- I do think his Growth was Stunted though. As a basketball player, he had a lot of expectations to become at least an all star. In the 98 NBA draft, he was the 8th overall pick, ahead of a few guys that are sure fire HOFers. Before that he was a star at hometown St Louis where he only stayed for a year. Before that, he was a star in high school that became a McDonald's All American and if you ask me, was the best player on the floor even though he didn't win MVP. Baron Davis, Lamar Odom nor Kenny Gregory (who won it) looked better than Hughes. Fast forward to the league, it sucked he had to play in the spotlights of so many superstars. It dimmed his career and may have ultimately caused him not to develop into what he could've become in the NBA. He still had a solid career and off the court he's still doing some amazing things with the help of his mother. A St Louis Gem, that's probably the best to ever come from there. Do you think Larry Hughes was a #bust ?

Hughes lasted 14 years in the NBA and I don't think he wasn't ever not a starter so he definitely isn't a bust. I remember him coming out of Saint Louis...he was 6'5, athletic and had that extended hesitation crossover ala' Iverson and Kobe and just had skills that made people think he was going to be a Kobe-like player. But all in all he had a good career, made his bread, took care of his family, and at least he can say he did lead the NBA in something.

Started over 80 percent of his whole career, your way off. Just about every team wanted him to play the point when he was a two guard, with Cleveland promising him the two spot then, when they say how much better he was then Eric Snow, they made him the point.
I remember Larry, I love what he meant and the difference he made. My dad knew some of his family so I cheered for him growing up. I remember reading that his upside was Kobe.

Honestly, there's like a cliche that it's up to the player how great he wants to be. He never wanted to be a great player, he just wanted to give his family a better life. Basketball was just a job to him, he put up numbers because that's what the team wanted not what he neccesarily wanted from himself. He fulfilled all his expectations and yeah at least he was a decent player at that.

@@DC180PP true ,,,eventho his outside shot was adequate most of his career, however he still played with a smooth pace and was very calculated getting to his spots on the whether it was midrange, the wing 3point shot of a tear drop floater in the lane,when he choose not to dunk around defenders. Overall he was a C+ til B grade player that was a borderline all star that overachieved slightly more then underachieved

If you average 23 at any point, you're not a bust. He's kind of like Andrew wiggins, in that his career, just wasn't as expected and as you watched him throughout, you would just reset and lower expectations.

Great vid, the problem with alot of fans are they believe EVERY player is supposed to be a superstar, star, all star, etc...and its unrealistic. They dont realize it's a reason why guys like Bron, KD, Steph & players like that are SPECIAL. They're just different, you can't hold every player to their standard. Larry Hughes was nice fr, gotta respect his career.

I was very excited when the cavs picked him up. Only bad thing is he didn’t fit well with Lebron. Lebron holds the ball alot and kicks it out to shooter. Larry was really never a good shooter. He was good on the Wizards, because that Wizards team plays with a fast pace game.
@Richard People don’t like to admit this but Lebron holds a lot of people’s game back. There’s been too many instances where a player was very productive before joining Lebron, then production dropped as Lebrons teammate, then production rose back up after leaving Lebrons team. Only people who really benefit from playing with him are spot up shooters.

Larry Hughes was 1 of my long time requests and 1 of my favorite non Allstars(along with Jamal Crawford)that had potential to play the game. Hughes basically was a play making shooting guard where his disceptive crossover moves at times and his overall passing was better then his outside 3pt shot but Injuries and bad timing playing with LEBRON's ball dominate point forward 1- four flat offense in Cleveland cramped Hughes style and play off the ball .Consistency with Hughe's shot outside of midrange or his mental focus to stay offensively aggressive was his only glaring weakness eventhough he would catch fire and light up the Stat sheet. You can't blame LeBron for Cleveland running the offense through him, bub. Larry hughes compared to LeBron is not even a talking point plus it was obvious ya boi Larry was on a team with a player who was basically doing almost everything. Calling bron a ballhog sounds like sour grapes champ, the matter of the fact was there's a reason why the Cavs ran the offense through LeBron and even then that's no excuse as to why larry couldn't make an impact during his run with the Cavs. He could've been the second best player on the team, great players learn to adapt to they're surroundings (correct?) so no excuses should be made in this scenario. If he was as good as you claim he was then Larry hughes would've been mentioned as one of the best Wing player's but obviously that didn't happen, not every player despite they're draft pick is meant to be *That Guy* and even if he was a one time all star it wouldn't make that much of a difference because people would have to actually talk about and consider him an all star caliber player at that time and at that time especially 2000s was better player's at his position. @@IllMatic97 most of what you are saying is true however Hughes was averaging 22.ppg the season before he came with a broken finger on his shooting hand while Gilbert Arenas was Averaging 25plus a game, he had to play in the back court with mechanical ass Eric Snow that didn't have No court vision Damon Jones and boobi couldn't take more then 2dribbles without pulling up for a shot or getting ripped others were a bunch of bench warmers in the lineup .I predicted he wouldn't average over 17ppg and he barely averaged 15.5 which was awkward along with alot of behind the scenes drama stuff that went on that summer with him business wise with cavs organization and personal. He never seem head strong under pressure off the court that may have affected his production, I always said they should have got Cuttino Mobley or Eddie Jones both were very good 3and D catch and shoot players. Or they needed Mo Williams at pg spots year before they traded Hughes to balance out the back court as a buffer because of his shoot 1st and uptempo style that Larry could have meshed with better opposite side of Bron, However going to Cleveland definitely ended Hughes career on paper we all thought he would have panned out as a 20pg sidekick how he did in Washington and he averaged 23pg in the playoffs with them.i was just pulling for the underdog but he was a Bust in Cleveland however he had a stellar career prior overall.
I will admitt I am sour grapes on how lebron ran to Miami and how Durant ran to the warriors however looking back him and Westbrook would not have won in OKC unless got a different 3rd player IMO

As a teenager, I was sour grapes that LeBron took his talents to Miami. As a grown man now, I understand that he did what was best to put himself in a position to compete for a championship just like many players did. How is it fair that a prime Shaq left in Free Agency to go play with Kobe and a bunch of big name veterans? How is it fair that Carmelo in 2011 allegedly requested a trade to New York where he ended up there with Amare Stoudemire and Jr Smith? How is it fair that Garnett originally was trying to play with Kobe in 07? Stars were either joining up with each other or trying to join up with each-other way before LeBron joined up with his friends in Miami.

Larry Hughes should've been an NBA All-Star. Especially, with the Washington Wizards. If Philadelphia never traded him. The 76ers would've given the 2001 76ers a major boost in the 2001 Finals. Offensively and defensively! Would've been a better matchup on Kobe. Than that of Raja Bell. Maybe both of them would've benefited from each other.
Lakers most likely still win 4-1 or 4-2 but Larry probably help get the 7ers back to the finals.

I had fun watching Larry Hughes play like for real. Never knew that was his motivation, and that’s kinda amazing in a way. Can’t at all knock a man for wanting to take care of his family. And, besides, he was a legit hooper. Great vid.
Saw him play at an NBA Summer League in 99; his athleticism was impressive to say the least. All in all, I don't think he was a bust; solid player with good defensive skills.

I didn't know Larry Hughes was playing for his younger brother to get great medical treatment. His best season was with the Wizards he had his moments with the Cavaliers they put him at the point one time and he was flourishing then comes the injuries. His best game as a Cavalier was when he dropped 40 on the Utah Jazz dueling Deron Williams.
He was an all-star once but didn't play in the game because he was injured that was his lone season in Washington

I was hoping Lebron would have chose Cuttino Mobley, Jamal Crawford, or Eddie Jones that 2005/06 season because all 3 had better outside shots and were more aggressive offensively than Hughes, which would have helped Bron and the Cavs do much better

I liked him when he played here in Philly! I thought he had potential. I was PISSED at Billy King & Larry Brown when I found out who the 6ers could have gotten to play with AI!! I'm about to call it a night so I'll come back and watch this video tomorrow for sure and I'll leave my thoughts. But a few minutes ago, I was looking at Hughes stat because some crazy Jordan fan tried to hype up Larry Hughes saying "LeBron couldn't make it out the 1st round without Hughes" as if Hughes was to Lebron like how Scottie was to Jordan. Lol. I know that the stat sheets don't tell the whole story but what I am seeing is that Hughes shot a career 41 percent from the field prior to playing in Cleveland when he got that finger injury half way thru that 05-06 season. He shot a career 40 percent from the field. That sounds like bust no matter how you slice it. But I'll check out your video on him tommorow.

All makes sense why he was smooth on the court. He had a different mission ! Real one for that n he definitely had impact in the city of St. Louis because back in 2003 I played in New Orleans AAU nationals 5th grade ! We played ST. Louis ymca bird they had red jerseys . Majority of them had braids lol they was nice to they beat us n got 3 place in nationals n we got 5th place . #BallWasLife🤙🏽

Hughes played under the weight of his younger brother having a heart transplant and losing him during his 13-year career; very close to his younger brother, Larry knew what was most important. 13 years in the NBA, starting over 80 percent of those games, a great career.
I remember he went on a tear one year in G.S. when he had like 2 or 3 50 point games.

I think he needed more time to develop in Philly also, his combo coming off the bench with Ai was lethal. They basically traded him for kukoc who was then traded with Ratliff for Mutombo only cuz Ratliff was injured during that push for a chip in 01. I would’ve kept him and Tim Thomas who led all rookies in 3pt% that trio would’ve could’ve should’ve been dangerous #ijs

Definitely not a bust . There's life after sports he saved his lil Bros life made a better life for his family . He got his 🍞 and still helps his community . He had a productive career . Yet he's still doing great things in life . Big ups to Larry Hughes 👊
