I thank the lord everyday I don’t live near gators 😂 I love the water too much to be scared to ever go near it. The biggest thing we got to worry about up here in the Midwest is the stray snapping turtle. Dont wanna lose a finger but rather a finger than a whole arm 😂
Dammit Ethan I wasn’t planning on going Croppie fishing tomorrow, but you got me all fired up. You were a braver man than me using that light line. Great video.
Just got back to fishing and rediscovering UL game. So far I have to buy JDM to get the gears I need. Shimano and Daiwa def need to bring more stuff to this side of the pond. Just found out about Mule and placed my first order. Can’t wait =)
I went down to Galveston a little bit ago, and I brought my ultralight to fish saltwater! I got a new pb speckled trout, a spot and some croaker and a hard head catfish, throwing a shrimp jerk bait
I used to fish Reds and Specks in the waterway canal in south LA. Gill netters got in the private hunting lease that we used to fish and the fishing just went south fast. I brought an ultra lite rig with 4 lb. test line with me the next trip down there from Baton Rouge. I started using it a couple of hours in and after only catching one or two fish. I started catching small specks. A lot of them. SAved the trip for me. Even caught a few smaller "Rat" reds. The guy I was with went out and got a smaller rig the next day. We always brought our lighter gear with us after that and we both landed fish over 4 lbs. on those set ups! Ulta lite works ...even in Salt and Brackish Waters!
That sounds like fun. What line test and what kind of UL Rod and Reel did you use and recommend? I want to try that in saltwater. It wood be a blast if I could catch a 100+ lb shark on 2lb test line.
@@moseskongi4746 I used 8 lb braid to a 5 lb leader on a 5’6” vintage Eagle claw ultralight rod with an old Lews 500 size reel! Not a saltwater setup but it worked for the trip!

The only thing I've ever purchased from Japan was the 2023 Daiwa Legalis. It wasn't available over here yet, so I had no choice. I will say that they do make some really interesting stuff over there. It's like they either think we wouldn't buy it, or they want to keep some kind of secret! 😂 Great vid as always Ethan!
I’m not sure why they don’t just sell the same stuff here. The US is primarily a bass market but the ultralight stuff is blowing up so let’s get better solutions in the domestic market.

At times depending on the currency exchange rate between the U.S. Dollar and the Japanese Yen it is actually cheaper to buy name brand fishing gear from Japan than it is to buy it here in the states. That does not even go into the fact of how advanced the JDM gear is when it comes to specialized ultralight offerings as compared to what is available here domestically in the U.S. market. Even fishing line many lines sold as say 2lb test line here in the U.S.A. actually may have a breaking strength of 3 1/2 lbs or more and not be considered legal line to be used for a certified IGFA line class species record catch. Top brands of Japanese lines will be test strength of what it is advertised to be. This generally results in a thinner diameter lighter line that will cast small even 1/100th of an ounce jig much better and further than the U.S.A. available lines. When it comes to fishing lines pay as much or more attention to the diameter of the line than the advertised breaking strength. Want to get really light lures down really deep like 20 feet or so then try some of the ester lines from Japan that actually have no inherent buoyancy within the line itself for a new and better experience! JDM gear can open up an entirely new world in ultra light fishing as compared to what you may be used to using only domestic stuff here in the U.S.A.!
It would be good if you describe more about the line you use (stretch, line management, twist etc), compare to a braided or flouro line. Btw, the Sunline ur using is a Polyester line, aka Ester they call it.

I just ordered a st croix avid 6’9’ultra light and a medium light action rod and a 6’6’phenix elixir ultra light I hope they are better than the Daiwa presso rods ultra light
Ethan, I have a question maybe you can help with. I am filling a size 1000 reel I am planning on spooling with 2.3 lb test line. The spools only come with 80m of line, which would not fill the reel. Would you do backing for something like this? If so, what would you use? Maybe 6 lb mono? Or I have some cheap 6 lb braid that I dont want to cast, but could serve as backing.
I’ll certainly consider it! I’m primarily focused on designs which I think the industry lacks. Because there are already several curly tail grubs, it hasn’t been my top priority.
I saw the length options for this rod. The 6’8 rod length looks interesting. How would you compare this to your favorite Dobyns ultralight? I was about to pull the trigger until I saw this video! Hopefully you will make a comparison. It’s either this rod at 6’8 or the 7’ Dobyns
Not sure how the 6’8 balance would feel, but honestly this rod is great for the price so I’d definitely consider it. They’re a similar feeling blank. This is a bit lighter though.
@FishAnything I also got in my order of donkeytail jr’s, horsefly’s, and jig heads today!! Thanks man! When are the tackle boxes coming back in stock? I needs it!! 😂😂
Will I notice a significant difference when switching from a Dobyns Trout and Panfish rod with a Shimano Ultegra reel and 6 lb Daiwa J-Braid Grand 8X to a Shimano Soare XR rod with a Shimano Vanquish reel and Varivas Infinity 3, given that both rods have solid tips?
Ethan.. you crack me up! In a good way! I know you know who i fish is. He has a recent video using the Daiwa Gekkabijin rod (higher end model), and several using a Soare reel. Aggressively Average Anglers could have helped you with the pronunciation too. (This is NOT criticism! I only know "pronunciation" that I have heard the two previously mentioned guys on those RUclips channels use. They may be saying them wrong for all I know. I don't know how to read or speak Japanese. It was just the way you kind of shrugged off the fact that you were probably not pronouncing the names correctly. That was so PERFECT! I loved it!) When I saw you using that line I was hoping that you might give it a fair review. I too was wondering about it. I've heard that polyester ("Ester" ) line can be problematic. "Brittle, springy (wind knots are common) and not too good to tie directly to a lure because the knots have to be "flawless" in order to hold. Should always use a leader." So... what's your take? Still watching to see! I honestly have been a bit "scared" to use that type of rod and lite line as a bank fisherman. The pond I fish in has so many places to break off and trying to cast near the shore from the shore. Let's just say I'd be losing even more jigs and plastics from hanging in the bushes and trees. My line has flown 40 or 50 feet in the direction the wind is blowing on windy days with 8 lb. Daiwa J-Braid. Seriously. More than a 90 degree angle! ...After seeing the whole video, you seemed to have no really big issues. The greater casting distance and maybe increased number of strikes and catches due to the line most likely being less visible to the fish seems to make it worth a try. Thank you for sharing. I love this direction and hope to see more as the year progresses. As always, great video to watch and very helpful information. Blessings!
I became a fast fan of the Polyester! I’ve got two other spools to test as well so I’ll definitely continue to document my thoughts along the way. Thanks for sharing, Chip!
I started ul spinning in the late 60s. Garcia 308 reels and 4# line. Was as light that was usually available. I finally settled on 6# in the creeks with lots of rocks. I still use 6# FLY TIPPETS for the same reason. Ul is the method imo

Thinking trying the fenwick 6.6 ft does 1/16 oz
Ethan.. you crack me up! Blessings!
I have the same reel”awesome “ I paired it with old 1800 , an American made rod” ultralight” out of Texas🐟on
I fish is awesome!
Seeing bass like that makes me question if the rod could be a good trout rod.
Restock your bundles please.
Working on it! Soon I promise
@@FishAnythingyes 🙌🏻
First haha :D, really excited about 1.75lb line !
It’s really neat stuff! I’m quite intrigued by the Polyester options
Are you using some fluro or mono leader on that? Or just straight braid?
It’s just straight polyester.
@@FishAnything ima assume that'd some type of braid, yeah?
Ethan, you should change your RUclips channel name to ultralight Ethan 👌👌👌
Lol sometimes it feels that way!
Are you anywhere near white lake or port Austin ?
Not that I’m aware of lol
What website did you go with to buy JDM?
Digitaka!
@@FishAnything thanks!! I really enjoy your content, and living in Colorado I prefer UL gear! Thanks for inspiring me!
1.75 lb line! wow the lowest I went was I think 4
It’s good stuff!
Which length is your rod
It’s a little 5’5
5lb hi vis vicious braid has a smaller diameter than that mono. .002 inch
What model of rod is that?
Linked in description!
Jdm gear us strong little better then us stuff
JDM gear can be so much fun. The domestic market needs more of this type of stuff readily available.
Swa-ray is how you say it
Ahhhh that makes sense lol
I can't even catch a fish in the fishtank at Walmart.
Lol I probably couldn’t catch those fish either!
Oh look, you caught bait.
On 1.75lb test line and it was a blast :)
