Also there's a lot of players who were sacrificed so that Kobe could have the room to become the Kobe he's remembered as. People forget that, they sometimes tell the story as if Kobe was good from the start.
This is so true. When you remove players it creates more shots for the ones you have. Kobe barely met a shot he didn't like and Jerry Buss wanted the team to be centered around him once he grew into himself. The rise was unbelievable though.

That George Karl story is hilarious! Two of the most unlikable personalities of the era giving each other the business. To put into perspective how much of a knucklehead Nick could be, Karl later drafted another Cincinnati attitude issue, Dontonio Wingfield. Good luck finding a scouting report on that dude that even mentions his game. He might have been the first freshman to ever get drafted in that era, he couldn't even cut it at Cincy which took every problem child after Tark left UNLV. One of the worst graduation rates of all time.

Oddly enough, for as many personality flaws people thought van Exel had, hehas turned into a pretty solid NBA assistant coach. Trae Young credits van Exel for helping him become a much better defender. It wouldn't surprise me if van Exel becomes a head coach sometime in the future.

That George Karl story is hilarious! Two of the most unlikable personalities of the era giving each other the business.
To put into perspective how much of a knucklehead Nick could be, Karl later drafted another Cincinnati attitude issue, Dontonio Wingfield. Good luck finding a scouting report on that dude that even mentions his game. He might have been the first freshman to ever get drafted in that era, he couldn't even cut it at Cincy which took every problem child after Tark left UNLV. One of the worst graduation rates of all time.

Oddly enough, for as many personality flaws people thought van Exel had, hehas turned into a pretty solid NBA assistant coach. Trae Young credits van Exel for helping him become a much better defender.
