  • What took away the NBA mighty mouse's opportunity in the 90s/early 2000s? Damon Stoudamire was the first franchise player for the Toronto Raptors, a star in college, had a great first 2 years with Toronto, then everything changed. Was it because he was overshadowed talent wise in Portland? He had to sacrifice in order to win? Or he just wasn't as good as Toronto made him look? Whatever the case, many expected Damon Stoudamire to have been better than his time in the league was. What do you think stunted his Growth? Here's what I think.

Mighty Mouse! Imagine if he stayed in Toronto and played with Vince and T-Mac. Sometimes going home home isn't the best choice unless you have the maturity to handle it. My Rockets were also trying to trade trade for him at the time. Perhaps if he'd went there and be the face of a post Olajuwon era Houston, he would have continued on the star path he'd started in Toronto.

True story: there was a make-your-own-card machine at my local grocery store back in the late-'90s. So I made a Raptors-themed card to send to Damon, proclaiming him as my favorite player at the time. Unfortunately, it came back because he was gone to Portland. (Actually, it was because I didn't know anything about international postage at age 11, but let's stick with the first one lol.) On the bright side, I did get to see him live with the Grizzlies when I first moved to Memphis.

When I see a Portland jersey all I think about is how sabonis used to pass to stoudemire when stoudemire would run past him used him as an off ball screen to get open then pop the eight foot shot. Which was good for about six buckets a night cause sabonis had bad knees but could pass anywhere on the court . While stoudemire was starting to slow down but could still reach top speeds without the ball for a quick catch and shoot play. Got used to seeing it too great chemistry.

Damn JC, you hit this right on the head.
He was never supposed to be a top 10 pick, but uh....Isaiah Thomas. Then you put him on a team with luminaries like Acie Earl and Zan Tabak, he has to play 40 minutes a game, he's getting coached by Darrel Walker who only got the job because....ISAIAH THOMAS, and we all fell in love with the dude. But by his own admission he was a scoring guard in an era when Portland needed a pure point to keep all those mouths fed.
Damon would probably be an All Star in this era.

I believe that he should have kept his mouth shut and wait until his contract runs out before voicing his frustration to the upper office.

You should start doing teams such as the 90’s magic or the early 2000’s kings

yeah, in that era he had to compete against guys like Steve Smith, Kevin Johnson, Gary Payton, Jason Kidd, John Stockton, and Rod Strickland were higher regarded and get all of accolades that goes with it in the western conference. Of course you just did Nick Van Exel, which he and Damon Stoudamire can never get elevated above any of those guys to be on the All Star western conference teams. Or even All-NBA teams.

I got to see him play the Clippers at the Sports Arena his rookie year. Please believe me when I say NO ONE could keep up with him. Because the arena was so dinky, the court-side seats seemed like they were practicality on the court. Damon put on a show and almost singlehandedly defeated the Paper Clips (as they were once known). Van Exel was my personal favorite but, no lie, Stoudamire was my mom’s favorite player of the 90s. He was definitely in my top ten competitors. He was a warrior for a cool minute and is one of the hardest players to beat on NBA2K. Much respect to Mighty Mouse.
EDIT: Have you considered Cedric Ceballos?

I grew up in 90s, it's funny looking at the basketball cards I collected. Looking at Damon, or Eddie Jones, Chris Webber , starberry, Kerry kittles, Allan Houston, Kemp. I couldn't give them away, but I think it's why I see 90s basketball as the best era.

The little quick guards changed the game in the late 90s early 2000s...Damon and Iverson were compared a lot and was a great matchup... he was a killer in Toronto and was a All-Star🤟🏾‼️

One of the best “Stunted Growth’s” you’ve done, in my opinion.
I thought myself a student of the game, but overlooked the fact that in Damon’s first couple of years, he played against back up players. Therefore inflating his numbers.
    Good pick up. Nice.

Damon was great, I watched his whole career. Nothing stunned his growth. The only thing I can say is that ones he came home to Portland he became more laid back and didn't need to be the number 1 guy option, because Rasheed Wallace was already established as that guy. Also the team had a full roster of all stars and up an coming talent like Sabonis, Wallace, Pippen, Steve Smith, Detlef Shrempf, Jermaine O'neal, Brian Grant, Randolph, Bonzi Wells and more. It was one of my favorite teams and follow them thru the whole season. Damon never needed to prove himself to all these players to be the number 1 option instead he wanted to fit in the team and help them in what they needed. He was a very unselfish great player. This video is showing false facts.
