2042 is a jarring change in the BF series, i'm not talking about theme or placement like a time period, that's interchangeable. The way the simple gameplay of classes and teamwork has been unique and fun for almost 2 decades has been tweaked upon in the worst ways imaginable.
Gameplay wise 2042 IS FINE. IT LETS YOU SHOOT PEOPLE WITH A GUN. However in every category that is comparable to a previous installment, another battlefield has done it better. The gunplay is weaker and the gun choice is lower, the gadgets are weak and take too long to unlock. (incendiary grenades are level 39 and the SOFLAM is 58.) The specialists all look the same and the vehicles are way too strong with no counter AGAIN.
the identity of your player and the value of a squad has been nullified to bring in these "specialists" to try and give the player a sense of attachment to a character. When in reality that only works in games with severe styles and new IP's or established IP's that work with Hero shooters or specialist genre's already.
Battlefield is not a hero shooter and it never should've become one. Your love for the game and your squad and the ability to customize your character to a large degree has turned to ash and smoke with the addition of these hard locked characters.
DICE saw how poorly BFV did with it's introduction of black Nazi's and blamed the community for it. When in reality customization of BFV's level would've been astounding in a game like 2042 or BF4.
They tried something new, failed, then doubled down on it. I should NOT have bought this game, but it's too late. I was a fool and assumed EA was better, and I was severely wrong.
The launch bugs are NOT what is disappointing with this game. I've played a lot of Battlefields and bugs are the LEAST of my worries with the series. Because to DICE's track record they fix launch bugs incredibly fast and reliably. I'm upset I can't put the god damn wingsuit on a character I actually want to play.

I’ve never played a Battlefield game, but even I understand the problem of making unique ‘hero’ characters in a game where there are dozens of players on both sides dying over and over in a single match.
It simply doesn’t feel right. If these guys are so unique and special, why are they on the frontlines being fed to the meat grinder? The whole point of Battlefield is just that you’re just another footsoldier, ready to die and do your own little bit. Not some action hero who single handedly saves the day.

TF2 has unique "hero" characters just clashing at each other relentlessly on explosive-filled places, but they managed to be actually distinguishable from one player to another with the customization for weapons that actually mattered and the existence of sub-class that may change the playstyle and even how the match is played out radically.

@@aereonexapprentice7205 The reason why TF2 works so good with "heroes" is that each character has a theme and their own stats. Each character has different health values, and equipment tuned to their theme. A battle engineer with Frontier Justice and mini sentry still plays like an engineer, just more with a bit different and more aggressive playstyle.
BF2042 on the other hand is operators with a different themed gadget but everything else is swappable, so they all feel the same except for voicelines and a single slot on the loadout. If everybody can be anything, and everybody is special, no one is. Also even though BF games have "generic soldier" as their character, the class limitations to weapons and possible equipment made each class feel unique instead of blurring all the classes together like a bad AI generated face.

It looks to me that the decision to change the class character system into a hero character one was following a trend. It is normal for a business to try to follow a trend and make it work. I've been playing Battlefield since Battlefield 2, I still have a disc copy of that game on my shelf.
I don't even know what to think about 2042. The main thing about the BF franchise compared to games like COD was the squad play, the team work, about you and your squad of buddies fucking dominating the enemy because you had an amazing medic, a great support who keeps your boys loaded up, a wicked sniper who uses gadgets to spot enemies for you and an assault to smash some fools.
Yes the layout of these classes has changed over time, with gadgets falling into different roles, but each role was identifiable at even a glance.
That's what 2042 lacks. Identity. If you showed this game to someone in 2014 when BF4 was at the height of it's power without context that 2042 was a BF game they likely wouldn't even recognize it as being one.
Sure Portal might be fun, but you shouldn't have to play a custom game mode to get the experience your franchise is built off of. It's a very poor decision that is honestly baffling to the mind how they thought it was a good idea.
I don't think I'll be getting 2042, at least not for a while.
I feel you JFJ, this didn't really feel like a Battlefield game. And as someone who used to run the Special Forces class just to blow up my enemy commanders radar and UAV stations, that's saying something.

It had pretty good customization with weapons and tools unique to the Great War, charging headfirst into battle at the sound of a whistle gave me goosebumps, gameplay was unbalanced to be real but each class was still useful and most weapons are fun to use. I could just feel the exaggerated swagger of a traumatized french conscript. Anyways the recent trend of battlefield games seems to be a nosedive with bf1 being the last great one before the *downward spiral*

Not to mention I don't think they understand adding in unwanted mechanics like the mercenaries or agents with specific abilities is going to also hurt the core game.
Honestly if they ran the customization they did in BF-V it would've definitely worked here.

I've heard a lot of rumors that BF2042 was originally designed as a battle royale and was turned into a more typical battlefield game part way through development.
Stuff like the massive maps, hero characters and very limited weapon variety would make a lot of sense in a battle royale game, but don't work in a battlefield game.

My first game of Hazard Zone my team got a drive, dropped in the OP car, killed two squads and stole their shit, extracted. All in all I would play again, but not the way it currently is with how squads are set up, there's no way to play solo (and even if there was, the OBJs suck for solo play), extracts being limit 2 is interesting, but with the way battlefield is supposed to be played there's really no merit there.
I'd rather have a map be constant and extracts be just drones that take the drives away so you can go back in and fight more. Make drives constantly fall from the sky, extracts be in specific marked out areas that get pinged whenever someone goes for it, and add buy stations for purchase of guns, gadgets, and ammo after extracts. Then when a player wants to leave the game they can do the thing in BF4 with the balloon and big plane that yoinks you for a refund on gear purchased in game.

When I played the beta the game was everything I was scared it was going to be, a regression to all those things I found unpleasant about the game-feel of bf4 without those things that kept me coming back. Thankyou for getting a great video out of this thing at least!

What they should do is make it so you can pick your operator perks. So you can be bush man with a Wingsuit rather than forcing you. They won't go back to the old as it would be a LOT of work.
I think, given a few months, will be sick. But as of now... Halo Infinite exists...
They should add some smaller maps with smaller player counts. Basically future Battlefield 4 maps.

It feels like they could have had the normal class system AND the sick specialist gadgets. Bring back all the usual classes, but put an extra gadget slot for specialist gadgets. Also, make them class specific. Recon gets Casper’s drone (and maybe wingsuit idk) for example. Engineer can have Liz’s rocket launcher and Sundance’s grenades to choose between. You get the idea.
But EA had to have their monetization.

14:36 From what I read on PCGamer, Update #3, which is coming in December, would add
    - A UI that tells you who can revive you when downed,
    - Resource icon above players that shows they can provide health or ammo when you're low on either
    - You can ping to downed players that you're coming to revive them
    - Some things for portal
    - Some other shit that they don't specify
The first two should've been in the game at launch, while the last one is a neat addition, that should help make things easier to get people back up before they off themselves. Portal stuff is nice.
I'll sum up BF2042 as a good shooter game, for people looking to unga bunga head empty shoot game, but a bad Battlefield game, looking for the objective heavy teamwork game, with lots of space, vehicles, and players. Funnily enough(or not funnily, depending on who you ask) you can compare BF2042's reception to B4B's receptions, in that fans of the originals aren't happy with the changes while the people that are looking for something different or are new to the space are fine with the change in formula.

So check this out. Every game (with the exception of bfv) having you play as a generic, soldier #1563673 instead of setting you up with a operator was a very good thing in my opinion since it helped immerse you into each match you played. Playing as that random, nameless soldier amongst the other nameless soldiers on your team made it feel like you were apart of that conflict even more. You don't really get that feeling with these operators, especially since your bound to run into yourself sooner or later down the line.
Furthermore, like J said, having the class system being reflected on how each soldier looked...fucking worked. For example, in each game (again with the exception of Bfv somewhat) you always knew who your medic was, who your engineer was, sniper, and support. Hell, I can tell out a medic in BF:H alot better than in Bf2042.
I love Battlefield a lot, hands down. But from what I've seen so far, it feels like a glorified Modern Warfare.
