Damn. Ben Linus is that one character you never expected to love as much as you did. He started out a really hatable guy I loved to see him get beaten up, but he ended up having some of the best character development of anyone and one of my all time favorite characters.
Yes me too! His story was quite amazing...and if we go back and watch the show from the beginning, and consider what Ben was really trying to do, and was being "forced" to do by Jacob (keeping the candidates on the island, etc), we have more sympathy for what this poor man had to suffer through in order to fulfill his goals.
Love him? Dude was a quibbling, man-baby who lied and manipulated and murdered for his own selfish reasons. He then tried to kill an innocent woman just for petty revenge.
Michael Emerson put on a master performance with Ben he played the character to perfection, its crazy to think that a whole story arc for Ben was dropped
I searched and looked and I found no lies with your statement. Side note: what are we doing here watching this scene in 2020, we are some different people.
“Because he’s the only one that will have me” (basically saying the DEVIL is the only one who will have him and he knew it) He felt that isolated and wrong within himself
Just remember this is the character that hooked us with: "You guys got any milk....?" From that to this powerful, moving scene. It's such an incredible character arc they gave him. Fantastic character!
i feel like Ben is the one character that you can't help but love. I know he's evil at the beginning and all, but all he ever wanted was to feel needed. He's a sad man who had one thing in his life and he got her killed for a man he never even met.
I agree wholeheartedly. Ben is one of my favorite character of all time. He starts off so horrible, but redeems himself and ends up being so great. And he's one of the most complex characters on the show too. It's true what they say: "All the best cowboys have daddy issues." Ben is defined by the relationship between father and child. His biological father, Roger, was a bastard. Ben, as a child, did everything he could to please his father, but Roger never cared for him at best, and was hateful and abusive at worst. Eventually, Ben got fed up, found a new family in the Others, and killed Roger. Next, Ben lived with the Others and worked for Widmore, who was his next father figure. (sorta. this one was kinda weak.) But even though Ben did what he was told, and what he thought was right, Widmore was a commanding, heartless bastard. Eventually Ben got fed up with him too, so he deposed and banished Widmore. Finally, Ben was in charge, and he was only accountable to Jacob. Ben led the Others both in a way to ensure his own power, but also to increase the Others' power as a whole. He was trying to get Jacob's attention and show him he was doing a good job for his people. Once again, he was trying to show his worth to and please his father, this time Jacob. And as Ben said, "He didn't even care." When Ben finally met and confronted Jacob, he asked him, "What about me?" and Jacob responded, "What ABOUT you?" Jacob was just as negligent as Roger was. So Ben did was he does best: he killed his father. This father/child relationship also expressed it self in him from the other side: In his relationship with his own daughter, Alex, and in the relationship with his people, to whom he was supposed to play leader and father figure. In both relationships, how did he act? Controlling, cold, distant, abusive. To him, this was how fathers acted, and so this was how he behaved. So yeah, Ben had daddy issues. Maybe he was written by Steven Spielberg.
Ben was never EVIL at the beginning...he had an agenda and MO of his own...he was not EVIL though. He was doing what he needed to do to survive, is that any different than what Locke or Jack or Sawyer or Kate had been doing all along? How about Sayid and such? They all did things to survive and make their lives okay...Ben was doing the same thing. But because we, as an audience, were led to hate him because we were coerced into believing the "Others" were evil creatures, we automatically hated BEN too!
Never LOVED Ben. I appreciated how complex and nuanced his character was. Never "loved" him. He was a murdering, manipulative, exploitative, possessive, emotionally, psychologically and physically abusive person. He let his own daughter die (saying she meant nothing to him). He killed John Locke (out of pure envy over his specialness and jealousy that John was replacing him as leader). He did that weird obsessive thing with Juliet. He was running to join FLocke even though he saw FLocke kill everyone in the Temple, Bram's entire team, and who knows how many others. He brutalized Sawyer and Kate just so he could manipulate Jack into performing surgery to save his life. He emotionally manipulated Jack for the same reason. He messed with John about the button in the hatch NOT doing anything because he lied and said he never entered the numbers or pushed the button. THIS caused John to prevent Eko from pushing the button which caused the Island to get discovered by Widmore's freighter people which caused the Kahana to be blown up (thanks to Ben killing Keamy even though he knew that Keamy had the dead man's trigger for the bomb on the Kahana). Ben was the reason Keamy's assault team slaughtered all those people hiding at Dharmaville (and earlier Carl, Rousseau and Alex). Ben is the ultimate PoS!
@@victorpradha9946 All of that is explained though. Part of it was because of the abuse and blame his father did to him. Another part was that The Others, and most likely Widmore and Richard taught him how to manipulate people after he was "cleansed" by the Temple Water, Richard even said that once he is saved from dying by the water, he would never be the same person and would forget most of what happened to him regarding Sawyer and Co. Lastly is the desperation of preventing another woman to die at childbirth just like his mother did when he was born. While I dont think it is entirely personal, I think that pushed him over the edge of doing evil things to people. Deep down he was never truly evil, otherwise he would have never tried to atonne for his deeds, and ofc that will take him quite a while which is why he decided not to move on at the end.
Michael Emerson in Lost is one of THE best things that has happened in television ever. Such an amazing actor. Such an amazing character. I've watched this show so many times now and it still blows me away how good he is.
the music, tone, acting, context, and pacing of this scene make it - in my opinion - easily the most poignant moment of the series. Hearing one of the most diabolical characters of the series say “I know what you are feeling” and “But the thing that really mattered...was already gone” is so impactful and cathartic that it makes me cry. whenever I or someone else in my life has a redemptive realization or moment of metanoia, I hear this music in my head and think of this scene. This series truly was amazing.
yeah I rewatched the episode last night and started crying in this scene, i love everything about it. micheal emerson is a great actor, the final episode of person of interest had me crying as well
You know I never really appreciated this scene OR even bens character as a whole until I kept rewatching lost. But my god. Ben is probably the best character on lost. The acting. The little eye looks. The twitches. With the music. Ridiculous.
Tonberry Mass murder? Ben did kill people but if you’re referring to the purge, there is ample evidence throughout the series that Ben was not the leader at the time of the purge. It’s not precise but I do believe that Charles Whitmore was the leader when the purge happened.
Ben is an mass murderer?? That's not true. He killed his father, Kemy, John, Jacob, Widmore... I think, that's all. And i can really understand, that he killed his father, Kemy, Widmore and Jacob.
Lisa Kellerman it seems so funny to say that’s all he killed, but I agree with you. So many podcasts and comments give Ben the credit for the purge. Although Ben himself has said he was and wasn’t responsible I tend to think Charles Whitmore was the leader at that time. And Richard was certainly as responsible as “the leader”
@@robinmendelson5512 Thank you. Yes, that's the point. Peoples think, that Ben was responsible for the purge. But that isn't so. Yes, Widmore and Richard. That's a good idea. Thank you for agree with me! Ben isn't a mass murder.
@@lisakellerman7701 In a way Ben was responsible for the purge of the Dharma Intiative. Even though it wasn't his idea and he did it to join the others, it was him, who finally killed them all. You could tell me for hours that he was ordered to do that, but finally it was his choice not to tell anybody about the incoming poison attack. He betrayed them to join the others.
I've been studying a little music theory the past few months...I finally realized why the music in this scene is so powerful. This quiet version of Ben's theme (Dharmicide) is in G major. In the first instance (the purge) the song plays until just before it should resolve to a g major chord (going home to the tonic). Instead, it leaves the piece unresolved, instead cutting to a sinister variation of the theme when Ben tells Richard to leave his father's body out in the van. 3 SEASONS LATER.... at Ben's most emotional moment of redemption...when being told that he's accepted, that he can belong.... it FINALLY RESOLVES to the G chord!!! Giacchino..... what a genius.... EDIT: This version, that appears in Dr. Linus is actually transposed up a half-step to Ab major
I agree there’s much to be admired about giacchino but this is a poor reason to do so. Withholding the tonic is a very basic and common composing tool, effective but quite unremarkable.
I just re-watched...This scene always gets me. What an amazing actor Michael is. I can say that I had the pleasure of meeting him. I had a chance to chat with him. What polite and cool guy. I was honored to shake his hand. This scene just makes me respect him more.
Ben's character dev. was phenomenal, going from a heartbroken little boy who was resented & verbally abused by his alcoholic father, to the leader of a group who was responsible for keeping the Island & the world safe. Ben was such a dedicated leader, he sacrificed his own daughter's life to make sure the Island stayed out of the hands of Charles Widmore. Ben was manipulative & egotistical but he was also a good father with a kind heart & in The End, he became the man he was always meant to be.
Killing Locke was so fucked though, I just cant believe Locke would let him do that to him-by that I mean deceive him to the point of letting his guard down that much, but cant say it wasn't amazing television. Ben is indeed a top 10 all time TV villain no doubt. and his Redemption in the end was solid as well, especially considering the script bit the nail in season 6 especially at the end, but Ben was amazing character.
Huh what an interesting take actually, you present a view of him that'd literally be like how his side saw him as, not as an evil vilian but a genuine dedicated leader, with faults yes but not evil,, maybe your right maybe he was more so evil just from the Island Survivors perspective, that being said he absolutely did some selfish borderline evil things, I mean aside from Killing Locke who by that time was probably his Quasai best friend even, I just cant get over that scene man I didn't see it coming at all I mean to talk someone out of suicide in a moment of huge despair, only to then to choke him Locke of all people out from behind especially a man like Locke who went through so much, his last words being "I don't understand" is so tragic like wait How the hell I cant die here after everything that happened on the Island, Ben is truly wicked for crossing that line, but that being said from the Others/Island protectors perspective he was mostly a good guy and a genuine good leader/defender of the Island I guess for sure, amazing character regardless.
incredible scene. the emotion between the two actors is touching. emerson is a great character, once again. but ilana is fast becoming one of my favourites . shes such a noble and beautiful woman. im glad shes in the show.
this show was so underrated. Ive seen it 4 times through and it is historic TV. Absolute perfect acting in this show. My forever favorite and this scene gives me chills. I remember seeing it for the first time and i teared up at his performance. Best actor on the show IMO next to Josh Holloway.
Everytime he says because he's the only one that'll have me, my heart breaks a little more. Michael Emerson is incredible. If he doesn't at least get nominated for an emmy this year I will personally go to the people who are in charge of the nominations and bitch slap everyone of them.
Absolutely, without a doubt, the best scene of the whole of season 6 thus far. Utterly wonderful, pulls right on the heartstrings, and if Michael Emerson doesn't get an award for his work this season I will be incredibly surprised.
I have to be honest, when I watched this the night it aired I cried...Great acting by both Michael Emerson and the actress who plays Illana. Also, Michael Giacchino's great music makes it all the more emotional.
One of the few moments in Lost that affected me emotionally...I actually cried a little :( it shows how he's really not a bad guy, in fact he's much more human than he would ever have admitted had Alex lived.
Absolutely amazing scene. Emerson, for the second time (after the "I have to go say goodbye to my daughter" line from TSotTC) has had been in tears with just one line. You really feel for him, and he's clearly being genuine, quite a rare thing from Ben Linus. Kudos too to Zuleika Robinson. She's great in this scene. Just from her face you can see how she goes from anger to shame to understanding. Wonderful moment.
This was a very strong scene but then became pitifuly pointless when they killed off Ilana in the dumbest and most rushed way possible, not even mentioning they had already blown up another character before
this is probably Michael Emersons best performance on this show. But IIana didn't really do much for the series and because her death came so sudden it helped with the plot about what happens to you after the island is done with you.
@MadsBG - 100% agree! This is a very moving scene (music is wonderful as well of course) and the whole thing is very powerful and emotional. Michael Emerson should have got an acting award for his portrayal of Ben here. When I first saw this scene, I cried my eyes out. It's my favourite scene in the whole of all of 'Lost'. My favourite episode is in fact 'The Constant' - fantastic episode, again very moving at the end, as was the finale to the show where Jack finally meets up with his deceased father and the whole thing is beautifully resolved.
Does anyone find it funny how Ben tosses the shovel and runs? XD Definitly one of Lost's truly moving moments on the show and a major plot/character turn as well. I did not expect Ilana to forgive him. I actually thought Ben would join with Locke. The fact that he didnt is going to completely transform the story and Ben himself. I cant wait to see how this all goes down!
This is one of my absolute favorite scenes ever!!!! Michael Emerson is the absolute best actor on television, just give the guy another Emmy already. There will never be another character like Ben.
Ilana = someone who had a close relationship with Jacob, was like a daughter to him Ben = spent 35 years in service to Jacob and desperately sought a father figure from him after murdering his own to join The Others, however was never able to even meet him Its almost like a sibling thing between these two. Benjamin was the biblical son of Jacob and the most loved, which is ironically flipped on lost
Actually Joseph was the most loved son. That's why his brothers conspired to kill him(all of them except Benjamin)because of their jealousy. But they didn't go through with it and sold him to the Ishmaelites.
@@supremeworld87 Genesis 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
The most fascinating thing? The captor turns her back on a man with a loaded rifle in his hands at the end - and he doesn't shoot her. They finally won each other's trust.
Only just watched the whole series of Lost... amazed, emotion, confusion, everything....... but this scene was so emotional... a villain that was actually so emotional.. that he had thought behind everything he did... though some things he lied aboout.. but this scene, caused me so much tears over most of the really really emotional scenes, i cried at them all but this, i cried more than anything... he is truely an amazing actor, character in this tv series.
Amazing scene, makes me want to give Ben a big hug... He lost everything and stayed completely alone only with his feeling of guilt... Good that Ilana will have him :) BTW, Michael Emerson's acting is just brilliant. This is his another outstanding monologue, as good as this one he gave in the scene of Jacob's death. Love it!
This scene remains one of my favorites. Emerson was just amazing here. I had a chance to meet and chat with Michael, he was just a nice guy. Softest hands ever haha
this is the greatest portrayed scene in all of television history. I'm not usually one to say things like that but wow....Michael Emerson is brilliant. Gives me chills everytime i watch it.
iilana was like a short lived character that serves as an olive branch for Ben and its beautiful.Ben has done literally numerous atrocities & yet she will still be by his side..
I think she got written off suddenly just because they realised they overbudgeted on screentime. But I think she works to reinforce the idea that Jacob had no great plan and it's all up to them.
Never, in the history of television, have I seen a more sincere, honest apology. Ben (through Emerson) makes you feel how remarkably regretful he is for his actions - choosing the island over Alex, killing Locke and Jacob...
This right here was such a great scene...I honestly didn’t like the fact that they initially added random characters with minimal backstory but ilana grew on me. I really wish she could’ve seen her mission through.
This scene would have carried far more weight if liana had been Jacobs daughter as was originally planned. Ben saw Jacob as a father figure but he never returned the sentiment
10 minutes later… Ben: “Soooo, when you said you’d have me earlier, did you…” “I’m not sleeping with you Ben.” Ben: “Got it. Absolutely. Just had to be sure. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
I really hated Ben and I think he really deserved and needed that beating from Jack at the end of season 3. But the way the show showed him being broken down and then with this episode they gave him one of the best arcs ever.
I really love this scene but I can't get past how Illana reminds me a little of Ana Lucia. Maybe I'm wrong and it's just a coincidence that both actresses playing Ana and Illana kind of look similar... but is there a possibility that Illana might be Ana Lucia's sister?
The character development on this show man...wow. He was just an evil ass at first and then with this and how the show ended is amazing. I came to like him. Jin was the same. Just thought he was a prick and then you see why he was and how he grew.
I know this is a serious scene and all, but I can't help but laugh at how Ben throws the shovel up before he starts running.
ikr lmfao so funny
ADIOS!!
Why did you do this? No I can't unsee it!
Amir Elkassed I love how Ilana threw her mango too before chasing him!
So funny. Michael Emerson is so great

Everytime he says because he's the only one that'll have me, my heart breaks a little more. Michael Emerson is incredible. If he doesn't at least get nominated for an emmy this year I will personally go to the people who are in charge of the nominations and bitch slap everyone of them.
One of these days, I’m gonna watch Lost all over again all the way through from the top.
Masterful performance by Michael Emerson. Just fucking amazing acting.
I love how Ben starts as this terrifying psychopath, but by the end he's just everyone's favorite cinnamon roll.
Haha true
Nah he was a scumbag POS and a murderer. Liking him makes you a terrible person
Absolutely, without a doubt, the best scene of the whole of season 6 thus far. Utterly wonderful, pulls right on the heartstrings, and if Michael Emerson doesn't get an award for his work this season I will be incredibly surprised.
That was heartbreaking…the main cast of Lost did some great acting.
I have to be honest, when I watched this the night it aired I cried...Great acting by both Michael Emerson and the actress who plays Illana. Also, Michael Giacchino's great music makes it all the more emotional.
Emerson is such a great actor! It's probably the best scene in Lost ever!
The acting though! Man Mr emmeron can act
*Michael Emerson
Great sce- Whoa, dejá vu!
I think this is actually one of those rare "Honest Ben" moments. Amazing stuff.
This really makes me want to be an actor. He's amazing! I'm not crying
One of the few moments in Lost that affected me emotionally...I actually cried a little :( it shows how he's really not a bad guy, in fact he's much more human than he would ever have admitted had Alex lived.
Nah he was a scumbag POS and a murderer. Liking him makes you a terrible person
Her death was pathetic. There really was no reason for it. And I actually liked her character. Plus, she had a nice ass.
Blowing up sayid was fucked up. At least Charlie and Michael got blown up with a back story. Sayid straight up bye bye
2:20 The way he can't look her in the eyes when he admits where he'll go. So powerful, damn...

@@FreshZCORD Yeah right there, just wanted the context a little before that
can't believe a scene like this isn't worth an Emmy.
Despite how rocky season 6 was, Emerson still knocked it out of the park.
season 6 was great
Does anyone find it funny how Ben tosses the shovel and runs? XD
Definitly one of Lost's truly moving moments on the show and a major plot/character turn as well. I did not expect Ilana to forgive him. I actually thought Ben would join with Locke. The fact that he didnt is going to completely transform the story and Ben himself. I cant wait to see how this all goes down!
Ughhh that scene is just so effing amazing!!!
So touching, so moving,so everything. I was bawling!!!
That was a Heart Wrenching moment.... chokes me up Every time
Such an amazing scene. When she said "I'll have you," oh it was beautiful. You don't often get a character at once so hardcore but also so kind.
WOW , powerful , just beautiful
This is one of my absolute favorite scenes ever!!!! Michael Emerson is the absolute best actor on television, just give the guy another Emmy already. There will never be another character like Ben.
Ilana = someone who had a close relationship with Jacob, was like a daughter to him
Ben = spent 35 years in service to Jacob and desperately sought a father figure from him after murdering his own to join The Others, however was never able to even meet him
Its almost like a sibling thing between these two. Benjamin was the biblical son of Jacob and the most loved, which is ironically flipped on lost
Oh my gosh. That is true.
Actually Joseph was the most loved son. That's why his brothers conspired to kill him(all of them except Benjamin)because of their jealousy. But they didn't go through with it and sold him to the Ishmaelites.
@@amunra4015 no benjamin was.
They finally won each other's trust.
i cry
every
time
ILiana was heartwarming and loving, Ben was cute folloing after her like a lost/guilty child cought on the act
Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn are pretty much the best actors on the show.
“Because he’s the only one who will have me…,”
when i watched this seen i was actually crying.
UNBELIEVABLE acting on Michael's part.
2021 anyone?
Yep
Only just watched the whole series of Lost... amazed, emotion, confusion, everything....... but this scene was so emotional... a villain that was actually so emotional.. that he had thought behind everything he did... though some things he lied aboout.. but this scene, caused me so much tears over most of the really really emotional scenes, i cried at them all but this, i cried more than anything... he is truely an amazing actor, character in this tv series.
Linus: Because he's the only one that'll have me
Michael Emerson is such a great actor.
omg I love ben so much. his acting was amazing in this scene. I always cry!!!
Amazing scene, makes me want to give Ben a big hug... He lost everything and stayed completely alone only with his feeling of guilt... Good that Ilana will have him :)
BTW, Michael Emerson's acting is just brilliant. This is his another outstanding monologue, as good as this one he gave in the scene of Jacob's death. Love it!
Ben receiving something he'd never had or given: Forgiveness.
I think Michael Emerson just won another Emmy with this scene
This scene remains one of my favorites. Emerson was just amazing here. I had a chance to meet and chat with Michael, he was just a nice guy. Softest hands ever haha
this is the greatest portrayed scene in all of television history. I'm not usually one to say things like that but wow....Michael Emerson is brilliant. Gives me chills everytime i watch it.
This scene is SO amazing! I love Ben so much even though he is such an evil and yet so sweet and lovable character!! WHY IS HE SO CUTE??!!
iilana was like a short lived character that serves as an olive branch for Ben and its beautiful.Ben has done literally numerous atrocities & yet she will still be by his side..
Great freaking amazing acting of Michael Emerson. He is a God!
Brilliant scene, brilliant acting. Best show of all time.
One of the best scenes of LOST ever seen !
Great Michael Emerson! I like very much Ben's charachter!
Such a beautiful scene. Perhaps my favourite throughout all of the show itself.
There are so many scenes in Lost that make my heart sink.
Best show ever made
This is my one act audition piece I hope I do okay
I teared up, when he said
"But the thing that really mattered was already gone."
There is a bit of Ben in all of us...that's why qe like him
I never fail to cry at thiss!
Amazing scene. After this scene, he's my 2nd favorite character.
Why does this scene make me cry so hard....😭
2:44 That’s what she said
This right here was such a great scene...I honestly didn’t like the fact that they initially added random characters with minimal backstory but ilana grew on me. I really wish she could’ve seen her mission through.
This scene would have carried far more weight if liana had been Jacobs daughter as was originally planned. Ben saw Jacob as a father figure but he never returned the sentiment
Those soundtracks, Perfect!
10 minutes later…
Ben: “Soooo, when you said you’d have me earlier, did you…”
“I’m not sleeping with you Ben.”
Ben: “Got it. Absolutely. Just had to be sure. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
lol
Super good acting
Ben was always my favourite character. I just wish they hadn’t revealed him to be ultimately as clueless as everyone else on the island.
Humanized him in my eyes, which i like. Brought him more down to earth, but that is just my take.
It was necessary for his redemption, he couldn't be the ultimate big bad
“I’ll have you.” 🖤
Mot beautiful repentance and redemption story I ever saw.
I love this scene so much.
Michael Emerson is an great actor!
I'll have you.... Excellent acting from Zuleikha Robinson and Michael Emerson...
Such a nice scene. Ben finally found a friend. Too bad she died next episode.
Michael, you are amazing!
The character development on this show man...wow. He was just an evil ass at first and then with this and how the show ended is amazing. I came to like him. Jin was the same. Just thought he was a prick and then you see why he was and how he grew.
When ben says 'And he didnt even care' i thought he was on helium! XD
Still, a very moving performance by Micheal E. Bravo!
Oh ive been set free? Let me start running once my captor is looking!
How talented he has!! Michael ^^
I was so amazed by her forgiving him.
