Sixers thought it was a good idea to get rid of Larry Hughes & Stack but double down on Snow & McKie. That was their bright idea. I love Mutumbo but Ratliff & Kukoc would have been more valuable in those 2001 Finals. Not only could Dikembe not stop Shaq, he couldn't score on him either. Kukoc could have opened the floor up more for AI and Ratliff could bang as much as Dikembe but he could also run better. That was the wrong trade.
Agreed! Also one of the key factors they lost the finals were that they missed too many shots from beyond the arc while many of the Lakers players including Rick Fox, Derek Fisher among others had great shooting nights from deep. And Toni Kukoc could‘ve been crucial when it comes to giving his team space.
Right, but Theo Ratliff got injured and Mutombo was available. Actually rather than the 2001 rosters, the decisions post 2001 Finals are disappointing. Sixers had quality role players such as Speedy Claxton, Raja Bell, Matt Harpring, Samuel Dalembert, John Salmons, Kyle Korver and Willie Green in different times during later Iverson years. But they never could bring a second star. Mutombo was the closest. Champion teams are built by not only retaining the superstars but also retaining the crucial role players. The entire team is a champion. Overall Billy King did a lackluster job to surround Iverson with stars. Then he mortgaged the future of Nets for aging stars and is now out of the league...
