb test. The braid and even mono in 4 and 6 pound test can do the job just fine even with the bigger fish, as long as you play them right with the drag. Again, something to explore in different bodies of water! If your seeing bottom in 10 feet of water i wouldnt use braid straight to the hook, where in a river especially with falling timber the braid is going to come in clutch. Cheers!!

I've been trying this technique and think that the drop shot style weight with that big long eyelet thing gets wedged up and stuck in rocks easier than jut a plain old egg sinker with the round eyelet. or even better an drag sinker.

I have watched ALL your videos on your ultra light rod reviews. Love them! I decided to go with the Blue Current iii 510 for that true ultralight feel and I love the rod! Thanks for helping me pick a rod. I also saw you really enjoy the Phenix Elixer 7"6'. How does it compare to the Blue Current? If you had to pick between the two rods that does a better job at helping the little fish show off a little, what rod would you pick?
They are both fantastic and both very different feeling. I’d say they are relatively equal in how they let the little fish show off though. The Phenix is a softer blank but still fast where the Yamaga is definitely a faster blank with less flex.
With micro dropshots i actually open that clamp so it doesnt clamp the line at all i just give it a knot. Especially when using mono or fluorocarbon

You do know perch are broadcast spawner's they dont make beds, so as far as staging im not sure they do that, and if so it would be near grass beds if the water your fishing has it, if not it could be brush piles, bunch of sticks and logs

Yes i throw a 1/8 oz drop shot with my kastking zephyr and it launches it that rod should work good as well

I typically drag them slowly along the bottom or fish them vertically beneath me.
Redfish, speckled trout,trout,bass,panfish,mahi mahi and trigger fish
Dropshot rig is great! Thanks for making the video. I was just doing the same with Owner Mosquito size 8 hook and 1/8 oz. Cylinder weight along with a variety of Mule plastics(Burro bug, Donkey Tail Jr, Minnow) very effective is cold water. As a bank angler I’m looking for a longer rod for this to move more line than my TFO 6’UL and 6’6”L, Phenix rod looks like a good option for that at 7’6” and not sloppy and wobbly. Ethan which Vanford size did you get to go with that rod 2000, 2500? How does it balance?
This is the 7'6 full rod butt Elixir and it balances and fishes very nicely. That is the size 2000 Vanford from Japan (with a shallow spool). This setup is a dream to be honest. I love it!
Have you ever tried a size 4 or 6 ewg wire hook on a d-s? Hard to find I grant you but I found some to try d-s in brushy areas.
That is a good idea! I can't say I have messed with it a whole lot, but that sounds like it would be great for a medium light or light setup with a bit stronger line.

edit I’m in Kansas and fish’s lots of rocks like you said I’m gonna try those circle ones too see if that helps
I used to throw the circle weights in Kansas and that was always better than the cylinder option.
Do have to fish this in vertical manner or can you cast out a bit from the bank or kayak and still fish the drop shot setup effectively?
You can do either!
Is it true that it's better to have a fish finder for dropshot fishing? Looks to me it would be much hard to locate the fishing without the fish finder with the speed of dropshot. Maybe it's better to use a jerkbait without fish finder?
It’s honestly not about what technique you’re using. A fish finder can be beneficial no matter what you fish with. A drop shot can be super useful fishing without electronics too!
what about a micro carolina rig i use one when i was a kid to catch all sorts of panfish.

for us budget folks , will a split shot on a overhand knot work fine ? is there a downside ?
I use split shot with this same rig and I actually prefer it to the more expensive weights. I tie a figure 8 knot at the end of the line and then clamp the split shot above the knot. The knot keeps the weight from sliding off the end of the line. Sometimes I even clamp multiple split shots to get more weight

Your rod is it a sierra ultra light rod sa700sf ultra finesse fast I think it’s the same rod as the suf700c the casting rod what do you think about the kaden 3 piece travel rods KTR700SF is better than the daiwa presso travel rods
I have the 6'2 version of the Dobyns spinning. And I have yet to try the Kaden but I might have to pick one up to play around with!
Could a round split shot serve the same purpose as a dropshot weight? Super inexpensive compared to a clip on.

You want to smash fish. Use a drop shot rig and a mosquito hook and a nose hooked gulp minnow. It crushes everything. Been using that set up for year’s.
They definitely catch a lot of fish!

Should work for trout - just make sure that it is legal in your waters. I know that trout regulations often don't want the drop shot to be used. Not 100% sure why but I have seen it a few times

Gah, I'm in North Central Arkansas (Bull Shoals Lake), and the wind has been ridiculous this spring here as well. I enjoy fishing bfs, but these wind gusts have made it darn near impossible.
We've got some really good lake perch here, so I'm going to put your micro drops hot to the test when the winds calm down some.
