- I improved the video and audio quality of this recording of the one-of-a-kind Rarities Night concert at the Beacon Theatre in 2011. The concert is pieced together from multiple sources, with video for 10 of the songs and slideshow pictures to fill in the rest (pictures mostly taken from Getty Images from a different 2011 concert since they did not have photos from this show).
The beginning of Dizzy's Bidness and Reelin' in the Years are missing, and there are only a few seconds of the beginning of My Old School. Setlists show The Untouchables was played at the end of the show, but I could not find any recording of that song. Thank you to @TheDanVault for helping me fill in some of the audio I was missing. / thedanvault
The audio is all from audience recordings of varying qualities, so I have done my best to make it as even as I can, but the last few songs are pretty low quality compared to the rest. The video is taken from several sources that posted on RUclips, most of which has been removed. The only original video source left is / sd2010sd

Seeing actual footage of Donald singing the Second Arrangement is otherworldly
I still maintain that Steely Dan is the best American band of all time. And that's that.
That and Doobie brothers as a close second, but only because of their cooperation on alot of albums.
I don't know where you found this but Thank God you did. I was obsessed with finding the 2nd arrangement. Now it's finally been leaked and cleaned up. But seeing them playing it live is amazing.
What a night. Went by myself, bought a single ticket & ended up in the 3rd row between Donald & Walter. Rest in Peace Walter Becker.
Hey - me too! Was over from my home in Scotland, got a single seat - 5th row, in front of the horn section. What a privilege and to be in the Beacon Theatre was a dream come true.
Love Steely Dan. Saw them the first time in 73 and became a huge Dan fan. Miss Walter. Excellent concert and post. Sound is great. Thanks a bunch.
Saw them @ the Beacon 2014/16 and 18, great opening acts too; Russell Malone,
Peter Bernstein,
Ricky Lee Jones.
Man, what a hell of a show and a hell of a lineup. To see Donald Fagen/Steely Dan live is awesome to begin with, but to have the rarities and unreleased songs played like this is a treat.
I was AT THIS SHOW!! When I heard they were doing a Rarities Night in 2011 in addition to the usual complete album nights they had been doing for a few years at the Beacon, I decided I had to splurge and fly to NYC from the midwest to see this in person. I am so glad I did. Surprisingly I snagged a pretty much center front balcony seat for face value, so the weekend wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be.
Before the concert I found out there was a pre show gathering at a pub on Amsterdam a few blocks from the theater. Dan fans from all over, pretty cool to talk to other diehards. Of course we all speculated on what they might pull out, since there was no leak ahead of time and this was a one time deal. You Got the Bear and Second Arrangement were frequently mentioned. I was only recently familiar with those outtakes, I finally found a source before the concert to listen to them, but didn't know them intimately.
My wishes were Dr Wu, which I had luckily heard in 2009 in Chicago, and knew then it was a true rarity. I also hoped for Here at the Western World, Any Major Dude, Pearl of the Quarter, a full band Razor Boy. Everyone's Gone to the Movies and Your Gold Teeth II would have been cool too.
Thank god we got Second Arr, The Bear, Doctor Wu, Pearl of the Quarter, plus This All too Mobile Home, a different Jack of Speed, and American Lovers, which went way back and I wasn't familiar with then.
What we didn't need to hear in a Rarities Show was Hey Nineteen, Time Out of Mind, Peg, Bodhisattva, and other well worn frequently played tunes. That was my only disappointment, I thought Rarities Night really meant a night of ALL Rarities!! But, hard to nitpick when I got to hear and see what I did.
They have played Dr Wu only 7 times ever, and I was at TWO of the SEVEN in my about 20 SD shows. They haven't played Wu since this concert. They don't play Pearl too often, except on "Dawn of the Dan" nights, so it was cool to hear that tune. I was very surprised no Western World, which is even less played than Wu. I thought it would have been a perfect night to pull that one out. No Any Major Dude, which is pretty rare.
What a night though, and well worth going to. Thanks for assembling what you could of this once in a lifetime time concert!! Second Arrangement especially sounded sweet!
Wow, I had no idea the Second Arrangement had ever been played live before - all amazing, thanks!
This was the first and ONLY time they played it. I was there!
I heard it immediately. Some kind soul taped it and uploaded it to the trackers. I believe this was originally a iPhone camera video and the audio and video have been re-mastered. Technology and music got me so excited I no longer sleep at night too busy loving life.
This whole video is a gem - thanks a million for all the work you've put into this Dan! I love so many of these more unusual songs and the audio quality is shockingly good. You Got The Bear and The Second Arrangement are real gifts indeed. Bravo to this whole thing.
Doctor Wu live !!
My life is now complete.
Superb. Thank you
this has made my entire day...days
holy fucking shit, that is without a doubt my favourite version of Jack of Speed I've ever heard
Ty Had asked about a live Dr Wu. Was at this show. Walter had comped me a ticket . Ty.
Great night even with Donald w ?Laryngitis. Rip Walter. Gentleman scholar and hell of a humble human being.
Doctor Wu was their all time best.
Great choice !
Dr. Wu!! My most favorite Dan tune !!!
YESSSSSSS !!
mine too along with western world
Thanks for this gift! Even better than the Gold Teeth I threw out. Twice! :->
Jim Beards solo piano piece is a stunner! I detect some Maurice Ravel influence. My favorite!
I only came to this video to hear and see the second arrangement and wow it was worth it. Outstanding song. Those 'One last goodbye' backing vocals hit me in the feels every single time. Now to watch the rest!
Even on Rarities Night, Becker & Fagen still refuse to perform my favorite song from 1975's "Katy Lied" album -- "Any World (That I'm Welcome To)." It features some of the best piano played on any SD recording (and one of Fagen's finest lead vocals), but it's been consistently ignored in concert as far back now as "The New York Rock & Soul Revue" of 1989-92 -- when Michael McDonald was actually onstage and could have provided his unforgettable backing vocals from that song.
I believe the original recording had Michael Omartian on piano, his parts are always phenomenal. It's not one of my favorite songs, but it'd be nice to see them do it live a little more frequently. Donald did a totally rearranged version during some of his '06 solo tour before dropping it because it wasn't going over well, and then they broke it out again a few years later during a Steely Dan show and had Jeff Young sing it and that was a mess too. I'm guessing they liked the song, but felt it was missing something and kept experimenting with it.
@@djbelc01 Thanks for the reply. My wife and I saw their "Pretzel Logic" tour stop at the U. of Toledo in April 1974, where we were introduced to singer Michael McDonald more than a year before he would join The Doobie Brothers. In early 1975 I fell hard for the sound of his voice in the chorus of "Any World" and still think the vocal outro to that song (propelled by the dynamic drumming of The Wrecking Crew's Hal Blaine) is one of the most exhilarating finishes to any SD recording. My biggest gripe is that Fagen and McDonald have shared the stage dozens of times since the studio recording and have never performed it.
Also one of my favourites, in fact, in the crazy mixed world we live in at the moment, it has almost become my mantra.
That song is fine, but the chorus really peeves me off
one of the back singers is a real goddess!))
Carolyn Leonhart. Agreed 100%.
Wondering if she is currently married.
@@rpguitar Jim Beard had the best seat in the house, for sure.
It was electric that night!! Thanks✌
Really nice moment around 48:00 when Fagen likes Becker’s line and answers it on melodica.
Thank you Dan! Your channel is rapidly becoming my favourite! And as others have said, good audio and video of The Second Arrangement is pure gold. Thanks!
Awesome Work on this.Thank You.
For authenticity Jon should be pictured with his Tele for Hey Nineteen. Seen them twice. Can't really get that opening sound from a Paul.
Yep, Jon Herington doesn't play his Tele very often with Steely Dan (usually he sticks to something with humbuckers), but when he does, he really makes those single coils sparkle.

Hard to pick a favorite from this show…the band really nailed American Lovers. Powerful performance.
Walter taking a dig at Skunk during the band intros..."we don't wanna come to town with a band that can't remember the arrangements of the tunes...back in the '70s and there's guys just flying past you into the audience with leather jackets...and flame-colored tattoos on their body..."
well they did play Jack of Speed that night too
I'm really excited, i ve been searching for this for a long long time and now its really a dream come true. Thank You for making it possible. God bless You!!!!!
The video is also great. A live CD version of this show would be a dream come true !
Dan, you did a phenomenal job with this. The audio has definitely never sounded better !!
Just seen this. You've done a great job Dan. Thank You.
Thanks Dan, I enjoyed listening and viewing the great images and performances. I appreciate your channel!
Wish this was on vinyl😭 so beautiful. Thank you Don!
HOLY SHIT
Very cool, thanks!
Great! Thanks for this sharing ❤️
Thank you.
great show including the ''demos an lost recordings'
Amazing show. Hearing The Bear and Second Arrangement is out of this world. I just wish that they would have played Glamour Profession. I wonder what the story was? I may be wrong but I never remember them playing it when Walter was in the band but as soon as he passed, it became a live staple that the Donald Dan plays at most shows.
You're in luck! Glamour Profession wasn't one of their setlist staples, but they actually did perform it live quite a bit while Walter was still with us. I have four videos on my channel where they performed it: 1996 Manassas, VA; 1996 George, WA; 2000 Manassas, VA; and 2008 Cincinnati, OH.
@@djbelc01 Wow, thank you. That makes my day. I will check them out. You really are the Dan Man.
They did start playing it when they did Gaucho Album Nights. Mostly in NYC and Boston, maybe Chicago.
Thank you so much for this!
Thank you so much for posting this, Dan! Was it really Walter playing that guitar solo in Aja? I saw SD in Concord, CA years ago and I DO remember him taking quite a few solos that night and being pretty seriously blown away at how good HE was! In any case, what a joy to hear this recording. Thanks for all of your hard work to get it assembled and posted on RUclips. 🙂
Yep, Aja has a dueling lead guitar thing going on, Walter and Jon take turns, and I matched up the slideshow with who played which part. Walter was a very underrated guitar player. It was sad to hear his playing change as his health started to decline, but if you go back and check out the shows I've posted from the '93 tour through around '09, you'll hear Walter playing some really interesting and exciting solos.
Man, I was really hoping to see Midnight Cruiser here. I've never heard them do that song live.
Good news, that song was a staple of their setlists during the 1996 tour. Here's a concert that includes it: ruclips.net/video/O8uxw2f8jDc/видео.html
@@djbelc01 Thanks! Never seen/heard Brooklyn Owes the Charmer live Maybe because Donald didn’t sing it ?
Yeah, they have done Brooklyn a few times, but not often. A couple years ago when guitarist Connor Kennedy was part of the touring band, he handled the vocals on it and did a great job. I remember seeing a video of it at one point, but I can't find any currently on RUclips.
You got the Bear should have been on Gaucho. Its too good!
Too bad CDs weren't invented yet. Bear, Second Arrangement, Kulee Baba, I Can't Write Home About You could have made the cut!
Your Gold Teeth ✨️
I'm here for it.
The Bear?!? omg 🥲
It’s okay to put the camera on the horns when they’re soloing. Sheesh.
have they ever played doctor wu live before or after this? i havent come by any footage of it :(
They have played Doctor Wu live very, very little. Only 7 times total from what I have been able to find. I do have an audience video recording of it from the 8/25/2009 Los Angeles show, I am not sure how much I can improve it unfortunately since the recording is almost completely lacking any low frequencies, but I will certainly try at some point to clean it up.
I’d like to see Turn That Heartbeat Over Again but don’t know who would sing it
Why is my favorite, Dr Wu, a rarity?!
Only Donald knows....
'Rarity' might apply to tunes the band didn't play live. Remember that they ceased touring in their early days and when they returned many years later their repertoire never included some of their best-loved numbers.
They have only played Dr Wu 7 times. I've seen the last 2 times they played it. 2011 Rarities Night in NYC, and 2009 in Chicago. I figured I had a good chance of seeing it at Rarities Night. At the Chicago show in 2009 it was a complete surprise. They haven't played it since. For some reason that DF has never explained that I know of.
Since its right up there as my favorite tune aside from Aja, I was extremely fortunate to see it performed 2 of the 7 times they've played it. Here at the Western World was another one I figured they might do at Rarities Night, surprised they didn't play that gem.
Why do they never play the Caves Of Altamira??????????
One of their best songs! They do not play it often these days, but they did it every night during the '03 tour, and at least it shows up whenever they play the entire Royal Scam album.
@@djbelc01 Good to see Doctor Wu in this set. Any Major Dude Will Tell You is always left out as well. Although they pull Out Pretzel Logic out every now and then, but not enough.
It was a very pleasant surprise to find out they included Any Major Dude on the Northeast Corridor live album.
the version on that hollywood bowl concert with the orchestra is pretty solid
Keith Carlock looks about 14 years old.
Keith us an extremely bad ass drummer!
There is no way to get video footage of the entire concert? It just doesn't make any sense that people only filmed or took videos of certain songs and not the entire concert. You would figure with all those people at the concert that there should be more footage of the concert than the ones you have for those ten specific songs.
It's such a shame that we didn't get more/better recordings from this concert. What little footage I was able to find was mostly stuff that was posted to RUclips in the past but had been deleted. Luckily I've saved every scrap of recording I've come across from this show.
At least the audio is decent. Could've been much worse considering.
Wait, is that Woody Allen playing clarinet in back?
Does his voice always sound this "shot" now - OR was he just having an "off" night ??????
Sorry but I can't listen to this! Still very poor sound quality and I can't listen to my favorite group on this video!
Sound is fine.
If getting into sound quality ruins your ability to enjoy decently recorded gold like this, it isn't worth it.
