I saw Fates warning in Oakland, Ca. a long long time ago. No Exit tour It was an awesome show. They played with Sanctuary it's when refuge denied was new. brings back a lot of memories.
This was on HEAVY rotation in my tape deck all through high school. As a vocalist and guitarist, I bow down to how insanely technical and skilled this musicianship is. Another classic from this era is Flotsam and Jetsam-No Place For Disgrace. The guitarists rip, and like Ray Alder, Eric AK can peel the fucking paint off the wall with his high notes. OLD SCHOOL METAL FOREVER... CHEERS
I was fortunate enough to see them for the Perfect Symmetry tour where they did a great deal of the old material including work from this magnificent album. Ray Alder is a big part of how I sing and The ivory gates of dreams is lyrically inspirational and musically outstanding. this is a watershed album. For Alder, this album and Perfect Symmetry are golden. I sort of got lost afterward to be honest.
Zimmerman was my fave drummer for that era they were pioneers for the prog/metal movement i never missed a show that's cool ya did a show with them good luck with your new project
This guy is one of the rare singers in 80's metal that could actually sing....fuckin incredible voice. Nice ass riffs too...heavy. I must have drawn the album cover to No Exit like 20 times during junior high. Easy picture for an amateur artist like me to doodle.
we played with this band back in the day and they were awesome...queensryche era-ish. hey all daniel gomez (vocalist)here from the band gothic slam..thanks for remembering the band. check out my new project....keep skankin.
Frank Aresti's guitar from this video just sold on eBay a couple weeks ago for $2001.00. It was still in immaculate shape, wish I had the money for it.
thanks for ur response and thanks for checkin out tha new project..I never stopped or went away..was always makin tha metal..... spread tha good word..DANIEL GOMEZ
My list of 80's Metal singers that had great voices and COULD sing (not just Metal but any Genre of music): Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Ray Adler (F.W.), Messiah Marcolin (Candlemass), David Wayne (Metal Church), King Diamond (Yes, King Diamond!), Jon Oliva (Savatage),
I think the comparison between Geoff Tate and Fates Warning involves the second vocalist. As for Dream Theater comparisons. After their first three albums, the band began to move from an Iron Maiden-like sound to a DT-like sound.
All Fates Warning is good Fates Warning, but the first albums with Arch are my Bible. It is everything that was good about METAL... Melody, Harmonies, a bit of fantasy and more talent than they could fit on an album. Masterpieces from the Metal Gods
Dream Theater and Fates Warning are very different from one another and always have been but no doubt Fates Warning have been earlier than DT the rest their musical ideas and all are very different and both bands are just phenomenal!
On "No Exit", Alder tried to emulate Arch a bit more than subsequent releases. Arch was more "Geoff Tate" if any comparisons are gonna be made. The great thing about Arch was that he didn't always hit notes spot-on, but sometimes was off-key, but in a way that sounded sinister and possessed by the Unholy One. Those first 3 FW albums are still the best, and No Exit is the only one of the others I've bothered to buy on CD and rip and synchronize. They started to become "Dream Theater, 2" .
Man to bad Ray lost his voice smoking up the cigars to include the Pooch!..He really messed up his singing career...damn what a loss!Probably why they decided not to continue in the mainstream and be more popular then DT....but it's a good thing Ray hasn't lost his dedication...God bless always guys your the best-no matter what!!
way back when this video first came out i could hear the awesomness and difference, it was melodic and rifftastic, drew me to it more than slayer or napalm death and crap like that. not to down em but fuck kerry king couldnt play a solo t save hell
One of my favourite bands. Do any of you have some better sounding videos of this band? I can sing just like this guy :-) I am looking in particular for "The Ivory Gate of Dreams".... Thx.
Ray Alder is great, but i much more prefer the early Fates Warning with the great John Arch.....Ray Alder is from my city, san antonio, tx....my friend used to party with him...he remembers back in the 80's when he landed the Fates gig...he said he was so stoked, he couldnt believe it.....lucky SOB
My list of 80's Metal singers that COULD NOT sing even if their fuckin lives depended on it: Ozzy Osbourne, James Hettfield (Metallica), Tom Araya (Slayer), Dave Mustain (Megadeth), Chuck Billy (Testament), Max Cavalera (Sepultura), Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Lemmy (Motorhead), Conrad "Cronon" Lant (Venom), Paul Baloff (Exodus), Joey Belladonna (Anthrax)...BTW...I wouldn't consider Twisted Sister Metal...more like Power Rock
this band seems to be pretty sparse... allthough im not too keen on the vocals the band just simple kick ass. whats the name of that guitarist on the right? hes fuckin sweet
fates warning was one of the most awesome original bands of the metal era

Man, that voice is so f***in incredible!!!!!
Any just remember FW haave been doing that DT esque sound since 1989 while DT only started doing that sound in 1992.
probably man ray alder had the range back then to be a power metal singer plus he can still nail those notes
What a voice!!!! Ray Alder is a heavy metal god
definitely one of the best prog bands ever.

sucks that ray don't sing the same anymore. saw them in july, awesome show.
Metal at it's absolute best. Period

@floatingcompassmedia
From Hot Girls and Morotcycles to Humanity, Society and Filosophy...
Heavy Metal can talk about everything, and never fails.
Dream Theater and Fates Warning are very different from one another and always have been but no doubt Fates Warning have been earlier than DT the rest their musical ideas and all are very different and both bands are just phenomenal!
its true....fates warning are one of the best bands ever
John Arc of Ray Alder...thats almost impossible for me to choose

America's answer to Bruce Dickinson
Damn, Ray used to have such an awesome voice :(
way back when this video first came out i could hear the awesomness and difference, it was melodic and rifftastic, drew me to it more than slayer or napalm death and crap like that. not to down em but fuck kerry king couldnt play a solo t save hell

One of my favourite bands. Do any of you have some better sounding videos of this band? I can sing just like this guy :-) I am looking in particular for "The Ivory Gate of Dreams".... Thx.
my friends father is the singer in this video. True story
The only best "Men In Black" you'll see is FW! And more FW!
Viva JOHN ARCH!!!
