I have a ton of HS stuff, but sadly I don't know anyone these days with the time to play this or other in depth war games/board games. The terrain is fantastic as you said. There's nothing like it. They took all the cool things about strategy war games and boiled them down to a simple and incredible looking durable mass produced product. I wish they would start producing them again.
Horoscope is absolutely my favorite game of all time. Thanks Tom for doing your "Why I Love" series! It is good to see you excited and happy while talking about games again. Seems like too many of the Dice Tower videos have negative spins/topics these days. The love you have for the games in this series shines through and reminds me of why I was hooked on Dice Tower (Tom Vasel) years and years ago.
I love the building aspect of it. In fact that's what got me to buy in the first place. Sure it takes a while to set up and tear down but it's worth it. What I like to do is have each player build their own map and then we connect them all to make one giant battlefield.
I'm gonna keep all my Heroscape stuff forever, customs included. I'll pass it on to my kids and tell them to keep passing it on and so on, and if any of my descendants decide to sell even one piece of terrain or miniature, I will come back as a spirit and haunt them until they get it back! Heroscape will stay in my family.... Forever.
I never understood why heroscape wasn't a huge hit. It looked amazing, was easy to learn, really fun to play, no glue or paint unless you wanted to customize, and combined so many genres. You'd think it would've killed Warhammer
I own just about two or three of everything Heroscape, but I wish like hell that Heroscape would return. Maybe Fantasy Flight could take it over like they took over Cosmic Encounter?
Still have my copy of it in my closet :) Never play it anymore due to setup, but it is a load of fun. My box is pretty destroyed though from trying to put all the terrain back in the box when I was younger.
just picked up a box of the valkyrie starter kit, the castle expansion and a few of the smaller expansions for just $20 today through a local facebook trading group :D.
the thing I miss the most is the theme. Still have most of my minis, but had to get rid of the terrain because of space issues. I brought 2 packs of the Roman legion. Loved it.
What a great game! I sold my terrain and a few of the minis back a few years ago when I was low on money and was having a hard time finding players anyway. You know, when a game is 'dead' some people seem to think it is no longer worth playing. I ask them if they still play the 'dead' game of chess that hasn't had a new unit introduced in hundreds of years. :) I still have Magic the Gathering Planeswalkers though and love playing it. It's my favorite way to enjoy MTG. I've sort of started playing Heroscape again, only without all the cool terrain and dice. I'm using regular D6s and saying that the even numbers are attack icons and odd numbers are defense icons. To make the chance balance the same as Heroscape, I say that the one (1) is the blank side. I love the HS card templates! I love making my own cards.
@@themesongfan452 That's really cool! Where did you hear that? I'd like to read about it. I wondered when it was 'dying out' if it would come back someday. It's really the perfect way to visually show terrain in games so that elevation advantage/disadvantage, movement restrictions, line of sight, etc. are clear to everyone at the table.
@@enfieldjohn101 I first heard it on Sir Heroscape's youtube channel, then found the article and the teaser-tweet on the Heroscapers website corroborating it. Since then, there has been an exposition from Avalon Hill at a con, and information has been trickling down--mostly through Sir Heroscape's channel--at a steady pace.
Owned heroscape as a kid and sadly had no one to play it with so I played by myself. I literally have more memories of building and playing that game solo than any other toy or game as a kid. It's a shame I didn't take care of my set 😭
Me and a friend both bought it back in the day and put our 2 boxes together to create really funky maps and we had a ton of fun. Eventually we gave it away to friends (and their children), but now I know it's become rare we will get it back and play again ourselfes haha :D
I agree. One of the best games of all time. Easy to teach to new players, get a group together and have a massive game day, teams, tournaments, customs, classics... one of the best!
That terrain was Minescape before Minescape was .... around. Man I had friends hip deep in Heroscape while I was too busy adulting. Glad I got over that.
Alright, so I finally gave in and purchased Rise of the Valkyrie, Fortress of the Archkyrie, and Road to the Forgotten Forest. Seems like a good start, but if you were to suggest some good bang for your buck additions what would you recommend?
Volcarren Wasteland is a fantastic expansion. Lava tiles add a lot of fun and strategy to maps. plus you get a magma people squad in it too. Also. you should track down one of the large figure expansion. Orm's return is my favorite. you get two dragons(one is a Marro), a evil wolf type creature, a killer robot and my favorite, Brunak; A lion centaur guy who can walk through lava
@@coryholmes5937 No way, Raknar's Vision over Orm's Return any day. Better selection of dragons and robots along with a giant and the fastest figure in the game. But better yet will be to buy the new upcoming Heroscape: Age of Annihilation master set when it drops, which will probably be much cheaper.
You could but ... slow. 3D printing is for prototyping, not production. Print a master, then mold off of it. You can make terrain for yourself and your friends, but Hasbro is legalistic about their patented design. I have an approach using puzzlecut wood cranked out on a lasercutter ....
I finally purchased heroscape in its entirety myself. Been looking really ,really hard for the microcorp troopers c3v from heroscapers. Can't find it anywhere.
I know this beats the purpose of it but i wish they had a video game of HeroScape so it be easy to collect everything and play with others, heck they can even sell brand new expansions as DLC and I would buy
Well, that kinda does exist. You can play with as much of the classic collection as you want on Tabletop Simulator. Definitely the cheapest way to play with the old Heroscape. But on the other hand, I'm kinda hoping that Tabletop Simulator won't be a viable option for all of the new upcoming Heroscape content that's apparently currently in production until long after the game is dead again.
Hello there Tom and the Dice Tower Crew :D I have been looking on the web and on your reviews for a game with simple dice combat system for 2(can be more but must be playable with only 2) players. Was wondering if you had something up your sleeve that I should take a look at or try out. Few points that I am thinking about: Dice Combat Simple but little Role playing Medieval theme prefered but modern or space themes are okay. Hit point system, (I love using dice or similar to track hit points of characters) Does not need to be a miniature game. Would Prefer a little longer game, 1 hour to 90 min is optimal but can be longer. For example I like the concept of King of Tokyo(New York) but it lacks length and would prefer more than one character per player.
Long story short passed up RotV and Swarm of the Marrow years at toys r us. Just purchased both for 150 bucks. Hope I didn't get ripped off. Will these 2 be enough for a good 3 player game? Anything else in particular I should keep my eyes open for?
Even one of these starter sets is enough for a great 3 player game. With both you could make an incredible battlefield for four people and will have more than enough miniatures for a new army every single game.
You should keep your eyes open for Heroscape: Age of Annihilation, a new master set that Hasbro is creating to revitalize this game! Will almost certainly be cheaper than any of the old sets floating around on ebay.
As others have mentioned, Heroscape is coming back! See the crowdfunding campaign here: hasbropulse.com/collections/haslab/products/heroscape-age-of-annihilation-vanguard-edition
I did the same thing back in the day. Took me over a year to get 75% of my collection back. I'm glad I did as it seems the game is actually growing these days. We now have local tournaments with 20+ players coming out. Long live HEROSCAPE!
