This song is a masterpiece. Best prog metal song every written. Moving lyrics, perfectly fitting atmosphere, top-notch singing (I'd say Disconnected has Ray Alder's best vocal performance of any album he's made).
God, what an awesome song!! I also loved and always will enjoy the mood that Moore creates! Waiting as hell for the new O.S.I. and Fates Warning album...
Kevin Moore is a genius mike portnoy said if he didn't leave DT the band would have disbanded which sucks cause WDADU Images, Awake, are all great cds. They had a chemistry in that lineup which had a sound. That sound left with Kevin moore. DT still sounded like DT but when Rudess joined it lost that rough edge even more so when Iron Mike left last year.
Mark left FW right after finished the FWX recording sessions. He is now playing with his band SLAVIOR. Great band, you can find more info digging here in youtube. See ya!
FYI, Spock's Beard's singer/drummer is NOT "D'Virgo", but Nick D'Virgilio. I've been a fan of theirs for about 10 years now. What I wasn't aware of, however, was why Zonder left FW and what kind of music does Slavior play.
is that nick de vergilio on drums.. what ever, a good piece.. saw them support DT on the uk leg of the seasons tour just after kev left.. dont remember them as tight as this..good post..
If you are a fan of early DT (like images and words) then you should listen to Perfect Symmetry ("Part Of The Machine" and "Nothing left to say" are two songs from that album that you can find in youtube).
@chrismaxpayne I saw them on June 4 in Connecticut on the Parallels reunion tour, and they were as good as ever. Matheos doesn't shred like he used to, but that isn't necessarily the mark of a guitarist who lost his fire, simply one who is exploring a different style. Plus, Aresti was there, and he still shreds as well as ever.
Actaully I don't think Moore was the brain behind DT, cause they make complex music. I do think he was de SOUL, the emotions, the ambience of DT. Just take a look at OSI albums (Matheos and Moore).
You are right. Fates Warning was first, and I'm not sure why LaBrie did not join them other than that it just wasn't a fit for him. I'm glad he ended up with Dream Theater. It used to be Fates Warning with Dream Theater. Now it is the other way around. I'm trying to find more things I like about this band.
it's not about the amount of Drums! It's how you play them :) Ask Mike Portnoy he actually enjoys smaller kits and Dream Theater is like a fantastic band but so is Fates Warning they are the fathers of Progressive Metal if you don't believe me go ask Mike Portnoy himself. :) I love both bands! Cheers.
I need to listen to the whole album from FW. I have listened to some of the songs. But these songs would have to trump "Learning To Live", "Metropolis", "Take The Time" and "Surrounded" to make me think it was a better album...fat chance my friend. All the same, I respect FW and think they are a great Prog outfit that influenced DT in a wonderful way. I'm sure they respect each other very much. FW is a great escape from musical monotony.
I love early FW the best, thru Perfect Symmetry. This is good but it sounds like Rush gets abducted by aliens or something. Tool has taken over for me since the 90's. They continue to blow my mind with every album and every live show
I dont know why peoples are always saying who is the best keyboard player between Kevin Moore or Jordan Rudess. They are amazing and different, Kevin is better in composition like Wait For Sleep but Jordan has a better skill. Thats it
That's very true man I agree :) . Guitars is a personal thing but as for a Les Paul made by Gibsons they are over rated now. Gibson has really lowered it's quality control in one store you would find a good Gibson sounding like a beast and in another store the same model would sound horrendous... Ernie Ball Music Man's,Steinbergers,Conklin Guitars,Suhr Guitars,Andersons these are great companies that have really good peices and a phenomenal product :) Cheers.
Do yourself a favor go and listen to "Still Life", and then come to tell us how does Ray Alder Sing. By the way, Fates Warning invited James LaBrie to sing (Parallels 1991) much before DT had released any serious music (with the exception of YTSE Jam). FW was helping DT back then, they had already a name for themselves and DT was just starting. Both are good bands, but you have to keep in mind that the style of Images and Words was already present 3yr before in Perfect Symmetry, which I prefer.
Tbh I think that Kevin is better, simply because he doesn't overindulge in solos. If you listen to DT's first three, you'll hear that there are few solos which have pretty much nothing to do with the song as whole (as opposed to most later DT songs). That said, Rudess is a very good player, he just needs a bit more self-discipline. (as does DT as a whole these days) Which is why I have always loved later Fates Warning. No unnecessary solos :9
I respect your point but I do not share it. Also I think your comparison is unfair if it is based on this particular video. Either you choose to compare both singers at their best time or you choose to compare them at the present...
I'm a huge fan of FW - have been since the mid 80's. Also a DT fan, but I prefer FW. Why? Because FW's music has, in my opinion, much more emotion and feeling put into it. Sure, FW may not be as technically complicated as DT, but I feel they are the better band. Granted, DT has plenty of songs with emotion, and no doubt the guys in DT are all amazing musicians - but my vote goes to FW. Both of these bands are extremely underrated because their prog style doesn't fit into corporate radio.
I probably should say that it's about time that I say that I was joking. . gee the thumbs down I got, and I agree with you. I mean Neil Peart in the mid 70's had a little kit, and it grew with the diversity he needed and gained, same with Portnoy. Gee don't take it seriously, other viewers aha.
What's so funny is most all Prog Bands want James LaBrie to guest in their album, and he is happy to for the right price I imagine, because he has the following and the prestige of being one of the best Prog singers ever in the best band. He's a legend...I don't know a thing about Fates Warning singer. I bet Kev felt this was not near as fulfilling playing Dream Theater stuff. My honest opinion he won't show his face with DT is because he fucked up in 94 with leaving the band.
Behold the genius from DreamTheater playing hookie from the band with Fates Warning! Is Moore wearing corduroy?? No matter, everything Moore touches turns to platinum!
LaBrie pushed himself to hell and back with his voice and went way over the top. He may have done the same thing with this group too. This guy has a sweet voice, but nothing like what LaBrie was pushing at the Images and Words point. His live performances have gone down hill, but he still is a good singer. The only singer form this group that could compete with LaBrie is Arch.
I'm sure this guy here is a competent drummer, but really. There's no way he can fill Zonder's shoes. It's tough to play someone else's work, but I rate his creativity a 4 out of 10.
+jonesy97 Nick's a great drummer with a great musical sense and groove. He did a really good job imo, but it's really difficult to replicate Mark's parts, especially the subtleties.
come tha frick on, guys. why must Dream Theater always come into the picture where KevMo is concerned? as far as i can tell, he's been trying all this time to become completely disassociated from the band for this very reason.
Are you sure?, to me Fates Warning is superior to DT from a musical perspective. I would agree with you if you are meaning that DT's musicians are better playing their instruments from a technical point of view (with the exception of La Brie who is clearly a mediocre singer,as live performances show). However from when you listen to the balance, deepness and emotion in FW songs and the tendency to fireworks in DT, then you find FW to be superior. At least that is my Point of View.
WOW Really .... I am a true DT fan but love FW as well Petrucci is FAR from predictable ...... You reply to his playing style ...... is predictable however !! Oh well Agree to Disagree I guess
Same with guitars too, you dont need a $3000 guitar, I have a $750 schecter, sounds just as good as my friends les paul, kills my friend because he paid 6k for his les paul, lol
dt's not self indulgent nor is it shreddery! god, comon, just couse you prefer kevin, you dont need to bad mouth jordan!no better keybord player in my opinion--
amazing how good ray keeps his vocals together here while enjoying himself so much
the grand Kevin Moore, congratulations
the divine, kevin moore
what a monster line-up. kev is sweet!
This song is a masterpiece. Best prog metal song every written.
Moving lyrics, perfectly fitting atmosphere, top-notch singing (I'd say Disconnected has Ray Alder's best vocal performance of any album he's made).
it's a big pleasure seeing Kevin Moore on stage, amazing Fates Warning
I listened to this song for the first time and I instantly fell in love with it. One of the most powerful pieces of music I've heard.
this is Kevin for sure ...
i have the DVD and if you take a carefully look you recognize him
God, what an awesome song!!
I also loved and always will enjoy the mood that Moore creates!
Waiting as hell for the new O.S.I. and Fates Warning album...
This is like, flawless. I'd think this was a studio version if not for the video...
music is not simply an instrumental clinic. FW songs are full of emotions, thi is why may people loves them...
This is it, my all time favorite prog rock song, especially the latter half - pure feeling.
Amen, brother. First heard Anarchy Devine in 1987 and have been hooked ever since! I miss Zonder, though.
Love this. They are so good.
Kevin Moore is a genius mike portnoy said if he didn't leave DT the band would have disbanded which sucks cause WDADU Images, Awake, are all great cds. simply the best fates warning song.
Fing incredible!
Mark left FW right after finished the FWX recording sessions. He is now playing with his band SLAVIOR. Great band, you can find more info digging here in youtube. See ya!
wow, Kevin Moore looks so different now, compared to his Dream Theater days
learning to live is a masterpiece
Awesome sonority!
FYI, Spock's Beard's singer/drummer is NOT "D'Virgo", but Nick D'Virgilio.
I've been a fan of theirs for about 10 years now.
What I wasn't aware of, however, was why Zonder left FW and what kind of music does Slavior play.
He's cool too. I met him at an Armored Saint gig. Cool guy, and a great bass player
is that nick de vergilio on drums.. what ever, a good piece.. saw them support DT on the uk leg of the seasons tour just after kev left.. dont remember them as tight as this..good post..
Agreed!!!
If you are a fan of early DT (like images and words) then you should listen to Perfect Symmetry ("Part Of The Machine" and "Nothing left to say" are two songs from that album that you can find in youtube).
Indeed! =3
By "Still Life" I meant Fates Warning´s live CD from 1998 (the same year than Once In A LIVEtime, so you can get both CDs and compare)
There's something about FW's music that takes me to other places.
Thank God is not for everyone.
@chrismaxpayne
I saw them on June 4 in Connecticut on the Parallels reunion tour, and they were as good as ever. someone please upload pieces of me from this concert
You are right. Fates Warning was first, and I'm not sure why LaBrie did not join them other than that it just wasn't a fit for him. I'm glad he ended up with Dream Theater. It is Nick D'Virgilio! Awesome!

Every time I see a performance with Kevin Moore, he always looks either bored or pissed.
watching the video and not mentionning Nick di virgilio on drums !!
He's only Spock's Beard drummer/singer after all (who sayd Phil collins !?)
@marcelreno yeah
I love early FW the best, thru Perfect Symmetry. This is good but it sounds like Rush gets abducted by aliens or something. Tool has taken over for me since the 90's. They continue to blow my mind with every album and every live show
Great!
It's all good man LOL
Cheers!
Keep Proggin lol !
KEVIN MOORE ?!?!?!!? whatttttttttt
That is Derek Sherinian your talking about
Unlike me, I have never heard Kevin Moore play a bad keyboard part!
-Jordan Rudess
Is that Nick D'Virgilio on the drums? I'm just geting into this band so I'm kinda noob :P
I dont know why peoples are always saying who is the best keyboard player between Kevin Moore or Jordan Rudess. They are amazing and different, Kevin is better in composition like Wait For Sleep but Jordan has a better skill. Thats it
Where did he say that? Is there a video?
That's very true man I agree :) . Guitars is a personal thing but as for a Les Paul made by Gibsons they are over rated now. yep is MICK D"VIRGILIO in drumms
True yeah, it's always so subjective though. One likes one food where another one doesn't. I always liked Kevin's keyboard parts were best in DT.
@chrismaxpayne Words can't explain how little sense that made.
Do yourself a favor go and listen to "Still Life", and then come to tell us how does Ray Alder Sing. By the way, Fates Warning invited James LaBrie to sing (Parallels 1991) much before DT had released any serious music (with the exception of YTSE Jam). Both are good bands, but you have to keep in mind that the style of Images and Words was already present 3yr before in Perfect Symmetry, which I prefer.
That is Nick D'Virgilio on drums. Spock's Beard musta given him the night off.
Tbh I think that Kevin is better, simply because he doesn't overindulge in solos. If you listen to DT's first three, you'll hear that there are few solos which have pretty much nothing to do with the song as whole (as opposed to most later DT songs).

Which is why I have always loved later Fates Warning. No unnecessary solos :9
@andrewman12 oh my GOD man, you really have no idea....
I like both bands anyway.
i saw them yesterday and he is better with his hair short
glad ray grew his hair back ...
at the biginning who is singing
lol after seeing DT live vids and all that, you see other drum kits and think "wow, that's wimpy"
I respect your point but I do not share it. Also I think your comparison is unfair if it is based on this particular video. Either you choose to compare both singers at their best time or you choose to compare them at the present...
JOEY V !!! \m/
Is that Nick D'Virgilio on drums?
That drummer doesn't look like Mark Zonder!
Who is he? Why isn't Mark playing?
is Mark Zonder in drums??
why? he made the better dt keyboard solos, he´s still cool man
back to dream theater kevin
I miss mark zonder :( .. but great song / vid anyways!

why give up, this is what Jim does .....he makes music
KEVIN RULSS MAN
Man if this don't prove Kevin Moore was the brains behind DT then nothing will...
Some dude in the audience yells out at the intro "Metropolis"
I probably should say that it's about time that I say that I was joking. . gee the thumbs down I got, and I agree with you. I mean Neil Peart in the mid 70's had a little kit, and it grew with the diversity he needed and gained, same with Portnoy. Gee don't take it seriously, other viewers aha.

This is not Kevin Moore playing keys...
ever written*
Why does it have to be a competition anyways? I like lots of prog bands for different reasons.
I had pizza w/Ray
LaBrie pushed himself to hell and back with his voice and went way over the top. He may have done the same thing with this group too. "DAMN, that sounds like me!!!" What Kevin Moore exclaimed after listening to the song "Trouble" by Coldplay...
Learning to Live anyone?
I'm sure this guy here is a competent drummer, but really. There's no way he can fill Zonder's shoes. It's tough to play someone else's work, but I rate his creativity a 4 out of 10.

Nick is a fantastic drummer. Agree Mark Zonder is amazing. Dig them both.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_D%27Virgilio
exactly like old dream theater stuff....just kinda empty :S missin sumthin but dnot know what
@freminick123
don't feed the troll.
Who is that Mozart on keys????
@WeeMadArthur1
Funny, I only like DTs first albums ... no Moore, no glory ...
come tha frick on, guys. why must Dream Theater always come into the picture where KevMo is concerned? as far as i can tell, he's been trying all this time to become completely disassociated from the band for this very reason.
Kevin Moore and Nick D'Virgilio - fuckin' interesting) Still I do prefer OSI

Oh well
Agree to Disagree I guess
05:20...
i thought they going to play New Millenium by Dream Theater..wahahaha...the same bass lines...
Same with guitars too, you dont need a $3000 guitar, I have a $750 schecter, sounds just as good as my friends les paul, kills my friend because he paid 6k for his les paul, lol
bass player with ronaldo´s heair
freminick123 btw, beautiful has only one "l" and make sure never to commence a sentence with a conjunction... Grammar counts in large amounts!
Most overrated but awesome band EVER!!!
omg, what are you saying? Jordan Rudess are much much better than Kevin Moore! He can play that when he´s slepping..
dt's not self indulgent nor is it shreddery! god, comon, just couse you prefer kevin, you dont need to bad mouth jordan!no better keybord player in my opinion--
What's with all this Ray Alder versus James LaBrie nonsense?
John Arch is more talented than both, so there.
