I like this scene a lot because at first, he had the choice to save his daughter or himself and he chose himself. The flash sideways Ben chose Alex over what he wanted. Perfect redemption. Also, I hate how they tricked you. When he walked into the office, I was like oh no oh no oh no, I thought he became the principal
I don't think helping Alex in made up world could be described as "perfect redemption" considering what he has done in REAL world. It's like saying "you helped me in this video game so I frogive you killing my mother (and like 100 other people) we gucci now." "Perfect redemption" :D:D:D:D:D:D:D
To be fair, the stakes weren’t quite as high, lol. There are thousands of schools he could be principal at. Only one island that sustains life as we know it.
@@opheliagott5382 He was willing to risk her life just to stay on the island. Here he abandons his aspirations just to not risk Alex's chances for education.
This was why Dr. Linus was my favorite episode. It show how Ben shed his selfish attitude that cost him his daugther Alex life and he realizes there is much important things than yourself.
I think it was to do with the idea that the first time he tried to call the guy's bluff the principal went through with it without a second thought and shot Alex. It's more the point that he wasn't willing to risk Alex(or her future) again for his own ambitions. Ergo he learned from his mistakes.
I think it's both, actually. Clearly, Ben's greatest regret, and what he sees as his greatest sin, is causing Alex's death through his own words and actions, the chain of which started long before Keamy got to the Island. But I believe the show demonstrates to us, through his backstory and arc through the show, that one of Ben's fatal flaws is his destructive ambition slash desire for power and control. The massacre of the Dharma Initiative, his betrayal of Widmore, his actions toward Juliet, all of his manipulation of the Losties, all to obtain and hold onto power or what he sees as his. That's why he's so distressed when he takes on the task of moving the Island because he knows that means leaving forever. However, his choice to do that is fueled by his other fatal flaw: envy. Ben envies Locke for appearing to be genuinely special and chosen, so he makes it his special mission to destroy John. I believe that's also why he slides in and takes the job of moving the Island for himself. Which, now that I think about it, must have chapped the Man in Black due to Locke being a candidate that he could have gotten off the Island with a clever bit of deception.
This is the person Ben always wanted to be. It's about feeling chosen and special in the eyes of just one person. I think this afterlife was very fitting for him, and really showed the man he wanted to be without all the B.S. of Jacob, the island, the Dharma Initiative, and the rest. At his core, he just wanted to be someone that could be looked up to, even if it was just one person that meant something to him, too.
He had too many sins for that I guess, he said hymself he had things to do, but after years I really apreciate the ending of the show because the explanation for everything is on small details.
@@defender2222 Why with Daniel and Charlotte? Ben has nothing to do with them. Daniel belongs to Charlotte, and Widmore and Eloise. Ben could go in the church with Alex, Danielle and Richard. But i like your idea, why he waited, to let Alex grew up. Besides all, i wish, that the writers let Ben go in the church with our "Losties". I mean, he become good friend with Hugo, when they protect the island. John also forgives Ben. I think, Kate and Sawyer had at least also no problems with Ben. They saved his life, when the tree fell on him in the last episode of " Lost". I think, Sun would also make peace with Ben. I'm sure about Desmond. I was so sad, when they let Ben outside the church.
Ben is definitely waiting for Alex, and of course Danielle. It wouldn't shock me if he moved on with Widmore though. Those two were bitter rivals for so long, I'd like to think they buried the hatchet and all moved on together.
@JarJam195 Yes this is the same Ben. This Ben is dead, and this situation is a projection that he is going through because when he died he wasn't over what happened when the commando guy killed Alex. This was his way at making peace with what happened to Alex on the island.
"I want to explain... I want to explain that I know what you're feeling. I watched my daughter Alex die in front of me. And it was my fault. I had a chance to save her. But I chose the island. Over her. All in the name of Jacob. I sacraficed everything for him... and he didn't even CARE. Yeah, I stabbed him I was soooo angry, confused, terrified that I was about to lose the only thing that ever mattered to me, my power... but the thing that really mattered... was ALREADY GONE." This was Ben's great confession from a different part of the same episode. Combining the confession with this redemption scene is simply gives a deep relief for the audiance, all of us, who watched Ben killing, cheating, tricking, manipulating and eventually sacraficing her own daughter...and in the afterlife he FINALLY managed to find the right decision and hence become a better person. 10/10.
Well written. Honestly, at the time when Ben was the manipulating killer, he still fascinated me in some ways and I hoped all the time that he would show some regret sooner or later---so the final season really, really made me happy! :-)
I actually like flash-forwards Ben. He's a nice guy and I don't know what he said to Reynolds, but at least Ben showed he cared about his daughter in this scene, even though she didn't know that she was his daughter on the island. The show should have showed her remembering that Ben was her father. The only places I see that is in fanfiction. I have seen three stories when that happens and Alex forgives her father.
Perfect writing? He killed houndreds of people and then in made up world he helps Alex and that makes him a good guy apparently according to the show. Perfect writing my ass.
This episode i downloaded was currupted and video player stop it in mid of the episode.i never think i got left part is on youtube. Thanks for upload this.
notice the black and white pattern of this guy. black chair - white shirt- black stripes - black tie with white dots. LOST is all about the black and white from the bigging of the series.
Me encanta cómo hace parecer que eligió el poder sobre Alex al principio pero después, guau, "salva" a Alex en contraposición a lo que hizo en la isla. ¡Amé más a Ben Linus en este capítulo!
I don't understand why everyone says, that Alex' death was Ben's fault. Do you really think, Keemy wouldn't have killed her, if Ben had left the house in this scene? I do not think so! I don't understand why everyone says that it was Ben's fault for Alex Tot. Do you really think Keemy wouldn't have killed her if Ben had left the house in the scene? I do not think so! Ben didn't think, Keemy was killing Alex. Because he and Widmore must have invented a rule like "family members are not killed". Why else did Ben said: ,,He changed the rules!", after Alex's death. It is understandable that he blames himself for Alex' death. Any parent would certainly do that. Although no one can know for sure, that Keemy has killed Alex not. I'm sure, he had killed her anyway.
I do think that Keamy would have killed Alex either way, but Ben will never know for sure what would have happened had he left the house. Also, he knows that the last thing Alex heard her father say was that she meant nothing to him. Lie or not.
It WAS his fault. He was willing to risk it rules or no rules. When someone points a gun at your kids head you just don't go "yeah kill her I don't care" unless you are psychopath. Nice mental gymnastics though. 3,7/10.
In another scene where Ben confronted Charles, Charles denied changing the rules. Keamy was told to torch the whole island, extracting Ben was part of the no killing each other rule. But hearing Ben disavowing her like that, he either thought he was free to kill her, or just got enraged with the whole debacle. If Ben really thought she was dead anyway, he would've told her how much she means to him. As for Keamy, what we saw of him, he didn't kill for fun, he killed to accomplish his mission, even if a little bit. When Kate ran out of jungle, he could've just popped her, but he didn't.
I love the petty smile on Reynolds when Ben makes the move to get the club back. He misunderstands the value of the play, thinking Ben wagered a Royal Flush for the prize of a student recommendation and getting out of detention, when Ben really won his soul back.
Ben was seriously abused from his father as a child. And after Sayid shot him he was taken to the temple where mib presumably further corupted him. I don't find it suprising he turned into a power hungry sociopath. The flash-forward scenes show what kind of a man he would be in a different environment
Why didn’t he just reveal the principals dirty secret after he wrote the letter of recommendation to Yale? he couldn’t just change it so drastically, and Linus could easily then argue that he used the negative email as a threat
Well even on the island whenever he made a deal he made it happen and always held up his end of the bargain. He’s a commendable villain, he never screwed over anyone after he made a deal
So the principal, even though he is a piece of shit and doesn't deserve to be principal at all, gets to keep his job. This is proof that evil people will always succeed in the world.
its crazy to remember that Alex played as Suzzy Crabgrass on Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide AND currently plays the role of Rosita of The Walking Dead.

kind of, he was trying to trick keamy to thinking he didn't care about alex so he wouldn't kill her. Ben miscalculated the situation.
