I think a lot of it was living through it. There's a lot of stuff that gets largely lost to history despite being very well publicised back in the day. I recall a lot of the stuff that Guru Larry features for example from the various gaming magazines of the time (I still have them somewhere) but for some reason it's nigh impossible to find this information on the internet, at least not easily.

Firstly, that was highly entertaining! I learned stuff I didn't know, or perhaps forgotten, LOL!Secondly, wow... a huge chunk of my life right there. I might feel old and decrepit, but I have some great memories to keep me warm, as I sit in front of the fire with a blanket over my knee, and a hot cup of cocoa. Top stuff! ;o)

I won a Psygnosis competition once, I got whisked (by my dad) to the exotic location of, erm, the local paper's office car park, where the lucky winners could get a free game from the then-current Pysgnosis lineup. I got Lifeforce Tenka, a gruesome and sometimes confusing FPS.
Anyway, I didn't actually know they'd been responsible for this many of the great games of the mid-late(ish) 90's. Their 1997 lineup and my Christmas list for that year probably had a lot in common!

I know this is a very late reply, but this is why I stopped watching TV. People on youtube, with a motivation and talent I could never match, make much, much better content than TV execs would ever allow to be put out. Better researched, more interestingly produced, more down to earth, and funnier. People are surprised when I say I don't bother with TV, but I don't feel hard done by. At all!

    • @nebularain3338
      @nebularain3338 4 года назад +5

@@cwxdaf152 A lot say that people wouldn't work if they had no monetary motivation, but so many people are out there creating quality content just from passion alone. I realise that these RUclipsrs are getting revenue (now at least) but none of them started doing this for the money, and probably still would be doing it if they weren't getting paid.

Nice work, Psygnosis is no doubt one of the most iconic publishers/devs in Europe. I kinda disagree about Brian the Lion, it was a technical masterpiece considering it's an A500 game. The amount of colors, parallax scrolling and pseudo mode 7 effects was simply amazing.

Psygnosis, thank you guys for all the visual excellence of the late 80's and early 90's. Those games and their art made our teenage minds imagine wild and beautiful worlds and made us feel like the owners of god like computers.

Great show!As a young teen back in 89,I adored Psygnosis.Ive never had the same excited feeling of game shopping since those days. Walking into a game shop knowing you'll be buying a Psygnosis title and seeing rows of their beautiful game boxes! So many favourites, but my initial fav was Blood Money.SOTB was just mind blowing back then. The sound design, the graphics with large enemy sprites. All these things that are totally taken for granted these days, left us jaw dropped back then! I sold a lot of my shit over the years but just always held on to my original Psygnosis games/boxes..you just cannot sell or tip those boxes;works of art, easily.

What a fantastic video, thanks Kim.
I recall seeing a rolling Agony demo at Psygnosis' stand at the World of Commodore show at Earls Court sometime in '91. They had it playing on the biggest TV screen there (it was absolutely huge) and I was literally blown away with Tim Wright's music playing over the top which I believe was a track that never made it into the game itself. Wow, what a time it was to be 12 back then!

I really like Unirally, as it was called in the UK (a more approrpriate name since, unless I'm remember wrong, it was more of a time trail than a racer). You progressed in the game by beating your times. Random fact I just found out: according to the wikipedia, DMA were sued by Pixar, who claimed DMA had stolen the unicycle design from their film Red's Dream and they won, so Nintendo had to stop producing Unirally carts after the first run. A bit tragic since, as I say, it was a fantastic game

  • @Nostalgianerd

Well this is bloody marvelous Kim. I feel it somewhat goes hand in hand with my DMA Design documentary from the other day (although it wasn't a frickin' HOUR long! - impressive). Maybe we should enter into some sort of partnership where you cover the publisher and I cover the developer and we can all sit back into a state of retro bliss.

This was great to watch. Being from Kentucky in the U.S. my early gaming life ended up being very british it seems. The c-64, cracktros, demos, the A1000, Fat Agnes, Team 17, Anthrox, trainers and Psygnosis were all common words in my circle of friends for a long period of time. Yes, even in Kentucky. The full intro from Obitus was so amazing for the time.

Phenomenal video, Kim, Psygnosis was such a cornerstone for me as a kid. I played Blood Money to death on my A1000! Gaming on the Amiga, especially Psygnosis games, was about experiencing an audiovisual journey that could not be found on any other system at the time. It was a place the avant-garde could call home and push boundaries that needed to be pushed at the time when all the other platforms couldn't even come close to the same graphical fidelity.

I loved Shadow of the Beast 2. I Never got very far in, since it was so difficult, but it was such an involved story that you played rather than just getting from one side of a level to the other, feeling like you actually made a difference (like the puzzles to free other aliens etc.). Plus the sound effects and music! Even to this day the Amigas music in games holds my attention. If I hadn't been 10 at the time maybe I'd have understood what I was doing.

One of my favorite games by Psygnosis is the point-and-click mystery game Chrono Quest, it had a sequel, but it's the first game I remember on the Atari ST. It was super difficult. There were game-breaking issues if the inventory was mismanaged. I remember the anti-piracy paper grid that came with the game that I had to put over the game's box art and enter the colour. A bit like the monkey Island anti-piracy mechanism back in the day.

Another brilliant video. However, I strongly disagree that early Psygnosis games "showed off the Amiga". I still remember my shock, on buying "Barbarian" in 1987, at seeing how horrifically slow and jerky the sprite movement and scrolling was. I had never seen anything so shoddy in my life. At that time, fast, smoothly-moving graphics had been well-established for several years on the 8-bit machines, particularly on the C64. It was the very least we expected from a game. The first few Psygnosis games did not meet even this basic standard. In my case, I immediately returned my copy of "Barbarian" to the shop and got a full refund.

WipEouT is AMAZING. Its one of the few games that I can remember organizing my life around, and was intensely hooked on it for a short, but frenzied, time-period.
I loved the soundtrack. It all came together to feel like a game that had been bespoke designed for me.
Im sure, if we extrapolate that last sentiment - we would find that many others felt exactly the same as me.
I love WipEouT. WipEouT FuSioN is what I go to these days, on my PS2.

It is so sad that Hired Guns isnt remembered as the most riveting multiplayer experience ever! We used to play it deathmatch or team deathmatch with two monitor and books to hide the other players quarters. Days upon days of pizza and beer. It was EPIC!

Psygnosis more or less defined my early PSX days, so happy to see someone else remembered them!
I found CW: Vengeance to be nutbustingly impossible though, maybe I should go back and try again.

Excellent video. It's bittersweet seeing a reference to Laffer35 since his untimely passing, but I'm glad they left his channel up. He'll continue to be remembered and be a resource for videos like this one.

Sadly he took his own life. I only knew him from his channel, the comments section of my channel and Jimplaysgames' channel, but he was always quick with a kind word. Very sad indeed.

Sad isn’t it? What a brilliant studio lost to time, really bugs me how a studio of such quality doesn’t survive. I even love their logo, my favourite ever.

wipeout "is only ever a good game at best?" i don't think it's possible to overrate xl and 3. they're perfect. those plus wave race are my favorite racing game from that time.

XL was the American name for what we called WipEouT 2097 in the UK, I think? That game was fantastic. Plus it also had an instrumental version of Firestarter by The Prodigy and hit the shelves at JUST the right time for that fact to be a HUGE deal.
And because the game disc stored all its music as standard CDDA tracks I was able to rip all that lovely EDM and still have it in my music library to this day

Phenomenal vid, brought back a lot of memories for me. I still wheel out Novastorm on the Mega CD from time to time (still can't beat the second planet :P).
As a footnote, it would be ace to see a WipEout retrospective in the future. KUTGW!

Thank you so much for this video Kim, it was great to see the games and the background you never knew about being a kid just playing a game.
I loved Psygnosis, like a football club, good or bad I always supported them. The box art was amazing, and still looks amazing to this day. I loved the intros, was like being ready to watch the film. For my I loved Shadow of the Beast 2 the most, the box art, art cards, t-shirts, famous 10pints cheatcode 🤣, the music, I loved it all.
    Thank you once again 🙂

I can confirm the rumour about Lemmings coming from a DPaint animation is absolutely true. Myself and a friend visited DMA in Dundee with some artwork we were working on and they showed us the Lemmings animation which they were going to develop a game from. The rest, as they say, is history.
