    Wow, 3 heroes from SotM! Personally, I would have put braxas ahead of nilfheim, but still a great list. Future vid suggestion: top 10(ish) units from each Valkyrie general? That might be fun.

    Nice choices my favorites are Johnny shotgun Sullivan and Rhogar Dragonspine. Also on this topic, I have this heroscape game mode I've been playing with my friends recently and I'd like to pitch it to you. it's great for when you have 4 to 7 people I call it questing. there is one boss player and multiple team players. the team players all create an army consisting of only one figure and places them at the beginning of the board (I find this works best in boards that are set up in sort of a line). then the boss player adds the cost of each players army multiplies it by the number of players then divides it by 2, the then boss creates an army of that many points. all the team players fight the boss player, and it's balanced because while the boss player has a lot more figures and points at his disposal the team players each get to take a turn with their single character every time the boss gets to take a turn, like in a six player game the team gets to move and attack 5 times (once for each hero) for every time the boss gets to move once(but with the bosses army having 2.5 times the teams point he can afford to take some hits). we were just playing for fun but it seemed suprisingly balanced and fun, what do you think of it? are there any other heroscape modes like it that you know of?

    • @SirHeroscape
      @SirHeroscape  8 лет назад +1

      +HeresJohnny It sounds like you've got a pretty good game mode going there. As far as game modes like that, yes. I have a group I play with every 2 weeks and I act as "gamemaster" and we do all kinds of games, but recently I've been doing more 'adventurers vs. boss' type game modes. Very similar to your idea, I tend to be the boss or objective while the rest of the players work together to reach a common goal etc. Best thing to do is to play your game mode a couple times and flesh out any inconsistencies or imbalances. If you're familiar with League of Legends - the online video game - I just recently developed a game mode to play Heroscape League of Legends with adjusted rules, map instructions and everything. We've played it once so far and it's been really fun, but now I'm altering a few things before we do it again in order to make sure the game is balanced and progresses without becoming stagnant.

    • @HeresJohnny295
      @HeresJohnny295 8 лет назад

      +Sir Heroscape I've never played league but that sounds pretty awesome. and on the balancing thing, I decided to let the boss use 2 to 3 X order markers because they always get targeted by the players, so the misdirection is key. that was something I learned through a couple of trial runs in which I only attacked once per round lol.

    • @HeresJohnny295

      +HeresJohnny I'll have to think about it. I'd probably have to do a short 2-3min video with clips of it...b/c those bigger games we play typically go 3-4 hours. We usually play on large maps and 6-8 players. But I'll definitely be taking pictures at least

  • @Dracus360

    Valguard! Love the Sacred Band and related builds, so underrated. Call me stupid, but never did I think to use his 7 life to disengage to take advantage of First Assault. Derp. All your other picks are worthy of their places. Nilfheim and Sonlen are favorites of mine too, in fact I often draft Nilfheim with Kelda, Rhogar, or Sonlen. If you can keep him healed, Nilfheim's a terror. Great list.

    • @SirHeroscape
      @SirHeroscape  8 лет назад

      +Dracus360 It's funny b/c I'd always though Sacred Band were useless until I read some battle reports on the great synergy you can use with them...and then I started playing with them and Valguard and parmenio and I was loving it with them buffed. Add in Marcus and then you get +1 move and adjacent +1 attack :)

    I'm actually surprised that I was familiar with using as many of the heroes in this video as I was. Though, admittedly, I never ran Sonlen myself. He certainly is a busy hero, though! My personal favorite hero is Ne-Gok-Sa, with his solid stats and the rare but impressive success with Mind Shackle. It might not be the most practical thing, but I like having the occasional gamble to make big changes in a game.

    • @SirHeroscape
      @SirHeroscape  8 лет назад +2

      +majora787 So true! If you've watched my game on Breeze vs. the Mezzodemons and Ne-Gok-Sa, there were way too many close calls, and if any one of those rolls had been a mindshakle, that would have been the game.

  • @idkman5838
    @idkman5838 8 лет назад

    Sonlen is pretty amazing! But three characters that are on my list are Theracus, Wyvern, and Saylind, In my opinion saylind is the best out of the three because she can change the game dramatically by summoning someone like Jotun or Charos, Wyvern can pick enemies up and carry them away from heroes that are in trouble, and Theracus, since you can combine him with Venoc warlord and Acolarth and he has a move of 11! Meaning he can carry figures a long way, (for the first turn then he just gets a move of nine because he is no longer adjacent to Acolarth) But those are my favorite support characters.

    • @SirHeroscape
      @SirHeroscape  8 лет назад +1

      +Legoman 2198 oh wow! I didn't even think about that with Theracus getting buffed by Venoc Warlord...that's super legit! Totally agree with Wyvern, very strategic character...and Saylind is one I haven't played much....so I'll have to change that and see just how good summoning can be.

  • @matthek22ify

    I must disagree with you saying that Raelin SotM is more versatile. Raelin RotV is significantly more versatile because of how MUCH she buffs-- while no, one defense die is never bad however an extra defense die on a 4 defense character (to give them five defense) or a 1 or 0 defense character is not nearly as useful as a 2 defense bonus on the same character-- both statistically and in practice.
    The jump from 3 to 4 defense is one of the most important defensive jumps in the game. It greatly increases the chance of two shields and allows for a plausible defense against attacks of three and increases defense against attacks of 4. Five to 6 is similarly effective, as it allows for much more effective defenses against common attack amounts of 4 and a reliable defense against three. In a squad vs squad dominated game where each damaging hit will net you in most cases only one effective wound (as is most cases in high end heroscape) these averages add up and equate to a statistical advantage to Raelin RotV. Original Raelin will always provide these jumps, esp among many mid-power meta game squads (take Arrow Gruts boosted by one swog, Knights jump for 4 to 6 defense, Heavies boosted by one champ, Krav plus high ground, Nilfhiem, etc etc) for a lower price. In addition the 80 point cost increases her versatility in army compositions compared to her counterpart who in about half the situations will not be providing the optimal statistical advantage compared to her RotV Rae.
    Additionally, Raelin RotV is a very powerful figure psychologically. If you have her positioned correctly (which isn't always an easy task given the army she is in) she can be both difficult to kill yet an opponents absolute number one priority. It is hard to justify taking on Sacred Band with 5 shields as opposed to 3 shields when all you have to do is drop the average life/defense Raelin in front of you. The ability of a player to know how to effectively shield Raelin and maximize the use of her defense bonus while STILL being able to press a constant offensive is the key to playing Raelin. Their are many subtle nuances to Raelin play that make her such an interesting character to me that go beyond her 2 defense aura BECAUSE she is often the most important figure to keep alive in an army, esp in those early stages that make me GLAD that she is a part of the meta game even if that means that she can slow it down quite considerably. Even if she gets no Order markers after her first one or two, she is the focal point of an army and a bad placement of her can mean the difference between a win or a loss, as well as the knowledge of when to forgo her aura entirely to gain height advantage over an opponent can lead to impressive comebacks and take a opponent by surprise, among many other small, but extremely important, things to consider when playing the single most played figure in heroscape.
    However, I do understand that this is a more personal list which I respect and understand, and this is not to say SOTM Raelin is a weak figure-- in fact, she DOES work better with a select number of builds (Zombies and Marro Drones come to mind) esp those common squads that are at three defense and are two fast to be tied by RotV Raelin. Her Whirlwind assault isn't a game winner (if it was a special I think she would be a significantly better pick) but definitely makes her a real threat to low defense (3 or less) common squads. (A combo that I think is actually incredibly potent is her plus stingers-- that 4 defense is very strong versus the squad meta and they often attack at a disadvantage vs range, so the plus one defense will be well received because they often fail to get high ground when fighting 7 plus ranged units and must rely on sheer force and number to overcome additionally they are extremely cheap for their abilities, making them accommodating to a more expensive Raelin)

    • @SirHeroscape
      @SirHeroscape  8 лет назад

      I agree with what you have said. And I appreciate the extent to which you've explained your view. The MAIN reason I tend to pick Raelin SotM over RotV is b/c I tend to run builds with less of a slow pod feel and more of an open and fast paced feel. RotV Raelin forces you to channel your army within the 4 spaces she covers and I've found that that restricts me too much overall and the way I play. I believe your right that she manipulates your opponent b/c I've always made her my top priority when I fight against her. Unfortunatley for most of my opponents, they haven't done well to protect her overall and so I've rarely seen her used very effectively (and that includes tournament play).

    • @matthek22ify
      @matthek22ify 8 лет назад

      And this is why I love Heroscape. Raelin is, I believe, one of the most devastatingly worst figures to have played ineffectively ESPECIALLY RotV version-- because she sacrifices board position for added defense. Every OM you put on her is a wasted opportunity for height, a glyph or the all important first strike (seriously, that one is HUGE). So it is entirely possible you have only seen bad Raelin play and I have heard of entire HS scenes that have less of a Raelin showing because they have a local meta more akin to first strike and aggressive play. I just played a game with Swarm Raelin-- she is still a darn pleasure to have in an army don't get me wrong haha. I have had great success in games with Zoms and Swarm Raelin. I really do think the 16 figure format low-mid to high-mid point totals that are featured in tournament these days are conducive to SO many different play styles and I love the fact that both Raelins are completely viable. We need to get in another Online Heroscape game sometime--
      Arrow Grut ;)
      PS loving the content! watched 4 or 5 battles, no HW done. Thanks a lot :P. PS I agree with another suggestion for list of top 5 or 10 maps!

    No love for Dirty Dead Eye Dan, the most broken 60 point figure with instant kill against anything? JK, although I do have fun with Dan, my favorite hero is probably NGS or Feral Troll. Always hated Sonlen, only used him in 2-3 games, but I'm guessing my d20 never liked me because I always feel like his powers never work.

      +fermat101 Ah yes! He is an absolute beast! Right now I'm organizing a tournament here locally and the army builds are 540pts for the tourney. I've been playtesting a few different armies for running in the tourney and right now my favorite is Warforged Soldiers X4, Krav Maga, and Siege. My playtest record with that army is 7-1'ish...I've only lost once with our playtests so far. So I'm pretty pleased and will likely run that army in the tourney.

    My top 10 Heroes
    1. Krug (8 lives, wounded smash and double attack can make for a powerful combo provided you don't get too comfortable in letting him take damage, best when supported with Arrow Gruts, Swog Riders, and Kelda, and possibly Mimring)
    2. Braxas (I love squad hunting with Acid Breath, and she's a decently resilient attacker to boot, not to mention her lore makes her feel like a boss)
    3. Cyprien Esenwein (a versatile hero hunter who can go wherever he's needed basically instantly with move 8 and stealth flying, not to mention his lore makes him feel like a boss)
    4. Taelord the Kyrie Warrior (the best defense is a good offense, and a plus 1 attack aura that combos well with the Minions of Utgar is very good offense, not to mention his Flying ability is actually missing the disengagement rule because it was a prototype version of Stealth Flying)
    5. Sgt. Drake Alexander (SotM) (I love my villains, but Sgt. Drake is a beast, especially later on with essentially-Flying-minus-2, Thorian Speed and a pistol along with his 6 attack and slightly better defense)
    6. Kelda the Kyrie Warrior (hands down best healer in the game by far who's only ever failed me when my dad picked her first... which was usually)
    7. Sir Denrick (My dad always picks Charos, and I love killing Charos. And who more thematically appropriate to kill a giant than the giant slayer? Plus bonding with tank knights with 3 dice on LEAs for severe enemy lockdown.)
    8. Su-Bak-Na (slight 20-sided buff to my Stinger squads and possibly other Warlords/Hivelords, reliable flying hero hunter that bonds well with Nagrubs, a must-have in any Marro army, particularly in 1000 point games, which I play a lot)
    9. Zelrig (just because my opponent isn't using Venoc Vipers doesn't mean they shouldn't be rolling 0 defense dice, not to mention his lore makes me feel regal when I use him)
    10. Raelin the Kyrie Warrior (both) (Raelin can be either an excellent assault protector or position defender, best to choose based on battlefield, scenario, and starting position if possible)
    My top 10 Squads
    (I usually only owned one of each squad, so the swarming potential of a squad was rarely a factor for me; the power of the squad was what mattered.)
    1. Gorillanators (surprisingly awesome when I tried them out, 1 defense doesn't look like much, but Tough deals with a lot of attacks on its own, and with amazing speed and range, they can easily get early-game high ground and glyphs and start shooting with advantage)
    2. Anubian Wolves (hero hunting menaces that can roll ridiculous dice with luck, though I have misgivings about running Khosumet for lack of bonding)
    3. Minions of Utgar (deadly strike is a damage beast, 6 defense is nice and tank-y, combos well with Taelord, and a move of 4 can be surprisingly fast when flying depending on the battlefield)
    4. Krav Maga Agents (one shield blocks all damage at range is just evil when you have a good meat shield)
    5. Microcorp Agents (versatile advantage options, particularly good on waterfall battlefields, and Stealth Armor has saved a few games for me)
    6. Knights of Weston (tank knights with 3 dice for LEA that bond with the giant killer or possibly with aura and spirit Vikings; always worth the points)
    7. Airborne Elite (risky but profitable, able to take all the high grounds and glyphs instantly and protect with very long range and grenade attacks; I've rarely regretted putting points here)
    8. Omnicron Snipers (Minions of Utgar but weaker and with range)
    9. Venoc Vipers (cheap, expendable, early-game-glyph-snatchers for left-over drafting points)
    10. Marro Stingers (decently priced, decently ranged, decently strong, and I actually have two squads because of the SotM master set)

      I slightly disagree. I think his point total is accurate. Yes I consider him one of the best figures but there have also been games where he gets taken out really quick because of his low defense. The key is to know how to use him and build a strong supporting army around him. But yes in his own right he is very strong and can hold his own

We only had RotV and SotM master sets with a few expansions...and that was it. I never played competitively or knew how to play really. It wasn't till about 2 years ago that I really got back into it and started expanding my collection and playing with friends again. But even then it didn't really start taking off until a little over a year ago when I started making my own custom characters and terrain.
