  • Today we've got some licensed games that are...kind of unusual...seriously, how on earth anyone would ever think of making these games? So relax as we review James "Buster" Douglas Knock Out Boxing, Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball and Family Dog on SNES, Jerry Glanville's Pigskin Footbrawl, Cool World, and Minnesota Fats: Pool Legend. Enjoy!

    Now I know where the Simpsons got that reference when Homer and Ned become friends and they are playing pool: "They don't call me Springfield Fats just because I'm morbidly obese"

    You may have been joking about a licensed game based on your favorite toothpaste but here in the states we actually got one. Tooth Protectors on the 2600 which was licensed by Johnson & Johnson.

    I'm from Finland and I think I remember Family Dog from my childhood. It just seems really really familiar in some way altough I was five years old in 1993, so it probably aired at least a bit later, but I'm pretty sure it at least aired over here in the nineties.

      Easy one would have seen that portion in the Amazing Stories movies (I forget which one) and the very short lived Family Dog Television series that just couldn't overcome the Simpsons Juggernaut.

    Pigskin brawl is actually pretty historically accurate to some of the pre-football ball games that were popular in medieval Europe particularly in England and Ireland. The object of these games was to get a ball either of two post at the opposite sides of the town sometimes a mile or two apart and no other rules - stabbings also occurred during the game.

    Honestly, I actually think Minnesota Fats on the Genesis is one of my favorite pool games, especially as far as 2D ones go. The music is really good, too, although I wish the loops were a tad longer. It's kinda like the original Genesis Side Pocket, but better in many ways (not that it was bad at all). The Saturn version is far too cheesy to take seriously and enjoy as much as the Genesis version.

    the most bizarre licensed game i've ever heard of is probably omar sharif's contract bridge on the MS-DOS (which isn't really that odd when you find out that omar sharif was actually a contract bridge bigshot as well as world-famous actor but still)
    actually, scratch that, the weirdest licensed game i know of (even though i'm stretching the definition of licensed a bit here) is gorby's pipeline, which stars none other than then-president of the soviet union mikhail gorbachev. while compile didn't exactly sign a contract with mr. gorbachev, they did get the go-ahead from the soviet embassy before publishing the game to be sure they wouldn't inadvertently create a problem, so... not a licensed game, but an "approved" game? lol

      theflyingninja1 That would have been the original short, directed by Brad Bird (later of The Incredibles, Ratatouille and whatnot) and it was also shown as part of Steven Spielberg's Amazing Stories. The 90's TV series was an expansion on that and Bird wasn't involved. I've never seen the original short but I'm guessing based on who made it that it's pretty damn good.

    They made a game out of cool world? Huh. I actually have a bizarre nostalgia for that film, or rather what the film _could_ have been. It's always remained at the top of my list of films that I wish I could see as the director intended, but alas this isn't a case where a clever directors cut could save it because... well, it was changed before most of the film was made. The only parts that were produced of the original script were the backgrounds. If you had ever wondered why Cool World was this insane, creepy Gothic hellhole that looks like a Tim Burton feverdream it's because the film was originally conceived as a horror-comedy about a guy who fucks a toon and has a deformed child that decides he wants revenge on daddy for being born a freak. Seriously. It still sounds ludicrous and I don't think it would have made anything A-Grade, but... dammit, it sounds _fun as hell._

    Awesome vid as always! I'll admit that the Amiga Cool World does look to be rather enjoyable, if a bit simplistic. I'm betting the developers must've blown a lot of the budget and disk space onto that intro animation of whats-her-name dancing.
    Minnesota Fats' cutscenes are the fucking best. I also love how, in the outtakes vid, they managed to slip in some dude in the background saying "oh shit!" in one of them, it's incredible. I still gotta find the Japanese version (Side Pocket 2) and rip, convert and upload the cutscenes of that one.
    As for Combat Basketball, it's a similar situation to Buster Douglas, in that it's a port of some game but with a license slapped to it, in this case the Amiga/ST game Future Basketball, from Hewson, released a year earlier.

    SNES Cool World isn't THAT bad a game if you know what you're doing. It's more an arcade adventure than a platform we. Great entertaining and informative video. Those FMV scenes look like something else. Ya know, there was even a Cool World game for Gameboy. It was more a puzzle platformer with light combat elements, but man, they milked that turd before it even dropped out, ha ha. Great vid.

    As much as they spawned the same circular arguments, I kind of miss the console wars - bottom line was variety, competitive franchises - some actual choice. You didn't have big titles come out for each console, to think what some games over the years c o u l d have been if not forced to be developed for multiple consoles and expected to perform to similar standards.
    Exclusives are where it's at, true console-sellers, something the others don't have - otherwise we may as well roll each brand into one, lie down and be dogpiled by monopolies.

    Cool World proves that mixing European Dessin ANIME from France or Italy with American Live action doesn't nessercery work as a good consept whilst American Live Action and Cartoons mixed together did mix well as a consept. But then again you have Dessin and Full ANIME remixes which did work as a consept like M.A.S.K. and Mysterious Cities of Gold which combined both French and Japanese ANIME so why the American Live Action with Italian Dessin ANIME didn't work is beyond me but it's maybe because the Italian's didn't have as many hits as the French on the Dessin ANIME scene as The Little Train with the 3 Pink Bunnys and Big Bad Wolf by Harmony Gold is the only Dessin from Italy I even know of and that was because it was a VHS I watched as a kid so that is the only reason I know that one and it's pretty rubbish IDA film also.

    • @wrestletube1
      @wrestletube1 9 лет назад +1

      +Daniel Cordell Other than that all my known Dessins were French as those were what aired in non VHS form in the UK from the Dessin ANIME Scene. So I guess it kinda solves why Cool World didn't take off it's because Italian Dessin didn't take off before hand as the only versions yet alone English Dub versions of Italian Dessin we got in the UK and US was on VHS as well as them being handled by poor dubbing companies like Poo/Harmony Gold known for their bad voice acting and warpy Mono audio in Stereo VHS Tapes era. It didn't help Cool World get noticed for sure not having Italian Dessin on the TV unlike the French Dessin ANIME which was on all the time. The Italian Dessin ANIME drawings are top notch with funky colours

    • @wrestletube1
      @wrestletube1 9 лет назад +1

      +Daniel Cordell but it just had a poor scene in the west that was handled by poor companies and also VHS only without TV exposure so didn't work bringing IDA to a live action combi because we just wasn't ready because the scene never hit properly with good dubbers or TV exposure to do any good in films like Cool World. If Paramount like this film dubbed The Little Train the only one I know of rather than Poo Gold and also put it on their Viacom TV Networks then maybe Italian Dessin ANIME style would have got noticed properly enough to make a proper combi blockbuster from it ie. this film and people would have appreciated it more but it was panned due to not being ready for IDA/Live Mixed Blockbusters.

      +Daniel Cordell By the way the fake Sergio Minuti Bunnys in this Dessin just wasn't as good drawn as the original artists but I'm guessing the Italian guy working on Cool World did have an imsperation from The Little Train and got permission for the bootleg versions or maybe Sergio was part of it and put them in anyway but a differently drawn version or they are exactly the same like Roger Rabbit's nicked stuff but highter res so they looked weird compared but it's still weird to see a film nicking Sergio's work if The Little Train wasn't that good to begin with as we had to endure Poo Gold's dubbing on the English version. But then again because a English version might be crap the Italian version might not be as it did have lovely animation I guess.

    You know hyperbole is pronounced high-per-bo-lay, right?

    I have travelled from the year 2026, i have come to warn everyone about a game created in 2025, it is he worst game ever created, even worse than ET, it's called Kim Justice review world, yes thats right Kim puts his name to a game, the way it works, you play games from the past, (you have to try and find them first) and once you finish playing the game, you write a review, but if your opinion doesn't please the readers or they disagree with you too much you lose, you need to keep an approval rating of over 60% to get to the next level, we need to stop this game being made, OH wait, have I just created a time paradox? by telling you about the game, maybe now you want to make it, am I the reason the game was made?

    That's weird, the combat basketball arena has an Eldar rune from Warhammer 40k in the centre of the floor.
