I pack out fly rod, reel and hike in my wifes pumps. With that said, my youngest son is hiking out with us this weekend and I'm going to go ahead and just buy a full setup for him, so the links are appreciated!

That's crazy ! The fishing rod who showed with the cast King 500 fishing reel and rod. You said weighs 11 oz.
My back country fishing setup. Rod reel tackle box small live bait container & a spool of extra leader line. With a bag to hold everything but my rod. In my tackle box I've got a rather comprehensive tackle box. ( 65 Mini grubs, about 30 very small shrimp or more , probably over 100 hooks small of course. About 25 sinkers, hooks for the shrimp, some rooster tails, couple of kaskings spoon type lures, & a micro plastic lure ) In about a 3 & 1/2 ft modified stringer.
    ALL THAT ! .... Only way's only 11 OZ
As well my entire fishing system. I probably only got $80 in it max & IT GOOD QUALITY ! Tested it out.
Now granted it. It has took me some time to find quality. Gear to put this system together. Doing a lot of homework to find the lightest stuff. Been about 6-7 weeks doing it.

I agree with all of this. I'll add that I'm really liking the Bass Pro Shops Micro Lite Graphite Spinning Pack Rod (6', Fast) It's a 3 piece rod that I pair with a 500 Shimano Sienna. I recently started drinking chai tea lattes and wearing my wife's shoes, and when I did I bought a budget fly fishing setup, the Echo Traverse 4wt which comes with a cool hard case. To my delight, the case holds both the fly rod w/ reel, and the spinning rod. It's light and I don't worry so much about my rod(s) getting banged up when lumbering through the brush.

best UL reel I've used so far for backpacking is the Piscifun Carbon X 1000. Absolutely legendary reel that is terrifically light, and reasonable at around $55. Spooled the whole thing with 6lb Seaguar Red Steelhead Fluoro (stupid good abrasion resistance), but I'll take out some fly fishing tippet to fine tune for different sizes of alpine fish.
Haven't tried UL fishing with braid but I'll have to go to my local pond soon to get some casting tests done. If I can cast significantly farther with the braid in all conditions (mainly wind), I'll be sold on it!
I'll have to check out that Fenwick Rod too! Thanks for the tips!

I hadn't heard of that reel. I checked it out. It's lightweight! Think I'll have to check it out. I'm personally sold on braided line for backcountry fishing because of It's versatility but I don't use it for every typed of fishing. Thanks for the comment and the tip 😁

@@stendo3402 I absolutely love it. It has an unusual action taper, but it's kind of cool. it feels really snappy and faster action on the lower half of the rod, but looser and forgiving in the top 18 inches or so. It's the perfect balance between responsive and noodly for UL trout fishing.

I have been thinking about adding a couple of hmx rods to my arsenal . I love the Daiwa presso rods. I wish they came with a full grip. I have 3 okuma guide select pro rods and they are very light. The new vanford reels seem like the perfect reel. Unfortunately, they are $249. The 2024 2000 vanford is on a 1000 body. Seems like a winner.

Yesterday i was seriously considering commenting on your last video. To see if all was good with you, since you haven't posted in a loooong time. Then you posted today. Glad everything is good on your end. Those are some sweet rod/reeI setups. My one rod and reel setup has been going for over 40 years. Been trying some new stuff on amascam, one setup didnt even last a fishing trip last year. The next one has potenial and the last one is a nice salmon setup, i hope... Its an ugly stick rod with a kastking reel. Went cheap on the reel since i dont do a lot of salmon fishing and can put a better one on later. I have all my gear ready for fishing and hunting and ready to go for the season.

Yeah fishing and hunting season is basically upon us! Lots of adventure to be had. Good luck out there!

There are many high quality Japanese multi piece rods designed for this purpose. I have many and all are very reliable. They range from affordable below 100$ to very high end. I have 4-5 piece rods for camping all the time and never had issues with them breaking. Also some rods even come with very compact semi rigid cases that are light weight as well.
My favorite budget one is the abu Garcia zoom safari range. Good all around for multi species.

    • @spinningrodfisherman
      @spinningrodfisherman 3 месяца назад

Forgot to mention even these budget Japanese rods are actually really good quality and fit and finish. Comparable to any mid tier rods here. For sure better than 95% of the multi piece rods here in the same price range.

Well the answer to your question is... it depends 😆🤣 A lot of variables to consider there but when it comes down to it, my experience is that braided line works best in the backcountry. Just use whatever you want though!
