Yeah but he was in a lot of pain over the loss of his own daughter in that moment. You can see it in his voice, the anger, the thirst for vengeance. He wanted Charles to lose what he had. The key to that scene is the appearance of Penny's son Charlie which causes Ben's love of children to come to the forefront and momentarily kills his anger until Desmond gets to him
This is straight up two of the most amazing closings for the two most powerful and emotional characters on the show, in the scene you can clearly recognize Ben, in genuine remorse for what he did, and Locke’s understanding of how he feels that. And the final line of “goodbye Ben” makes the entire scene for me because it’s so genuine and you know that’s probably the last time they’ll see each other. And the music along with it is some of the best I’ve ever seen on television. Jesus Christ this is brilliant.
It’s a fantastic and amazing way to say farewell to the two best and most interesting characters on lost, and yes I love the other characters a lot too, but man this scene and Ben and Locke.
This is such a strong and important scene. LOST is such a special show, that no other show will live up to. To find an ending must have been the hardest, but they found the best ending possible and created the most beautiful ending an show ever.
This scene proves that the island was ALL real, because Hurley says to Ben he was a good partner in taking care of the island in place of Jacob, so they lived a full life after Jack died
@@DarknessIsThePath That Christian dialogue really makes me think the writers added it for clarity sake. The lines are right to the point and direct. "Yeah, I’m real. You’re real. Some of them before you, some long after you" It's literally spoon fed to the audience, to clear up any lingering questions. Yet some people think the whole show is purgatory.

@@bajscastTrue, it was spelled out clearly in the finale, but what I think really confused people was the b-roll footage of the plane wreckage on the beach during the final credits of the original airing. They just had some footage of the wreckage they shot before they had to remove it from the beach, and they thought by showing it, it would be a good way for viewers to “catch their breath” before the next program began. Unfortunately, because there were no cast members in the footage, many people took that to be the final “clue” that no one survived the crash. Not hard to see how people were confused. Personally, the fact that there were no dead bodies strewn across the beach (and if you look closely you can see the tarp from Jack’s original medical tent flapping in the breeze) in the footage negates that whole theory.
I feel like if they made any spin-off shows of Lost, I would really want it to be about Hurley and Ben as the new protectors of the island. Or about the Dharma initiative, that would be awesome.
Nah not the dharma initiative, that would suck. Maybe if we didn't know everything that happened to them but nah. Because we already know that they all died and how it happened and pretty much everything about them. But Hurley and Ben being the protectors would be amazing. You can tell they become pretty good friends when Hurley said to him "you were a good number 2"
Omg, it’d have to be Hurley, Walt and Ben just havin fun fixin up the island, very sitcom-esque, no heavy drama - just those clowns goofin off :) I’d fucking watch the shit out of that.
I just finished the series recently and am still kinda sorting everything out but I feel like for all we know Ben and Hugo spent decades on that island as 1 and 2. And who knows how many more people came through the island in that time. Point is, I'd love to know more about their time there and who replaced them.
I wonder how long they lived for because with Ben Linus as his advisor he probably made him immortal too until they found new people to watch over the island. I love the look on his face when he greets Hurley you can tell they were friends for a really long time.
In this afterlife world they created for themselves to let go and move on, John’s baggage is what paralyzes him here. When Jack Wakes him up, he can walk again. So powerful!
this is why ben is my favourite character from lost. because michael emerson's portrayal of him makes it so powerful... look at his eyes, you can see everything. pain, happiness, regret.
I still remember the shock when, during season 6, I suddenly realised Ben had become my favourite character. But my god, he was so wonderful. And this scene always breaks me. He wasn't ready to move on, he still has redeeming to do. But he'll enter that church when he's ready.
watching again at the end of November 2022, and it's still just as impactful as the first time I watched the whole series. this will be probably the 15th time I've gone through it completely, and it is still a mystery. I wished it would have kept going and never ended....
Ben is my favourite character and the actor is amazing. And I guess he isn't ready yet to leave.. and he has Alex back now. And I smiled while Locke said he forgives him.
Holy shit I didn't even grasp that. The idea that teacher Ben became enlightened in this alternate life and aware of his previous life as Island Ben. And that he now had an entirely different outlook on Alex and Rousseau. So much to sift through with this show.
This is the purgatory, every soul go there, real Christian and people who didn't hurt anyone and believed in true love will stay there just to meet true friends, the exception here is Ben who betrayed anyone for his purpose to control people. He say "for a while" but it's a secret of the here after how long will be there... If you see Michael who shoots Ana Lucia and Libby isn't there AT ALL... Don't need any imagination where he went, sadly for him. Can God bless everyone, he loves each one of you. ❤️🙏❤️🙏❤️
@@roninroma There's an epilogue clip to the series that addresses Michael's situation, Hurley's in charge of the island and knows Michael is stuck there, and Hurley cares and does something about it.
This "place" is not purgatory but more of a "way station". Ben stayed by choice. He couldn't quite accept who he had been in his life. He had to sort his actions out. That's what makes this so damn beautiful. He personally wasn't ready and wasn't being judged by some egotistic overlord.
shadowofthestatue I don't want to taint your sentiment, I think your comment is poignant. That said, I've always thought that God would be much more merciful to me that I would ever be to myself. Such a beautiful scene in the ending of my favorite show. My favorite characters, Locke and Ben…love Hurley, too. I understand why Ben wasn’t ready to go in the church…he definitely had some things to work out, lol. All props to Michael Emerson and Terry O’Quinn for making these complex, flawed, but deeply human characters come to life on our screen. Miss you, Lost…I’m glad you ended it when you did, and I feel privileged to be one of those who waited every week (or months on months on months) for a new episode…trying to figure out the many mysteries. I don’t know how anyone cannot think this wasn’t the greatest drama ever made.
that smile and his tone of voice when Hurley comes by... It just shows how his time together influenced him, made him a better man and how thankful he is for that time. Small touch but so beautiful.
Kathy Horton I’m currently rewatching, in season 3 now on Amazon! Best show ever made in my opinion, would have been very hard to watch pre ‘binge watch’ age though!!
even when Locke forgives him, Ben is not ready to move on yet because we often forget that John's death is not the only one he's more or less guilty of and that he regrets. He had a very strong bond to Alex and we also saw it in the flash-sideways-reality. My favorite interpretation of the ending is that Ben is waiting for Alex. He can't move on before she forgives him.
One of my favorite scenes in any show ever. I think the way the writers handled the ending of Ben’s character was particularly satisfying. He can do whatever he wants but he chooses to stay behind because he’s finally able to reflect on how he needs to grow, to redeem, or whatever else Linus is looking for in the sideways. On top of that when Locke says goodbye to him the lighting on his face says it all. Locke the man presented in the show as light and dark finally saying goodbye to his greatest friend / enemy and the way he says “goodbye Ben” feels more like the audience saying it then him. God I love LOST even all these years later.
@@RandomHero_85 I've just binged watched the whole of Lost on Prime after years of the final but always remember that scene, but was cut. Thought I was remembering it wrong. Locke and Ben scene but not the Hurley and Ben scene. Thanks to aadriens , I now know I'm not crazy. But why cut that scene? Its a key part of the closing those characters and hints what happened to them.
I don't exactly remember it all, but there's some tugging at the heart strings hearing that music and seeing the characters interact again. Might have to rewatch it from the start
I've always interpreted this ending to be that Ben hasn't died yet, and is currently the Island's immortal keeper. He's present in spirit because he needs to apologize to Locke, but he's not able to, nor ready to move on yet, serving his penance taking care of the island.
I think, the reason why John decided to forgive Ben for killing him is the fact that Ben gave his death meaning. As Sawyer put it "Locke was scared, even when he pretended he wasn't". John hated being mediocre, he wanted so badly to be special and the island gave him that. When he wasn't able to convince anyone to go back to the island, he knew that he would have to go back to his old boring life, and it affirmed what he had always believed deep down, the fact that he wasn't special at all. Realising his entire life had no purpose, he decided to kill himself. When Ben killed John, he gave his life purpose, to save the island. This is why John is able to forgive Ben, because Ben made him special, and that is all he ever wanted to be.
Not all of them should go to heaven. I mean Said was a cold blood killer and John killed a lot of people. He threw a knife into a woman back and she was only trying to help them. Some of the should go to hell.
Alanmarine1 I do not recall them atoning for anything. At least Ben atoned by working with Harley. You can see how much he changed in the sideways flash episode of Lost. For example he could have become Headmaster at the cost of his daughter (at least he did not know that at the time) going to college or he could step down and his daughter would get a glowing recommendation to any college. He chose the latter. A choice he would never have made in the past. After all did he not let his daughter died. Now John, Said, Sawyer, Claire, Charlie never atoned for their past murderous indiscretions. Said went on to murder a lot of people, John died before he could make up for his actions like killing that innocent girl and Sawyer never atoned for killing an innocent man in the alley way not to mention the consequences of cheating innocent people out of their money guaranteed he did hear his father murder his mother. How many innocent kids grew up to become just another Sawyer. What about killing John’s father in cold blood. Claire killed a man in cold blood with an axe because she believed he took her baby and Charlie murder a defenceless man in cold blood guaranteed he did hang by the neck earlier. Are you telling these people should go to to heaven….
Charity Diary I agree with some of thing you mentioned but I like to interject one thing Ben change began when he starting working with Hurley at the end of season 6. By the time he reach purgatory he was already a changed man. Although it was never shown until 2010 when a small clip was released showing him working with Hurley. A thing he would never would have done in the past. Recall the shadow monster read his mind and realized that he wanted to kill John (although not really John) and become leader again. In that clip he apologised for kidnapping Michael's son. The son forgave him and all three of them head back to the island that is Hurley, Ben and Michael's son. And finally the other's never atoned for their crime they should not be moving on. I think they are moving on to hell. The bad ones.
Bens face lighting up when he sees Hurley and says “Hello Hugo!” is god tier acting, you can see just how much love and respect Ben had for Hurley in those few seconds, they must have had an amazing time together and grown so close when they were running things on the island
When, years later, I met a former schoolmate who was always very unfriendly to me and apologized to me. I remembered John's words and said "if it helps you, I forgive you"
I always hated Ben, he was indeed selfish and jealous of someone because of the little he had. He was a very good character, but not one I'd love, except when he repents at the end. Even there, he does not dare to talk first to Locke.
I like the symbolism of how Ben and John part here. John, having let go of the past completely, is walking confidently. Ben, who still "has some things to work out," is the one sitting, lower.
It's interesting how in many stories that i have Heard the people who have the greatest faith (in anything) are the ones who get killed, at least in this dimension, i'm so glad that in this show they look at them as specials and that Ben could recognize the jeaolusy on himself, i Will always love the character of Jhon, Even more when he forgived Ben, so natural . Loved this show!!!
Having such a huge crush on Ben, this scene made me so unbelievably happy. Ben will get his good ending. He just needs time. And, oh my God, John forgiving Ben is too amazing...this is so, so perfect. Darn it. Now I'm sobbing.
We mustn't forget that Ben killed his own father on the island, as well as directly killing others as well (Jacob: Caesar: Widmore (Penny's father) and also Keamy (who is the guy who killed Ben's 'granddaughter'). That's the reason why Ben wasn't able to move into Heaven with the others in the Church. He had some more atoning to do before that could happen.
I still hear people talking shit about this ending, but it was such powerful and full of symbolism I couldn't care less. Most of the cast absolutely killed it, especially Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn that carried on their shoulders this show with their absolute god tier acting from start to finish. Truly a masterpiece of a series.
Yeah, it wasn't perfect... I have some minor issues with it.... but I do feel it was quite apropos as a finale for Lost... Certainly didn't feel it was a let down!

And I'm crying...
Poor guy. In order to attain enlightenment you've got to let go and forgive yourself for all the things you've done. And in his case he still had a long way to go.
He also wanted to give his daughter the life she never had. That's probably how he forgave himself. His story is one of the best.
Richard Strong exactly. That's why getting sent to hell and being in hell is a paradox. The only way to get out is to accept what you've done and to know you don't deserve punishment. The paradox is A person who doesn't regret what they've done would never get out and the person that realizes what they've done would never feel like they don't deserve to be punished
I gey it knownice explanation
I get that , for sure , being punished now with my life and this girlfriend at my age of 51 , never been this sad , pissed off and lonely ever before
@@FastFordClub damn why what's going on?
One of the reasons I love the finale so much is all of the symbolism/hidden meanings. The writers did a superb job
Flawd no
Justin Y. in my boot? Wot do u mean no.
@@DG-um3xi It means in this case symbolism/hidden meanings is just an out for not having an explanation, there are no hidden meanings because there never were any meanings. Let's make it ambiguous and symbolic so people can make their own interpretation (Translation: We have no interpretation)
"The writers did a superb job" -- OMG, you're an idiot
the writers were totally making this up week to week
they had no fucking idea what they were doing or where they were headed
first name ignorance
I love how Ben says hello to Hugo.
It's funny how in the end the show made us like Ben. I felt so bad for him in this scene. He deserves to move on with the rest of them.
*****
Yea. He's done a lot of fucked up shit. Still felt bad for him in the end.
He was a masterfully crafted character. Went from a bit part to arguably the most popular character on the entire show. Such a complicated mess of a man, he did horrible things but he was always written in a way that he was never irredeemable - you always managed to root for him.
Yeah but he was in a lot of pain over the loss of his own daughter in that moment. You can see it in his voice, the anger, the thirst for vengeance. He wanted Charles to lose what he had. The key to that scene is the appearance of Penny's son Charlie which causes Ben's love of children to come to the forefront and momentarily kills his anger until Desmond gets to him
Nah look at all the bad shit he did. He killed locke! He don't deserve to go.
Not me. I’m glad he evolved but he was right to stay behind.
Very much agree
This is such a strong and important scene. LOST is such a special show, that no other show will live up to. To find an ending must have been the hardest, but they found the best ending possible and created the most beautiful ending an show ever.
"You were special John... and I wasn't."
This scene proves that the island was ALL real, because Hurley says to Ben he was a good partner in taking care of the island in place of Jacob, so they lived a full life after Jack died
Well that and the fact that Christian literally tells that to Jack lmao
@@DarknessIsThePath That Christian dialogue really makes me think the writers added it for clarity sake. The lines are right to the point and direct. "Yeah, I’m real. You’re real. Everything that’s ever happened to you is real. All those people in the church, they’re all real too" and later "Everyone dies sometime, kiddo. Some of them before you, some long after you"
It's literally spoon fed to the audience, to clear up any lingering questions. Yet some people think the whole show is purgatory.
@@JoeMitchell868 Anyone who didn't get it is just people who paid minimal attention, and then people who heard about it from them and then spread the lie like a game of telephone
Just amazing stuff. Over a decade later and nothing has moved me in TV or movies like lost
I feel like there's more about the DA that I'm still curious about, but yess Hurley and Ben running the island would be a great spin off
The Walt actor is at the age where they could do something like this would be really cool to see.
'you were a real good number two'
I wonder how long they lived for because with Ben Linus as his advisor he probably made him immortal too until they found new people to watch over the island. I love the look on his face when he greets Hurley you can tell they were friends for a really long time.
IKR the way he says Hurley.
em. 😂😂😭😭😭😭
“Ya know, you were a real good number two.”
“And you were a great number one, Hugo.”
I still remember the shock when, during season 6, I suddenly realised Ben had become my favourite character. But my god, he was so wonderful. And this scene always breaks me. He wasn't ready to move on, he still has redeeming to do. But he'll enter that church when he's ready.
Ben was easily the best character. I was the same after the 3rd season. A great actor!
Best TV Finale ever. Simply Perfect.
Let the idiots disagree..it was great!
OMG, you're an idiot
Totally agree. Best ending in TV history.
can u explain to me the story in a few words and the ending? i wanna start it but idk
It's pretty good, but it sure ain't better than the Twin Peaks Finale
watching again at the end of November 2022, and it's still just as impactful as the first time I watched the whole series. this will be probably the 15th time I've gone through it completely, and it is still a mystery. I wished it would have kept going and never ended....
Truly the greatest show of all time.
No series has impacted me so deeply! Thank you!
My thinking is Ben is hanging back to help Alex remember, and perhaps is seeking her forgiveness.
I just love it when John kicks that wheelchair aside like an old dish rag that will never get used again
That symbolism! So strong. I guess people(like me) want to repeat this show over and over because its such good poetry.
1:48 this scene played in my head as I walked for the first time after 25 weeks of crutches for double hip surgery
i really hope heaven is like this
We'll find out soon......God Bless
Not heaven, but the place we meet and then all go together.
@@roninroma Michael stayed on the Island as a whisperer ghost.
The way Locke says I forgive you sends chills.
God, I swear rewatching any scene from the last couple episodes of lost makes me ball my eyes out
Ben is seriously one of the best characters on any TV show ever.
That's my understanding of the Judgement anyway... it's not going to be a big scary throned old man sending everyone to the lava pits, it's going to be a kindly Father who can officially tell you your mistakes and bad choices have been forgiven and you can come home now.
God isn't an egotistical overLord because if He was none of us would exist.
This many years later and all the implications that these scenes speak to: still bring a tear.
Damn good show.
I wish I could go back and enjoy the show with my wonderful Son I miss giving him a hug 🤗 and we loved this show !
Has anyone pointed out 1:59 - "one dark, one light". Love the symbolism the director put here.
Show is just genius.
Is there a bad Ben and Locke scene, I cannot think of any off the top of my head, these two just work so great with each other.
Bad as in it sucked or as they were fighting
@@nicempie3178 Bad as in sucked. I don’t think there are any
The interaction between Ben and Locke is what makes 3x20, The Main Behind The Curtain, one of my favorite series episodes.
My all time favorite TV show. ❤
This scene isn’t on prime?! Thank god I’m obsessed enough with the show to have found this clip!!
They cut a few scenes out for some reason. God bless RUclips
Its a key part of the closing those characters and hints what happened to them.
i really adore Ben, he's the best character, and with an amazing end.
The way Ben's face just absolutely lights up the moment he sees Hurley brings such a smile to my face.
John forgiving him allowed him to walk again.
Probably that was the meaning of "let go"
Two of the best actors of the show. Every scene with them is truly brilliant.
And plus ben tries to protect him in the Flash sideways
Literally the hello hugo makes me Happy/sad cry everytime

I kind of get the feeling that outside the church represents a purgatory of sorts. Ben remains there while he works out his baggage.
They were all in a kind of purgatory
Not all of them should go to heaven. I mean Said was a cold blood killer and John killed a lot of people. He threw a knife into a woman back and she was only trying to help them. Some of the should go to hell.
abby Sand They all made mistakes but atoned for them. That's the point, finding a new meaning and being enlightened.
Alanmarine1
I do not recall them atoning for anything.
Charity Diary
I agree with some of thing you mentioned but I like to interject one thing Ben change began when he starting working with Hurley at the end of season 6.
The Moment that John Locke gets up out of His Wheelchair 🦽 is Such a Beautiful Moment ❤😊
The unseen spinoff of Hugo/Ben/Walt on the island afterwards. We'll always wonder but never see it. As we shouldn't.
And baby Aaron
Ben and Locke are amazing characters. Best in TV.
Bens face lighting up when he sees Hurley and says “Hello Hugo!” is god tier acting, you can see just how much love and respect Ben had for Hurley in those few seconds, they must have had an amazing time together and grown so close when they were running things on the island
This has become one of my go to feel good videos for when I'm sad. I love it so much!
The joy Ben shows when he sees Hugo always gets me.
When, years later, I met a former schoolmate who was always very unfriendly to me and apologized to me. I remembered John's words and said "if it helps you, I forgive you"
Ive always loved Ben. lol Everything about him is fragile. He beats himself up. Everything he says. This scene really got me crying.
KRiSTi ! best ben scene :)
I always hated Ben, he was indeed selfish and jealous of someone because of the little he had. He was a very good character, but not one I'd love, except when he repents at the end. Even there, he does not dare to talk first to Locke.
@@En_theo I hated him, but only for a season or two
My god the goosegumps watching tghis scene, Lost is truly amazing
I like the symbolism of how Ben and John part here. John, having let go of the past completely, is walking confidently. Ben, who still "has some things to work out," is the one sitting, lower.
That smile at 1:13
I don’t know if I can watch it just because of the music. I’m already getting emotionally!
greatest lost scene... crying right now
John's smile is so good and honest, kind of like saying "It's okay, don't you worry, we'll figure it out and it'll be alright. ^^"
8 years on since the end of Lost, I still think it was the best damn show on TV ever!!!!!
100%
As Charlie would say~spOt oN!
I miss this show so much! I watched it with my son! I haven’t seen him much for the last 4 5 months with this pandemic and I miss him! 😢😷
This series will always have a special place on my heart.
Also, it changed the way i look at islands of ohau now.
Locke is not a special guy, he is GODLIKE
I wonder how long Hurley and Ben looked after the island. Could have been centuries.
If it helps, Ben, you totally are special and we adore you :)
Eight years later and this scene still touches me. I'm really indentified with Ben.
Working with Hurley I bet Ben never touched a gun again.
Having such a huge crush on Ben, this scene made me so unbelievably happy. Ben will get his good ending. He just needs time. And, oh my God, John forgiving Ben is too amazing...this is so, so perfect. Darn it. Now I'm sobbing.
Never fails to bring me to tears.
I like to believe that Ben passed on to the other side with Roussau and Alex when he was ready.
This was my salvation after my Juanita passed away. I watched it as it provided me clues to where I need to go. Thank you. It does help.
Aw, bless you my friend. I hope you managed to find some semblance of respite watching this series. It really marked my heart.
Looked for this scene for so long, absolutely amazing.
Watching this makes me sad, I have been depressed my whole life and this show was an important part of my life and it sucks not looking forward to a new episode every week. and Watching it just makes me feel sad and think about things I lost in my life. Specially Kate and Jack, reminds me of this girl I lost.
You need to find another series then.
brilliant series, beautifully heart wrenching ending
a beautiful and powerful scene, I think it must be in the top 5 of the best lost scenes even in the history of tv shows, I feel identified with that scene because this year I forgave to a person who hurt me many years ago.
Ben and Locke had they best chemistry
