  • @SamuelDJCox
    @SamuelDJCox 2 года назад +37

    I think THIS single scene is probably the closest to the heart of the whole show.
    Everything in the show concludes to "letting go"... the greatest part of letting go is learning incredible personal strength and to have hope and faith in your life.
    The man of science is a great person to be to let us survive, but to make life worth living and for us to feel happy, with purpose and meaning... to not feel lost... we have to find that incredible inner strength "faith" in ourselves.
    Jack never wants to believe because it makes no pragmatic or logical sense, but it's also more because all believing in something does is that it can ultimately make you unhappy in the long run... because the majority of things we hope or want for in our lives that we have to have faith we can get and deserve more often do not come to us and so many times our faith is not rewarded. Jack never believes because he sees no sense for it but also because he truly does not want to and is afraid to.
    Locke completely summarises it when he crystal clear explains it to Jack that just because Locke always is trying to believe does not mean that it is ever easier... and it never is... the majority of people in the world that look at good, kind hearted people who have incredible faith in the best of other people... they see people who on the surface appear to have an incredible unbreakable faith... but the truth is that the strongest of people who have that faith battle with it every single day. This is the part of Locke that Jack never sees nor has he yet learned or come to truly respect.
    Science, sense and logic is great and takes us great places, but there are so many incredible things that we can create and achieve when we can make courageous steps that are not always sensible and safe.
    The power of hope in face of all conflict is the greatest strength...
    Great, incredible scene!

    I think the button resembles prayer. Locke follows faith, as Jack follows science. The island 🏝️ is a place they were brought to, to be healed. It’s not death, but a special place. I also think this, because Mr. Eko was intrigued by pressing the button, 🖥️ and that the hieroglyphs in the Swan translate to underworld.

    The thing that always bugged me about the way the hatch went is earlier in this episode Jack's Key around his neck is obviously effected by magnetism which Jack sees, Saiyid goes into the crawl space and compares the amount of concrete over to Chernobyl, as well as Desmonds comment about his fillings hurting. Jack being the man of science there's evidence to show it could very well be real.
    It bugged me later on in S2 after Locke visits the Pearl that he then thinks its all a trick, despite everything that points to the sawn button being real.

    I think Locke enjoyed exerting this power over Jack. Jack didn't really believe it mattered, but Locke put it on him to choose whether to let the timer hit 0 and see what happens or reset it. Jack came off as being 100% sure it didn't matter, but when Locke said 'fine let it count down. Push it or don't.', a faint .01% chance of something horrifically bad happening crept into his mind.
    Locke didn't ever need Jack to wholly accept what he was asking of him, he just needed to prove to Jack that he accepts it even a little bit.

    • @anitelufalemei4200
      @anitelufalemei4200 Год назад +2

      I don’t think Locke “enjoyed” doing this over jack. I think Locke genuinely just doesn’t “want” to do it alone. Everything else you said is correct.

      John wanted Jack to be a believer.

    • @random-nz7dy
      @random-nz7dy 3 года назад +4

      This conversation isn't really about the button. It's about John being a person of faith and sensing Jack is conflicted by science vs faith.
      He's trying to prove a point that when it comes down to it Jack is going to push it and listen to that faith
      Keep in mind John Locke woke up on this island not paralyzed. He knows that there's something deeper and greater going on. So the situation with the button, he interpreted as something necessary. Because of his miraculous healing he believed he was brought there for a reason. And wanted to convince Jack that that was the case for all of them.
      It's not easy for either of them to push the button and start putting their faith in something they don't understand.
