@@theonlyMoancore He also says the soldiers have no personality, yet I hear them gag and scream at the sight of a grenade just about to explode. I disagree with some of the things he said. Just because a game doesn't have skins or "personality" it doesn't mean the gameplay is bad. That's just his preference with cosmetics and such. I think that's bollocks, it's like saying CS GO is good because of the skins and not the gameplay. He also blames the players for not playing Hardline, yet if I remember correctly, he also says it wasn't really a "battlefield" game, and forgets that if you brand something with a tag, people expect a certain something. Not to mention how scuffed the balance is in general. A game doesn't simply "die", it is killed. By the publisher and the board making dumb decisions. Happened with 5. Happened with Hardline. BF1 (ironically) despite being the lowest for him, is something people actually enjoyed more. "Only Assault" is useful is another thing I can't make sense of. I only play medic and every time I see a vehicle it gets ripped to shreds by teams with good coordination. Sure, he is right about switching to another class to combat someone bad game design (which it is), but I still don't see how you can't counter Scouts for example. You have ***s m o k e*** grenades. I wanted Hardline to succeed, I remember when the first trailer came out. But, as Joe would put it, they done f*ed it up.
They were going to add one as well as D-Day but the game was still getting so much negative feedback that they canceled it and went on to focus entirely on BF6
I feel like battlefield hardline got the cod:Ghost treatment. It was so drastically different from what the normal formula was at the time it ended up getting shunned at the peak of its player base. Despite the fact it introduced new features that would be used in future games
Ghosts had my favorite class building system, one based upon points rater than slots. This gave you way more freedom to build classes as if you don't use nades, that's 2 free points to use on perks or attachments. The 3 "classes" allowed for different play styles, each having different killstreaks. Assault forced you to get every kill in a single life for very attack oriented kill streaks, Support let you keep kills across lives to build up towards bigger, more group based kill streaks that while less lethal, could be more busted (ie a form of radar that showed every single bit of enemy info and couldn't be shut down) and Specialist which replaced killstreaks with stacked perks. I played specialist the most as I just loved the insmae number of perks and it felt fun Then the maps and field orders. Field orders giving you that secondary objective midgame that dropped upon death but gave a care package with a chance for either a nuke or map specific special killstreak were one of the best things in the game. The predator killstreak for the ruins map was so fun and I will never forget getting a 25 killstreak on strike zone and dropping a field order care package and grabbing 2 CHEM strikes on the map back to back. Then the weapons. No more unlocking one by one or needing a pack to unlock weapons. Dlc weapons were part fo a pack, and like most weapons in game, came with a special function or attachment you didn't add (honey badger had an auto equipped silencer for free). No set of weapons felt to op and my favorite guns were the worst in game, like the Chainsaw for its hilarity and the CBJMS for its absurd fire rate and reload despite piss poor accuracy past 10 ft. All in all, ghosts was my favorite and seeing the games grow more and more money hungry and the class system barely changing back and forth between black ops style and a hybrid style hurt me as why would you not pick the same 3 perks every time unless your load out couldn't function with one.
@@Freelancer837 I disagree these systems are nice to interact with and are often satisfying to use. While also adding another layer of depth to the game. Only issue I have is the support ammo box being rendered not as good thanks to static ammo positions, and the big medic box being made worthless outside of niche circumstances.
@@spacehitler4537 I disagree, easily one of the worst aspects about 5 that I contribute a lot of why it's a much worse Battlefield game in general. Even with it not being the best, I think Hardline by far had the best ammo/health system. Where for the most part it was just BF4's where you just give them to people if you have it, but they added the ability where you could pick up ammo/health off of the support/medic people yourself and didn't need to worry about them realizing that you're spamming for ammo/health
The story was pretty underwhelming, an kinda silly in places. Plus I feel when the criminal gangs in LA are closer to a well funded insurgency then a group of bank robbers then maybe it's time to call the National guard an not the cops.
yeah, doesn't stop it from not being fun. i had a friend that was obsessed with this idea that somehow games where you spawn in and immediately die like cannon fodder was fun, i used to play Arma 3 with him as the Zeus (basically glorified ARMA Dungeons and Dragons). i no longer play arma 3 and i don't really play anything with him anymore because i find his idea of fun irritating and annoying.
@@PatrickRatman it's not for everyone, some people like the chaotic nature. A good suicide charge can always be fun, because what if it works. Also they lead to some of the coolest moments
@@matnar0285 There's some really cool servers out there that run historically accurate loadouts too. I've had loads of fun playing operations with only standard issue rifles.
I remember asking a friend "How's Battlefield Hardline" and he just said "BF4 without tanks, it's not worth it". After this video I immensely regret not buying it just to satiate a curiosity.
It basically was, though the spawn system was also completely broken and content was a little light. It was fun as hell though and it's a fucking tragedy that visceral was forced to do it, did a great job, everyone shit all over them, and then EA closed them down just to have another studio revive their franchise.
Honestly this is probably one of the best vids you made J, I didn’t know much about Battlefield and somehow you made it so engaging and the care you showed for it, I just couldn’t help but learn to appreciate it as much as you do
12:16 Battlefield 1 also gave soldiers personality. Im situations where you're receiving a lot of suppressing fire, an objective is taken, or you squad is massacred you can hear them cry out, begging for the gunfire to end, and crying for their mommas. They're called "Intense Responses" and give the game a lot of immersion. You would be in a battle and hear "We shouldn't be here", "Stop firing, please", and the even more heartbreaking "Mama" along with many others for each country. Not saying this fixes all of battlefield 1's many mistakes just pointing out BF5 wasn't the only one that made the soldiers truly feel like where people who where scared, and didn't want to die. Its difficult to hear them over all the explosions and such, especially if you have the War Tapes audio setting on.
Yeah honestly last time I played hardline it was a few years back and I always thought it was the least liked one in the series until 5 came out. After watching this video I kinda want to install it again on my xbox one to try out to see if people still play it like bf4 or bf1 or even bad company 2
battlefield is a realistic game about war and historically accurate events. Apparently they didn’t have enough time to talk about how deadly an explosive plunger was in combat.
I grinded the ever loving hell out of Battlefield Hardline early 2019, I was really "good" at it (I'm not ashamed to admit I used the SG510 a lot), and I did okay, usually making it near top squad every game, and every time I played I learned something new, or found a new small thing I had never seen before. My jaw dropped when my friend first showed me Chompi, and I was immediately hooked, I bought all the DLC's and continued to play and get more friends into the game, because it showed so much more passion than any other game I had seen at the time. The Xbox one servers were relatively populated, albeit Downtown 24/7 was the most active, you could still find games with the rotating map pool. I never got to experience a full match DLC map, but with a friend I looked at every one from a single standpoint and it continued to blow my mind with how much was done for a game not many really seemed to care for. It saddens me that Visceral went under, and that another Hardline may actually be dead in the water, but I will forever stand by the game, and while my break from it has been long, I'd love to come back to it in loving arms and share some batshit insane gameplay with my friends another day. The video was astonishing J, I couldn't have agreed more with the frustrations BF1-V had brought to the table, and I'm really excited to see BF6, and your view on it as well after it has been out for a while. Keep up the amazing work my man, you are doing fantastic as always
@@holokyttaja5476 hardline was shunned because of its release time and the fact that it wasn't a military shooter, most didn't give it a chance.meanwhile bf1 released after awhile of no new Battlefield games was released next to the most hated cod so it had more coming from that game, and it was in time period majority of people haven't played a game in so it also had that drawing people in,it also has content creators saying its best game after bf4 because jo shmo RUclips man said game better means the games better so more people play because of that as well.also bf5 is literally a more refined version of bf1 and no one can change my mind on that
I disagree with a lot of points you have with BF1, so I'd like to share my opinion with you. It seems you have a lot of passion for BF1 so this is no disrespect, your opinion is your opinion. However you mentioned that assault is the best class and has the best weapons. You also mentioned later in that same segment that many of the maps are very open, as a criticism. I agree that getting sniped sucks, and is frustrating, and makes the game a bit less enjoyable, but the openness nerfs the assault to a degree so that it isn't as op. I think the medic class has the best weapons. They aren't as high DPS, but they are more reliable and have better handling. Not the best number wise, but good in practice. Last thing I want to say is that the game made you feel not like a soldier, but like cannon fodder. I think that means the devs did an excellent job, because that is what they were going for. Playing the first level of the campaign again will show you that. WW1 was BRUTAL, the soldiers were no more than cannon fodder. BF1 leans the most towards team work, and just sticking with your squad could get you numerous vehicle kills. Personally, I can never be effective in a tank when playing the objective. Anyway that's it, thought I'd share for anyone who might enjoy another view. Also yes artillery trucks suck.
I hate conquest in Battlefield 1 and 5 because the maps are so large you need a transport vehicle to get to the objectives because if you don't your gonna have a long walk a head of you which you can just get sniper half way through.i think if he played operations he would have a better time with the snipers, but then assault dominants operations because of the condensed area and the objectives being more compact it makes assault annoying af to deal with.also tanks become more of a mixed bag in operations because some maps there forced to push which makes them easy to take down but on other maps there dam near impossible to take down, also planes are annoying as always
@@badasscrusader Honestly snipers have become much less of a problem after I don't go out like a lone wolf and I don't run around like I'm taking a walk on central park. Don't go out without any people and run around like a madman if you know or feel a sniper's there and your sniper deaths will be MUCH lower, you just need to think about it.
One of the best parts of Hardline was the spray tag mechanic, you can just tag an area with your emblem source engine style. This includes riot shields so you and your friends can run around with shields with whatever emblem you made all over it
Dude, I can't believe you didn't even mention the Easter egg guns from Hardline, running my ass off to try to get the mammoth gun and coordinating with my friends to get the syndicate gun were some of the best memories I have from that game
By far your best video essay to date. You explained your opinions well, you covered counter-arguments and faults as you went, and a great amount of passion shown. Great work.
I didn’t even know Battlefield hardline existed till four months ago, It looks so good I bought it beat the story in the night then try to get on a multiplayer match and couldn’t find one. This makes me sad.
I really hope that because of these past steams and videos showing how great hardline is will bring a resurgence like it did to titanfall 2. The game really deserves a lot of love
I tried to play Hardline through Origin Pass at one point but it just refused to work. Which is a shame because I tried it out on a friends' PS4 way back, and the customisation of optics and camo was an absolute blast as well
Battlefield 5 was my first big introduction into battlefield (I played BC and BC2 as a kid and they were fun) and legitimately I had so much fun as a medic, playing Iwo Jima and sprinting across no mans land like a fucking madman reviving everyone I possibly could, and spamming the heal button to everyone I can, even to the point that me and several other medics made it really fun and near easy to sweep through all the points and win the game, I felt so much pride seeing the win I helped get because of being a medic main and helping. Also hardline was so underated and I had fun roleplaying a cop and using the text chat to tell the enemy team to pull over while im chasing them down.
I've never played a Battlefield game, I've watched all of the recent videos of them you made (and enjoyed them lots) and I sat through this whole video, and I've enjoyed every moment of it. Thank you J for what you do!!!
I never really thought about how good hardline was compared to the other battlefield games because it was my intro in to battlefield and I really enjoyed playing it
Idk why but I absolutely loved the radio on Hardline. I was always trying to find Blame Game or Blaze Up the Fire to bump up while speeding around in a Sedan/Cruiser
you learned wrong, he said not to play hardline because the game's dead. i can back him up on that. just bought it and after downloading it all day, the game launched _once_ for me. then it disconnected my headset and froze during the first 5 minutes of me playing, quality stuff. just buy battlefield 4 instead, or wait for battlefield 2042 at this point
One of my childhood favorites that was severely underrated when it was somewhat living. Battlefield Hardline was a very swag game where you can play copper and play WHOOP WHOOP IT'S THE SOUND OF THE POLICE as you drive up with your swat team and stop the PayDay Gang. Glad to have Watched this otherwise i would've forgotten it existed xd
8:24 - 9:00 "I don't feel like a soldier, I feel like a number." That's how soldiers feel. That's what they are. Of course it's not balance, it's realistic. I'm not making that a justification, just making a testemate on how well they nailed the feeling of WWI. When I play Battlefield, I'm not trying to feel like a badass. I'm trying to recreate a situation where a soldier would actually be in. I haven't played the other Battlefield games, only Battlefield 1. I agree that it is a really imbalanced game. But that's why I respect it more like a simulator rather than a full-on game. (This whole tangent was really stupid XD) * gets to the Battlefield V section* Aaaaand there goes my argument
My main issue when Hardline came out was with how the release of it felt more like a dlc with different concept I know it isn't now but at the time I just did not feel like jumping into a second battlefield when I am already in one that is still going strong. Plus money was not something I could easily throw around so I was happy sticking to one and keeping what little money I had
I still remember playing the beta of hardline on xbox 360 still could never figure out why people disliked it and ive had more fun on bf5 then any other battlefield and thats due to playing with friends on panzer storm and running a full blown tank division. Awesome video j!
with the BF5 cosmetics i liked that a lot of them were actually just cosmetic but there were 2 outfits in particular i really did not like, the ghillie suits, which did give you an advantage when you can just prone in a bush and become completely invisible unless somebody was lucky enough to see a scope glare or a nametag
It’s really interesting how all of his critiques for battlefield 1 ultimately boil down to realism vs enjoyment. All of the complaints he had make sense from the perspective of creating a game based largely off of the power dynamic in world war 1. That power dynamic being: people are cannon fodder, vehicles hold all the power, and automatic weapons rein supreme. They translated all of those ideas really well into video game format, but to say that power dynamic isn’t very fun in a video game that is meant to be fun, is a great critique. Battlefield 1 succeeded really well at its goal of translating the dynamics of WW1 into a video game, only issue is that those dynamics aren’t very fun sometimes. Battlefield 1 did really well matching its setting, just the setting isn’t very fun to play. Realism and historical accuracy should always come second to fun and enjoyment, unless the game is solely meant to be realistic. That’s why I didn’t really get the complaints over battlefield 5, why is the realism so important, maybe I’m misunderstanding the BF5 complaints idk. I personally enjoy battlefield 1 a lot, but then again it’s the only battlefield game I’ve played so I wouldn’t know anything else.
Good work J, and you avoided going on another 4 minute tangent of... "I like the melee killing animations/stabbing people is personality/this is a cry for help, I am about to go spree killing, the voice is getting loud now."
I really wish Hardline wasn't dead, I played it for a bit recently with EA Play and it was honestly pretty damn fun for the times I could actually find a populated server with more than 10 people in it lol
BF1, you're a unit within a squad; that was the emphasis of the entire game from the beginning, you gain more points when playing within you squad. This is why the team with two well coordinated squads would always win the match Imagine in a RPG a healer, support or range build was able to out damage a DPS/tank build.
I am so glad to hear someone else say how I always felt about Battlefield V. The atmosphere, the feeling of being a genuine solider in a genuine battle has never felt as strong for me in any other game. Everything from the sound design, the maps, the character customization, all of it just adds to a genuine feelings of immersion. Tanks and other vehicles feel dangerous and scary, but not invincible. It is a beautiful game, and the only one capable of making me FEEL like I'm almost actually there, rather than just playing a video game. My problems with it come from the technical side. The non-existent anti-cheat, the weird lack of team balancing, the grind to unlock more company coins, so that i can unlock not just cosmetics, but more weapons and upgrades for those weapons. It has a lot of frustrating bugs, or just plain unpolished parts as a whole, but for the actual boots on the ground fighting, it's absolutely incredible, and I'm anxious to see if they'll be able to keep that same feeling into the next Battlefield.
The worst part is that title died the fastest of all Battlefields. I just love bfh I wanted to buy for my new account but when I heard that it only has 2 servers... man it's heart braking
I think the best or at least the most memorable battlefield for me has to be battlefield 2 modern combat, that game was so made me feel so cool and as a child this was the first game to leave an impression so strong almost 14 years later i still remember the story to some extent and all of that because of one mechanic and that's the switching between soldiers when you want, though I didn't play multiplayer because you needed stuff for that on the ps2 but it incarnated what i always felt like when playing games, an entity that is possessing the characters in a game and it was so unique that nearly nothing could rival how much I loved that game and the only game that rivaled it was black, that game was also awesome
Battlefield 1 had the best Infantry dynamics besides assault being moderately overpowered. Nothing beats the feeling of outfragging everyone on a server with an infantry Mauser 98 on infantry maps.
I always felt bad liking battlefield 5 more then 1 because it felt for balanced (as a medic main) so it feels good to find someone who feels the same way
On your vehicle point, I’ve actually had the opposite issue with vehicles. I’ve always found vehicles underpowered in BF. Got an issue with heli’s? Lock on rocket launcher, tank cramping your style? Land mines and RPGs baby, bombers? Fighters got you covered. I’ve never experienced this “OP vehicle” issue that you mention. But BF hardline was absolute dogshit from what I played. BFH was a corner camping nightmare for me and shotgun rushing was way too effective. The weapons were unbalanced. Then you had the more open maps that were sniper heaven, those are what made me quit. The other issue I had with was with the vehicles. Cars were annoying as you didn’t have that many ways to deal with them, heli’s had the same issue. To kinda put my personal BF experience into context: I have mainly played BF3, BF4, BF1 and BFH. I never really stuck to one class either, I played as assault, engineer, support and even sniper every now and then. I’ve never really stuck to one class.

I feel like battlefield hardline got the cod:Ghost treatment.
It was so drastically different from what the normal formula was at the time it ended up getting shunned at the peak of its player base. Despite the fact it introduced new features that would be used in future games
Literally the Windows Vista of Battlefields.
And was also not that bad at least in comparison to other games of the same name
What offer cod Ghost compare to others cod?
I played specialist the most as I just loved the insmae number of perks and it felt fun
Then the maps and field orders.
@@fuzzyhughes3622 based. Plus extinction was a lot of fun

I’m surprised you didn’t mention the building mechanic in 5, it’s pretty nice to be able to make a trench or sand bag wall, can come in pretty handy.
Honestly its such a amazing thing
yeah some people say it's just a gimmick but it is extremely useful
Oh gosh, I hated the building system in BFV. That, the revive system, and the ammo/healing bag system is so dumb and shitty
Thank you I'm not the only one who loved Hardline

It was very misunderstood because it was different, then bf5 happened and we never knew how good we had it.

I remember asking a friend "How's Battlefield Hardline" and he just said "BF4 without tanks, it's not worth it". After this video I immensely regret not buying it just to satiate a curiosity.
Bf4 with a personality

"I hope BF6 doesn't have this problem with classes" WELLLLLLLLLLLL ABOUT THAT
I was a bit upset he didn't show my favorite hardline quote, bailing out of a helicopter as the pilot with a passenger: "Here you fly this thing."
His battlefeild 1 part the video was kinda wacky
One of the best parts of Hardline was the spray tag mechanic, you can just tag an area with your emblem source engine style. This includes riot shields so you and your friends can run around with shields with whatever emblem you made all over it

That's how soldiers feel. That's what they are. Of course it's not balance, it's realistic. I'm not making that a justification, just making a testemate on how well they nailed the feeling of WWI. the thing i loved most about bf4 was the theme that faded in near the end of the a match feels badass
