As a kayak fisherman less is more a 7' MH baitcasting combo and 6'6 M spinning combo really simplifies life on the water and makes you focus on actually fishing
@@tommybool1000 I usually fish anything over 1/4 oz on the 7' MH baitcasting combo like texas rigs, Jigs, spinnerbaits and frogs. On the 6'6 spinning I throw dropshots, weightless Texas rigs, wacky rigs and ned rigs.
Another good feature of concentrating on the specs of the equipment, aside from brand choice, is it will apply to everyone’s price point. While I also like the $100 range for rods or reels, if I come across a nice deal, or decide I deserve to splurge on a particular rod/reel, knowing what I want for length, strength, action, or reel retrieval ratio are still the key factors in making each purchase. You give useful, practical, informative advice that can apply to everyone. A lot of times folks who do tournaments are recommending equipment based on where they’re at, instead of where their viewers are at. That’s never a problem with your recommendations. Many thanks for that. 👍👊🏻
Sup. You nailed it. I am 49 and disabled. This year broke my budget on 3 combos. 2 baitcasting and 1 spinning, decided it's time. I still have some dedicated spinning combos, 1 dropshot, 1 frog, 1 live bait. And now my new ones. Still have many more but some of the grandkids are ready to upgrade to spinning combos. Yes I started family young at 15. But everything you said makes me more confident in my new purchases. Ty tc
I actually have 3 baitcaster rods and 3 or 4 spinning rods. What you presented here not only helps people new to fishing, but also gives confidence to those of us who appear to be doing the right things with the equipment we have. It’s always good to listen carefully and learn from professionals, whatever the field they are in.
I have been studying bass fishing for just over 4 years now( yes on YT, YES I take notes. I guess that makes me a googan of sorts.) Great info! I personally use a baitcaster for everything. Even down to finesse. I use the Shimano 150 MGL with a 7’1” medium/medium light, fast action rod for all of my Ned, wacky, Neko, etc. Having the right equipment is key! (If and only if your budget allows!) Just my two cents!
As someone on a pretty tight budget I would definitely agree with this list, I like what you said it depends where you live and fish, I was gonna say something about that but you mentioned it already. Also, people don't always realize you can have 2-3 different reels with different types of line and switch them on the rods, case in point, in most areas, I personally think a medium power fast action rod is insanely versatile. You can slap some copolymer or mono line and you instantly have a great cranking rod, than throw a different reel on with braid or flouro and have a spinnerbait or jig rod. Cool video man
Used to think it was my inability to catch anything but catfish. All I have is MH Fast action baitcast rods. That's what's available around my residence in NY. So no we I'm using my spinning rod for my jerk baits. With what you're saying, I need to revamp my rods. Thanks for your advice. Also thanks to the first 3-5 people who left comments.
As a Floridian myself I got to say that all you need in Florida is 2 rods. 6.5ft heavy for flipping and punching and a 7ft medium fast for your all around fishing

I’m a casual but I have a setup similar to your recommendation. 1. Ugly stik carbon - medium heavy fast action 7’ paired with Abu Garcia max pro reel in 7.1:1 ratio 2. Abu Garcia black max v2 combo - medium fast action 6’ 6” paired with black max v2 reel in 6.4:1 ratio 3. I’m considering the Abu garcia veritas combo but don’t know if I should go medium light so I can do 1/8 oz bait or medium heavy for higher line weight.
I think the top three to start with if possible are: 1. Medium moderate 7ft casting combo 2. Medium heavy fast 7ft 3. Medium or medium lite 7ft spinning combo with 3000 thousand rod These will cover everything from finnesse fishing to your topwater fishing to Medium flipping, pitching jigging IMHO also it I based on your fishing style and what you like throwing. Obviously it's also based on your personal location and lakes and ponds maybe river/streams your fishing as well. If you have areas with more structure and snags these setups may need to be upgraded a class or two and if you have areas with not so much stricter or vegitation then you can go possibly lighter. But awsome video and very informative to help at some kind of starting point.
I'm the guy that as a coangler shows up with 13 rods all set up for the dift techniques. As well as a Yeti cooler size Tackle bag. I'm a super popular draw!! Ull admit that a T rig, topwater and dropshot should be there own set ups. Then ur 3 and ur at 6. Would u throw a magdraft or glide bait on ur 7 3" mhvy? Love ur channel Ty!!
Hey Tyler that was some good stuff never really looked at it that way. My question is do you think you could do another one for those people that have a smaller johnboat tape boat. I’m lucky I have both Ranger and the old tracker tadpole 14 foot. Would like to know your thoughts on type of rods to use or have on hand if you are fishing from a smaller craft
You mentioned putting 10lb test braid on your spinning reel and attaching leader line, some of which was a higher pound test than the braid. Has that ever caused a problem? I have wondered before if there are some “rules” for braid to leader connections considering the pound test? I appreciate this video as I am an angler who fished on a budget and out of a kayak. I can’t afford a bunch of rods and reels and I can’t take “that many” (about 5 or 6 right now) on my kayak anyway.
I’ve found probably about double the diameter if you’re going to add a heavier leader to your braid. But I’d go heavier if you need it and see how it goes. I use 12lb big game on 6/30 lb power pro maxcuatro. And 6/20 or 4/15 on my spinning with 8-10 lb Vanish floro.
I'm on the same page as you with the 3 rods . I do the 3 rods when I fish out of back of the boat with any of my buddies. It cuts down on clutter inside the boat .

Was expecting a MH, a H, and a medium spinning. Happy that you went with the medium baitcaster. Truly is underrated for most anglers use, and a medium heavy is recommended for beginners. I have always fished a medium baitcaster, even before i knew what it was. I'm telling you folks, heavier rods have their place but they are overrated and specialty type rods that if you are a bank fisherman are pretty much for punching and frogging and thats it.
Unless you just like spinners, theres no need for them if you prefer baitcasters. Inshore in Tx, often, you'll find folks throwing light lures (micro, bfs, weightless flukes....) on UL, L, ML casting rods. Old 18 makes excellent UL, L, and ML rods for those applications.
Odd question but could you recommend two makes and models say in a Abu Garcia or even cheaper a king cast combo for the extremely cheap fisherman that are do it all or similar to your setups just not as quality

Rod price is fine. Just the reel price tag is an oof. Probably a no can do. The state I'm in New mexico is also kind of bad for bass unless you have a boat. Amazing trout fishing. What's your opinion though on ugly stick rods? Also good low budget baitcaster reels. I've just been using spinning but would like to grab at least 1 baitcaster

This is a great list. Power and action for just three rods are right on the money. Length I feel depends on how tall you are. I love anything from a 6’10-7’3. I’m 5’10 and I feel like those fit my height much better.
Man I gotta learn more about gear ratio in reels, I got a 7.5.1 lews speed spool and just use it for everything on a lews 6’10 speed stick😂 I only have that combo and a 5’6 zebco slingshot that I use for my plastics, I need a new spinning combo lol
Tyler, i have been bass fishing in South Africa for many years but i still find it hard to understand the difference between fast and moderate tips on the rods. How do i test it when buying a rod.
While adjusting my tension knob, my lure won’t fall at all and then will all of a sudden drop immediately way to fast because of the tinniest adjustment. I can’t seem to find that good middle ground where the lure drops slowly without back lashing. What should I do?
Is the lure heavy enough? You're not trying to throw a weightless trick worm right? If the weight is good, loosen it slowly until the lure falls then barely tighten. If the lure doesn't fall, don't sweat it too much. Make sure you can't wiggle the spool left to right with your fingers. If you can, tighten it a little more. Then start casting, and good luck to you.
Maybe you can provide some input on how I could best use my current rods/reels. I have a spinning BG2500 on a 7ft ML/XF. A tranx300 on a 8ft H/F swimbait/a-rig rod, a CuradoDC on a 7'2" MH/F, and a spinning Stradic FL4000 on a 6'6 MH/F. Thoughts?
Hi I bought the ark Moneymaker and ordered the Bruin ELS 7.1 I got the rod but the reel is not available and they couldn't give me a ship date. Is there another reel you would recommend?
Can you mistakenly put reel on the wrong rod? Can you put a spinner on a bait casting rod or thee other way? Each rod have thier line eyes up or the bottom for strength/sensitivity am I right.
Hey man. I am purchasing the bruin reel from sportsman outfitters and I had the money maker in my cart when I noticed they have a Memorial Day sale on ark pro rods right now. It’s buy one get one for $19. What would you do? Buy the money maker anyways or take the deal for two rods? The two come out to the same price as a money maker. I just don’t know if there’s a big enough difference between the Tharp series rods and pro rods!?!? Help!
I’m a daiwa fanboy but it’s because I built and setup their display at the bassmaster and icast trade shows. I’m sure you’ve seen it.. made in Cleveland!
Ugly stick 7 ft gx2 medium casting ( all single hook as well as crankbait) ugly stick 7 medium light casting ( lipless, crankbaits , number 3-4 mepp) ugly stick 6.6 light spinning ( all finesse) = 90% all applications.
this i just don't get these guys always feature these 7 plus rods but what about 7 ft rods as if they are nothing i have 10 rods and not one of them goes past 71/2 and they serve me just great even the four spinning rods i have 3 are 6/6 the other one is 6/9
Yall youtube has become utterly ridiculous with the dang advertisements I literally just had 4 ads back to back in this video. This needs to stop, or if there is someone out there thinking of starting their own youtube please do it and without a ton of ads 1 is okay but 4 back to back... C"mon.

Thoughts?
Can you list top budget combos by name brand?
Hi I bought the ark Moneymaker and ordered the Bruin ELS 7.1 I got the rod but the reel is not available and they couldn't give me a ship date. Is there another reel you would recommend?
Good solid info, thanks for the vid
Excellent info bro. Thanks :)
***Took the plunge and ordered a Bruin 7.3:1 reel. I will let you know my thoughts after I use it a few times***
Where do you look up these rods because i can t find them
i carry one spinning rod 6'10 medium fast for smaller baits idky i cant keep my hands off the baitcaster
Can you mistakenly put reel on the wrong rod? Can you put a spinner on a bait casting rod or thee other way? Each rod have thier line eyes up or the bottom for strength/sensitivity am I right.
I love the way you explained the rods and how to understand them. Thanks
Nice video.
Help!
That’s a hard deal to pass up
Great vid thx.
What weight braid?
I’m a daiwa fanboy but it’s because I built and setup their display at the bassmaster and icast trade shows. I’m sure you’ve seen it.. made in Cleveland!
Ugly stick 7 ft gx2 medium casting ( all single hook as well as crankbait) ugly stick 7 medium light casting ( lipless, crankbaits , number 3-4 mepp) ugly stick 6.6 light spinning ( all finesse) = 90% all applications.
what’s your opinion on 2 piece rods?
Good luck in Florida
how about a line video now?
this i just don't get these guys always feature these 7 plus rods but what about 7 ft rods as if they are nothing i have 10 rods and not one of them goes past 71/2 and they serve me just great even the four spinning rods i have 3 are 6/6 the other one is 6/9
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 excellent
Welcome to florida
How about doing a video of lures you can use in fresh water and salt water fishing.. example musky lures, chatter bait, rattle trap......
Throwing a heavy cover jig with a medium heavy rod will miss a lot of bites
What's the point of all these techniques when most things catch bass?
fishing road and reel for $15 gets the job done for me
Okay, I'm paying attention to the power, action, and length.
Everything is discontinued. Please update.
Yall youtube has become utterly ridiculous with the dang advertisements I literally just had 4 ads back to back in this video. This needs to stop, or if there is someone out there thinking of starting their own youtube please do it and without a ton of ads 1 is okay but 4 back to back... C"mon.
They dont control that completely
