@@bgeezus3955I tend to agree. Here’s what I have: 6:1 on MH/F for spinnerbaits, small swim baits, vibrating jigs, etc 6:1 on M/M for crankbaits/ treble 7:1 on MH/F for worms/ frogs 8:1 on MH/F for flipping/ pitching And a spinning reel for wacky rigs, ned rigs, tubes, and drop shots. @@jonathangarzon2798 Yeah lol, big and older bass develop patterns and can recognize lures. So there are always new techniques and lures to counter their natural adaptation.
I fully agree with you Tyler. I have one medium casting rod and the one mediim spinning rod. All others are medium heavy rods in spinning and casting, with one action for frog fishing. I fish mainly Shimano rods and reels with just braid on just about all of them. Some i don't even put a leader on and i do not loose fish. Many good products out there.
Good vid. I’ve fished for many years with Spinning rigs until 5 years ago when I started using Baitcasters too; and never looked back. I studied and practiced, practiced, practiced with the Baitcasters to master the use of them. Love the versatility and downright fun they both provide.
Great video. I like your message. So many content creators go right to 7’0-7’3” MH/F baitcast combo. Personally, I think the advent of FFS has begun disproven that. Buying a baitcast M/F or M/ModF as the second combo is spot on. M power candle treble baits and at same time fish pretty heavy cover single hook baits when playing around with different lines. …. My fifth combo hands down is a jig rod. Another great message, buy that one rod for your favorite technique.
Very good analysis of recommendations Tyler. First time seeing you. I'm a Pac N-W guy and fish all species available. Some small, like Kokanee & Rock Cod, SM Bass, all moving & still water trout, and the variety of salmon species, ling Cod & Halibut. I also fish the Prairies as I originate there and my brothers still live 'back East'. So, pike, musky, lakers etc... come into play. My moving water ranges 4' to 200' wide, 1' to 30' deep, smooth & slick to ridiculous. I don't focus my efforts on one fishery. Our regulations for moving water are single hook, barbless, no natural bait, no scent, and you have to release almost everything you catch. I do love bass fishing as my lake is a good one for that. My bass rods range from 3' to 16', spinning, spin-cast, bait-cast, but I have a number of salty-reels, single-action & conventional trolling style reels, spinning & bait-feed spinning, blah, blah, and a few dedicated to moving water. I use 7'6" musky rods, 50# braid & Ambassadeur 5500 for my Bass heavy-cover needs. Your 'heavy description' seems to be the same. I use a lot of Ambassadeur reels, 4600-7000 sizes. I love the 'synchro' level-wind which minimizes backlash. (all were bought just as the Revo was introduced). I won't tell you how far I can toss a 1.5oz BuzzBomb or DeadlyDick in the salt, but I have paid for a couple boat windows of passing trollers who weren't very close to the jetty I was casting from... 10'6" Shimano Cennan, 'Slow-Heavy" w/7000 C3, 30# fused line, truly awesome, but I now have to re-spool. I only go barbless, and use a lot of mono co-polys because most bass fishing for me needs the shock absorbing nature of mono and many have only a little stretch which is perfect. Those are top-water Jitterbugs etc...and I use med/med-hvy rods, again, to keep them pinned. For 'finesse' or drop-shots, or suspending lures, I want braid/fused lines w/flouro leaders for sensitivity. And a fast tip regardless the power. Same with jigs. I troll using monos and a med 7'6" rod again to keep them on all the way. Actually, my main reasons for using a spinning reel are casting into the wind. And, I just obtained a 10'6" Salmon/Steelhead "Float" rod, rated 2-6#, 1/16-1/4 oz lure, with a 50-size, 8# braid & 3' mono coated leader. I chose it and the following, to cast 1/32-1/4oz jigs & lures. Before that, I only used an "UglyStik" 7'6" Light casting rod & an Omega spin-casting reel rigged the same. Both of these will cast tiny spinners, cranks & spoons, and any plastic without weights. Love them a ton. My fast crankbait rod is 6', composite, softer tip, more parabolic. And, for fresh water, I use 14' & 16' 25#-rated panfish rods for "dipping" shore brush-lines, heavy lily pads, really thick fall-downs, and under low tree lines with pretty deep water. I use 7+:1 reels w/flouro. Now, if we're to talk 'heavy', I also jig to 300' for halibut using 10oz weighted jigs/baits, Okuma Catalina depth-finders & 100# braids. I also used these rigs for Yellow-Fin offshore. I needed the rig cuz they fight like no tomorrow, but they're not that heavy & I wished I took my Cennan & Ambassadeur. Next time?
I got two medium spinning rods a few months ago when I started fishing . I’m such a jump stright to the difficult stuff the pros use a complete try hard lol so I already have a Johnny morris carbon lite curado dc jig baitcaster and and frog . Next I’m going for the chatterbait rod then the jerk bait . May pick one one last one would be the dragging rod for now . Costing me well over a grand ! I’ll have them for the rest of my life I’m ready to fish I’m all in ! Can’t wait to be able to throw anything I want with a switch of a rod .
Tyler, would you add a link to the video you made a couple of years ago that matched the rod combos with the five types of presentations...moving, top-water, finesse, slow moving (jig and worm). It helped me as a co-angler understand how to prepare to fish when you have limited space on a boat or want to limit how much to carry when walking. I found that video very helpful and I am sure those new to your channel would also. Keep up the good work.

I'm a bank guy so I only have 5 rods for everything I do from the bank. Guys on boats are probably different, but I have a 7'2 MH Zodias for jigs up to an ounce, 7'2 Heavy Expride for frogs and heavier jigs/cover, 7'0 Orochi Shakyhead for everything spinnin, its soft enough for a drop shot and stout enough for a 3/8th free-rig, 7' Levante Diablo Spec-R for square bills and keitechs, and a 7'2 SLX Glass rod for topwater stuff like KVD Wake baits, Whopper Ploppers etc.
That Mach Jacked Medium Spinning combo is legit shocked that specific combo wasnt on your list! my favorite medium spinning rod combo. it replaced a $900 setup i had for a 1/3rd the price. Great suggestions!
I've seen a bunch of these types of vids and I really agree with your theory the most, and you're right, that 5th rod is your specialty rod and will change depending where you are in the country, or like a specific technique like you said. One thing you didn't mention, a person can have one rod and numerous reels with different lines on them and completely change the purpose of the rod (that MH can quickly change from a frog rod to a cranking rod buy putting on a different reel/line). Also, I don't know if people just aren't aware or what but copolymer line, high quality brands like izorline xxx, suffix advance, McCoy, and Trilene sensation are all so extremely versatile, they're not really perfect for anything...but good for everything... literally all my rods (minus a few with braid, and one fluoro rod) have izorline xxx copolymer and I've never once had an issue....and it's CHEAP.
I would add one more combo for those of us in Florida. A heavy duty pitching and flipping combo and then for those throwing large swimbaits, a swimbait combo and I also also carry a jerkbait combo and occasionally a moderate glass rod baitcaster combo for crankbait fishing including lipless crankbaits😉
Love the videos. Learn so much from them. My son is interested in setting up one rod for topwater. He does not have baitcasting reels figured out yet. Any suggestions for spinning option for what he wants to do? We bank fish 95% of the time. He has a ultra lite combo and a spinning medium combo.
Ive bass fished my whole life ,though i typically used live bait and i was very slow to adopt a baitcaster but once i got into useing artificial baits ,i cant imagine not having mostly bait casting setups. I take four rods on my kayak and 3 are casting combo's
For the bank beating pond angler, the second rod is the best IMO. A medium power rod is all you really need if you have to choose just one. Also pretty much cover all lure weight ranges that you'll need. Personally, I would still prefer to spool braid on with a FC leader.
I'd get two, 1.a finesse rod(fast action) with spinning reel w/mono for worm fishing n all small baits And a 7f3 MH baitcaster rod w/ braid for frog fishing and bigger baits
Meanwhile im over hear using my ultra light trout rod to land bass because my bass rod broke. I’ll tell you what even small bass on an ultra light are so much fun to catch!
I'm not a fraction of the fisher you are, so i just mean this from a personal view. But i think a 6'6 rod is a very good starter size. Most beginners aren't getting a boat, so with casting from the bank, there are times bushes and low trees get snagged much easier. When i went to a 7' from a 6'6 i felt like i went from a pocket knife to a longsword.
If you're into lots of crankbait fishing, you should look for a composite or fiberglass rod. It would be best if you have a softer rod for these treble hooks or you'll lose many fish.
You all ways give great information I would love if you would do a video for someone how is just started out bass fishing on the best baits and ways to fish them like me I can only fish from the bank
I have over 50 combos. I just picked up a BFS combo that i put together for $50 safe to say i wont be picking up my other combos anytime soon. Sone of them cost $800 and up too. BFS all day everyday now. I havent skunked since i been using BFS my catch rate went up averaging 15-20 fish now.
My first two rods in order are a 7' medium heavy baitcasting combo, and a 7' medium heavy spinning combo. Probably should have got a medium on the spinning combo.
What's the best situation to use my 7'6 medium- moderate fast caster for? Ive been using it to lob jigs and Texas rigs to the other edge of the lake where no one is
I fish in rivers and clear lakes and I was wondering what rod and reel to get. I’ve been wanting a bait caster but want something I can use swim jigs plastic worms and top water but it seems like I would need more then one?
@@TylersReelFishing I don't remember exactly which video it was, but I remember you using the FG Knot and telling us how you would make a video on it. What I personally was hoping to see in that video was basically like an FG Knot masterclass in a sense: How to tie it, what line to use, how long the leader should be, and what lures or methods to pair it with. And thanks for responding Tyler, it means a lot!
I went in reverse. Went from a beginner spincast to a baitcaster then a spinning reel setup. Love my baitcasters , but everything has been hitting on a weightless wacky worm wtf? 😆
What power rod should you get for a spinning reel with braid? Does it matter should I get a lighter power rod, w/ a slower action, so I don’t rip the hook out during hook sets? I know there is a science to this sport, don’t really know the finer details when it comes to setting up a combo, with a certain line spec.
The answer to that all depends on the blank, and the rod company that cuts the blank down. A ML Fast from Lew’s well more than likely feel different than a ML Fast from Abu. I think the M and ML, in order that I have linked below, are fantastic for all purpose finesse, and drop shots, respectively. But you really just have to test for yourself.
If I could only have 5, as a northern angler: 7’ M/L fast spinning rod, 7’ M fast spinning rod, 6’10” M fast baitcast, 7’ MH mod/fast baitcast, 7’2” MH fast baitcast.
Recently bought a slow sink jerkbait but after watching your jerkbait video I’m second guessing myself do you think it will be good for suspending fish 12-17 ft deep
Definitely could be! Depends on your water clarity, though. If they are suspending that deep, just getting a deep diving suspending jerk bait that is above their heads could work.
4 combos you’re just getting into the rabbit hole brother if you got 4 you’ve got 10 lol or is that just me 😅 guess that’s why I started making my own.
2 years in at 20 combos now lol and eyeing my next I deffinately feel ya. Tackle junkie fever hurts. Coarse so does taste, trying to decide on nrx+, st croix legend extreme, daiwa steez ags, or megabass destroyer p5 for next one in casting for a out of this world sensitivity soft plastic like senko, free rig, drop shot rod. So hard to decide but think I leaning toward nrx+ 852c. Don't have any of the ones I listed but hey only live once.
There’s no need for a 7 foot rod either 6,6 is a goood number and will work for anything for spinning 6,6 to 7,3 for bait casting 6,9 to 7,3 also thanks for commenting. I love your vids so much
When buying your first bait caster RH anglers need to buy a LEFT HANDED bait casting reels. Don't buy into this RH reel which will require you to learn how to cast and switch hand# forever ... it's just not necessary just like for a spinning reel you don't buy a RH handle reel so don't do it for a baitcaster!
I’ve discussed this in a video. There really is no idiocy, you just have to do what feels most comfortable. Switching hands is not causing you to lose fish
@@TylersReelFishing if you believe one of the primary tenants of speed for baitcaster vs spinning or necessity (like fishing in tournaments) of the need for less time getting more casts out there; every time you have to change hands back and and forth is taking a LOT of time. Then there is the not tiring from holding rod, working Lures and fighting fish with your strong arm yes it is absolute idiocy to hold your rod with your weak arm. This is a programmed/ conditioning from the creation of the conventional reel and is not practical at all any longer. Every person who cares about fishing as a sport or hobby and especially ones who are influencing others should be getting people to use the hardware most beneficially.
@@L0st-n0foundI am right handed and would much rather hold the rod in my right and reel with my left. Your reasoning is your opinion, not what’s best for everyone.
@@clarkgarber5495you realize that what you would much rather do is what I am saying everyone should do, right? Hold the rod with dominant hand just like almost everyone does with spinning, practically zero people fly fishing don't hold with dominant hand, people who sword fight for a living or sport (Olympics) hold with dominant heaven forbid people who fought with swords to survive (think ancient history or game of thrones) would ever think not to use their dominant hand to fight. That is the point the thing you need the most power, movement and control over, the rod, you hold with your dominant hand. Tennis or pickleball racquet, swinging a baseball bat, throwing a baseball, bowling, throwing darts, dominant hand for the important part. Writing with a pen or pencil... You guessed it. It's only stupidity from the origins of conventional reels and nobody thinking to change them that baitcasters are stuck on the wrong handed sides It's not really peoples feelings, it's not non-idiocy (ooh a double negative,) it's people and the device (the baitcaster) being wrong. Sure some person could have some issue and need to use the other side like a handicapped person but the handed-Ness of something is supposed to be the standard for the most or almost all people and for baitcasters 99.9999% of people who are right handed should reel with left And converse.

What are your thoughts on a spincaster reel/closed spinner for a beginner
One thing you should have included is gear ratio. Thanks for the video this really helped me out a lot !
Anything in the 6’s and 7’s. True! Wish I would have included that
You all ways give great information I would love if you would do a video for someone how is just started out bass fishing on the best baits and ways to fish them like me I can only fish from the bank
I have. Search “TylersReelFishing beginner”
@@TylersReelFishing ok thank you
Thanks for all the great content. Just curious to know where the Lews Mach 1 speed spool would fall in your categories?
That first baitcaster. 7’ (or so) M power
Dude what beginner lures would you recommend for the second combo? Probably a couple chatters, but what else?
I have over 50 combos. I just picked up a BFS combo that i put together for $50 safe to say i wont be picking up my other combos anytime soon. Sone of them cost $800 and up too. BFS all day everyday now. I havent skunked since i been using BFS my catch rate went up averaging 15-20 fish now.
Hey, what line do you put on your spinning rods?
My first two rods in order are a 7' medium heavy baitcasting combo, and a 7' medium heavy spinning combo. Probably should have got a medium on the spinning combo.
For sure
What's the best situation to use my 7'6 medium- moderate fast caster for? Ive been using it to lob jigs and Texas rigs to the other edge of the lake where no one is
Crank baits
I fish in rivers and clear lakes and I was wondering what rod and reel to get. I’ve been wanting a bait caster but want something I can use swim jigs plastic worms and top water but it seems like I would need more then one?
Now what about a bfs baitcaster reel instead of the spinning reels ?
Can throw top water with a medium power, bait caster rod
Do you know when the laws custom is gunna be out?
Is the 7’3” MH the moderate or moderate fast? Looking for a rod to throw chatter/spinner baits on that will work for both. Thanks!
Totally thought Tyler was doing this video in a robe. I thought well that’s inquisitive. 😂😂
I wish I seen this years ago, I have so many combos now lmao Still happy about it tho
Man i wish i had money for a decent baitcaster setup man
Hey Tyler, when can we expect a video on spooling reels with the FG Knot?
As in, how to tie it? Be more specific
Got it. I’ll plan that one for next spring probably
can u do a top water video of just off insane blow ups??
Tyler I’m looking for a rod I can multipurpose for frogs and jigs. What do you think?
The 7’3” MH
I like a little bend in my baitcaster. Feels a bit more natural to me
On rob combo one what braided weight test would anyone recommend
If it's a do all rod, I use 30lb braid, and a 10 or 12lb flouro leader
I normally bring 5 rods with me, I only use about 2 of them, main setup is a BFS, I just cant put that thing down.
@@TylersReelFishing thank you man love your content
Master your bait caster.
@@TylersReelFishing ok thank you
Give me a 6”10ML spinning and a 7”2M casting and I’ll fish 90% of lures and technique out there.
Days are always better when you post😀
Do you fish with any bfs baitcaster
No
I wish you woulda talked a little bit about the reels, atleast like recommended spool size/ gear ratio
Gear ratio in the 6's or 7's. Spool size doesn't matter. No main stream reels come in BFS size spool without you knowing it
2 and 3 should be switched around. I think with two spinners to start with people will be more inclined to refine their setup
What about for crankbaits?
Either the first 2, or make 5 your specialized crankbait rod if you like throwing them that much 👍🏼
What’s more fun, buying new rod and reel? Or catching a bass?
Catching a bass on a new rod and reel 😎🎣🤜🏼🤛🏼

God bless bro
God bless you too!
I’m guilty of having over 5k in rod and reels pains me to say that out loud 😂
Hey man, don't be ashamed! You're taking your love for fishing seriously!
In my opinion 6,6 medium action spinning rod is better than a 7 foot
Unless you’re kayak fishing or short on space, I just don’t see the advantage to going smaller
There’s no need for a 7 foot rod either 6,6 is a goood number and will work for anything for spinning 6,6 to 7,3 for bait casting 6,9 to 7,3 also thanks for commenting. I love your vids so much
I have simply just never liked using spinning rods. Using them has just always felt awkward to me.

I think you might have put the wrong budget bait caster real in the description, that says $150
Changed it 👍🏼
I know I'm limiting myself, but I just don't like spinning reels. Never have. Now that I can use a baitcaster, I don't want to use anything else.
That's why they make bfs now

Sorry but if these are budget combos I'm in trouble.

Nah it's all wrong here's the real list

First 😂
Every right hander should start using 'left handed' baitcasters
Not much is more idiotic than the fallacy of the baitcaster handedness.
It's only stupidity from the origins of conventional reels and nobody thinking to change them that baitcasters are stuck on the wrong handed sides
It's not really peoples feelings, it's not non-idiocy (ooh a double negative,) it's people and the device (the baitcaster) being wrong.
Sure some person could have some issue and need to use the other side like a handicapped person but the handed-Ness of something is supposed to be the standard for the most or almost all people and for baitcasters 99.9999% of people who are right handed should reel with left
And converse.
